Red Sox Statement on Dustin Pedroia

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Boston Red Sox issued the following statement regarding second baseman Dustin Pedroia:

“Red Sox Medical Director Dr. Tom Gill examined Dustin Pedroia this evening in Fort Myers, Fla. Pedroia was diagnosed with a minor strain in his lower left abdominal region. While he will be held out from activity for a couple of days, it is not expected that he will miss significant time. Pedroia will rejoin Red Sox spring training camp on Sunday and is no longer participating in the World Baseball Classic.”

This is good news folks as the Red Sox really can’t afford to have Pedroia out of the lineup at the beginning of the season.

Evening Red Sox Delight – 3/14

My apologies for not getting something posted about the Boston Red Sox this morning. Sometimes real life takes over and there’s nothing you can do about it. I had wanted to recap the events of last night so I will take care of that and also recap today’s events plus the game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Our rivals to the south, the New York Yankees were in town last night to take on the Red Sox at City of Palms Park. The Red Sox ended up winning 8-4 on the strength of a 7-run 2nd inning off of Yankees starter Chien-Mien Wang. But that’s not the big story to come out of last night’s game.

The big story is that at least for now, the battle at shortstop appears to be over. Julio Lugo took the field for the Sox in the top half of the 1st inning but left the game before even taking an at-bat with a sore knee. He was sent for an MRI and today the report is that he may have a torn meniscus. And now Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe is reporting that Lugo will head back to Boston tomorrow and could have arthroscopic surgery as early as Tuesday. A knee scope will most likely sideline Lugo 4-6 weeks, meaning that Jed Lowrie will most likely be the opening day shortstop.

Last night brought the first game in the field for Mike Lowell and he said it went well. He even had a good night at the plate (2-for-2), hitting the first pitch he saw from Wang for a home run. David Ortiz made his return to the Red Sox a good one as he also blasted a 2-run homer off of Wang. Ivan Ochoa, who filled in for Lugo, also had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Tim Wakefield started last night and caught his first game with George Kottaras behind the dish. Wake went 2 1/3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. The big thing though is that Wake said he felt comfortable with Kottaras behind the plate. This could mean that the battle for the backup catchers spot is still open.

Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect inning and Takashi Saito gave up a hit while striking out 2 in his inning of work. Daniel Bard continues to impress Terry Francona and the Red Sox as he was lighting up the radar gun again last night in a perfect inning of work with a strikeout. Junichi Tazawa went 2 innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out 2.

Today, the Red Sox headed across the state to take on the Orioles in Ft. Lauderdale and came away with a 9-8 loss. Adam Mills took the start for Jon Lester who stayed behind in Ft. Myers to pitch in an intrasquad game and then take his physical for his new contract to be announced tomorrow. Mills worked 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. Every Red Sox pitcher who worked today gave up at least 1 run.

Rocco Baldelli had a good afternoon at the plate going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Josh Bard and Josh Reddick also both had 2 hits and an RBI while Angel Chavez added 2 hits as well. Lowrie ended up going 1-for-2 with an RBI and was walked twice.

The other big news that came out today was the strained oblique muscle suffered by Dustin Pedroia during a workout at the WBC yesterday. He’s on his way back to Ft. Myers to be examined by the Red Sox team doctors and was replaced by Brian Roberts of the Orioles.

Breaking News: Pedroia Injured During WBC Workout

Boston Red Sox Breaking News

According to Tom Verducci of SI.com, Boston Red Sox and Team USA second baseman Dustin Pedroia suffered a strained muscle near his rib cage during a workout on Friday. Pedroia has left Team USA and returned to Ft. Myers to have it examined.

It doesn’t sound as though it’s something too serious but this is why a lot of teams don’t want their players playing in the WBC.

Update: Dustin Pedroia filed a blog entry for WEEI.com explaining what happened.

While taking batting practice Friday I felt some soreness in my left oblique, but nothing to make me think that my availability for Saturday’s game against Puerto Rico would be in jeopardy. Then, after taking some swings off a tee, I was doing flips with Reggie Smith tossing the ball to me, and all of a sudden I felt a kind of shooting pain. I hadn’t felt anything like this before. Last year I had a sore right oblique during the American League Championship Series, but it was nothing like this.

Shane Victorino was standing next to me and after he saw me grimace he suggested I stop, reminding me about the priority (which is the coming season). The next thing I know I’m standing in front of a bunch of media in street clothes explaining what happened, and then trying to find my ride back to Fort Myers.

Pedroia has been removed from the Team USA roster and been replaced by Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles.

Powe’s Career Night Leads Celtics Past Grizzlies

Boston Celtics: Leon Powe scored a career-high 30 points and added 11 rebounds to help the Boston Celtics end a two-game losing streak at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies 102-92. The Celtics, who were without Kevin Garnett and Glen “Big Baby” Davis, also got 22 points from former UConn Husky Ray Allen and 17 points from Paul Pierce. Rajon Rondo returned to the lineup and had 4 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Another former UConn Husky, Rudy Gay, led the Grizzlies with 26 points and O.J. Mayo added 21. The Celtics now head to the midwest for a two game road trip that takes them to Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon and Chicago on Tuesday night. [ESPN.com]

Lester’s Deal To Be Official On Sunday

Tonight the Boston Red Sox made as statement that they will have an announcement on Jon Lester on Sunday morning. Lester was scheduled to start for the Red Sox in Ft. Lauderdale against the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow but will stay behind and pitch in an intrasquad game.

It’s not too hard to put together what’s happening here.

Lester will be staying behind to take his physical for the $5 year, $30 million dollar contract extension and then the announcement will come on Sunday.

Pretty simple stuff folks.

Maya Moore Named ESPN.com Player of the Year

Tina Charles, left, Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore can afford to celebrate with UConn comfortably ahead in the final minute - John Woike/Hartford Courant

The various news organizations and media outlets are starting to put out their Player of the Year and All-American Teams and this time it’s ESPN.com with their Women’s All-American Team and Player of the Year.

I’m pretty sure this won’t come as a surprise to people around these parts but ESPN.com has unanimously selected UConn Huskies sophomore forward Maya Moore as the ESPN.com Women’s Player of the Year.

Her teammate Renee Montgomery joins her on the First Team and Tina Charles was named a Second Team All-American.

“Moore’s sophomore season proved her ability to elevate an already pretty airtight game,” ESPN.com columnist Mechelle Voepel writes. “This year, her defense has become even more energized and dynamic, her ability to run the court is sharper, and her leadership skills — which complement, not compete with, senior Renee Montgomery — more valuable.”

“The Huskies shook off the decision of prized recruit Elena Delle Donne not to come to UConn. They dealt with the loss of another freshman, Caroline Doty, to a knee injury. They seamlessly replaced the important, if understated, contributions of last season’s senior class,” Voepel adds. “And they have answered any and all challenges thus far. Maya Moore’s leadership and steady personality are essential to UConn handling all of that.”

ESPN.COM’S ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM

  • DeWanna Bonner*, Auburn, 6-4, senior, guard
  • Angel McCoughtry*, Louisville, 6-1, senior, forward
  • Renee Montgomery*, Connecticut, 5-7, senior, guard
  • Maya Moore, Connecticut*, 6-0, sophomore, forward
  • Courtney Paris, Oklahoma, 6-4, senior, center

ESPN.COM’S ALL-AMERICA SECOND TEAM

  • Jayne Appel, Stanford, 6-4, jr., F/C
  • Tina Charles, Connecticut, 6-4, jr., C
  • Marissa Coleman, Maryland, 6-1, sr., G/F
  • Epiphanny Prince, Rutgers, 5-9, jr., G
  • Kristi Toliver, Maryland, 5-7, sr., G

This is just the start of what should be numerous accolades for the UConn women’s trio.
