Beckett Buzzes The Abreu Tower

During the 1st inning of yesterday’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox, Josh Beckett buzzed the head of Bobby Abreu after time was called.

Beckett had been holding Chone Figgins on 1st base for a long period of time, probably expecting time to be called. When it wasn’t, Beckett threw the pitch but at the last possible second, time was called and rather than get hurt, Beckett let the pitch go past Abreu’s head.

[flash http://ianbethune.com/beckettbuzz.flv w=425 h=344]

Ironically enough, Beckett wasn’t ejected while four members of the Angels were ejected including manager Mike Scioscia, hitting coach Mickey Hatcher, center fielder Torii Hunter and reliever Justin Speier.

Personally, I don’t think Beckett was trying to hit Abreu. He was just trying to avoid injury by letting the pitch go. While most pitchers might not throw at someone’s head, it definitely didn’t look like he did it on purpose.

The Angels did get their revenge though as they were able to get the win.

Angels Take Rubber Game 5-4

The Angels defeated the Red Sox 5-4. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)The game wasn’t without fireworks though as Josh Beckett and Bobby Abreu got into a little dust up in the 1st inning.

After Angels starter Dustin Moseley set the Red Sox quietly in the top half of the 1st, Chone Figgins led off with a single off of Beckett. With Howie Kendrick at the plate, Figgins stole second before flying out to left. Beckett was taking a lot of time going to the plate with Figgins at second. Just as Beckett was going to throw the pitch, Abreu and the home plate umpire called time.

Beckett let the throw go and it almost hit Abreu in the head and he took exception to that. Abreu started jawing with Beckett and then the benches emptied. After things settled down, more words were exchanged and the benches emptied once again. Once everything was all said and done, Beckett and Abreu stayed in the game while Angels skipper Mike Scioscia, bench coach Mickey Hatcher, reliever Justin Speier and Torii Hunter were ejected (video to follow later).

REUTERS/Danny MoloshokBeckett wasn’t as dominant as he was in first start this season. He went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 to fall to 1-1 on the young season. Manny Delcarmen went 2/3 of an inning giving up a hit and a strikeout. Javier Lopez finished off the inning for Declarmen and Okajima went an inning allowing the big blow by Vlad while striking out 1.

Moseley went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Brian Fuentes finished it off the Angels giving up a run on 2 hits for his second save of the season.

Kevin Youkilis had another multiple hit gamewith 2 that included a solo home run. David Ortiz had 2 hits and an RBI while Nick Green had 2 hits in his first start of the season. Jason Bay homered for the second consecutive day as well.

Youk got things going for the Red Sox when he led off with a solo home run off of Moseley. Bay followed that with a solo home run of his own and just like that the Red Sox were up 2-0.

Juan Rivera led off the 3rd with a strikeout and then Macier Izturis singled. Beckett then walked Figgins and Kendrick brought in Izturis with a single with both runners advancing up 90 feet on the throw home. Abreu got his revenge as he hit a 2-run single to put the Halos up 3-2. Beckett got out of any further damage by getting Vlad and Gary Matthews, Jr. to ground out.

Izturis led off the 5th with a single and went to second on a balk by Beckett. Figgins struck out but Kendrick brought him home with a single. Kendrick was thrown out at second trying to advance to second on the throw.

Pedroia led off the 6th with a single. After a Big Papi strikeout, Youk reached on a throwing error by Izturis with Pedroia stopping at second.  After a Drew flyout and with Bay at the plate, the Red Sox executed a double steal and Pedroia ended up scoring when Mike Napoli’s throw went into the outfield. Bay ended up being intentionally walked and that ended Moseley’s day. Jose Arrendondo came in and struck out Mike Lowell.

(AP Photo/Lori Shepler)The Red Sox blew a chance to get some runs in the 8th inning.

Scot Shields walked Big Papi and Youk to start the inning. After a Drew fly out, Bay worked a walk to load up the bases for Lowell. Shields got out of trouble though as he got Lowell to foul out to third and Varitek to fly out to center.

Vlad’s big blow came when he led off the 8th with the solo home run by Okajima.

Fuentes came in for the 9th and hit Green with a pitch to start the inning. Rocco Baldelii pinch-hit for Jacoby Ellsbury and  struck out. Pedroia couldn’t get it done as he popped out to second. With Big Papi at the plate, Green went to second on defensive indifference and came around to score on a Big Papi single. Youk followed with a single but Drew did his Statue of Liberty impersonation as he was watched strike 3.

The Red Sox head a little bit north as they will take on the Oakland A’s in a 3-game set that starts tomorrow at 10:05 PM.  Jon Lester gets the start for the Red Sox and will be opposed by Dallas Braden.

LeBron, Cavs Spanks Celtics

Boston Celtics: In a game that the Boston Celtics would rather just forget, the Cleveland Cavaliers jumped out to a 31-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and went on to beat the Celtics 107-79 in Cleveland. The loss doesn’t hurt the Celtics as they clinched the  #2 seed in the Eastern Conference when the Orlando Magic lost last night. Paul Pierce led the Green with 14 points while Glen “Big Baby” Davis added 12. Mikki Moore came off the bench to score 10 points.  LeBron James led the Cavaliers with 29 points with Daniel Gibson coming off the bench to add 15. The Celtics head to Philadelphia on Tuesday night before returning to Boston on Wednesday night to close out the season with the Washington Wizards. [ESPN.com]

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – Easter Edition

BOSTON - APRIL 7: Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett #19 throws against the Tampa Bay Rays during an opening day game at Fenway Park April 7, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

Before the Boston Red Sox head to Oakland to take on the A’s in a 3-game set, they still have one game left with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

It’s been an emotional weekend in Anaheim for both teams but more so the Angels. They have been nothing but professional in dealing with the tragic events of Thursday morning and once again I offer my condolences to the Adenhart, Stewart and Pearson families, friends of the trio as well as the Angels organization. I’d also like to take a moment and send well wishes to Jon Wilhite and hope that he continues on the path to recovery.

In the finale, Terry Francona hands the pelota to one of his aces in Josh Beckett. He has faced the Angels 6 times in his career and is 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA. Beckett is 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 2 regular season starts at Angel Stadium.

Dustin Moseley gets the nod this afternoon for the Angels. He has made 2 appearances (1 start)  against the Red Sox in his young career and has no record with an 8.10 ERA.

Despite the economic woes plaguing the state of Connecticut and the city of Hartford, Connecticut governor Jodi M. Rell has announced plans for a parade saluting the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team that won the national championship this past week in St. Louis.

“The UConn women’s basketball team has a long tradition of success when it comes to the Big East and the NCAA National Championships,” Rell said. “Husky fans rightly want to continue the state’s wonderful tradition of giving these young women and their coaches the recognition and admiration they truly deserve.

“A parade in downtown Hartford is just one way to do just that – not only for the players, the coaches and the university, but for the thousands of fans of all ages who helped cheer them on to a perfect 39-0 season and a sixth NCAA Championship,” Rell said.

The parade will take next place next Sunday, April 19th in Hartford. It will start at the state Capitol with a rally to follow on the steps of the Capitol building.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/12

ANAHEIM, CA - APRIL 11: A banner memorializing pitcher Nick Adenhart of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is lit by a strip of late afternoon sunlight after the game with the Boston Red Sox on April 11, 2009 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

While it’s been an emotional time this weekend for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and to a lesser degree, the Boston Red Sox, the game of baseball has gone on.

Yesterday the Red Sox finally showed some signs of life at the plate as Jason Bay smacked two home runs and Mike Lowell added one as well. They also got a decent outing from Brad Penny who was making his debut in a Red Sox uniform.

Speaking of debuts, the Red Sox also wore their new gray road uniforms for the first time. Personally, I liked them. They had that old time feel to them.

Jed Lowrie’s struggles continue at the plate as he now 1-for-18 (.056). The tribulations at the plate aren’t effecting his game on the field though. Lowrie did hit .343 during spring training but as we all know, spring training numbers don’t mean squat. By the way, does anyone remember a certain Red Sox second baseman who had a rough April before going on to win the AL Rookie of the Year in 2007 and the AL MVP in 2008?

“It almost never fails, but the guy that’s swinging the bat the best in spring training [struggles early in the season],” Francona said. “He hit that last ball [Friday night] real good, which is good to see. He’s actually had pretty good at-bats. He’s gotten in deep counts.”

Bay’s Two Home Runs Help Red Sox Past Angels

It almost didn’t look like the Boston Red Sox were going to pick up the win today as Jonathan Papelbon made it interesting in the 9th. But he held on and made Jason Bay’s two home runs stand up as the Red Sox went on to a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in front of 40,163 sun-soaked fans at Angel Stadium.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)The win for the Red Sox (2-3) ends a 9-game regular season losing streak against the Angels.

After retiring the only batter he faced in the 8th inning, Papelbon got himself into a wee bit of trouble in the 9th inning.

Torii Hunter led off the inning with a home run to cut the lead to 5-4. Kendry Morales followed with a double on an 0-2 count and was replaced by a pinch-runner in Reggie Willits. Papelbon got the first out of the inning when Juan Rivera grounded to short as Willits stayed at second. Papelbon then walked Napoli, who had 2 solo home runs and a double on the afternoon. Erick Aybar struck out for the second out and then Chone Figgins walked to load the bases up.

Papelbon got ahead of Howie Kendrick 0-2 and then Kendrick fouled off 7 straight pitches before finally flying out to right field to end the game. It took Papelbon 39 pitches, 37 of them in the 9th to get the job done.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brad Penny reacts as he leaves the field during the game against the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth inning of a baseball game in Anaheim, Calif., Saturday, April 11, 2009. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)Brad Penny made his Red Sox debut this afternoon and picked up the win despite allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. He also had 2 strikeouts. Ramon Ramirez continued his good start to the season as he allowed just a hit and had a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

Joe Saunders started for the Angels (2-3) and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings of work. He also struck out 2.

Bay was the man for the Red Sox today going 2-for-3 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Rocco Baldelli and Jason Varitek both added 2 hits for the visiting nine and Mike Lowell knocked in the other 2 runs with a 2-run homer.

The Angels got on the board first in the 1st inning.

Figgins worked a leadoff walk and stole second with Kendrick at the plate. Kendrick moved Figgins over to third with a ground out to the right side and he came around to score on a Bobby Abreu ground out to the right side.

Napoli pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning when he led off with a home run.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)After a Baldelli fly out, Saunders walked Bay in the top of the 5th. The walk proved to be costly as Lowell connected on a two-run home run to left to tie the game at 2.

The lead didn’t last long though for the Red Sox as Napoli led off the home half of the 5th with another solo home run, his second of the afternoon.

The Red Sox went ahead for good in the 7th inning.

Baldelli reached on an infield single to start the inning. He wasn’t on the bases too long as Bay brought him with a 2-run home run to give the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.

Bay gave the Red Sox an insurance run when he hit a solo home run with 1 out in the 9th off of Justin Speier.

The two teams will wrap up their 3-game set tomorrow afternoon at 3:35 PM. Commander Kickass Josh Beckett will get the start for the Red Sox and be opposed by Dustin Moseley.
