Red Sox Complete Sweep Of Tigers With 6-3 Win

The Boston Red Sox were able to take advantage of the wildness of Dontrelle Willis as they went on to a 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers to complete a 3-game sweep in front of 31,353 at Comerica Park in Detroit.

It’s the fourth straight win for the Red Sox (32-22) and they stay tied for first in the AL East with the New York Yankees, who beat the Texas Rangers this afternoon. The Tigers drop to 28-24 but still remain on top of the AL Central.

Boston Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield, right, smiles at a comment from manager Terry Francona while being relieved in the seventh inning of a baseball game Thursday, June 4, 2009, in Detroit. Wakefield (7-3) has defeated the Tigers 16 times, more than any other active pitcher. The Red Sox won 6-3. (AP Photo/Duane Burleson)Tim Wakefield started this one for the Red Sox and other than a rough time in the 2nd inning, pitched well enough to pick up his 7th win. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and recorded 3 strikeouts. He didn’t walk anyone.

The Red Sox bullpen was solid as it has been all season long. Justin Masterson struck out the only two batters he faced while Hideki Okajima gave up a hit and struck out 1 in 2/3 of an inning. Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 14th save despite allowing a hit and a walk.

Willis looked good in the first two innings but became wild in the 3rd. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 5 walks while striking out 3. And yes, he didn’t allow a hit.

Zach Miner took over for Willis and went 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 before leaving with an injury. Ryan Perry worked 2/3 of an inning while Joel Zumaya, he of the 101 MPH fastball this afternoon, gave up 2 hits and a walk while striking out 1. Tigers closer Fernando Rodney worked the 9th, giving up a walk and striking out 1.

The Red Sox had just 6 hits in the game with Mike Lowell having 2 of them and adding an RBI as well. Jason Bay’s one hit was a 2-run double while Rocco Baldelli’s hit was good for an RBI single. Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury had the other hits for the Red Sox. J.D. Drew reached base four times via the walk and picked up an RBI. Kevin Youkilis also had an RBI before leaving the game for precautionary reasons with a tight right calf.

Wakefield had set the side down in order in the 1st inning but the Tigers came through with 3 runs in the 2nd.

Early Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/4

The Boston Red Sox look to end their 10-game road trip this afternoon with a sweep of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit.

The game this afternoon will start at 1:05 PM EDT and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Tigers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Detroit. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Tim Wakefield looks to put together a good outing for Terry Francona this afternoon to help the Red Sox to a sweep. On the season, Wake is 6-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 10 starts. He was 2-0 with 0.69 ERA in two starts in 2008 against the Tigers and is 15-10 with a 4.20 ERA in 34 games (22 starts) in his career. In 15 games (10 starts) in Detroit, Wake is 5-5 with 5.52 ERA.

Dontrelle Willis makes just his 5th start in 2009 and he is 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA. He has faced the Red Sox once in his career and that start came as a member of the Florida Marlins. In that game back on June 30 2006 in Miami, he went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits to pick up the win.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 6/4

Last night in Detroit, the Boston Red Sox got a dominating effort from Josh Beckett as he held the Detroit Tigers hitless for 6 2/3 innings in a 10-5 win.

Beckett’s stuff last night was downright nasty. He had great velocity and command of all of his pitches. It was quite surprising to see him come back out after a 23 minute wait that saw the Red Sox put up 6 runs. Although I highly suspect it was to give him a chance to plunk Gerald Laird who had tried to break up the no-no with a bunt in the 6th inning, which is a no-no in the unwritten rules of baseball.

While David Ortiz only had one hit last night, he swung the bat well. Of course that one hit was 2-run double in the 6-run 8th inning. One of his outs went 420 feet to dead center in Comerica Park, a ball which would have been out of every other ballpark. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come from Big Papi.

There were also some milestone moments for a few of the Red Sox players last night.

J.D. Drew’s home run in the 1st inning was the 200th of his career while Mike Lowell’s single in the 6th was the 1500th hit of his career. Rocco Baldelli also added the 500th hit of his career.

The Red Sox will go for the sweep this afternoon at 1:05 PM with Tim Wakefield taking on Dontrelle Willis.
