Red Sox Sign 3rd Round Pick David Renfroe

David Renfroe - AP Photo/Rogelio V. SolisAccording to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, the Boston Red Sox have signed their third round pick in this year’s draft, David Renfroe with a $1.4 million signing bonus that will be paid over 5 years.

According to Baseball America, which first reported the agreement, the net present value of the deal is less than the $1,134,000 bonus given to the Sox’ first-round pick, Reymond Fuentes. Also according to BA, Renfroe’s bonus is the second-highest given to a third-rounder this year, trailing only the $2 million agreed upon by Will Myers and the Royals. Renfroe had committed to play quarterback at the University of Mississippi after staring in both baseball and football at South Panola (Miss.) High. Although he reportedly has a fastball that reaches 95 mph, Renfroe projects to be a positional player in the Sox’ organization.

Renfroe was supposed to attend the University of Mississippi as a two-sport athlete in football and baseball.

After taking 3-of-4 from the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox head to Texas for a key 3-game matchup with the Texas Rangers. The Red Sox currently hold a 1/2 lead over the Texas Rangers in the race for the wild card.

The game tonight will start at 8:05 PM EDT and will be televised in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Rangers television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports Southwest. And if the television isn’t your cup of tea, you can catch the game on one of the many affiliates of the Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester makes the start for the Red Sox tonight and holds the only win against the Rangers this season for the Red Sox. In that start back on June 6, he allowed one run in a complete game effort. He’s faced the Rangers four times in his career and is 2-0 with a 3.33 ERA. He’s never faced the Rangers in Texas. Lester is 9-7 with a 3.67 ERA in 23 starts on the season.

Kevin Millwood looks to continue his recent success against the Red Sox as he is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA against them in two starts. Overall in fourteen starts, Millwood is 6-4 with a 3.99 ERA. He’s made 22 starts on the season and is 9-7 with a 3.38 ERA.

Red Sox Sign 7th Round Pick Younginer

Madison YounginerWith the deadline to sign players from the 2009 MLB Draft coming up on August 17th, the Boston Red Sox have come to terms with their 7th round pick, Madison Younginer.

According to Jason Churchill of ESPN.com, Younginer will receive a signing bonus of $975,000.

Younginer, a 6-foot-3, 195-pounder, was a tough scout for clubs this past spring because of his role on his high school team. He was used as a reliever primarily, limiting his chances to prove he could hold his velocity and delivery together as a starting pitcher.

Many talent evaluators raved about Younginer’s arm, and some even considered him a first-round talent based on his 92-96 mph fastball.

Younginer, who is from Mauldin High School in South Carolina, was supposed to attend Clemson University and had planned to go to freshman orientation there today. Obviously, he won’t be doing that now that he has signed the deal.

Red Sox Hope Gonzalez Is Answer At Shortstop

Ever since Boston Red Sox GM Theo Epstein traded away Nomar Garciaparra in 2004, they have had a revolving door at shortstop. In 2006, Alex Gonzalez played shortstop for the Red Sox and committed just seven errors in 111 games.

Alex Gonzalez - AP PhotoFast forward to 2009 as the Red Sox acquired Gonzalez from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a player to be named later and/or cash considerations. The Red Sox will be responsible for the remaining part of the $5.375 million owed to him. Gonzalez’ contract has a team option for $6 million in 2010 with a $500,000 buyout.

Gonzalez hit .255 with 9 home runs and 50 RBIs for the Red Sox in 2006. In 68 games with the Reds this season, Gonzalez is hitting just .210 with 3 home runs and 26 RBIs. We all know the Red Sox didn’t acquire him for his bat though. He’s made 6 errors for the Reds this season.

According to Boston.com, Gonzalez will join the team in Texas tomorrow and speculation is that newly acquired Chris Woodward will be released.

The Red Sox had hoped Jed Lowrie would be the answer to their woes at shortstop but he went back on the DL with numbness in his forearm shortly after his return from the disabled list after undergoing surgery on wrist. Nick Green has struggled recently at the plate as well and his fielding isn’t exactly the best to be an every day player.

Gonzalez should provide stability on the defensive side as the Red Sox head down the stretch run here in the 2009 season.

Update: According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, the Red Sox have sent minor league shortstop Kris Negron to the Reds in exchange for Gonzalez. Negron was playing for the Single-A Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. The Red Sox will also get $1.1 million in cash from the Reds as well.

Vick Shows Remorse In Philly Arrival

081409_PHILADELPHIA_PA_New Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick looks towards Eagles Coach Andy Reid during a press conference at the NovaCare complex in South Philadelphia on Friday, August 14, 2009. Today the Philadelphia Eagles introduce controversial quarter back Michael Vick to the media. ALEJANDRO A. ALVAREZ / PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS

With the return of Michael Vick to the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles I want to weigh in on this.

I’m really proud of Vick in how he handled himself this morning at the press conference. He was truly contrite and remorseful and it showed. It will be far from easy for him as he returns to the league.

Public opinion in Philly is mixed and it surely won’t be easy on the road but Vick has some tremendous support.

Tony Dungy would not be involved if he didn’t believe in Michael Vick. Dungy is an incredible person and without him this may not have happened this quickly.

People make poor decisions, I know I have, and need to show they deserve a second chance. I believe Michael Vick has done that and has earned this opportunity and I hope people everywhere see the rehabilitated man and not the awful deeds in his past.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 8/14

BOSTON - AUGUST 13: Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz #61 of the Boston Red Sox reacts to the out during the game against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park on August 13, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

Clay Buchholz ended up on the wrong side of a pitcher’s duel yesterday afternoon for the Boston Red Sox as Justin Verlander was throwing gas the entire game in the 2-0 win for the Detroit Tigers.

For Buchholz it was his best appearance in a Red Sox uniform this season and came down to one bad pitch. A pitch he left out over the plate to Ryan Raburn, who planted it into the Green Monster seats. Other than that pitch, Buchholz was outstanding. He had good command and location on all of his pitches.

It was the second straight outing for Buchholz where he didn’t receive any run support. We can only hope that doesn’t weigh on his mind in his next outing. He’s definitely showing the signs of why the Red Sox promoted him from Triple-A and will definitely be counted on down the stretch here in this pennant race the Red Sox are involved in.

One of those teams the Red Sox are in the pennant race with just happens to be their next opponent, the Texas Rangers.

Right now the Rangers sit just a ½ behind them in the wild card standings. Every game in this series is important because a loss or a win means a full one game swing in the standings. Ideally we all hope the Red Sox will sweep the Rangers but I’ll settle for taking two out of the three games.

The Rangers have taken 5-of-6 from the Red Sox this season already and would hold the tie-breaker advantage no matter what happens in this series. This is why these games are so important.

It won’t be easy though as tonight’s starter for the Rangers, Kevin Millwood, is 2-0 against them. The Red Sox counter with Jon Lester who has the only win of the season against the Rangers.

It should be a great weekend of baseball deep down in the heart of Texas.

SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. – University of Connecticut junior linebacker Scott Lutrus (Brookfield, Conn.) was named to the Preseason Watch List for the 2009 Chuck Bednarik Award – given to the top defensive player in the nation by the Maxwell Football Club of Roslyn, Pa.
