Former UConn QB Lorenzen Cut By Jaguars

Unfortunately for him, his NFL dream came to an end for now as the Jaguars cut him as they got their roster down to the NFL mandatory limit of 75 on Tuesday afternoon.

Lorenzen was signed by the Jaguars as a non-drafted free agent after the 2009 NFL Draft. His Huskies teammate Julius Williams survived the first cut with the Jaguars.

Lorenzen played in three preseason games and had one catch for twenty yards and a touchdown.

He becomes the second Husky to be cut during the first round of cuts during the NFL preaseason. Alfred Fincher was cut by the Redskins over the weekend.

Papelbon Closes Door On Rays

Jonathan Papelbon came into a bases loaded no out situation in the 8th inning and got the job done as the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4 in front of 17,692 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL on Tuesday night.

After a Kevin Youkilis solo home run in the 8th gave the Red Sox a 7-2 lead, Hideki Okajima came in and didn’t retire a batter as all five batters he faced reached base with two of them scoring. Papelbon came in and got B.J. Upton to strike out for the first out.

Jason Bartlett followed with a liner to center that Jacoby Ellsbury made a sliding catch on. Pat Burrell got caught up in no man’s land as he wasn’t sure if Ellsbury made the catch and didn’t tag up.  Papelbon got Carl Crawford to foul out to Jason Bay in left to end the threat in the 8th.

After the Red Sox added a run when Alex Gonzalez singled and Ellsbury brought him in with a triple to make it 8-4, Papelbon got Ben Zobrist to line out and then struck out Evan Longoria and Carlos Peña to pick up 33rd save of the season.

The win for the Red Sox keeps them 6.5 games behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East.  The Texas Rangers actually picked up a half game on the Red Sox in the wild card standings as they swept a doubleheader from the Toronto Blue Jays and are now 3.5 games back. The Rays fall to six games behind the Red Sox as well.

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)Jon Lester started this one for the Red Sox and had a great night on the mound. He had all of his pitches working for and had good command and location. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine on 97 pitches in six innings of work. The nine strikeouts gives him 196 on the season and that is a new Red Sox record for left-handers. Bruce Hurst had 190 back in 1987.

Billy Wagner was perfect in his second outing and had two strikeouts.  Okajima didn’t retire a batter and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk. Papelbon struck out three in two innings.

Andy Sonnanstine returned from Triple-A Durham and struggled.  He allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts in four innings of work.

Joe Maddon then employed seven relievers to finish off the game for the Rays.

Ellsbury and Youkilis both had two hits and two RBI to lead the Red Sox. Mike Lowell added two hits and an RBI while Victor Martinez added two hits. J.D. Drew hit a 2-run homer and Jason Bay added a solo home run, his 30th of the season.

Josh Beckett looks to get back on track tommorow night as he’ll square off with Red Sox killer Matt Garza.

Red Sox Nominate Youkilis For Clemente Award

Roberto Clemente Award

BOSTON RED SOX NOMINATE KEVIN YOUKILIS FOR THE
2009 ROBERTO CLEMENTE AWARD PRESENTED BY CHEVY

Fans Have Opportunity to Vote Online for the National Winner of Prestigious Award

Kevin Youkilis today was named the Boston Red Sox’ nominee for the 2009 Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. He is one of 30 Major League Club nominees for the national 2009 Roberto Clemente Award, which is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who combines exceptional performance on the baseball field with devoted work in the community.

Tomorrow will mark the eighth annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor the legacy of Roberto Clemente. Fans are encouraged to participate in the selection of the national winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy. From September 2 through October 4, 2009, fans can log on to www.chevy.com/clemente and vote for one of the 30 Club nominees.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevy, is part of Chevy’s official sponsorship of Major League Baseball, and recognizes those players who best represent the game of baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contributions to their teams. The award is named for Clemente, a 12-time All-Star and Hall of Famer who died on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. This award perpetuates Clemente’s legacy and character by recognizing current-day players who truly understand the value of helping others. Over the past two years, Kevin Youkilis and his charity, Hits for Kids, have impacted the lives of over 1,000 children and raised nearly $2 million through charitable events and programs. Kevin has partnered with organizations on issues that are close to his heart such as premature child-birth, early childhood literacy and teen suicide prevention.

In the spring, Kevin and Hits for Kids partnered with the March of Dimes to raise over $20,000 to fund research to prevent premature childbirth. He joined with Raising a Reader Massachusetts to raise over $125,000 to help provide low income families with the tools and resources they need to encourage literacy from an early age. Kevin also teamed up this year with the Riverside Trauma Center to raise money and awareness about teen suicide prevention with their “Striking Out Teenage Suicide” event. This event was created after a Boston suburb lost five high school students to suicide in five years. In an effort to make a difference, Kevin spoke to an audience of family and friends who had lost loved ones and shared his personal story of losing several friends to suicide.

Since 2006 Kevin has welcomed children to Fenway Park through his ticket program, “Youk’s Kids”. Kevin purchases 10 tickets to one game per month during the regular season and provides the tickets to children from area non-profit organizations. Not only do the kids get to enjoy a Red Sox game, but they also get to meet Kevin prior to batting practice and Kevin spends time with them posing for photos and signing autographs.

In the offseason, Youkilis continues to be an active leader in the community, hosting pizza dinners for children from local reading groups, trick or treating on Halloween at a local children’s hospital, spending every Christmas morning visiting patients at Boston Children’s Hospital, and participating in events to support the Red Sox Foundation, the team’s official charity.

“Being a pro athlete in Boston, kids automatically look up to you,” said Youkilis. “I try to tell them that you have to work to achieve your life’s goals and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. You can do anything you put your mind to.”

Kevin will be recognized as the Red Sox’ nominee for the 2009 Roberto Clemente Award during a ceremony before the game on Tuesday, September 8, 2009.

RemDawg To Do Only Home Red Sox Games For Rest of 2009

Jerry Remy Baseball cardAfter coming back at the beginning of the last homestand, NESN color analyst for Boston Red Sox games Jerry Remy said that he would probably do only the home games for the rest of the season.

On Tuesday afternoon via Twitter, he made that official.

For rest of season I’ll be doing home games only-means #RedSox don’t have Wally with them-so you should keep your Wally close to TV-Jerry

I don’t think anyone in Red Sox Nation has a problem with this at all as we all want the RemDawg to continue to get better from his recent health problems.

My best guess is that Dave Roberts and Dennis Eckersley will fill-in on the road for the rest of the 2009 season. Roberts is expected in the booth for Tuesday night’s game with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Red Sox Call Up Five Players

Boston Red SoxWith today being the first day of rosters expanding to 40, the Boston Red Sox have called up five players, including four players from the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox.

The four players from the PawSox are catcher George Kottaras, outfielders Brian Anderson and Joey Gathright and infielder Chris Woodward. They also recalled Junichi Tazawa from the Gulf Coast Red Sox.

Both Gathright and Woodward were added to the 40-man roster. To make room on the 40-man, the Red Sox designated Jeff Bailey for assignment.

Tazawa is expected to start this weekend against the Chicago White Sox.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 9/1

(AP Photo/Winslow Townson)

After enjoying an off day on Monday, the Boston Red Sox woke up this morning and found themselves with a 4-game lead over the Texas Rangers in the wild card standings. Their opponent for the next three games, the Tampa Bay Rays, are 5-games back. While I’m not saying the AL East championship is out of reach yet, the Red Sox do trail the New York Yankees by 6.5 games.

With Tampa Bay in their rearview mirror, the Red Sox have a great opportunity to dig a deeper hole in the Rays playoff chances. But it’s not going to be an easy task unlike in past years.

The Red Sox and Rays have met twelve times this year. The Rays hold an 8-4 advantage in those games. What makes it worse for the Red Sox is the fact that they have won just one of out of six games at Tropicana Field this year.

The two teams will meet again for three more games on September 11-13 but now is the chance to put some distance between them and their AL East rivals.

With rosters expanding today, expect the Red Sox to be adding some new and old faces to the team. It’s expected that Junichi Tazawa will rejoin the team from the GCL Red Sox since their season is now over. There’s also rumors that newly acquired Joey Gaithright and Brian Anderson will also get the call today.

Tazawa is expected to make a start this weekend against the White Sox, a team that hit him hard in his last start. But after last night’s trades of Jim Thome and Jose Contreras, it appears the White Sox have thrown in the towel on the 2009 season.

It should be a great three days of baseball at the Trop. Let’s just hope the Red Sox can take at least 2-of-3 from the Rays.

Penny Wants To Leave His Heart In San Francisco

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brad Penny reacts after a ground-rule double hit by New York Yankees' Eric Hinske in the second inning of their baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Friday, Aug. 21, 2009. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola)After Brad Penny asked for and received his release from the Boston Red Sox last Thursday, he had to clear release waivers. During that time, there was speculation that he could end up with Boston’s hated rivals to the south, the New York Yankees.

There were also thoughts he would return to the National League with the San Francisco Giants or one of his former clubs in the Florida Marlins. Any deal Penny was going to sign needed to be done by Monday night so that he could be post-season eligible.

Well according to Buster Olney of ESPN The Magazine, Penny has decided to head back to the NL West with the Giants as he agreed to a minor league deal with them on Monday. This will be the third team in the NL West he has played for. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks are the others.

Coming into Monday night’s games, the Giants were six games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and were tied with the Colorado Rockies for the wild card.

Penny’s first start should come on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Philles and then he is lined up to face the Dodgers.

Penny signed a 1-year, $5 million deal with the Red Sox before the season and made 24 starts for them. He was 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA and had won just once in his last eleven starts in a Red Sox uniform.
