RIP Jasper Howard 1989-2009

RIP Jasper Howard 1989-2009

UConn Huskies starting cornerback Jasper Howard has passed away at the age of 20 after being stabbed during an altercation after a homecoming dance on campus in Storrs, CT.

According to the Hartford Courant, Howard was leaving the dance when the altercation occurred and was one of two people stabbed. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to UConn’s website, the perpetrator is still at large. Police are actively investigating this incident and anyone with information is asked to contact the UConn Police at 860-486-4800.

Earlier on Saturday, Howard had played in UConn’s 38-25 win over the Louisville Cardinals. During the game, he had 11 tackles and forced a fumble that he recovered.

Howard, a junior, had made 23 tackles this season and 96 tackles, three career interceptions and two forced fumbles. He was also the top return man in the Big East.

He is survived by his mother and sisters. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, the entire UConn football program and his friends on this tragic loss.

Dixon Carries Huskies Past Cardinals

UConn tailback Andre Dixon (2) carries the ball through a hole as teammates block Louisville's Chris Campa (43) and Jon Dempsey (38) in the second half of the Huskies' 38-25 victory at Rentschler Field - Douglas Healey/AP

Andre Dixon had 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns as he led the UConn Huskies to a 38-25 win in Big East action on Saturday at Rentschler Field.

The Huskies improve to 4-2 (1-1 Big East) while the Cardinals fall to 2-4 (0-2).

UConn receiver Marcus Easley (29) breaks a tackle attempt by Louisville's Jon Dempsey (38) during the second half. Easley had six catches for 108 yards and a TD in the Huskies' 38-25 win at home - Douglas Healey/APWhile Dixon was the main story on the offensive side of the ball, the emergence of Marcus Easley at wide receiver could easily be as well. Easley has pretty much come out of no where on the UConn depth chart to take over the top spot at wide receiver. For the second straight week he caught a touchdown pass from Endres and also had a career-high six catches for a career-high 108 yards.

After a quick 3-and-out to start the game, Endres settled down and got the offense moving like a well oiled machine. You could see why UConn head coach Randy Edsall elevated him to the top spot at QB. He’s gotten better over the course of the season and with him at the helm the offense is clicking right now. He was 14-of-21 for 273 yards and had an interception to go along with the TD pass to Easley. He also hooked up with Kashif Moore for a 67 yard completion.

The Huskies racked up 481 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon with 208 of it coming on the ground. Jordan Todman had eight carries for 63 yards and a touchdown as well.

What’s a little disconcerting is the fact that UConn gave up 457 yards to Louisville’s offense. Cardinals QB Adam Froman had 295 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. Bilal Powell paced the Cardinals ground attack with 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Lawrence Wilson seemed to be everywhere on the field as he finished with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery.

But the main problem is the 457 yards allowed. The Huskies will need to tighten up the defense if they want to have any chance of beating West Virginia, a team who has beaten UConn badly the past two years.

Former UConn Husky and current Washington Wizards small forward Caron Butler has joined the ranks of athlete bloggers. He will be blogging throughout the season over at HoopsHype.com.

Here’s the opening paragraph of his first blog entry:

Since Gilbert Arenas no longer wants to blog, I guess it’s my turn now. You can read me here throughout the season with my thoughts on the Wizards, the NBA and more. So here were go. Hope you like it.

It should interesting to see what Butler has to say during the season. Plus I can’t wait to see what he has to say about any former UConn players they play during the season.

Cody, Cody. He’s Our Man!

UConn quarterback Cody Endres scrambles out of the pocket after Tracy Robertson, left, and Joe Pawelek of Baylor give pressure during the second quarter Saturday afternoon. Endres completed 12 of 23 passes for 147 yards in UConn's 30-22 victory - John Woike/Hartford Courant

Cody, Cody. If he can’t do it, no one can!

Now if UConn Huskies head football coach Randy Edsall had a really warped sense of humor, that’s how he would have announced that Cody Endres is now QB1. But instead he just made a simple statement at Tuesday’s weekly presser with the local media.

“Cody is our QB. He is the starter. I spoke to both Zach and Cody [on Monday]. It’s unfortunate Zach was No. 1 coming out of the spring and then in the fall and gets injured. Cody has played well, just look at the numbers, he has performed very, very well and better than Zach has. I told Zach his job is to be ready mentally and physically to go. He’s a play away. I still think he’s a bit rusty after watching him on Sunday.”

Zach Frazer had been QB1 until a knee injury forced him out of the loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels. Since Endres took over, the Huskies have gone 2-1 including a huge win on the road over Baylor. In four games (three starts), Endres is 55-of-83 for 663 yards and three touchdowns. In his two games, Frazer was 22-of-43 for 221 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions.

With Frazer at quarterback, the team looked out of sync at times. But he can’t be totally at fault as he, along with the rest of the team, were learning a new offense. Endres has had his moments but overall has looked good in the offense.

Hopefully the trend continues with Endres and the Huskies as they take on Louisville in front of a sold-out Rentschler Field on Saturday afternoon.

Randy Edsall: Cody’s The Guy Right Now [Desmond Conner – Hartford Courant]
