Huskies Roll Over Jaguars

UConn's Maya Moore goes up against Southern's Jamie Floyd during the first round of the women's basketball NCAA Tournament at the Ted Constant Convocation Center at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. March 21, 2010 (Bettina Hansen/Hartford Courant)

The road to San Antonio kicked off for the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Norfolk, VA.

And they had no problems with the Southern Jaguars as they went on to an easy 95-36 win at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

It’s the 73rd straight win for the Huskies who improve to 34-0. The Jaguars, out of the SWAC, finish up their season at 23-9.

Tina Charles led the way for the Huskies with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Maya Moore added 21 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Tiffany Hayes had 12 points and seven assists while Kalana Greene had 12 points and eight rebounds. Meghan Gardler came off the bench to add 10 points.

Hannah Kador paced the Jaguars with 10 points while Ashley Augerson had seven.

The 12 day lay-off for the Huskies seemed to affect them a little bit as they didn’t take great care of the ball. They committed 12 turnovers in the first half.

Southern got out to a quick 2-0 lead but UConn responded with a 15-2 run. With the Huskies leading 20-6, the Jaguars hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to eight.

But that’s as close as they would get as UConn responded with an 18-4 run and never looked back from there as they took a 52-29 lead at the half.

The Huskies were much more crisp in the second half on both sides of the ball as they held the Jaguars to just ten second half points while they shot 66.7%.

It wasn’t pretty for a bit in the first half due to the layoff but Geno Auriemma’s charges got the message in the second half when they looked like the team we’ve seen all season.

The Huskies now await the winner of the Temple/James Madison game that is currently being played. That game will take place on Tuesday, March 23 at time yet to be determined.

Notes and musings:

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 3/21

It was a good day for Tim Wakefield and the Boston Red Sox on Saturday afternoon as they beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-0 at City of Palms Park.

Wakefield looked great as he went five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and walking two while striking out three. Manny Delcarmen walked one in his inning while Brian Shouse allowed a hit with a strikeout. Fernando Cabrera threw a perfect inning and Joe Nelson gave up a hit and a walk before striking out the side.

Kevin Youkilis and Marco Scutaro both hit home runs for the Red Sox with Youk’s of the two-run variety and Scutaro’s was a solo shot. Red Sox minor leaguer Peter Hissey came up for the game and had two hits and two RBIs while Daniel Nava had a hit and an RBI. Dustin Pedroia also had two hits.

This afternoon, the Red Sox will be busy as they will send a split-squad to Dunedin to take on the Toronto Blue Jays. The players who don’t make the trip will stay behind to take on old friend Brad Mills and Houston Astros.

Both games will start at 1:05 p.m. and the game against the Blue Jays will be available on MLB GameDay audio. You can also catch it on the MLB At Bat app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The game against the Astros will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you can’t watch the game on television, it will be broadcast on WEEI 850 AM. It is also available on MLB.com if you have the MLB.tv or Gameday Audio package. You can also catch it on the MLB At Bat app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Felix Doubront, who was sent down yesterday, will come up and make the start against the Blue Jays. He’ll be looking to continue his seven inning scoreless streak during spring training. Shaun Marcum will start for the Blue Jays.

Jon Lester will make the start against the Astros and he’ll be followed by Jonathan Papelbon,  Hideki Okajima, Ramon Ramirez and Daniel Bard. Bud Norris will start for the Astros and he’ll be followed by Chris Sampson and Brian Moehler.

The Red Sox yesterday optioned left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront and catcher Mark Wagner to Triple-A Pawtucket and re-assigned infielder Gil Velazquez to minor league camp. John Lackey is scheduled to pitch for Single-A Salem in a minor league game vs. the Minnesota Twins Single-A affiliate on Monday at the Red Sox Player Development Complex beginning at 1 p.m.

With the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team kicking off their run for San Antonio tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the coverage map for tomorrow’s game against the Southern Jaguars.

The game will be broadcast in it’s entirety on ESPN2 in standard definition. If you’re like me and want to watch it in HD, unfortunately we are SOL. And if you’re like my brother and live in Hawaii, you’re screwed like a good portion of the country who will get whip-around coverage in standard definition.

As evidenced by the map below, ESPN2 will have whip-around coverage on ESPN2HD.

Jacoby Ellsbury & Josh Beckett Charity Wines

Jacoby Ellsbury & Josh Beckett Charity Wines

BOSTON BASEBALL CHARITY WINES RETURN:
JACOBY ELLSBURY & JOSH BECKETT MAKE ROSTER

Debuting from Longball Cellars are charity wines for Boston baseball stars Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Beckett. The players do not profit a single dime. Instead, 100% of their proceeds will raise big league dollars for local charities:

Jacoby Ellsbury: ZinfandEllsbury – benefiting the Navajo Relief Fund, Project Bread and the Ellsbury-Read Project.

Josh Beckett: Chardon-K – benefiting The Josh Beckett Foundation.

The names ZinfandEllsbury and Chardon-K are word plays of the wine varietals in the bottles: Red Zinfandel and Chardonnay. The 2010 wines are produced by acclaimed winery Clos LaChance out of San Martin, California.

Both wines are expected to retail for about $14 a bottle, and will be available beginning in May 2010 across New England, wherever wine is sold. For non-local members of “The Nation,” wines will be available for purchase online at www.charitywines.com.

Baseball enthusiasts and wine aficionados may recall that in 2007, Charity Wines debuted in Boston with wines from Manny Ramirez (Manny Being Merlot), Curt Schilling (Schilling Schardonnay) and Tim Wakefield (CaberKnuckle). The effort sold more than a quarter-million bottles. Charity Wines returned in 2008 with releases from David Ortiz (Vintage Papi), Jason Varitek (Captain’s Cabernet) and Kevin Youkilis (SauvignYoouuk Blanc). To date, more than $1,400,000 has been raised overall as a result of athlete wines and their contributions.

ABOUT CHARITY WINES

After personal tragedies involving friends and family with cancer and heart disease, Andrew Graff started Charity Wines, a philanthropic division of his Massachusetts based company, VinLozano Imports Inc. With the goal of pairing fine wine with great charities, the Longball Cellars brand was born. Nationwide, more than 30 professional athletes across baseball, football and hockey have teamed up with Charity Wines to raise funds for great causes. Visit www.CharityWines.com.

Red Sox sign LHP Alan Embree

Here’s the press release from the Boston Red Sox announcing the signing of Alan Embree to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

BOSTON — The Red Sox today announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Alan Embree to a 2010 minor league contract. In addition, Embree has been invited to Boston’s Major League Spring Training camp as a non-roster player. Embree will wear No. 43.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Embree, 40, spent 2009 with the Colorado Rockies, going 2-2 with a 5.84 ERA (16 ER/24.2 IP) in 36 relief appearances. His season was cut short when a batted ball fractured his right tibia on July 10.

The 16-year Major League veteran owns a 39-45 record with 25 saves and a 4.59 ERA (395 ER/774.0 IP) in 882 career games/four starts with the Indians (1992, 1995-96), Braves (1997-98), Diamondbacks (1998), Giants (1999-2001), White Sox (2001), Padres (2002, 2006), Red Sox (2002-05), Yankees (2005), Athletics (2007-08) and Rockies (2009). He ranks ninth all-time among Major League left-handers and second among active southpaws with 878 career relief outings.

He returns for a second stint in the Red Sox organization after going 8-9 with four saves and a 4.69 ERA (93 ER/178.1 IP) in 211 relief appearances with the club from 2002-05. He allowed earned runs in just one of his 19 postseason games with Boston, going 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA (2 ER/14.0 IP). Embree induced a ground ball by Ruben Sierra for the final out of Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS in Yankee Stadium.
