Evening Red Sox Delight – 7/19

Daisuke Matsuzaka (L), Ben Sheets (R)

The Boston Red Sox are out on the west coast as they begin a 10-game road trip against the AL West. Tonight they’ll kickoff a three-game set against the Oakland A’s at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Tonight’s game will start at 10:05 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the A’s television market on CSN California.. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Daisuke Matsuzaka looks to be a little more consistent than he has all season in his first start after the All-Star break. He’s made 12 starts and is 6-3 with a 4.56 ERA. He’s faced the A’s once this season, picking up the win back on June 2nd when he allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings. Dice-K has made six career starts against the A’s and is 3-1 with a 4.18 ERA. He’s made three career starts at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and is 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA.

Ben Sheets could be auditioning for other teams as the trade deadline approaches in his 20th start of the season. In his previous 19 starts, Sheets is 4-8 with a 4.63 ERA. He took the loss in that June 2nd game as he allowed four runs in six innings. That June 2nd start was also the first time he’d faced the Red Sox in his career.

David Ortiz Auctioning Off Home Run Derby Equipment

David Ortiz Children's Fund

Going… Going…Gone
David Ortiz Auctions Off Gear from 2010 Home Run Derby Championship

All Proceeds to Benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund

Boston, MA – July 19, 2010 – With one of the biggest swings in baseball, David Ortiz hit 32 Home Runs in the 2010 Home Run Derby and took home the title. Now, fans and collectors across the country have the opportunity to own the gear used by David Ortiz during the Derby.

Showing that he also has one of the biggest hearts in the game, David Ortiz will auction off the bat, cleats and batting gloves he used to make history as the first Red Sox Slugger to hold the title. All proceeds raised in the auction will benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, a non-profit organization committed to providing critical pediatric services to children in New England and the Dominican Republic.

“Winning the 2010 Home Run Derby was a thrill to me and I wanted to share that with all the fans of baseball,” said David Ortiz, designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox. “Most importantly, if offers an opportunity to raise funds for children who desperately need medical care. The auction is a way for me to take this amazing event and use it to help the kids.”

The online auction can be found at www.davidortizchildrensfund.org. Bids will be accepted through 12 midnight EST on July 27, 2010. The items included for auction are:

  • David Ortiz Autographed Home Run Derby Winning Nokona Bat
The actual bat used by David Ortiz in the Home Run Derby, covered in ball marks from the 32 Home runs he hit to win the title. The bat has been signed by David.
  • One-of-a-Kind Autographed Batting Gloves used by David Ortiz
Every baseball player needs a pair of great batting gloves and these autographed gloves helped David Ortiz beat out close friend Hanley Ramirez.
  • David Ortiz Autographed Home Run Derby Winning Reebok Cleats
Wearing this pair of autographed Reebok red and black cleats, David Ortiz stomped the competition and showed everyone why he’s an All-Star.
  • Limited Edition Home Run Derby Winning Replica Nokona Bat
David used only one bat to win the Home Run Derby. This is a limited edition autographed replica inscribed “2010 Home Run Derby Champion”.

The David Ortiz Children’s Fund began as a way for David to help children in his home country of the Dominican Republic. The Fund is proud to partner with Heart Care Dominicana, International Hospital for Children, and the Massachusetts General Hospital to fulfill its life-saving mission, linking pediatric critical care services to children in need. To date, the Fund has raised over $1 million for children in New England and the Dominican Republic and has given life, health, and hope to critically ill Dominican children.

About the David Ortiz Children’s Fund

The David Ortiz Children’s Fund (DOCF) is committed to helping children in New England and the Dominican Republic that do not have access to the critical pediatric services they need. The DOCF is proud to partner with Massachusetts General Hospital to fulfill its mission in New England and with Heart Care Dominicana and International Hospital for Children to fulfill its mission in the Dominican Republic. These organizations are committed to healing as many children as possible by providing critical pediatric healthcare.
