Red Sox News & Notes – 4/1

Boston Red Sox' Adrian Gonzalez(notes), center, is congratulated by teammates after his solo home run against the Tampa Bay Rays during the fourth inning of a spring training baseball game in Fort Myers, Fla., Tuesday, March 29, 2011.

Don’t look out your window this morning, especially if you live in New England, to believe me when I say spring is here. And when I say spring is here, what I really mean is that the Boston Red Sox are getting ready to play some baseball.

Thankfully, the person who does the schedule for MLB thought it was wise for the Red Sox to start the season on the road. It turned out to be a great idea with a little N’oreaster rolling through these parts.

Opening Day is always special, there’s no getting around that. To many, it means skipping work, heading to a local establishment and watching the game. For others, it means getting together with friends online and tweeting about the game while watching it. And for some, it’s just another day (booooo).

But now these games count. It’s game 1 of a 162 game grind and a loss isn’t going to eliminate you from the playoffs. But a win goes a long way in that 162 game grind.

And that’s what we’re expecting from the Red Sox this season. A lot of wins.

General manager Theo Epstein put together a squad that’s left many of his colleagues crying uncle. We know some teams will battle with the Red Sox all season long. And at the end of this wonderful 162 game grind, we can hope the Red Sox will be in the playoffs. They are built to win it all. It’s just a matter of avoiding the serious injuries during the season.

If that can happen, this could turn out to be a wonderful season for the boys in Beantown. Plus doesn’t 04+07=11.

Skipper Terry Francona announced his opening day lineup on Thursday and the only real surprise is the fact that J.D. Drew won’t be in the lineup. But then again, the Red Sox are facing Texas Rangers lefty C.J. Wilson, who is downright nasty on lefties. There are four lefties in the lineup as is so a fifth wouldn’t have been a smart managing move.

Thankfully, J.D. took it like a true professional and will be ready if called upon from the bench.

Now the wait begins until 4:05 p.m. I, for one, can’t wait. Hope you feel the same way.

Kemba Walker Wins Bob Cousy Award

STORRS, Conn. – It was announced by the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. that UConn junior guard Kemba Walker (Bronx, N.Y.) has been presented with the Bob Cousy Award as the Nation’s top point guard. Walker will lead UConn against Kentucky in the Final Four on Saturday, April 2 at 8:49 p.m. Eastern time. The game will be televised on CBS.

Kemba Walker is the nation's top point guard in 2011.The award is presented annually to the nation’s top point guard and is named for former Boston Celtic and Hall of Famer Bob Cousy. The other 2011 finalists included Norris Cole (Cleveland State), Jimmer Fredette (BYU), Nolan Smith (Duke) and Jordan Taylor (Wisconsin).

“I am thrilled that Kemba has been named the winner of the Bob Cousy Award. He is having one of the great seasons ever in college basketball history,” said Jim Calhoun, head coach of the Huskies and member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2005. “Beyond the stats, game-winning shots and accolades, he epitomizes the leadership that a great point guard must have and what he has done to lead our young team to a BIG EAST Championship and to a spot in the Final Four has been unforgettable.”

Walker has already been named a First-Team All-American by the USBWA, the Associate Press and Sporting News Magazine. Walker is still a finalist for the prestigious Wooden Award and NABC Player of the Year.

Walker has filled the stat sheet averaging 23.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game. The Bronx native set a new UConn single-season record with 931 points this year. On the season, he’s one of two players (Norris Cole – Cleveland State) to average over 20 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Among other records broken during Walker’s outstanding season include; Minutes total and per game (1,466 – 37.6 mpg), free throws attempted (302), free throws made (247) and field goals attempted (705). Walker also ranks second all-time with 305 field goals made, fourth all-time in single-season scoring average (23.9) and second in UConn history with 490 career free throws. He ranks seventh all-time with 1,749 career points.

Walker is also a finalist for the Naismith Award, presented to the nation’s top player. AT&T wireless customers — and sports fans on other wireless networks — will be able to text their votes for the player of their choice by texting VOTE to 345345. Fans will be eligible to cast their vote for the winner until 11:59 p.m. EDT on Saturday, April 2, 2011. AT&T is making the voting open to other wireless carriers, allowing even more fans to participate. Other wireless carriers must opt-in for their subscribers to participate. Standard messaging rates apply. Fans are allowed one vote per 24-hour period.

En route to the Final Four, UConn defeated No. 14 Bucknell in the NCAA Second Round, 81-52, before advancing past No. 6 Cincinnati in the NCAA Third Round, 69-58. UConn then earned a trip to the Final Four with a 74-67 victory over No. 2 San Diego State in the Sweet 16 and a thrilling 65-63 result over Arizona in the Elite Eight.

2011 Red Sox Opening Day Lineup

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona released his 2011 Opening Day Lineup for tomorrow’s game against the Texas Rangers.

  1. Boston Red SoxJacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  3. Carl Crawford, LF

  5. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
  6. David Ortiz, DH
  7. Mike Cameron, RF
  8. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
  9. Marco Scutaro, SS

SP – Jon Lester

I guess the only surprise here is the fact that J.D. Drew is not in the lineup. But considering the fact that Rangers starter C.J. Wilson is really tough on lefties, I can understand why Francona chose not to use Drew.

2011 Red Sox Radio Network

2011 Red Sox Radio Network

The Shaw’s WEEI Red Sox Radio Network looks much the same as it has for the last few seasons as Dave O’Brien and Joe Castiglione return for their 5th season together in the booth as the primary announcers for Boston Red Sox baseball.  In the absence of either O’Brien or Castiglione you will hear from fill-in’s Dale Arnold and Jon Rish.  All the games will be broadcast from the team’s flagship station WEEI-AM 850 in Boston to it’s network affiliates through out New England, New York, Florida, Colorado and Wyoming.  As well as having all the home games carried along the XM Satellite Radio network.

Castiglione, a Hamden CT native, joined to Red Sox broadcasts in 1983 and has worked with such luminaries as Bob Starr, Ken Coleman and Jerry Trupiano in his this his 29th season.  Castiglione, who grew up a Yankees fan, has become well known in Red Sox lore for his call f the final out of the 2004 World Series which ended the team 86 year drought without a championship.  When he is not in the radio booth you can usually find Castiglione teaching sports broadcasting at Northeastern University.  Joe has also called games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee Brewers in his career.

O”Brien, a New Hampshire native who enters his 5th season in Shaw’s WEEI booth, is probably the most familiar amongst the Red Sox radio crew for the non-Red Sox or non-baseball fan in the crowd due to his heavy schedule with ESPN.  In addition to his Red Sox duties, Obie does the Wednesday night games for ESPN with former Red Sox shortstop and AL Batting Champion Nomar Garciaparra.  O’Brien prior to joining the Red Sox was the play-by-play announcer for the Florida Marlins radio network from 1993 to 2001 when he left to go to ESPN where in addition to baseball he has called World Cup Soccer, college basketball, NBA,  MLS and the women’s college basketball Final Four.  He has also called games for the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons and the University of Georgia.

Arnold, who for many years was the mid day voice of WEEI is now the main fill-in for Red Sox baseball.  In the absence of either O’Brien or Castiglione, Arnold will come in to pinch hit.  In the past Arnold has done play-by-play for the Boston Bruins, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, New England Revolution and Boston Red Sox.  He is the only person to have called games for all five pro Boston area franchises.  Arnold, a Maine native, got his start in sports calling Maine Mariners AHL Hockey games and then moved to the NHL calling games for two years for the New Jersey Devils before coming back to New England to do the Patriots games on the radio.

Rish is entering his 6th season hosting the Red Sox pre-game and post-game shows on the Red Sox Radio Network, he also handles “”Sox Talk”  the call in show that airs during rain delays in the game.  In addition, Rish is one of the fill ins for Sox games in the absence of O’Brien or Castiglione.  In addition to WEEI, Rish has worked at ESPN Radio in Bristol CT as a radio Sports Center anchor, and hosted studio programming for major league baseball and the bowl championship series.  He was also the play-by-play announcer for Boston College Eagle’s men’s hockey and women’s basketball.

Over the air the Red Sox Radio Network has nearly 80 stations in 10 states.

2011 Red Sox Baseball on NESN

Don Orsillo & Jerry Remy Bobblehead desk

The Boston Red Sox return to NESN as their lone local television outlet for the sixth consecutive season and as a broadcaster of televised Red Sox baseball in New England for the 28th year in a row in 2011.  And like they have since 2001, Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy will bring you all the Red Sox action.  They are joined on the field for the fourth season by field reporter Heidi Watney.

Red Sox baseball on NESN actually starts with a two half hour pregame shows Red Sox 1st Pitch airs 60 minutes prior to the game and Red Sox Game Day Live air 30 minutes prior to the game hosted by Tom Caron with a crew of rotating analysts that include Hall of Fame writer Peter Gammons, Hall of Fame players Jim Rice and Dennis Eckersley..  It also includes segments with Boston Globe writers and Red Sox game analyst Jerry Remy.  The broadcasts concludes with a pair of post game shows “Extra Innings Live” and “Red Sox Final” also hosted by the same cast of characters.

Don Orsillo, a New England native, is entering his 10th season as the play by play voice of the Boston Red Sox on NESN.  Announcer Boy is a graduate of Northeastern University where he studied under Red Sox radio announcer Joe Castiglione.  Before he came to NESN, Orsillo was the play by play voice of the Springfield Falcons hockey team, the Pittsfield Mets and Pawtucket Red Sox.  The two-time New England EMMY winner called a no-hitter for Hideo Nomo in his first game covering the Red Sox.  In addition to his Red Sox duties he has called men’s college basketball and the Beanpot Hockey tournament for NESN.  He has also called Big East basketball games for the Big East Network and works for TBS during the MLB postseason calling one of the division series since 2007.

Jerry Remy, the Rem Dawg, is entering his 23rd season as the color analyst on Red Sox baseball.  Remy played with the California Angels and Boston Red Sox during a major league of 10 years that ended due to bad knees.  A Fall River native, he is also the first President of Red Sox Nation and owns two restaurants RemDawgs, a hot dog stand outside Fenway and Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill behind Fenway Park on Boylston Street.  In addition he also has a successful website, the Remy Report, and is the author of “Watching Baseball” and five children’s books based on Wally the Green Monster.  He is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame having been inducted in 2006.  In addition to his NESN work you will see Remy on occasion as a color analyst for regional MLB on FOX games usually involving the Red Sox.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Heidi WatneyHeidi Watney is starting her fourth season as the Red Sox field reporter during NESN broadcasts after replacing Tina Cervasio following the championship season of 2007.  Prior to working for NESN, Watney was a weekend tv sports anchor and a sports talk radio host in Fresno California.

The University of San Diego grad was the first runner up in the 2002 Miss California Pageant and she is the cousin of professional golfer Nick Watney, and the daughter of Fresno State golf coach Mike Watney.

Tom Caron, a Maine native, is the Red Sox studio host for the pregame and post game festivities through the year with many of the pregame shows coming from outside Fenway Park amongst the sea of Sox fans.  Caron who has been at NESN since 1995, has also hosted the Boston Bruins studio show, been the Red Sox field reporter and has done play by play for the Pawtucket Red Sox games on NESN as well as college basketball and college hockey. TC is a three-time New England EMMY winner and is also a frequent guest on sports talker, WEEI the Red Sox flagship station.

Peter Gammons is a Boston Sports Icon having started his career at the Boston Globe in 1969 covering Boston sports. He has also written columns for the Sporting News, been lead baseball columnist for Sports Illustrated and has been a baseball analyst for ESPN, the MLB Network and NESN.  Peter has also written several books, is a three-time National Sportswriter of the Year and in 2004 was selected as the 56th recipient of the J. G. Taylor Spink Award for outstanding baseball writing, given by the BBWAA, and was honored at the Baseball Hall of Fame during induction ceremonies on July 31, 2005.

Dennis Eckersley is a NESN studio analyst since 2002.  The Hall of Fame closer is only one of two players to have a 20-win and 50-save season in MLB history.  Eck played for the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals in a 24 year career. Eckersley also won the 1992 AL Cy Young Award and 1992 AL MVP Award becoming only the 8th player to win both awards in the same season.  In addition to his NESN work, Eck works as a studio analyst with TBS during the regular and post seasons.  He also was given his own dictionary by the Bleacher Report blog because of his own very colorful baseball vernacular, called The Eck-tionary.

Jim Rice is a NESN studio analyst since 2003 and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame after playing his entire career in Boston with the Red Sox from 1974 to 1989.  The 1978 AL MVP in his career hit for a .298 average with 382 HR, 1451 RBI and 2452 hits. His #14 is retired by the Red Sox and sits on the right field facade at Fenway Park. Jim Ed is also heavily involved in community service with the Jimmy Fund and MLB’s RBI program.
