Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/18

Randy Wolf (L), Jon Lester (R)

After an offensive explosion in the win last night, the Boston Red Sox look to make it two in a row over the Milwaukee Brewers in game two of a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and you can watch the game on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Brewers television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports North. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester goes for a MLB-leading 10th win in his 15th start of 2011. In his previous 14 starts, Lester is 9-2 with a 3.73 ERA. He’s never faced the Brewers in his career. Lester has made 14 career interleague starts and is 8-2 with a 2.99 ERA. In three interleague starts in 2010, Lester was 2-1 with a 1.64 ERA (4 ER/22 IP).

Randy Wolf makes his 15th start of 2011 for the Brew Crew and his first against the Red Sox since 2004. In his 14 starts this season, Wolf is 4-4 with a 3.20 ERA. He’s made five career starts against the Red Sox and is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA. Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA (6 ER/19.1 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/18

Dustin Pedroia(notes) #15 and Adrian Gonzalez(notes) #28 of the Boston Red Sox celebrate after they scored runs in the third inning on a hit by KevinYoukillis #20 against the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park on June 17, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Apparently the National League can’t slow the down the Boston Red Sox offensive juggernaut at least for now. The Red Sox offense continued their dominance at the plate last night at Fenway Park in a 10-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

After the 1st inning though, it looked like it might be just another typical John Lackey start where he sucks. And I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of him at all. But after allowing two runs in the 1st inning and then two more in the 3rd inning, Lackey settled in and retired 15 straight batters before Nyjer Morgan singled in the 8th inning. But Lackey promptly got out of the inning when Ryan Braun flew out to Jacoby Ellsbury who doubled off Morgan at first.

John Lackey(notes) #41 of the Boston Red Sox reacts in the third inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park on June 17, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.Lackey needed 58 pitches to get through the first three innings. He then needed just 53 more to get through the next five innings. Hopefully Lackey bought Dustin Pedroia an adult beverage or two last night because if it wasn’t for the Laser Show flashing the leather in the 3rd inning, Lackey might have been done sooner rather than later.

With the bases loaded and no out in the 3rd, Casey McGehee smoked a shot up the middle but Pedroia made an incredible diving start to start a 4-6-3 double play. Although the tying run scored on the play, this is where Lackey began his run of retiring 15 straight batters. Honestly, it wasn’t like Lackey was hit hard in that inning, the balls just happened to fall in the right places.

But without Pedroia stopping that ball, it’s quite possible the Brewers could have taken a 5-4 lead and still had two runners on the bases and no outs.

It didn’t take long for the Red Sox offense to pick up their pitcher in the 1st after he had allowed two runs.

Ellsbury started it with a solo home run off of Brewers starter Shaun Marcum. After Pedroia flew out, Adrian Gonzalez picked up the first of his three hits on the night with a single. Two batters later, David Ortiz brought home Speedy Gonzalez from first base to tie the game up at two.

The bad news that came from the 1st inning for the Red Sox is the fact that Carl Crawford had to leave the game after straining his hamstring beating out an infield single. He was diagnosed with a grade 1 strain of his hamstring and will be reevaluated later today before a decision is made as to whether or not he’ll be placed on the DL.

Marcum left the game with an injury after the first and the Red Sox got to his replacement Marco Estrada for two more runs in the second.

Pedroia reached on a two-out walk and went to third on a Gonzo bot double. They both came into score on a Kevin Youkilis single to make it 4-2. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they would lose Youk after the 4th inning with a case of the ol’ “intestional turmoil”. By the way, there’s no truth to the rumor that the skidmarks on Youk’s pants were from a case of the runs.

The hitting machine that is Gonzalez put the Red Sox ahead for good in the 5th when he went over the Green Monster for his 15th home run of the season and a MLB-leading 62nd RBI. Oh by the way, those three hits for Gonzo on the night raised his average to a paltry .352. Remember folks, we get seven more years of this.

The offense would bust this game open in the 6th and 7th innings with five more runs.

It was great to see Lackey bounce back with his third straight win in as many starts after returning from the disabled list. But it was also nice to see the offense not let up after being slowed down just a tad in Tampa. The Red Sox win last night also increased their lead back to 2.5 games over the New York Yankees who lost to the Chicago Cubs.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Matt Gedman earned a First-Team All-Star selection by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association, was named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference First Team and was chosen as the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America District I Player of the Year. He led the A-10 with a .402 average (76-for-189) in 45 games for the Minutemen this season and posted the second-highest hits total in school history for a single season.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/17

Infielder Adrian Gonzalez(notes) #28 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates his ninth inning home run against the Tampa Bay Rays during the game at Tropicana Field on June 16, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

On Baseball Tonight last night, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said that Clay Buchholz had no-hit stuff against the Tampa Bay Rays. Unfortunately for Buchholz, his back acted up early and affected his performance once again.

Luckily though for Buchholz, the offense staked him to an early lead and the Red Sox bullpen helped him out as they picked up a 4-2 win to close out the road trip at 8-1. And remember folks, that nine-game road trip the Red Sox just partook in was against AL East teams.

The lead for the Red Sox in the AL East is 1.5 games over the New York Yankees and now 5.5 games over the Rays.

Now I’m not sure I agree with Schilling’s assessment but then again I am no baseball expert. From what I saw, he was able to make use of all his pitches. But you could tell his back was bothering him from about the second inning on. And the reason you could tell is the fact that he slowed down.

Normally Buchholz works at a pretty quick pace on the mound. But when his back stiffens up, he slows to a crawl and tries to work through. And what happens then is he tries to overcompensate. And that right there is not something you want to see because that can lead to further trouble possibly in your elbow or shoulder. That would be something that Buchholz and the Red Sox would like to avoid.

Whether or not Buchholz goes on the DL remains to be seen. But it might be wise for him to go on it just to get his back ready for the grind of the rest of the season.

The bullpen hasn’t had to be used as much in tight situations due to the offensive explosion over the course of the road trip. They outscored their opponents 90-42. But they came through when needed last night.

Alfredo Aceves took over for Buchholz, who went five innings and departed after 81 pitches. Aceves pitched well in 1 2/3 innings allowing a home run to Casey Kotchman that cut the lead to 3-2. Daniel Bard took over for Aceves and went 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief only needing 15 pitches.

Jonathan Papelbon did make it interesting though in the 9th. He allowed the first two batters to reach base on a double and an infield single. But he settled down by striking out the final two batters he faced to notch his 13th save of 2011.

Offensively, the Red Sox did their damage against David Price in the first two innings when he struggled. Of course Price’s struggles didn’t help Buchholz out health wise.

In the first inning, Dustin Pedroia reached on a one out walk. He quickly went to third base on an Adrian Gonzalez double. Price then hit Kevin Youkilis in the shoulder to load up the bases. It remains to be seen whether or not Price hit Youk on purpose but Youk did have some words for him going down to first base. Price’s struggled continued as he walked David Ortiz to force in the first run of the game.

The Red Sox got two more runs in the second that started when Jarrod Saltalamacchia doubled with one out. Darnell McDonald, who started the game for Jacoby Ellsbury, singled in Salty and ended up on second on the throw home. He wouldn’t be there long as Pedroia doubled to push the Red Sox lead to 3-0.

Gonzalez would give the Red Sox an insurance run in the 9th when he did his own version of the Laser Show putting one into the right field seats.

Interleague play now starts up for the Red Sox and after these next six games against the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres things will get interesting. In having two of the hottest hitters in the game right now in Big Papi and Gonzo, Terry Francona will have some interesting decisions to make. It’s not like last year where both Youk and Mike Lowell could both play first and third getting both of their bats in the lineup or having Big Papi play first.

If you take Gonzo out of the lineup, you lose something. If you take Big Papi out of the lineup, you lose something as well. But let’s cross that bridge when we get to it. For now, it’s a three-game set with the NL Central-leading Brewers to worry about.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
