UConn Depth Chart For Western Michigan

Western Michigan Broncos @ UConn Huskies

UConn Huskies head coach Paul Pasqualoni has released his depth chart for Saturday afternoon’s game with the Western Michigan Broncos and there’s only one change from last week’s depth chart against the Buffalo Bulls. And that only comes because of an injury.

With cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson out with a sprained MCL for the next couple of weeks, Gary Wilburn steps in to start for him.

Despite saying on Sunday, that quarterback Johnny McEntee was a step above QB’s Scott McCummings and Michael Nebrich, the threesome is still listed in an “OR” situation. Take that for what it’s worth folks as I think we’ll be seeing a lot of McEntee with McCummings in when the situation warrants the “Wildcat” formation.

Afternoon Red Sox Misery – 9/26

Josh Beckett (L), Tommy Hunter (R)

With a magic number of three entering the final three games of the season, the Boston Red Sox know what has to be done to guarantee clinching the AL Wild Card. Tonight, they’ll continue their push towards that in the first of three games against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Today’s first pitch for game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and can be seen on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN.  Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may also be able to catch the game on the MLB Network. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Josh Beckett makes his 30th and probably most important start of 2011 tonight. In his previous 29 starts, Beckett is 13-7 with a 2.70 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Orioles this year and is 1-1 with a 6.38 ERA. Beckett’s made 17 career starts against the Orioles and is 7-4 with a 3.99 ERA. 11 of those starts have come at Camden Yards where he is 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA.

Tommy Hunter makes his 11th start (12th appearance) for the Orioles and 19th overall appearance this season. In his previous 18 appearances (10 starts) between the Orioles and Rangers, Hunter is 4-4 with a 4.86 ERA. With the Orioles, he is 3-3 with a 5.30 ERA in 11 appearances (10 starts). He’s made one start against the Red Sox this season which came in his last start on September 21st. In that start, he picked up a no decision after allowing four runs in 6.2 innings of work. He’s made five career starts against the Red Sox and is 2-1 with a 7.50 ERA (21 ER/24 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/26

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) #2 of the Boston Red Sox watches his three-run home run in the top of the 14th inning against the New York Yankees on September 25, 2011 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City

After falling in game one of the day/night doubleheader with the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox had their backs up against the wall in game two.

The Tampa Bay Rays had won earlier in the afternoon which pulled them to within a ½ game of the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card standings. And after the Yankees had batted in the 1st inning, things weren’t looking so good for the Red Sox.

The Yankees put up three runs that inning against John Lackey with the Red Sox having to face the Yankees second best starting pitcher this season in Ivan Nova. But Lackey settled down after that horrid 1st inning, something we’ve grown accustomed to here during this awful month of September.

Lackey would leave the game in the 7th, something that hadn’t been seen from a Red Sox starter in a long while, with the lead but also with a runner on base. Unfortunately, Alfredo Aceves allowed him to score and keep the game tied there until the 14th inning.

In between though, the bullpen was outstanding.

Some may say Jacoby Ellsbury was the hero of the game with his three-run blast in the top half of the 14th but I beg to differ. To me, there was one hero and one alone,

And that man is Jonathan Papelbon, who showed Theo Epstein why you can’t let him go in free agency.

He entered the game in the bottom of the 9th inning with runners on first and second and two outs. He got a strikeout of Austin Romine to end that threat and then struck out three of the next four batters he faced.

Had it not been for Papelbon and the rest of the bullpen who pitched after, Ellsbury may not have had the chance to breathe life back into the Red Sox clubhouse and the fans across the world.

The mission is simple for the Red Sox. Sweep all three games in Baltimore and they’re in the playoffs. With the one game lead, a magic numberand three to play, IF they do lose, the need the Rays to lose that night to the Yankees as well.

They’ve got the right man for the job to get the first win in Josh Beckett on the mound. We just need to hope his wife Holly, who is due any day now with their first child, doesn’t go into labor before the game. Hopefully the little future Beckett can hold out until his/her father pushes the Red Sox even closer to the playoffs.

Report: John Lackey Divorcing His Wife Krista

John Lackey(notes) #41 of the Boston Red Sox reacts after allowing a two-run double to Mark Teixeira(notes) #25 of the New York Yankees (not pictured) during the bottom of the first inning on September 25, 2011 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City.

I’m wondering if Boston Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey‘s ire towards the Boston media after Sunday’s second game had anything to do with this.

According to TMZ, Lackey has filed for divorce from his wife Krista who as we learned during spring training, was battling breast cancer.

Lackey filed on August 30, according to court docs in Texas, claiming “the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.” Krista and John got married in November, 2008.

Sources close to the family tell TMZ … Krista underwent a double mastectomy back in March and underwent chemo as recently as June.

The divorce petition says John and Krista had a prenup. It also says Lackey has “separate property” he wants to keep for himself.

I’m not here to judge Lackey’s decision about divorcing his wife. Obviously that is between them and them alone.

What bothers me is what happened before this came out on TMZ at Lackey’s postgame presser.

“Let me tell you the truth. Thirty minutes before the game, I got a text message on my cellphone from one of you … somebody in the media, talking about personal stuff,” said Lackey. “And I shouldn’t even be standing up here having to deal with it. I’m sitting here listening to music. I don’t know who got my phone number, but that’s over the line. Anything else you guys want to talk about?”

Initially the buzz on Twitter after the game was that it might have been one of the Boston media members that texted him. But seeing how this report of Lackey filing divorce papers coming out on TMZ after the incident, I wonder if it was someone from TMZ that got his number somehow from the papers or another source.

Either way, whether a member of the Boston media or any other news organization or even a tabloid like TMZ, contacting him like he was, 30 minutes before he’s scheduled to pitch, is inappropriate and just wrong. The last thing he needed was another distraction and while I haven’t been his biggest fan this season, I am on his side in this.

I know people want to be first in getting the story in this day and age of social media but there’s a time and a place for it. Just not when the dude is pitching perhaps the biggest game of the season for the Red Sox.

2011 BlogPoll Top 25 Ballot – Week 5

As many of you know, I am one of the voters in the BlogPoll Top 25. Each week, bloggers across the country representing the various FBS schools get together and put together their own top 25’s. Here at SOX & Dawgs, we are representing the UConn Huskies. The votes are then tabulated on Mondays.

Each week we are asked to do an initial ballot. This allows you the reader to let us know in the comments whether you agree with my choices or not. The initial ballots will normally be done on Sunday.

After I check the comments for the initial ballot, I then resubmit my final ballot for the week. If there are comments, I’ll take them into consideration before submitting the final ballot by 8 a.m. on Monday.

I made the change at the top with LSU jumping from No. 3 to No. 1. I felt as though they were more impressive in their games than Oklahoma and Alabama. Some may disagree with me there but that’s my opinion.

No other big changes to the poll.

With North Carolina falling out of my poll, Michigan State jumps back in. They hadn’t gotten any respect from me in earlier polls so I felt as though it was best to get them in there and show them that respect they deserve.

Sunday, Bloody, Sunday…Patriots Add To New Englanders Woes

Buffalo Bills' Drayton Florence celebrates his interception for a touchdown against the New England Patriots during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game in Orchard Park, N.Y., Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011.

Sunday’s used to be a great day, a day I looked forward to, especially at this time of the year with the Red Sox setting their rotation for the playoffs and the Patriots blowing teams out.

What the hell happened?

The New England Patriots were winners of 15 consecutive games against the Buffalo Bills heading into Sunday’s match up at the Ralph.  Well after four Tom Brady interceptions, a drive that the Buffalo touchdown should have been credited to the officials, a bizarre second time out called and 10 seconds mysteriously disappearing from the clock that streak no longer exists.

The Buffalo Bills, the NFL’s only CFL team, beat the New England Patriots, 34-31 on a weird winning drive and a last second field goal Sunday afternoon.

After jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter on Brady touchdown passes to Wes Welker and two to Rob Gronkowski the game looked like not only was it potentially over but that the Patriots were going to whip the Bills to the Canadian border and back again.

Defensively CB Kyle Arrington had two INT’s that stopped two Buffalo drives and a shorthanded secondary was looking pretty stellar early on.

But something happened on the way to winning the 16th game in a row over Buffalo.  Someone forgot to tell the Bills to rollover.

Buffalo was able to cut the lead to 21-10 by halftime after a Steven Jackson TD catch and a Ryan Lindell field goal.

Buffalo scored it’s first touchdown near the end of the second quarter as the New England defense gave up 96-yards rather easily that lead to a Ryan Fitzpatrick TD pass to Johnson of 11-yards.

Brady didn’t help matters as he threw a pair of first half picks.  One bounced off of the hands of Danny Woodhead near the Buffalo 10-yard line and was grabbed on the deflection.  This led to the Buffalo field goal and ended up being a 10-point swing as the Patriots were looking to score.

An earlier Brady interception was also the product of a tipped ball in the red zone once again killing a New England Drive.

The second half didn’t play out much better as the defense was constantly challenged and the offense kept shooting itself in the foot courtesy of the league’s MVP.

The third INT of Brady’s day was intended for a very well covered Chad Ochocinco that was an exceptionally poor read by Brady, who tried to force the ball to Ochocinco and Leodis McKelvin undercut the route and ended up with the ball.

Buffalo cut the Patriots lead to 21-17 when a wide open Scott Chandler caught a 4-yard TD pass from Fitzpatrick in the 3rd quarter.  The Patriots extended their lead to a touchdown when they answered with a Stephen Gostkowski 23-yard field goal.

Buffalo totally was back into the game and actually claimed the lead 31-24 after scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns within 14 seconds.  They scored on offense when Fred Jackson was able to get in from the 1-yard line and after the ensuing kickoff Drayton Florence had a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown and the Bills fans were bringing down the house on a lovely fall Canadian day.

You can credit the Jackson run to the officials though, who called 48 yards in penalties on that drive.  One was a phantom roughing the passer call, the second was a phantom illegal contact call and the third was a very subjective pass interference call in the end zone.  That put the ball on the one-yard line and set the stage for Jackson’s game tying TD run.

After a shaky drive got the Patriots into the red zone, Brady was able to find Welker for his second TD catch of the day with a 4th down pass of 6 yards and once again we were tied.

But not for long.

Buffalo once again responded with some quick hits against an apparently gassed New England secondary.  A bizarre series happened when the Bills had apparently scored but the play was over turned after review.

First an additional 10 seconds ran off the clock after the player should have been marked down, then Bill Belichick took a second timeout so he could argue with officials over the time not being put back on the clock as part of the review.  And then Buffalo basically ran out the clock allowing Lindell to kick a game winning 18-yard field goal as time expired to snap the NFL’s longest current losing streak to one team.

The spread (Patriots minus 9) was not covered.  But the over/under (53 1/2) was.  I am now 2-1 vs. the spread and 3 of 3 calling the under/over.

The Patriots lead the series 61-41-1

New England had won 15 straight games in the series; it was there first loss to the Bills since Opening Day 2003 when Buffalo dismantled New England 38-0 at home.

The 15 game win streak against one team was the third longest in NFL history.  San Francisco had a 17 game win streak over the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams from 1990-98 and Miami had a 20 game win streak over Buffalo from 1970-79.

New England is 49-15 vs. the AFC East since 2001.

An AFC East rival has not swept the Patriots in a season series since 2000 when Miami and New York swept them.  Buffalo will have that chance in Week 17 at Gillette Stadium.

Bill Belichick coached teams are 20-4 vs. Buffalo. Belichick was 0-1 against the Bills as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Bill Belichick has 179 wins – 10th all-time.

Tom Brady is now 17-2 vs. Buffalo.

Brady was 30 of 45 for 387 yards; 4 TD’s and 4 INT’s.

He is the first QB in NFL history to throw from 1200 plus yards in the seasons first three games.

This was Brady’s 6th career 4 INT game the others were in 2006 vs. Indianapolis; 2005 vs. Kansas City, 2004 in Miami; 2003 in Buffalo and 2001 in Denver.

Brady is 50-23 on the road in his career in the regular season.

Brady’s 4 TD passes give him 272 in his career he is now 10th all-time.  Joe Montana is 9th with 273.

WR Wes Welker now has catches in 82 consecutive games including playoffs, 68 as a Patriot.  The last time Welker did not have a catch in a game was 12/24/05 as a Dolphin.

Welker set a franchise record with 217 receiving yards on 16 catches.  The previous record was 214 yards set by Terry Glenn in 1999.

The Patriots released TE Dan Gronkowski, a Buffalo-area native, on Friday.  Practice squad S Ross Ventrone took his roster spot.  LB A.J. Edds was re-signed by the team to the practice squad.

Since 2000 the Patriots have the 2nd best road record in the NFL at 58-32.  Only Indianapolis 59-30 has better road record in the same span.

Since 2001, the Patriots are 23-11 in September that’s the second best record among all NFL teams behind only Indianapolis who is 26-8.

The Patriots have scored 30 or more points in 11 consecutive regular season games.

New England is now plus 2 in turnover differential.

The Bills are 22-29-1 as the home team in the series.

Buffalo is 21-42 vs. the AFC East since 2001.

Bills head coach Chan Gailey is now 1-3 vs. the Patriots in his career, 1-2 with Buffalo and 0-1 with Dallas.

Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is 1-3 vs. New England and 15-24-1 in his NFL career with Buffalo, Cincinnati and St. Louis.

RB Fred Jackson had back-to-back 100 yard rushing games in the first two games of the season but New England held him to 74 yards on 12 carries with 1 TD.

Bills CB Aaron Williams was carted off the field but was moving his extremities and waving to fans as he was wheeled off.

Carl Cheffers was the game referee.  The temp at kickoff was 78 and sunny.

Referee’s report on the second New England time out and Bill Belichick’s explanation of the situation.

Afternoon Red Sox Misery – 9/25

John Lackey (L), Ivan Nova (R)

After falling in game one this afternoon, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid falling into a tie for the AL Wild Card in a must win game in the finale of a three-game set with the New York Yankees tonight at Yankee Stadium.

Today’s first pitch for game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Yankees television market, you can catch the game on YES.  And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

If John Lackey wants to earn his paycheck for the month, he can do it by getting a win in his 28th start of the season. In his previous 27 starts, Lackey is 12-12 with a 6.49 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Yanks this season and is 2-1 with a 6.50 ERA. He’s made 22 career starts against the Yankees and is 8-9 with a 4.69 ERA.  Nine of those starts have come in the Bronx where he is 3-4 with a 4.13 ERA.

Ivan Nova looks to help bury the Red Sox in his 28th appearance (27th start) of 2011. In his previous 27 appearances (26 starts), Nova is 16-4 with a 3.62 ERA. He picked up a no decision in his only start of the seaason against the Red Sox on April 9th. In that start, he allowed four runs in 4.1 innings of work. He’s made three career appearances (two starts) against the Red Sox and is 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA (9 ER/11.1 IP).
