Connecticut Whale 4, Springfield Falcons 2

By Brian Ring

Springfield, MA, September 28, 2011 – The Connecticut Whale defeated the Springfield Falcons, 4-2, Wednesday night in American Hockey League preseason action at the MassMutual Center.

CT WhaleScott Tanski scored twice for the Whale and Tommy Grant added three assists in the win, while Phil Ginand assisted on both of Springfield’s goals for the Falcons.

“It wasn’t a giant deviation from what we look for every night,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “They just happened to do it rather well tonight and cashed in on their chances.

The Whale had jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 26 seconds into the first, as Kelsey Tessier crashed the net and beat Springfield goaltender Mike Spillane (18 saves) off a pass from Grant.

Tanski’s first goal extended the lead to 2-0 on a nice tip-in in front of Spillane, as Grant earned his second assist of the night on a pass from the corner. T.J. Fast also assisted on the play.

Connecticut extended its lead to 3-0 6:08 into the second period, as Jordan Owens beat Spillane high to the blocker side for his first goal since returning to Hartford’s AHL club. Kale Kerbashian earned his second point in as many nights with the assist.

Tanski and Grant connected again with 1:24 left into the second period.  Falcons goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson (12 saves) stopped Grant’s initial bid, but Grant found Tanski with a pass in the slot for the 4-0 advantage. Tessier recorded his second point of the night with the secondary assist.

“You’re getting opportunities, you’re getting looks, you’ve got to make the most of it,” said Gernander of Tanski, an undrafted right wing who had spent the last four seasons with the Brampton Battalion of the OHL.

Springfield closed the gap to 4-1 just 41 seconds into the third frame, when Tom Mele scored on Whale goaltender Jerry Kuhn (17 saves).  Phil Ginand and Obi Aduba assisted on Mele’s goal on Kuhn, who had replaced Connecticut starter Cam Talbot (11 saves) midway through the second period.

Wade MacLeod scored for the Falcons on the power-play to draw Springfield within a pair at 4-2 at the 9:44 mark of the third. Ginand recorded his second assist of the night and Dalton Prout also assisted on MacLeod’s tally.

Connecticut will finish its preseason slate against the Worcester Sharks, with games Friday at Quinnipiac University’s TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden (7:00 PM faceoff) and Sunday at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell (2:00 PM faceoff).

Afternoon Red Sox Torture – 9/28

Jon Lester (L), Alfredo Simon (R)

The Boston Red Sox face another must win situation tonight in the season finale with the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

If the Red Sox win and the Tampa Bay Rays lose, the Red Sox win the AL Wild Card. If they lose and Rays win, the Red Sox are going home for the offseason. However, if both teams win or both teams lose, then they’ll play a one-game playoff on Thursday at 4:07 p.m. at Tropicana Field.

Today’s first pitch for game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and can be seen on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN.  Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may also be able to catch the game on the ESPN. The game is also online at ESPN3.com where available. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Jon Lester will be called upon by Terry Francona to keep the Red Sox season alive in his 31st and most important start of 2011. In his previous 30 starts, Lester is 15-9 with a 3.49 ERA. His only start of 2011 against the Orioles came back on April 28th when he gave up two runs in eight innings of work. He’s made 17 career starts against the Birds and is 14-0 with a 2.33 ERA. Nine of those starts have come at Camden Yards where he is 7-0 with a 2.47 ERA.

Alfredo Simon will try and play spoiler in his 16th start (23rd appearance) in 2011. In his previous 22 appearances (15 starts), Simon is 4-9 with a 4.85 ERA. He’s made one start against the Red Sox this season and that came back on July 5th. He took the loss in that start after allowing three runs in 4.2 innings of work. Simon has made seven career appearances (one start) against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA (6 ER/9.2 IP).

Garin Cecchini Only Red Sox Farmhand in Baseball America’s Top 20 NY-Penn League Prospects

Baseball America is busy right now putting together its top 20 prospects lists by league now that the minor league baseball season is over. They got it started with the Arizona League, the Gulf Coast League, Appalachian League, Pioneer League and the Northwest League.

Boston Red SoxNow it’s time to take a look at where any Red Sox farmhands ranked in the top 20 of the NY-Penn League where the Lowell Spinners play. The Red Sox only managed one prospect in the top 20 and that was third baseman Garin Cecchini

He was a fourth round draft choice of the Red Sox back in 2010 and didn’t play professionally last year due to an ACL injury suffered in high school. His first season in the minors came with the Spinners this year where he hit .298 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

Unfortunately for Cecchini, a wrist injury sidelined him after playing in 32 games. He was listed on the roster for the 2011 Instructional League for the Red Sox.

The next look at where Red Sox farmhands rank in their respective league comes in the should come later today or tomorrow when Baseball America looks at the top 20 prospects for the South Atlantic League.

Two Red Sox Farmhands In Top 20 GCL Prospects By Baseball America

Baseball America is busy right now putting together its top 20 prospects lists by league now that the minor league baseball season is over. They got started last week with the Arizona League, the Gulf Coast League, Appalachian League and Pioneer League.

Boston Red SoxSince the Boston Red Sox don’t participate in the Arizona, Appy Leagues or Pioneers Leagues, we’ll take a look at where their farmhands land in the GCL Top 20.

The Red Sox had two farmhands ranked in the top 20 as right-handed pitcher Raul Alcantara came in at No. 6 with shortstop Jose Vinicio coming at No. 7.

Alcantara was signed as an international minor league free agent by the Red Sox in 2009 and spent the 2010 season with the Dominican League Red Sox. He spent 2011 with the GCL Red Sox as well as the Lowell Spinners.

In nine starts for the GCL Red Sox, he was 1-1 with a 0.75 ERA (4 ER/48 IP). The 18 year-old made four starts for the Spinners where he was 0-3 with a 6.23 ERA (12 ER/17.1 IP).

Vinicio was signed as an international minor league free agent by the Red Sox in 2009 as well and has spent the past two seasons with the GCL Red Sox. This year in 50 games, he hit .291 with two home runs, 18 RBIs and 19 stolen bases.

The next look at where Red Sox farmhands rank in their respective league comes in the next post when Baseball America looks at the top 20 prospects for the NY/Penn League.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/28

Ryan Lavarnway(notes) #60 of the Boston Red Sox (R) celebrates with David Ortiz(notes) #34 after hitting a three RBI home run against the Baltimore Orioles during the fourth inning at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on September 27, 2011 in Baltimore, Maryland.

With his Boston Red Sox squad reeling over the past month, skipper Terry Francona has been trying some different things out in his lineup hoping for someone to spark the team.

He moved Carl Crawford up in the order having him batting second only to see it not work out. He’d also tweaked where a few other guys hit in the lineup and even had Jed Lowrie batting cleanup on Tuesday night in Baltimore.

But the one move he made on Tuesday, precipitated by injuries to Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jason Varitek, turned out to be that spark the Red Sox needed. And it came at the right time when the team needed a win.

Ryan Lavarnway made his MLB start behind the dish last night and delivered at the plate and behind it.

He had two home runs, including a 3-run johnson that put the Red Sox up for good, in their 8-7 win over the Baltimore Orioles. The home runs were the first ones of his career. And oh by the way, he had a good night behind the plate throwing out Adam Jones stealing third and made a great defensive play on a bunt in the 9th inning that prevented the go-ahead run from gettting on base.

With Saltlamacchia probably available tonight, Tito has a decision to make. Does he ride the hot bat of Lavarnway with Jon Lester on the mound? Or does he go with Salty with whom Lester is more comfortable throwing to?

Personally, I thought Lavarnway did a great job behind the plate last night. He wasn’t calling his own game as Erik Bedard did that for himself. When he wasn’t sure of something, he went out to the mound to make sure he and the pitcher were on the right page. I’d also have to think he did a lot of talking with Salty and Tek between innings as well like he did before the game.

My guess is though that Tito may ask Lester who he wants back there. You want him to be comfortable on the mound, especially given what’s on the line tonight. But then again, Tito does like to ride the hot bat when he can.

So what is on the line tonight for the Red Sox.

If they win, they are guaranteed at minimum to play on Thursday. However if the Tampa Bay Rays lose to the New York Yankees, the Red Sox are the AL Wild Card. If the Red Sox lose and Rays win, they’re probably making plans to meet up with me out here in Hawaii.

So in a nutshell, both win or both lose, they play Thursday at 4:07 p.m. at Tropicana Field. If one team wins and one team loses, the losing team is going on vacation.

I’m also going to say that just about everyone who is healthy is available in the bullpen. And yes that probably even includes last night’s bullpen savior in Alfredo Aceves who threw 3.2 innings after Bedard exited after 3.1 innings of work.

While the Red Sox shouldn’t be in this situation, unfortunately it was it is. So even though the regular season isn’t over, the playoffs really start tonight for the Red Sox. They know what they need to do to continue playing, they just have to go out and execute it.

And, I for one, know they can do it.

We’ll be back later with tonight’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, news and any links from the day. But for now, enjoy the overnight links by click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Albany Devils 3, Connecticut Whale 1

By Brian Ring

Hartford, CT, September 27, 2011 – The Connecticut Whale fell to the Albany Devils, 3-1, Tuesday night in their preseason opener at Trinity College’s Koeppel Community Sports Center.

CT WhaleNathan Perkovich scored the game-winning goal for Albany and former Wolf Pack forward Chad Wiseman had a goal and an assist in the Devils’ win over the Whale. Kale Kerbashian scored the lone goal for Connecticut.

“We’re evaluating players and obviously there’s things from a team perspective that we’d like to do better,” said fifth-year Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “I thought we had a real good hard-working first period. We haven’t worked a ton on special teams and that was a big difference in tonight’s game.”

The Devils broke a scoreless tie with 3:23 left to play in the first period as Wiseman scored on the power-play, putting his own rebound past Whale starter Chad Johnson (13 saves). Eric Gelinas and Mike Sislo recorded the assists on the first goal of the AHL preseason, with the Whale’s Sam Klassen off the ice for boarding.

Kerbashian tied the game for the Whale 7:42 into the second period following a failed Devils clear, beating Albany goaltender Keith Kinkaid (30 saves) with a backhander under the goaltender’s left pad. Matt Rust and Tommy Grant assisted on the score.

The rest of the second remained tied, as the Whale went scoreless during five power-play opportunities afforded to them by the Devils in the frame.

Albany again capitalized on the power-play at 3:21 of the third period, as Perkovich put the Devils ahead for good, 2-1, scoring high to the glove side on Whale goaltender Jason Missiaen (nine saves). The goal was assisted by Brandon Burlon.

The Devils extended their lead to 3-1 with 10:36 remaining in the third, as Darcy Zajac found the range with a snap shot low to the stick side of Missiaen. Wiseman earned the lone assist on the goal, his second point of the night.

The Whale will be in preseason action again Wednesday night, when they face the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center (7:00 PM faceoff). Connecticut will play their last two tune-ups against the Worcester Sharks, with games Friday at Quinnipiac University’s TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden (7:00 PM faceoff) and Sunday at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell (2:00 PM faceoff).

Patriots Release Cohen; Bring Back Warren

The New England Patriots released recently signed DL Landon Cohen on Tuesday after afternoon.  Cohen was brought back just last week when Myron Pryor was placed on the IR with a season ending injury.

Gerard Warren #62 of the New England Patriots watches from the sideline in the second half against the New York Giants on September 1, 2011 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.Cohen had spent training camp with the Patriots and was among the last players released.  He was claimed off of waivers by Seattle and released a week later.  He then came back to Foxboro.

To take Cohen’s roster spot, the team has brought back veteran DL Gerard Warren an 11-year vet out of the University of Florida.

He spent the 2010 season with the Patriots and came back to the team at during training camp and was released prior to Week 1.  It was speculated at that time that Warren was a possible candidate to return as he is one of those guys that Bill Belichick loves.
