Red Sox News & Notes – 10/12

Sunset at Kakaako Waterfront Park - October 9, 2011

The offseason is full of rumors and speculation but this offseason has been different for the Boston Red Sox.

So far this offseason, most of the pieces coming out from the Boston media have been about the collapse of the team. We know some players were drinking beer in the clubhouse during games, some of the players were out of shape and some other things too.

Yes, I’m disappointed in what’s come out so far. But now I’m a little more perturbed about the piece in the Boston Globe that came out this morning.

I won’t divulge into the details because basically I’m wondering when the Globe became a tabloid paper. The stuff that came out of the article was probably a little too personal in nature in regards to Terry Francona. The parts about him are equivalent to the post that TMZ did on John Lackey divorcing his wife.

The other crap in the article is stuff we already knew. And like I said before, I’m disappointed.

There are people who can afford to go watch these guys on a nightly basis. Then there are the fans who don’t have the means to attend every game but would love to. No matter our circumstances, we support this team 100% and then some on a nightly basis. They’ve earned our respect.

But with everything that’s come out this offseason so far, the respect the Red Sox had earned, is gone at least on my end. It’s going to take a lot for them to earn it back too.

Before this fluff piece came out in the Globe, the biggest news of the day was the fact that it looks like boy wonder, Theo Epstein, is heading to the Chicago Cubs. Nothing is 100% done yet but according to the AP, it should be done by Thursday.

From all the media reports coming out on Theo’s situation, the hold up right now is compensation as well as the Red Sox are doing everything they can to keep him.

With Theo under contract for 2012 with the Red Sox, the Cubs are going to have give something back to the local nine. Whether that be players or money remains to be seen, but you can best bet that if the brain trust on Yawkey Way lets him go, they’ll get something good in return. If they don’t, then there’s definitely something wrong with them.

And if it comes down to players, hopefully Ben Cherington, who is doing the negotiations for the Red Sox, can send Lackey there as well.

With this whole Theo mess going on, the Red Sox managerial search is on hold. But given everything that’s coming out in regards to the collapse, the Red Sox would be served going outside the organization for their manager.

If the ownership holds true to their word and tries to turn things over to get back to the “Red Sox Way” of things, a manager who isn’t in the Red Sox system would probably be the best thing. It would have to be a disciplinarian type of manager because if it’s an easy going one, he’ll never get control of what seems to be an out-of-control clubhouse.

In The Red Zone – 10/11

In the Red Zone

The thing I enjoy most about Monday’s (or the day after the game) is that I have had a chance to digest what I saw and read.  While watching a game you’re too invested in it, you get so busy looking at some things you miss others.

That’s why Monday is a day of reflection.  And after some reflection on the well balanced effort of the Patriots on Sunday against the Jets it looks even better than I thought it did, especially defensively.

You’ll see a note in here about the New York possessions.  The Jets had the ball 11 times.  They went three and out 7 times.  That’s pretty good for a ragged, much maligned defensive unit.

They once again didn’t allow a 100-yard rusher.  In fact they didn’t even allow the opponent 100 rushing yards total.

Passing wise they were better than they have been.  On the Santonio Holmes TD catch he ran a great route and confused the coverage.  S James Ihedigbo and CB Kyle Arrington ended up looking at each other after the catch trying to figure who should have had him.  Most NFL corners and safeties are going to give that TD up, I can live with that.

Also on the TD pass Mark Sanchez threw to the rookie WR Jeremy Kerley, the pass was thrown down and away from the coverage and there was nothing S Patrick Chung could do except hope that Kerley didn’t get his hands on it.

Funny thing is those were probably the two best thrown balls all day by Sanchez, who to me, hasn’t been worthy of being a first round pick that New York invested in him three years ago.

Offensively, on first inspection I thought they were ok but on reflection you realize they had an entirely different plan than usual.  Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien decided they were going to ground the Jets to a pulp with the running game and with the help of BenJarvus Green-Ellis they did exactly that.

Sometimes with the effectiveness of Tom Brady and his receivers you forget that they still have a running game.

The Patriots still did there fair share of throwing on Sunday and the biggest one was the 74-yard hook up to Wes Welker early in the second half.  The only thing that prevented an 80-yard TD pass was some extreme hustle from Darrelle Revis.

Next week they face the Fighting Jerry Jones’s, the Dallas Cowboys, at The Razor.  Dallas is coming into town off their bye week they are 2-2 and have really struggled at times as a team and as individuals.  The Patriots usually use these teams as a whipping boy and it’d surely be nice for them to head into their bye week with a crushing victory.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

New England head coach Bill Belichick had his weekly day after media meeting about Sunday’s game.

The Patriots have not lost a regular season game at Gillette Stadium since the 2008 season having won 19 consecutive regular season home games.  It is the longest current streak in the NFL and 5th longest in NFL history.

Since 2002 when Gillette Stadium opened the Patriots are 69-14 at home.

New England is 50-15 vs. the AFC East since 2001.

On Monday morning the team released OL Thomas Welch.  Expect him to end up with the open practice squad spot that occurred when RB Eric Kettani was ordered back to duty by the Navy late last week. The Patriots re-signed tight end Dan Gronkowski to the roster spot vacated with the release of Welch.

The release of Welch bodes well in one area in that it’s more likely that T Sebastian “Sea Bass” Vollmer is ready to return to action after missing four of the first five games with a back injury.

WR Wes Welker has 740 receiving yards this season it is the most ever by a Patriot through the first five games of a season.

QB Tom Brady made his weekly appearance as part of “Patriots Monday” on Boston’s WEEI AM/FM.

Brady’s streak of throwing at least a pair of TD passes ended on Sunday.  He and Peyton Manning hold the NFL record for throwing at least 2 TD passes in 13 consecutive games.

Brady also tied former teammate Vinny Testaverde for 8th all time on the TD pass list with 275.

Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino thinks his single season total passing yards mark will fall sooner or later.  Five current QB’s, including Brady, are currently on pace to do it this season.

Connecticut native, TE Aaron Hernandez returned to action on Sunday against the Jets and he had 5 catches after missing the last two games with a sprained MCL. He also contributed by drawing two big defensive penalties against New York so I’ll forgive him for boxing that sure TD pass at the end of the 1st half that lead to the Antonio Cromartie INT.

LB Jerod Mayo missed the game with a sprained MCL and could miss up to 6 weeks, in addition to Mayo players who missed the game Sunday with injuries were Mike Wright, Julian Edelman, Danny Woodhead, Josh Barrett and Sebastian Vollmer. Ryan Mallett was a healthy scratch for the 4th time in 5 weeks.

We’ll have to see what the week brings and if the players are able to get back on the field for the Dallas game.

Patriot injuries of note from Sunday vs. New York are: WR Matthew Slater (ribs); DT Albert Haynesworth (cramping); TE Rob Gronkowski (illness).

Mass Live’s Nick Underhill writes BenJarvus Green-Ellis is flying high following the win over the New York Jets.

The offensive line had mixed results on Sunday.  While they were good in the ground game they struggled with pass defense.

The offensive line allowed the Jets to get a season high four sacks of Brady while adding an additional 5 hits, which tied the amount that San Diego had in Week 2.

UMass alum and Western Mass native S James Ihedigbo got some redemption against his old team.

ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss has his 3 Up, 3 Down for the Patriots.

It was a frustrating day for the Jets defense.

New York was balanced on offense but it wasn’t enough to beat New England.

The Jets had 11 possessions, 7 times they went 3 and out and of those 7 three and outs, three were on 3rd and 3 or less and each time the Jets tried to pass.

Haynesworth says the defense “knows we have the talent”.

And before I close I just want to offer my condolences to the Oakland Raiders staff, players and fans for the loss of owner Al Davis.  Like him, love him or hate him he was a maverick and he made a difference.

Davis did some great things in his life.  He helped the leagues merge, he hired the first Black NFL head coach, the first Hispanic NFL head coach and the first woman NFL CEO.  He was ground breaking.

His players past and present loved him.  He touched the lives of so many inside and outside of football and he had a generosity that was hidden from most.

The NFL is richer because of him at the same time it’s poorer because of his death.

New England plays the Dallas Cowboys Sunday at 4:15 p.m. at the Razor.  Look for the Sox & Dawgs “In The Red Zone Game Preview” available on Friday morning.

UConn Depth Chart for USF

South Florida Bulls @ UConn Huskies

UConn Huskies football head coach Paul Pasqualoni has released his depth chart for Saturday’s game against the South Florida Bulls and there are some changes on the defensive side of the ball from last week’s depth chart.

Ty-Meer Brown takes over for Harris Agbor as the starting safety, a move that was seen before the game last Saturday against West Virginia. And with Gary Wilburn struggling at cornerback, Connecticut native Byron Jones is now starting there until Blidi Wreh-Wilson comes back from his injury.

Also one small change on special teams as Taylor Mack is now in an “OR” situation with Deshon Foxx as the second kick returner beside Nick Williams. The offense which didn’t score a touchdown in loss against the Mountaineers remains intact.

Two Red Sox Farmhands In Top 20 International League Prospects By Baseball America

Baseball America is busy right now putting together its top 20 prospects lists by league now that the minor league baseball season is over. They got it started with the Arizona League, the Gulf Coast League, Appalachian League, Pioneer League, the Northwest LeagueNY/Penn League, the Midwest League, the South Atlantic League, California League, Carolina League, Florida State League, Eastern League, Southern League and Texas League. The Pacific Coast League top 20 was released earlier in the day on Monday.

Boston Red SoxToday we’ll take a look at where the Red Sox farmhands ranked in the top 20 of the International League where the Pawtucket Red Sox play.

The Red Sox had two farmhands in the top 20 as catcher Ryan Lavarnway (14th) and outfielder Josh Reddick (16th)

Lavarnway was a 6th round draft choice of the Red Sox out of Yale in 2008. He split his time with the Sea Dogs and PawSox before his promotion to the big club late in August.  In 55 games with the Sea Dogs, he hit .284 with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs. In 61 games with the PawSox, he hit .295 with 18 home runs, 55 RBIs and had one stolen base. In his 17 games with the Red Sox, he hit .231 with two home runs and eight RBIs. When you combine his minor league stats,  he hit .290 with 32 home runs, 93 RBIs and a stolen base.

Reddick played in 52 games with the PawSox this season. He hit .230 with 14 home runs, 36 RBIs and four stolen bases. He spent 87 games in the big leagues with the Red Sox hitting .280 with seven home runs, 28 RBIs and a stolen base. Before the 2011 season, he spent parts of the 2009 and 2010 season with the Red Sox as well. In 143 games with the Red Sox, Reddick is hitting .248 with 10 home runs, 37 RBIs and two stolen bases.

With this being the final league in which Red Sox farmhands play in, we’ll now wait until the various outlets release their top 10 Red Sox farmhands. And when they do, I’ll be sure to post them up here on the site.

Three Huskies Earns Spot on Wooden Award Preseason Top-30

Los Angeles (October 10, 2011) — Tiffany Hayes, Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley each earned a spot on the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top-30 as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Monday.  The Preseason Top-30 is comprised of 30 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early frontrunners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor. The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national college women’s basketball media members.

John R. Wooden AwardUConn and Notre Dame were the only schools to place three players on the list and the Big East led all conferences with nine selections, followed by the ACC with six, the Big 12 with four, the SEC and Big 10 with three, and the Pac-12 and CAA with two, and the Atlantic 10 with one.

Hayes, an Honorable Mention All-American last season, earned a spot on the list in 2010 as well.

Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are not eligible for the preseason list. These players and others who excel throughout the season will be evaluated and considered for December’s Midseason list and the official voting ballot released in March. The National Ballot consists of approximately 20 top players who have proven to their universities that they are also making progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.  The Wooden Award All American Team, consisting of the nation’s top 10 players, will be announced the week before the Final Four.

The 36th annual Wooden Award ceremony will honor the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award winners. It will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, and will take place the weekend of April 9-11, 2012.

About the John R. Wooden Award
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball.  It is bestowed upon the nation’s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.  Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (’79), Michael Jordan (’84), Tim Duncan (’97), Candace Parker (’07 and ’08) and Maya Moore of Connecticut (’09 and ‘11). UConn’s Maya Moore (’11) won the women’s Award in 2011.

Since its inception, the John R. Wooden Award has contributed close to a million dollars to universities’ general scholarship fund in the names of the All American recipients. The Award has also sent more than 1,000 underprivileged children to week-long college basketball camps in the Award’s name.   Additionally, the John R. Wooden Award partners with Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) each year to host the Wooden Award Special Olympics Southern California Basketball Tournament.  The day-long tournament, which brings together Special Olympic athletes and the All Americans, takes place at The Los Angeles Athletic Club the weekend of the John R. Wooden Award Ceremony.

Balanced Effort Leads Patriots Past Jets, 30-21

New England Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis runs for a gain against the New York Jets during the second half of an NFL football game in Foxborough, Mass., Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011. Green-Ellis ran for a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots beat the New York Jets 30-21.

In what may have been the most complete game of the season the New England Patriots never trailed and were carried by an undrafted running back to a 30-21 win over their division rival New York Jets at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on Sunday afternoon.

The much-maligned defense is still far from great but it did look improved and did enough to hold off a so-so offensive effort by the Jets.  The biggest stat of the day was that the Patriots held New York to 3 for 14 on 3rd down conversions, one of the sorry spots for the teams defensive unit this season.

New York only had 255 total yards on 97 rushing and 158 passing without turning over the ball once.  It was the first game this year that New England failed to get a takeaway.

New York QB Mark Sanchez was sporadic in his play and largely ineffective against the leagues worst rated pass defense and if you’re a Jets fan you have to start wondering two and half years into the Sanchize-era if it’s truly the correct way to go.

One week after throwing for only 115 yards vs. Baltimore he was 16 of 26 for 166 with 2 TD’s, 0 INTs and 2 sacks against what the rest of the league has made look like a prep school defense.

Rushing wise the Patriots held Jets RB Shonn Green to 83 yards on 21 carries he also added a TD.

Meanwhile the Patriots offense was leaving points on the field.  Three times they had drives stalled and needed a trio of field goals by Stephen Gostkowski.  He connected from 44 yards early in the second quarter, from 24 yards out early in the 4th and with a minute left he sealed the game with a 28 yarder.

New England QB Tom Brady also got picked in the red zone in the final seconds of the first half as New York CB Antonio Cromartie got his hands on a ball that was boxed by Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez in the end zone.

Brady finished the day 24 of 33 for 321 yards with 1 TD, 1 INT and he was sacked a season high 4 times as most of the sack pressure came from out on the edges by mostly unblocked Jets defensive backs.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis was the offensive star for the Patriots on this day as he had 136 yards on 27 rushes and scored on a pair of 3-yard rushing TD’s.  WR Deion Branch had 7 catches for 74 yards and a TD, while WR Wes Welker and Hernandez each made 5 grabs.

The Patriots entertain the Cowboys next Sunday at Gillette Stadium game time is 4:15 p.m.
