Bobby Valentine Adds Randy Niemann To His Staff

It looks as though new Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine has reached out to an old friend to join his coaching staff.

Boston Red SoxAccording to MLB.com and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, Valentine has hired Randy Niemann to be the assistant pitching coach/coaching assistant. Niemann was the New York Mets pitching rehabilitation coordinator in 2011.

Niemann has spent 24 years with the Mets organization and was part of Valentine’s staff from 1997 to 1999 when Bobby V was the skipper there.

Could Hiroki Kuroda Be Coming To Beantown?

This is a multiple exposure image of Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, of Japan, throws to the plate during the fourth inning of their baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, in Los Angeles.

While the Boston Red Sox have been adding some low cost pitching depth over the past few days, is it possible that former Los Angeles Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda is coming to the Beantown? If we are to believe Jim Bowden of ESPN, the answer is yes.

On Bowden’s ESPN Insider blog, he reports that the Red Sox are closing in on a short-term deal with Kuroda. Just yesterday, Kuroda announced he would be staying in the United States for the 2012 season and not returning to his native Japan.

Here’s what Bowden had to say:

The Boston Red Sox appear to be closing in on a short-term deal with right-hander Hiroki Kuroda to add him to a rotation that already has Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard. This move, along with the trades for relievers Mark Melancon and Andrew Bailey, quickly puts the Red Sox back among the AL’s elite. Kuroda is extremely underrated for the valuable innings he can provide from the back of a rotation.

However, if we are to believe Alex Speier of WEEI.com, the Red Sox are not close to a deal with Kuroda.

According to a major league source, a report from ESPN’s Jim Bowden suggesting that the Red Sox are “closing in on a short-term deal” with free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda is inaccurate, with another source suggesting that such a claim was “baseless.”

The Red Sox did try to acquire Kuroda from the Dodgers last year at the trade deadline but Kuroda decided not to exercise his no-trade clause and stayed in the mess that Frank McCourt created with the team.

Kuroda went 13-16 with a 3.07 ERA for the Dodgers in 32 starts last season. He did go over the 200 innings mark (202) which is something the Red Sox didn’t get from any of there starters.

Given that Kuroda is seeking a short-term deal, he could fit into the Red Sox plans. Of course that is going to depend on how much money he wants for a one-year deal. But with the New York Yankees and other teams out there still needing starting pitching, it’s quite possible his short-term asking price could be too high for the wallets of the Red Sox ownership group.

This will definitely be something to keep an eye on though over the coming days.

Red Sox Add More Depth With Justin Germano

Cleveland Indians relief pitcher Justin Germano and catcher Carlos Santana celebrate the Indians tenth inning win over the Kansas City Royals in their MLB American League baseball game in Kansas City, Missouri, April 18, 2011.

New Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington continues to add low cost pitching depth just a day after adding Aaron Cook to mix.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox have signed right hander Justin Germano to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.. Heyman stated that Germano turned down more money in Korea where he finished the 2011 season.

Germano actually started the 2011 season with the Cleveland Indians where he was 0-1 with a 5.68 in nine appearances. He was with Triple-A Columbus but then he headed to Korea to play for the Samsung Lions when the Indians sold his contract to them.

Germano threw a perfect game for the Columbus Clippers while he was there on July 26, 2011 against the Syracuse Chiefs.

In parts of six seasons in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds and Indians, Germano is 8-20 with a 5.02 ERA in 79 appearances (36 starts). He spent the 2009 season in Japan with the Fukuoka Hawks where he was 5-4 with a 4.38 ERA in 14 games.

My guess is that Germano, if he decides to stay stateside, will start the 2012 season in Triple-A with the Pawtucket Red Sox.

In The Red Zone – 1/10

In The Red Zone

Well the New England Patriots come off their playoff bye week that they earned as the AFC’s top seed and they get to see a familiar foe come to Foxboro.  It’s a rematch of Week 15, as they will face the Denver Broncos, this time in the friendly confines of Gillette Stadium.

This means that Tebow-mania is coming to town after Denver’s second year quarterback Tim Tebow helped lead the Broncos to a 29-23 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Tebow didn’t throw a lot but when he did he was an effective 10 for 21 for 316 yards and 2 TD passes and it seemed like all ten of his completions were for big gains.  Pittsburgh decided to play the run all day and let Tebow get his throws and it ended up sending the Steelers home for the season.

The last time these two teams met a month ago, Denver’s defense had no answer for New England’s tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski.  While Gronk was slowed down, Hernandez stepped up and took up the slack.

This time around Denver comes to “The Razor” as a 13-point underdog just one day after their big win.  I’m not a big fan of huge point spreads (10+ points) as in most cases they aren’t covered but some are saying there are huge signs that this could be a blow out of epic proportions.

I’m just not sure I’m willing to go there with Tebow on the other sideline.  He’s been playing very smart and he did a lot of things against the Steelers that he hadn’t done this season and he looked good.  It will not doubt strengthen his confidence moving forward.

The other reason is the Patriots pass defense.  All season teams have shredded them between the numbers and that’s area were Tebow operated a lot on Sunday making the Steelers secondary, the top pass defense in the NFL, look foolish.  So what will that mean for New England’s pass defense?

The other concern I have, albeit a smaller one, is in Denver the Broncos ran all over the Patriots in the first quarter racking up 166 yards on the ground in 15 minutes.  Luckily defensive coach Matt Patricia threw out the game plan and reworked it on the sideline and the changes slowed down the Broncos rushing express and also created three turnovers.

The one thing I am not worried about is the offense, which I think will put up at least 30 points on Denver.  The questions is what will the defense give up?

I guess we’ll need to watch Saturday night and find out.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

New England head coach Bill Belichick now has 190 career wins including playoffs, which are good for 9th all-time. Former Los Angeles Rams, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks head coach Chuck Knox is 8th with 193 wins.

Here’s the transcript to Belichick’s weekly day after the game media conference call.

Defensive coach Matt Patricia and Director of Player Development Nick Caserio did conference calls as well.

Caserio turned down the chance to interview for the Colts general managers job.

Josh McDaniels officially started with the Patriots on Sunday and not much was let out about how he will be used during the game.  He was the St. Louis offensive coordinator this season but the Rams let him out of his contract last week.

Kansas City hired former New England defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel as their head coach.  Crennel had been the Chiefs defensive coordinator the last two years before being named interim coach after Todd Haley was fired in December.

The remaining AFC Playoff Seeds are as follows:

  1. New England
  2. Baltimore
  3. Houston
  4. Denver

In addition to Denver at New England, Houston will travel to Baltimore looking for a place in the AFC Championship game a week from Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

The remaining NFC Playoff Seeds are as follows:

  1. Green Bay
  2. San Francisco
  3. New Orleans
  4. New York Giants

New York is in Green Bay and San Francisco hosts New Orleans as the teams look for a spot in the NFC Championship game a week from Sunday at 7 p.m.

The Patriots were 1-2 against playoff teams in 2011 beating Denver and losing to the New York Giants and Pittsburgh.

Awful Announcing has your full NFL Playoffs Announcing Schedule.

The Patriots were 7-1 at The Razor, 6-2 on the road, 5-1 against the AFC East, 0-1 against the AFC North, 1-0 against the AFC South and 4-0 against the AFC West for a 10-2 record vs. the AFC.  They finished 3-1 against the NFC East.

New England has won 8 consecutive games after a 2 game losing streak.  It is their longest win streak of the season.

Since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, New England is 74-15 at home including the playoffs it is the best record in the NFL in that time period.

The Patriots have lost their last three playoff games.  Two at Gillette Stadium (Baltimore and New York Jets) and Super Bowl XLII (New York Giants).  Their last post season win was the 2007 AFC Championship game played in Foxboro when they beat San Diego to go to 18-0.

WR Wes Welker now has catches in 98 consecutive games including playoffs, 81 as a Patriot.  The last time Welker did not have a catch in a game was 12/24/05 as a Dolphin.

The Boston Globe’s Bob Hohler on his Gronkness.

The New England defense sacked the opponents quarterback 40 times in the 16 game season.

New England finished PLUS 17 in turnover differential. The offense gave up 12 INTs and 5 fumbles, while the defense had 23 INTs and 11 fumble recoveries.

In 15 of the 16 games this season the Patriots opened on defense.  They won 7 of 16 coin flips and elected to defer each time.  Opponents won the coin toss 9 of 16 times and 8 times elected to receive.

The lone game the Patriots opened on offense was Week 3 in Buffalo, a game they lost.

The Broncos are looking forward to the rematch saying they can’t let New England score 40 points again.

The Patriots will face the Denver Broncos on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Gillette Stadium.  Look for the Sox & Dawgs “In The Red Zone Game Preview” available on the Friday before the game.

Lyle McCombs Named To FWAA Freshman All-America Team

Connecticut's Lyle McCombs is pursued by Fordham's Justin Yancey (72) and Jake Rodriques (45) while making a 60-yard run during the first half of an NCAA college football game in East Hartford, Conn. , on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011.

Here’s the press release from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) that names UConn Huskies redshirt freshman running back Lyle McCombs to the 2011 FWAA Freshman All-America Team.

NEW ORLEANS (FWAA) – The 11th annual Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team has been announced, with all six Bowl Championship Series conferences and Notre Dame well represented on the 26-man roster. A total of 23 players came from the Pac-12, SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, ACC and Big East conferences and the independent Fighting Irish.

Southern California and Kansas State were the only schools with two players on the team. Two of the special teams selections hail from Australia.

West Virginia’s first-year coach Dana Holgorsen claimed the first-year coaching honors after his Mountaineers won the Big East Conference championship and finished with a 10-3 record after routing Clemson, 70-33, in the Discover Orange Bowl.

The team and coach are selected by an 11-person panel of nationally-prominent writers led by Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News Sentinel. Both true freshmen (14 players) and redshirt freshmen (12 players) were considered for the team and are so noted.
