Connecticut Whale 4, Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3 (OT)

By Brian Ring

Hartford, CT, April 22, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-3, in overtime Sunday night at the XL Center to sweep their first-round playoff series, three games to none.

CT WhaleMarek Hrivik had two goals for the Whale and Casey Wellman tallied the overtime game-winner to give Connecticut their first postseason series win since 2006.

“Everybody is contributing and pulling their weight and that’s what it takes and that’s why it’s been such a good feeling tonight,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander.

The Whale took the first lead of the game on Hrivik’s third goal in the last two games, as he scored at the 6:11 mark of the first period on the power-play. Hrivik took a pass from Wellman, skating in at the bottom of the circle before firing a shot through Sound Tigers’ goaltender Kevin Poulin (50 saves). Mike Vernace picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

The Sound Tigers would end Cam Talbot’s (44 saves) playoff shutout streak at 139 minutes and 44 seconds, as Justin DiBenedetto tied the game on the power-play with 16 seconds remaining in the first period. David Ullstrom slid the puck across the top of the crease to the open DiBenedetto, who tallied the first playoff goal for Bridgeport. Calvin de Haan also assisted on the goal.

Neither team would be able to push anything across in the second period, as Talbot and Poulin dueled throughout the frame. The Whale outshot the Sound Tigers, 22-10, in the second, with Poulin making an exceptional save on Kris Newbury to keep the game tied at one.

Talbot also contributed a quality save on Kael Mouillierat, who broke in on the Whale goaltender alone on a shorthanded breakaway.

The third period would prove to be a change of pace from the quiet second frame.

Ryan Bourque would strike for the Whale 5:32 into the third period, converting on a model give-and-go with Kelsey Tessier in front of Poulin. Tessier drew the attention of Poulin and fed Bourque at the last moment, allowing the Bridgeport goaltender no chance to make a stop. Andreas Thuresson collected the secondary assist on the play.

David Ullstrom would tie the game for Bridgeport with 9:28 left in the third, burying a rebound chance over the left pad of Talbot. DiBenedetto and Matt Donovan notched the assists on the equalizer.

Hrivik would strike again with his second goal of the night and fourth of the series just 46 seconds later, blasting a slapshot past Poulin to put the Whale up 3-2. Hrivik came in on a two-on-one with Andre Deveaux, but opted for the shot, which beat Poulin to his glove side.

“There’s still lots of work ahead of me,” said Hrivik. “I couldn’t find a passing lane through [Wellman] so I just shot it and it just went in.”

“It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m thankful for this.”

The back-and-forth struggle would continue, as Rhett Rakhshani tallied his first goal of the playoffs with 3:21 remaining to tie the game at four and send Game Three into overtime.

Tony Romano would break the stick of Whale defenseman Wade Redden 14:40 into the extra session, setting up a key power-play chance for Connecticut.

With just five seconds left in the man-advantage, Redden fed Wellman coming in at the far post in front of Poulin, who fired the winning shot over the Sound Tigers goaltender for the series clinching tally. Thuresson netted his second assist of the game on the play.

The Whale will now await their opponent for the Eastern Conference Semi-finals series, dates and times to be announced.

Lars Anderson Called Up; Repko To The DL

Catcher Matt Wieters #32 of the Baltimore Orioles takes the throw as infielder Lars Anderson #62 of the Boston Red Sox slides in safely during a Grapefruit League Spring Training Game at Ed Smith Stadium on March 11, 2012 in Sarasota, Florida.

When the Boston Red Sox signed Adrian Gonzalez, the future for Lars Anderson as the first baseman in Boston pretty much went by the wayside.

He spent all of last year toiling in Triple-A with the Pawtucket Red Sox and was almost traded to the Oakland A’s at the trade deadline for Rich Harden. Unfortunately for him, that trade fell through and he was still a man without a home in the big leagues.

The Red Sox had Anderson play some outfield during spring training and he’s seen time there with the PawSox this season. And now his versatility has paid off, at least for now.

With Jason Repko crashing into the wall on Friday afternoon and an eventual diagnosis of a separated shoulder, the Red Sox were left shorthanded in the outfield on Saturday. And even with the acquisition of Marlon Byrd, the Red Sox felt they needed another outfielder.

So with the game being postponed on Sunday night, the Red Sox have decided to put Repko on the disabled list and call up Anderson from Triple-A.

In 15 games with the PawSox this season, Anderson is hitting .255 with one home run and eight RBIs. Of those 15 games played, he saw action in eight of them in the outfield handling all six balls hit his way.

Anderson has appeared in 24 games for the Red Sox in two September callups the past two season and is hitting .175 with four RBIs. Most of his action last year came as a defensive replacement.

Tonight’s Red Sox vs Yankees Game Rained Out

With all of the rain here in New England, tonight’s game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees at Historic Fenway Park is rained out.

Boston Red SoxDaniel Bard will be skipped in the rotation until his next turn and is available to pitch out of the bullpen.

Here’s the release from the Red Sox about the cancellation of tonight’s game:

Boston, MA – Tonight’s Red Sox-Yankees game has been postponed due to inclement weather.

According to the Red Sox professional weather service, Telvent DTN, the current forecast calls for the rain showers that are currently in the area to increase in intensity throughout the afternoon and evening hours, and remain steady into Monday afternoon. This forecast, which also includes high winds and cold temperatures, is consistent with those provided by the other local weather services. A flood watch is in effect for Boston and Suffolk County through noon on Monday, April 23.

The decision to postpone tonight’s game was made as early as possible in hopes of limiting the inconvenience to fans holding tickets to this evening’s 8:05 p.m. contest.

Tonight’s game will be rescheduled for a date to be determined as soon as possible. Tickets for tonight’s game will be good for admission to that rescheduled contest.

Red Sox News & Notes – 4/22

NY Post and NY Daily News sports covers for Sunday, April 22

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said after yesterday’s 15-9 loss to the New York Yankees that the team had hit rock bottom. Ya think Bobby?

Your team had a 9-0 lead and you took your starter Felix Doubront before the start of the 7th inning with a 9-1 lead. You went to your bullpen which has struggled at times this season and after the 7th, your team was winning by one run. Then your closer Alfredo Aceves throws 30 pitches without recording an out and by the end of the 8th inning, your team was losing 15-9.

If that’s not rock bottom then I don’t know what is.

Doubront put himself on the map during spring training with his performance against the Yankees in March. He continued that throughout the spring and earned the No. 4 job. Yesterday afternoon, he threw his best start of the young season and deserved a better fate than a no decision.

Now I understand that the Red Sox were up 9-1 but Doubront was only at 99 pitches. Why not put him back out there to start the 7th. He wasn’t showing any signs of laboring at all. And at worst case, you could take him out if he started to struggle. After all, you left Daniel Bard out there in his last start at over 100 pitches and everyone in the world could see that he was fatigued.

But we can’t put the blame solely on Valentine for yesterday’s loss. He’s doing the best he can with what he was given. And in the bullpen that’s not too much. Right now, other than the recent callup, Junichi Tazawa, there’s not one single person down in the bullpen that he can trust.

The Red Sox ownership group along with GM Ben Cherington held a closed door meeting with Valentine after the game. Part of it was to discuss the Marlon Byrd trade but it also was about that they were behind Valentine. Plus they also talked about Bard staying in the rotation.

If the weather doesn’t cooperate tonight and Bard gets scratched, the Red Sox will have a decision to make. Do they push Bard to Monday or do they skip his turn? If they do skip his turn, do they let him pitch out of the bullpen once this week? Or do they put Bard back in the bullpen to plug a tiny part of the Fenway Park sized hole there and call up Aaron Cook who has pitched well in Triple-A?

Personally, I think the Red Sox need to put Bard back in the bullpen. Sure the starting pitching hasn’t been what was expected. But I’m pretty sure no one thought the bullpen would be as bad it is. Yes, the Andrew Bailey injury has made a huge difference, but if the bullpen continues to put up stink bombs, the Red Sox will just continue to be a mediocre team.

We haven’t even gotten to the offense yet, it’s been all about the pitching. The Red Sox offense did its job yesterday.

They got Yankees starter Freddy Garcia out of the game after 1.2 innings. They got to a Yankees bullpen which hadn’t given up a run in 14 innings. They got the results they needed for the win as they backed up Doubront’s solid start.

Unfortunately, the bullpen didn’t back them up.

One other thing, sure the Red Sox ownership group and Cherington gave valentine a collective we’re behind you. Usually that means, you’re on the hot seat and if things don’t turn around soon, a change needs to be made.

Personally, I don’t think that Valentine getting canned or him resigning makes this team any better. They need a huge shake up.

Will Middlebrooks is tearing up Triple-A right now. Sure it’s a small sample size but it’s going to be hard to keep him down there with the PawSox if he continues at that pace. Maybe a big trade is really what this team needs to do to shake things up. They could use Kevin Youkilis to get a reliever that might help things out a little.

Just throwing that out there. Don’t hate!

Roscoe Smith Leaves Sinking U.S.S. UConn

An exasperated Jim Calhoun looks at Roscoe Smith during the first half of a 77-64 loss to Iowa State Thursday, March 15, 2012, to end their season in the second round of the NCAA tournament at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912. 100 years later, the U.S.S. UConn continues to take on water and may sink before all is said done.

With Jeremy Lamb and Andre Drummond off to get paid in the NBA as well as the departures of Alex Oriakhi and Michael Bradley, the UConn Huskies men’s basketball program couldn’t really afford to lose another player. Unfortunately that is happening to them again.

Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com was the first to report on Saturday that UConn sophomore small/power forward Roscoe Smith asked for and received his release from the school. Wherever Smith decides to go to school, he will have to sit out next year due to the NCAA transfer rules.

After spending most of the 2010-11 season that saw the Huskies win the 2011 NCAA Championship as a starter, Smith saw his playing time decrease this year. In 18.3 minutes of action, he averaged 4.4 points and 3.3 rebounds.

He did come on at the end of the season though and was a big reason why the Huskies were able to make the late season run into the NCAA Tournament.

Whether or not the Huskies are eligble for the postseason next year, they are in trouble. They will have only eight players plus walk-ons unless they can get someone to give them a late commitment. It’s also quite possible that Bradley returns to the school.

While it’s still too early tell, no matter what happens, it’s looking more and more like it’s going to be a long 2012-2013 season for the Huskies.

Red Sox Acquire Marlon Byrd From Cubs

Chicago Cubs center fielder Marlon Byrd chases a triple hit by Cincinnati Reds' Todd Frazler during the ninth inning of a baseball game in Chicago, Friday, April 20, 2012.

Don’t worry folks, Marlon Byrd and his .070 batting average is coming to save the Boston Red Sox.

With Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury on the disabled list and Jason Repko out with a shoulder injury after crashing into the wall on Friday, the Red Sox are a little shorthanded in the outfield. So with limited options available to them, the Red Sox reached out to old friend Theo Epstein with the Chicago Cubs to get some outfield help.

The Red Sox acquired Byrd and cash considerations from the Cubs for reliever Michael Bowden and player to be named later. Bowden was designated for assignement by the Red Sox earlier in the week.

To make room on the 25-man and 40-man rosters, the Red Sox designated Nate Spears for assignment.

Here’s the full release from the Red Sox with all the details you need to know:

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired outfielder Marlon Byrd and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden and a player to be named later.  To make room for Byrd on the 40-man roster, the club designated infielder/outfielder Nate Spears for assignment.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Byrd, 34, owns a .278 career average (1,040-for-3,735) with 215 doubles, 27 triples, 81 home runs, 438 RBI, 516 runs, 274 walks and 49 stolen bases in 1,069 Major League games over 11 seasons with the Phillies (2002-05), Nationals (2005-06), Rangers (2007-09) and Cubs (2010-12).  A 2010 All-Star, he has appeared at all three outfield positions with 810 games in center, 142 in left and 109 in right.  He has started in center field in all 13 of his games with Chicago this season and reached base safely in six of those contests, going 3-for-43 with two RBI, three walks and a run scored.  Originally selected by Philadelphia in the 10th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Byrd has hit at a .287 clip (698-for-2,433) in 661 games since the start of the 2007 campaign.

Bowden, 25, was designated for assignment by Boston on April 15 after posting a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3.0 IP) in two relief appearances with the club this season.  Selected by the Red Sox in the supplemental round (47th overall) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, the right-hander has made 39 career Major League appearances (two starts) over the last five seasons since 2008, going 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA (37 ER/59.1 IP) and 48 strikeouts compared to 23 walks.

Spears, 26, has appeared in four games with the Red Sox since being selected to the Major League roster on April 15 and gone 0-for-4.  He played in eight games with Triple-A Pawtucket to begin the season, going 6-for-26 (.231) with two RBI, five runs and three walks.  Spears made his Major League debut with Boston last September, appearing in three games with the club.  Originally selected by Baltimore in the fifth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .272 (900-for-3,305) with 171 doubles, 43 triples, 55 home runs, 377 RBI, 536 runs, 427 walks and 85 stolen bases in 966 minor league games in the Orioles, Cubs and Red Sox organizations.

Connecticut Whale 3, Bridgeport Sound Tigers 0

By Brian Ring

Bridgeport, CT, April 21, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-0, Saturday night in the second game of their best-of-five Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series at the Webster Bank Arena.

CT WhaleThe Whale bumped their lead to two games to none over Bridgeport, who face elimination in Game Three slated for Sunday in Hartford (5:00 PM).

Cam Talbot was excellent in goal for the second straight game, becoming the first goaltender in franchise history to notch back-to-back shutouts in the postseason with a 41-save performance. Talbot has stopped 83 straight shots to begin the playoffs, and is the first AHL goaltender to begin a playoff season with back-to-back shutouts since Michael Leighton, then of the Norfolk Admirals in 2004.

Marek Hrivik scored his first two postseason goals of his pro career for the Whale, and Casey Wellman added two assists to lead the Connecticut attack.

“For the most part we’ve been very patient and eliminated those unforced errors,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “We make them earn it. We did a good job eliminating second and third opportunities and Cam did a good job on the initial saves.”

The Whale turned the momentum of the game right away, killing off an early five-on-three Bridgeport power-play just minutes into the first period. The penalty kill, combined with the play of Talbot, helped to stifle the Sound Tigers, who were held without a goal in five man-advantage attempts on the night.

Jonathan Audy-Marchessault put the Whale up 1-0 just 5:32 into the first period, as he picked off a pass from Sound Tigers defenseman Jon Landry. Audy-Marchessault skated in and shot on goaltender Kevin Poulin (27 saves), who made the initial save, but could not stop the rookie forward’s rebound attempt. Audy-Marchessault’s first goal of his pro playoff career came unassisted.

Talbot continued his strong play in goal, building on Thursday’s 42-save shutout in Game One with 13 first period saves, to remain perfect through four periods of play.

Hrivik would extend the lead to 2-0 6:44 into the second period, converting a pass from Wellman in the slot.

The Sound Tigers outshot the Whale, 28-20, through two periods, but Talbot continued to dazzle Bridgeport with 70 straight saves through five periods in the series.

Hrivik buried his second goal of the night with 5:45 left in the game on the power-play, skating in on Poulin down the left-hand boards and firing a shot over his stick side. Wellman picked up his second assist of the game on the goal.

Talbot would hold the lead the rest of the way, continuing to stone the Sound Tigers.

“I’m just trying to give us a chance to win every night and the guys are coming through with some big goals,” said Talbot. “The biggest thing is we’re getting balanced scoring from every single line.”

The Whale and Sound Tigers will resume their playoff series Sunday night at the XL Center for Game Three, with Bridgeport on the brink of elimination (5:00).  Tickets for Sunday’s game are available at the Public Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, through TicketMaster Charge-by-phone at 800-745-3000, and on line at www.ctwhale.com.  Upper-level tickets for first-round home games are only $5 each.
