Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 6/25

Henderson Alvarez (L), Felix Doubront (R)

After taking two-of-three from the Atlanta Braves over the weekend, the Boston Red Sox will finish up their nine-game homestand tonight. They’ll begin with the first of a three-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Blue Jays television market, you can catch the game on Rogers SportsNet or TVA Sports (French language).  If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Felix Doubront toes the rubber for the 15th time this season as he looks to keep the Red Sox from going back into the basement of the AL East. In his previous 14 starts, Doubront is 8-3 with a 4.31 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Blue Jays this season and is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA (4 ER/11.1 IP). Overall in his career, he’s made seven appearances (two starts) and is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA. Three of those appearances have come at the Fens where he has no record and a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/3.1 IP).

Henderson Alvarez is also making his 15th start of the 2012 season. In his previous 14 starts, Alvarez is 3-6 with a 4.30 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this season and is 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA (5 ER/12.1 IP). Overall in his career, he’s made three starts against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA (5 ER/18.1 IP). Tonight marks his first career start at the Fens.

Red Sox News & Notes – 6/25

Boston Red Sox's Kevin Youkilis (20) raises his arms to the crowd as he comes off the field after hitting a triple and being replaced with a pinch-runner in the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves in Boston, Sunday, June 24, 2012.

On a day where Cody Ross hit two home runs to help the Boston Red Sox to a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, you would think that was the biggest story of the day. Or that Aaron Cook had a serviceable outing and the bullpen picked him up with four solid innings.

Nope, the big story of the day was the fact it was the last game that Kevin Youkilis played in a Red Sox uniform.

With his playing time limited due to the emergence of Will Middlebrooks and the outfield getting healthy again, something had to be done by the front office. While we had all thought something was going to happen, I don’t think any of us wanted to believe it.

Youk’s been a mainstay in the Red Sox lineup since 2006 but spent 2004 and 2005 with the Red Sox as well. While he didn’t play in the 2004 World Series, he did play in the ALDS that year. When the Red Sox acquired Mike Lowell before the 2006 season, Youk moved from third base to first. In his second year at first base, he won the Gold Glove while helping the Red Sox to their second World Series title just three seasons after winning their first in 2004.

He made the All-Star team three times during his tenure in Boston, 2008, 2009 and last year in 2011.

But with his declining health and Middlebrooks coming along a year earlier than most projected, Youk’s time was up in a Red Sox uniform. When this weekend series with the Braves started, it wasn’t if he was going to be traded, it was when would he be.

Sensing it might be the last time Youk played for the Red Sox, the Fenway Park faithful rewarded his years of service and hard work with a standing ovation in his first plate appearance in the 2nd inning. He would end up reaching on an infield single off the leg of Braves starter Mike Minor.

His final at-bat in a Red Sox uniform probably won’t be remembered entirely for hitting an RBI triple. It will be remembered for the ovation he received from that same faithful crowd who had chanted “YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUK” nine seasons.

He was greeted by his teammates who each took a turn hugging him. And the antagonist of this situation, the man who didn’t play him for the past three games before yesterday, Bobby Valentine, was the one who prodded him to come back out of the dugout for a curtain call.

It was a classy move by Valentine, a baseball man who gets how people felt about Youk here in Red Sox Nation.

It’s hard to say good bye to someone who has meant so much to this group of fans. What do you say?

The only thing I can think of is, thanks Youk for everything you have done. You were a class act the whole way and played the game the way it was meant to be played. And that’s hard and with integrity.

It’s going to be weird seeing him play for another team. It’ll be even stranger seeing him play at Fenway Park in another uniform. But the topper of it all is the fact that we won’t have to wait until next season for that to happen.

That moment will come when the Red Sox return from the All-Star break to host the Chicago White Sox, Youk’s new team, for four games. You can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll be hearing “YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUK” chants all night long.

And if I were you, I’d have a tissue handy for the first time he comes to the plate during the series. Because you know it’s going to be a special moment.

So I’ll leave with you this.

It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later Youk. We’ll miss you and be easy on us when we play you. But we wish you the best of luck with the White Sox.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox Send Youk To South Side of Windy City

Kevin Youkilis #20 of the Boston Red Sox waves to the crowd after being taken out of the game during the seventh inning of the interleague game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park on June 24, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The writing was on the wall when Bobby Valentine removed Kevin Youkilis in the 7th inning from Sunday’s Boston Red Sox win over the Atlanta Braves. As he was taken out of the game, he received his second standing ovation of the game from the Fenway Park faithful and also from his teammates.

And while we all knew what was coming, we were hoping that Youk hadn’t been traded.

But Valentine had gotten word from GM Ben Cherington that a deal was almost done, hence why Youk was taken out. Rumors began to circulate on Twitter as to the destination and the return that Youk would bring. Those rumors quickly became fact that Youk was heading to the South Side of the Windy City.

After the Chicago White Sox finished their game, both teams announced the trade of Kevin Youkilis and cash considerations to the White Sox. In return, the Red Sox would get pitcher Zach Stewart and utility infielder Brent Lillibridge.

The Red Sox will pay all but $2 million of Youk’s salary which amounts to about $5.5 million. The Cincinnati native is in the final year of his contract that has a $1 million buyout if his $13 million team option is not exercised.

Obviously with Youk being traded, he was removed from the 40-man roster. The Red Sox also announced that Oscar Tejada, who is playing for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, had been designated for assignment to clear room on the 40-man for both.

Stewart will report to the Triple-A PawSox while Lillibridge head to Boston and hopefully be on the bench for tomorrow night’s matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Stewart was just sent to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday night and had yet to appear in a game for the Knights. He had made 18 appearances (one start) for the Chisox and was 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA before his demotion. In his short big league career, Stewart is 3-8 with a 5.92 ERA in 31 appearances (12 starts) with the White Sox and Toronto.

He will be under the Red Sox control until 2018 and will first become arbitration-eligible in 2015.

Lillibridge has played in 48 games for the White Sox this year and is hitting .175 with no home runs, two RBIs and seven stolen bases. Overall in his big league career, Lillibridge is a .215 hitter with 16 home runs, 58 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. He’ll be arbitration-eligible for the first time in his career after this season.

There are no words to explain what we are all feeling right now. One thing’s for certain. Youk will be missed here. Red Sox Nation will get a chance to see him again this season though as the White Sox come to Boston after the All-Star break from July 16-19. You can bet there will be plenty of “YOUUUUUUUUUUUUK” chants that night.

With Youk being traded, the only member of the 2004 World Series team that remains is David Ortiz.

Video: The Final Day of Youk In a Red Sox Uniform

If this was the final day for Kevin Youkilis in a Boston Red Sox uniform, and it appears to be the case, the Fenway Faithful made sure to give Youk the ovation that was most definitely deserved in his first at-bat.

Youk got one final at-bat in the 7th inning and tripled in a run. After dusting himself off, he was taken out of the game and given yet another ovation by the fans and this time his teammates. He was then prodded by Bobby Valentine to come out for one last curtain call.

Sunday Red Sox Delight – 6/24

Will Middlebrooks #64 of the Boston Red Sox is congratulated by Adrian Gonzalez #28 after they defeated the Atlanta Braves in an interleague game at Fenway Park on June 23, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Given everything that’s happening around the Boston Red Sox right now, you’d think they were about 10 games under .500. That’s simply not the case.

After last night’s 8-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, the Red Sox are still a last place team but are three games above .500 at 37-34. And as I said the other day, it’s still too early to talk about the wild card but they are two games out of the final wild card spot in the AL.

The problem is the distractions surrounding the rumors about Kevin Youkilis and the possible trade from the Red Sox. As you look at the rumors from yesterday and this morning, it’s not a matter of if he’ll be traded, but when. That’s half the problem. The other is the communication between Bobby Valentine and Youk.

Before yesterday’s game, Youk said he hadn’t been told about why he’s not playing. Valentine said the opposite. I think we all know why Youk’s not playing.

It’s the hot bat of Will Middlebrooks who now appears to be the every day third baseman for the Red Sox. And obviously with no room for Youk, he needs to be moved.

Look, it’s going to be a sad day when Youkilis gets traded. He’s been an integral part of this team since the 2004 season and a part of the every day lineup since 2006. As much as he means to this team on the field, he means just as much to the city of Boston off the field.

Youk has been pretty much a class act, in my opinion, in handling this. He’s been a mentor to WMB and hasn’t stopped that. He always seems to be the first one to congratulate Middlebrooks when he gets back to the dugout. You really couldn’t ask any more from him in regards to that.

It seems like that’s happening a lot lately too.

Middlebrooks was a big reason why the RedSox won last night as he went 3-for-4, finishing a triple short of the cycle.

He doubled in the 1st inning to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. His home run in the 3rd inning made it 5-1. He’s now hitting .331 and slugging at .592 which would lead the team if he qualified based on plate appearances. Nonetheless, he’s been outstanding all around.

Teams adjusted to him after his callup and hot start but he made the adjustments and is back to raking at the plate. Now that’ll he’ll be playing every day, we’ll see what happens.

Franklin Morales got off to a slow start in the game but then turned things around and was pretty much lights out. While he did allow three runs in six innings, he mowed down eight batters last night. In his two starts, he’s now struck out 17. Bobby V said after the game that Morales will make another start.

This is interesting since when the next Morales comes up in the rotation, Josh Beckett will return from the disabled list. But given how Morales is pitching while a starter, how can you not give him another shot.

Click on the read more button below to see today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the overnight and day if you’re on the home page.

Mike Minor (L), Aaron Cook (R)

After winning 8-4 last night, the Boston Red Sox look to take the series this afternoon as they finish off interleague play with the finale of a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Braves television market, you can catch the game on Fox Sports South. If you don’t live in either market, you’re in luck as TBS will have coverage of the game as well (not in Red Sox or Braves television markets). If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Aaron Cook returns to the Red Sox after spending time on the disabled list to make his second start of 2012. In his only start before going on the DL, Cook took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) in 2.2 innings of work. He made one start against the Braves in 2011 as a member of the Colorado Rockies and took the loss after allowing seven runs in five innings of work. Overall in his career, he’s made 12 appearances (10 starts) against the Braves and is 1-2 with a 5.18 ERA.

Mike Minor makes his 14th start of 2012 for the Braves. In his previous 13 starts, Minor is 3-5 with a 6.04 ERA. Today marks his first career start against the Red Sox and obviously at the Fens as well.

Here are today’s lineups:

Atlanta Braves38-33 Boston Red Sox37-34

2. Martin Prado LF 2. Dustin Pedroia 2B
3. Brian McCann C 3. Will Middlebrooks DH
