Video: Mike Olt Delivers Walkoff Single On Sunday

I’d be remissed if I didn’t get a chance to mention this but Branford, CT native and former UConn Huskies baseball player Mike Olt picked up another first in his brief MLB career.

After singling in his first career at-bat, Olt delivered his first walkoff hit for the Texas Rangers on Sunday as his single helped his team to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.

You can also catch Olt talk about the walkoff hit as well.

Tuesday Red Sox Mediocrity – 8/14

Josh Beckett (L), Wei-Yin Chen (R)

After splitting a four-game set in Cleveland, the Boston Red Sox continue their 10-game road trip in Baltimore. Tonight, they’ll kick off the first game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. And if you don’t live in either market you’re in luck as the MLB Network will have coverage of the game as well. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Josh Beckett looks to follow the success of his fellow starters in his 20th start of 2012. In his previous 19 starts, Beckett is 5-9 with a 4.97 ERA. He took the loss in his only start of 2012 against the O’s after allowing two runs in eight innings of work back on June 6th. He’s made 19 career starts against the Orioles and is 7-6 with a 4.12 ERA. 12 of those starts have come at Camden Yards where he is 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA.

Rookie Wei-Yin Chen makes his 24th start of 2012 for the still relevant Orioles. In his 23 previous starts, Chen is 10-7 with a 3.79 ERA. He’s made two starts against the Red Sox this season and is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (4 ER/12 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/14

Fans observe a moment of silence for the late Johnny Pesky of the Boston Red Sox prior to the game between the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers against the at Yankee Stadium on August 13, 2012 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

It was a sad day yesterday in Red Sox Nation as we learned about the passing of “Mr. Red Sox” Johnny Pesky. And with the Boston Red Sox on the road right now, there will be no tribute at the Fens until a later date.

I do expect at the very least that the Baltimore Orioles will hold a moment of silence before the game to pay their respects.

As for the business of baseball, this is a very important three-game series for the Red Sox.

They’ll enter this three-game set with the Orioles trailing them by 5.5 games in the AL East standings as well as for the second wild card. The two teams will play each other nine more times this season which includes these three games.

So realistically for the Red Sox to catch the Orioles, you would think they need to go 7-2 or 8-1 over the course of those final nine games the two teams play. While that would be great, we have to face facts that it probably won’t happen. I won’t say never since baseball can be a funny game.

What I do know is this though.

The Red Sox can make a statement that they aren’t out of anything yet by going into Camden Yards and sweeping the Orioles. However, being swept by the Orioles would probably end any hopes of the Red Sox making the playoffs. Like I said, I’ll never say never until the Red Sox are officially eliminated.

I think if the Red Sox can come out of this series at 2-1 and then go into New York and take two-of-three from the Yanks, they still have a fighting chance.

The Red Sox have been a decent road team all season as they are above .500 at 28-25. It’s at the Fens where they’ve struggled as they are 29-34. They’ll only have 18 games at home so if the road play can continue, we just can’t rule out the local nine.

It will be interesting though to watch. They have the talent.

It’s a matter of them having the will and catching a few breaks along the way.

It all starts tonight with Josh Beckett who we can only hope was inspired by the outings of Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester in Cleveland earlier in the road trip.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take a look at the overnight links from the media.

Adrian Gonzalez Named AL Co-Player of the Week

Boston Red Sox' Adrian Gonzalez hits a two-run home run against the Cleveland Indians in the first inning of a baseball game on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, in Cleveland.

Here’s the press release from the Boston Red Sox announcing that Adrian Gonzalez along with Baltimore Orioles rookie Manny Machado have been the American League Co-Players of the Week for the week ending 8/12/12:

Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for the period ending August 12th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Gonzalez batted .393 (11-for-28) with seven doubles, two home runs, 14 RBI and six runs scored in seven games to win his second weekly honor of the season (also for week ending July 22nd) and the seventh of his nine-year career. The left-handed-hitting slugger led the Majors in doubles and RBI. Among his A.L. counterparts, Gonzalez finished second in total bases (24), tied for third in hits and was fourth in slugging percentage (.857). On Monday, the 30-year-old went 3-for-5 with an RBI-double and two run-scoring singles as Boston defeated the A.L. West-leading Texas Rangers, 9-2, at Fenway Park. Gonzalez teamed with Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford and Dustin Pedroia to go 11-for-18 with eight doubles, eight RBI and six runs scored in the win. In Wednesday’s finale with Texas, the San Diego native notched a season-best three doubles with three RBI in a 10-9 loss. Wrapping up the week on Sunday, the top overall pick in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft (by Florida) went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, four RBI and two runs scored as Boston defeated the Cleveland Indians, 14-1, at Progressive Field. Gonzalez’s week comes as part of a second-half offensive surge as he leads the A.L. in batting average (.393), RBI (35) and slugging percentage (.673) since play resumed after the All-Star break on July 13th.

Machado batted .375 (6-for-16) with a double, a triple, three homers, seven RBI and five runs scored in four games to win his first career A.L. Player of the Week honor. The 20-year-old has made a splash since making his Major League debut on August 9th against the Kansas City Royals, hitting safely in each of his first four games. The Miami native tripled for his first career hit in his debut on Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. On Friday, the Orioles’ top prospect went 2-for-4 with a pair of homers and four RBI to lead the O’s to a 7-1 win over the Royals at home. Machado became the youngest Oriole since Jim Palmer in 1965 to homer, and he also became the youngest in Club history to record a multi-homer game, breaking Boog Powell’s 1962 mark by 223 days. Rounding out his inaugural week, the third overall pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft played a key role in Sunday matchup against Kansas City, launching a two-run homer in the second inning as the O’s went on to win, 5-3.

Other outstanding performances last week included New York Yankees infielder Eric Chavez (.563, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1.063 SLG); right-hander Jered Weaver (1-1, 1.69 ERA, four-hit SHO with 0 BB and 9 SO at Oakland on August 6th) of the Angels; Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander (1-0, 0.60 ERA, 15.0 IP, 0 HR, 1 BB, 22 SO); and Chicago White Sox left-hander Chris Sale (2-0, 2.45 ERA, 14.2 IP, 0 BB, 18 SO).

The co-winners of the American League Player of the Week, Adrian Gonzalez and Manny Machado, will each be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.

RIP Johnny Pesky, 1919-2012

As we learned earlier in the day, “Mr. Red Sox” Johnny Pesky has passed away at the age of 92. Since my words would do him no justice, here’s the press release from the Boston Red Sox about the passing of Pesky.

BOSTON, MA—Red Sox Hall of Famer Johnny Pesky, the beloved fixture at Fenway Park who spent 61 years with the club–including the last 44–passed away today at the age of 92.  He was surrounded by family and friends at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, MA.

Former Boston Red Sox Johnny Pesky greets the fans before the home opener between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays on April 13, 2012 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.Born John Michael Paveskovich on September 27, 1919, the Portland, OR native was signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1940 and spent 73 years in professional baseball.  With the Red Sox, he served as a player, coach, manager, broadcaster, instructor, and ambassador.  He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1995.

“We have lost a dear and beloved friend,” said Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry.  “Johnny was happiest when wearing the Red Sox uniform.  He was able to do that for 61 wonderful years.  He carried his passion for the Sox, for Fenway Park, and for baseball everywhere he went, and he was beloved in return.  We will miss him.  We share the sadness that his family and legions of friends are all feeling.”

The Red Sox will host a public tribute at Fenway Park at a later date.

“Johnny was one of the wonderful links to 70 years of Red Sox history,” said Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner.  “He was the grandfather of the Red Sox.  He was as loving and kind a gentleman as one could imagine.  His stories were delightful, and his love of Ted Williams and his teammates shone through in virtually every conversation.  We know that those stories, and his spirit, will continue to live on at Fenway Park.  We extend our sympathies to his son, David, his daughter-in-law Alison, and all of the members of the Pesky family.”

Pesky and his beloved wife, the former Ruthie Hickey, were married over 60 years.  She passed away in 2005.

“Johnny Pesky will forever be linked to the Boston Red Sox,” said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino.  “He has been as much a part of Fenway Park as his retired Number 6 that rests on the right-field façade, or the foul pole below it that bears his name. But beyond these physical testaments, Johnny will be remembered most for his warmth, kindness, and loyalty. It was through his countless friendships that Johnny made his greatest impact on us, and we will miss him dearly.  His was a life well-lived.”

To continue reading, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Pesky attended Opening Day this year, as well as the 100th Anniversary celebration on April 20.  His final visits to Fenway Park were Friday, August 3 for the induction of the Class of 2012 into the Red Sox Hall of Fame and again on Sunday, August 5, a Red Sox 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Pesky, whose Number 6 is one of the Red Sox’ eight retired numbers, led the Major Leagues with 205 hits as a 22 year-old in 1942, his first Major League season, setting a club rookie record that stood 55 years (until 1997).

He hit .331 that summer of ’42, second in the majors to Ted Williams’ .356 and finished third in MVP voting.  He missed the next three seasons, serving his country during World War II.

Upon his return, the left-handed hitter led the American League in hits in both 1946 (208) and 1947 (207), batting .335 and .324 in those seasons, respectively, to become the first American Leaguer with at least 200 hits in his first three seasons.

His three career 200-hit campaigns stood as the most by a Red Sox player for 32 years.

Pesky started at shortstop in the 1946 All-Star Game at Fenway Park and helped the club win the American League pennant that year.  He played every inning at shortstop in the seven-game World Series won by the St. Louis Cardinals.  He was back in St. Louis 58 years later when the Red Sox completed their historic comeback and won the 2004 World Series.

Over parts of his eight seasons playing for the Red Sox (through June 1952), Pesky hit .313 (1,277-for-4,085) with 196 doubles, 46 triples, 13 home runs, 361 RBI, 776 runs scored, 581 walks and 48 stolen bases, and he remains among Boston’s career leaders in batting average (7th), on-base percentage (7th, .401), runs scored (10th) and at-bats per strikeout (3rd, 21.61).

He joins Ted Williams and Wade Boggs as the only players in franchise history to score at least 750 runs while compiling a batting average of .300 or more.

Pesky’s six runs scored in a 14-10 win over the White Sox at Fenway Park on May 8, 1946 set an American League record that has since been tied but has yet to be surpassed.  In 1,029 games for Boston, the versatile infielder totaled 549 appearances at shortstop, 457 at third base and five at second base.  He turned a Major League-leading 48 double plays in 1949, still the Red Sox record for a third baseman.

Following a 10-year Major League career during which he also played for the Detroit Tigers (1952-’54) and Washington Senators (1954), he coached for the New York Yankees’ Triple-A Denver affiliate in 1955 under Ralph Houk and managed in the Detroit system with five minor league teams from 1956-’60.  He managed in the Nicaraguan Winter League in 1959.

Pesky rejoined the Red Sox organization in 1961 as skipper for the Triple-A Seattle Rainiers and reprised that role the next season before taking the helm of the Red Sox from 1963-’64.  Including managing the final five games of the 1980 season, he compiled an overall Major League managerial record of 147-179 (.451), all with Boston.  He spent 1965-’67 as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates and managed Pittsburgh’s Triple-A Columbus club in 1968.

The 1969 season began a continuous stretch of 44 years for Pesky as a member of the Red Sox organization.  He was a Red Sox radio and TV analyst for six seasons (1969-’74) before returning to the field as the team’s first base coach for nine years from 1975-’84.  He then served as special assistant to the Red Sox General Manager until 1992.  He was also interim manager at Triple-A Pawtucket for part of the 1990 season.  From 1993-’99, he was special assistant for Red Sox player development, and then held the position of special assignment instructor since 2000. In 1982, the Boston Baseball Writers gave him their Good Guy Award.

On April 11, 2005, Pesky and Carl Yastrzemski led the active players in raising the World Championship flag at Fenway Park.  Fenway Park’s right-field foul pole was dedicated as the “Pesky Pole” on September 27, 2006, his 87th birthday, making official what had been the established vernacular for decades.

The “Teammates” statue, which features Pesky and fellow legendary Red Sox Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Ted Williams, stands outside Gate B at Fenway Park.  Pesky was named to the Red Sox All-Time Team in a 1982 fan ballot.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/13

Dustin Pedroia #15 Adrian Gonzalez #28 and Cody Ross #7 of the Boston Red Sox celebrate after Gonzalez hit a two run home run during the first inning against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field on August 12, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio.

For 23 starts, we watched Jon Lester struggle like we’ve never seen before in his career. But for the first time this season yesterday afternoon, we watched the Boston Red Sox starter dominate a team in the Cleveland Indians.

Of course it didn’t hurt that the offense got him 14 runs in the first five innings, five of them coming in the first two innings. And with a lead like that Lester could do no wrong.

Honestly, it was fun to watch Lester pitch. And given how he started the game, you probably wouldn’t have thought he’d end allowing one run on three hits, two walks and 12 strikeouts.

The offense got him three runs in the top half of the 1st inning and back-to-back singles by Jason Donald and Asdrubal Cabrera, it looked like he’d give them back. But he struck out Shin-Soo Choo and then Carlos Santana brought in Donald with a sac fly. After a walk to Shelley Duncan, he got yesterday’s hero Brent Lillibridge to ground into a fielder’s choice.

Over the next three innings, he allowed two more hits while striking out six. In the 5th inning while Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo were going through DO’s man bag, Lester struck out the side. He finished his afternoon by striking out the final two batters he faced.

Offensively, the only starter to not have a hit was Danny Valencia although he did knock in a run with a sac fly in eight-run 5th inning.

Carl Crawford once again looked like the Crawford of old as he had three doubles and knocked in four runs. Mike Aviles was perfect on the afternoon going 3-for-3 with a double.

Adrian Gonzalez had a big afternoon as well. He had two hits including a two-run homer in the 1st and then added a two-run double in the 5th. Jacoby Ellsbury also had two hits, one of which was a two-run double in the 5th as well.

You almost had to feel bad for the Indians pitchers yesterday. It was like the Red Sox were taking out a season’s worth of frustration on them.

I had said last night that it’s hard to stay positive about this team. They, obviously, can be frustrating to watch at times. They haven’t gotten what they thought they’d get from Lester and Josh Beckett. Clay Buchholz has been the ace of this staff.

The win Lester got yesterday was his first since June 16th, yes June 16th. That was almost two months ago. Beckett has one win in his last 11 starts dating back to May 26th. So when you look at why the Red Sox are still two games below .500, you don’t really need to look any further.

I say that with a grain of salt though because you can’t place the blame solely on them. This is a team sport, not an individual one.

What you can hope for though is that yesterday’s game was the start of something special, like a big run. There’s still 46 games left in the season. They are just six games out of second place (Tampa Bay Rays) and 5.5 games out of third (Baltimore Orioles). Those two teams right now have the top spots in the AL Wild Card standings.

The Red Sox have nine games left against the Orioles, including the three in the series starting on Tuesday. They have six more games against the Rays. They also play two of the teams ahead of them, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (six games) and Oakland Athletics (three).

If at the very least, they can take 3/4 of those games and win the rest of their series along the way, the Red Sox are, by no means, out of it yet. It’s up to them though whether they want to play October baseball in the postseason or spend it making vacation plans.
