Red Sox Make Victorino Deal Official

While we wait to hear what's going on with the Mike Napoli deal is, the Boston Red Sox finalized their three-year deal with Shane Victorino on Thursday.

Here's the release from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today signed two-time All-Star and three-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner Shane Victorino to a three-year contract through the 2015 season.  The outfielder has been in postseason play five times in his nine-year career, including back to back pennants with Philadelphia in 2008 and 2009 and the World Series Championship against Tampa Bay in 2008.

Boston Red SoxThe former Phillies star, 32, set a career high with 39 stolen bases in 154 games with the Phillies and Dodgers in 2012, his fourth season with least at least 30 steals.  His 39 stolen bases and 86.7 percent success rate (45 attempts) both placed fourth in the National League last year.

After playing 7 ½ seasons with Philadelphia, he was acquired by the Dodgers on July 31 last year and led Los Angeles in stolen bases (15) and tied for the team lead in walks (18) starting August 1.  He hit a combined .255 (152-for-595) with 29 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs, 55 RBI, 72 runs, and 53 walks in 154 games last year, and was the 10th-hardest hitter in the NL to strike out (8.33 plate appearances per strikeout).

The switch-hitter is the only Major Leaguer to record double digits in double, triples, home runs, and stolen bases three times since 2009.  Since 2007, only eight other Major Leaguers have tallied a least four 30-steal campaigns.

Victorino has twice led the majors in triples, in 2009 (13) and 2011 (tied, 16).  He ranks second among big leaguers with 46 triples starting in 2009, trailing only Dexter Fowler (50), and is tied for 12th among active players with 65 career three-baggers.

A native of Wailuku, Hawaii, he became the first position player and fourth Hawaiian-born player overall to become an All-Star when he was selected in 2009.  He earned the honor again in 2011, when he also won the Mike Schmidt Player of the Year Award from the Philadelphia chapter of the BBWAA.

Victorino earned Rawlings Gold Gloves three straight seasons, 2008-10.  He has primarily played center field in his big league career (762 games), but also has played right (147) and left (111) fields.

He has committed just 10 errors in 2,226 total chances and leads all active outfielders with a .996 fielding percentage.  He has recorded double digits in assists three times, tying for the NL lead with 11 in 2010.  His 59 career assists rank seventh among NL outfielders over the last 10 seasons while his 18 double plays are third and his .881 zone rating is ninth.

In his career, Victorino has hit .275 (1,060-for-3,852) with 195 doubles, 90 home runs, 409 RBI, 616 runs, 334 walks and 201 stolen bases in 1,076 games with the Padres (2003), Phillies (2005-12) and Dodgers (2012).

Originally selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 1999 June Draft, Victorino was twice taken in the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft, by San Diego in 2002 and Philadelphia in 2004.

Victorino’s 30 career postseason RBI are second-most in Phillies history and his 13 RBI during Philadelphia’s 2008 World Series Championship run set a then-club record for a single postseason.  He clubbed the first grand slam in Phillies postseason history in Game 2 of the 2008 NLDS vs. Milwaukee off CC Sabathia.  He hit .293 (17-for-58) with nine RBI during the 2009 postseason, when the Phillies lost the Fall Classic to the New York Yankees, four games to two.

The Phillies’ nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award in 2010, he launched The Shane Victorino Foundation that year with his wife, Melissa.  The foundation promotes opportunities for underserved youth and provides children in need with educational, recreational, and wellness programs.  He has hosted an annual All-Star Celebrity Fashion Show in Philadelphia and Celebrity Dinner and Golf Classic in Hawaii to benefit the foundation, and treated nearly 500 children to Phillies games through his Flyin’ Hawaiian All-Stars ticket program.

Victorino was recognized nationally for his philanthropy in 2011 with the Branch Rickey Award, which honors humanitarians in Major League Baseball who personify “service above self.”  He also received the Phillies Community Service Award in 2010.

Victorino will wear No. 18.  With the signing, the Red Sox 40-man roster is now at 39.

Connecticut Whale 2, Worcester Sharks 1

By Wil Goldsholl

Hartford, CT, December 12, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale hadn’t lost three straight games in regulation on the season, and they kept it that way Wednesday night at the XL Center in Hartford with a 2-1 win over the Worcester Sharks, in which they outshot their Atlantic Division opponents 38-25. Marek Hrivik assisted goals from Chad Kolarik and J.T. Miller to snap a two-game Whale skid.

CT WhaleEarly in the first period, Worcester, the San Jose Sharks’ top affiliate, could not seem to clear the puck out of their own end for long stretches of time.  Even when they did manage an effective break-in, Connecticut quickly turned it around. Chris Kreider blocked Matt Tennyson’s shot from the point in the first few minutes and broke in alone on Sharks backstop Harri Sateri. His snap shot was denied, but it would set the bar for the first 20 minutes. The Whale had a 9-3 lead in the shot count at the midway mark of the first period.

Kelsey Tessier got held up by Matt Pelech breaking in to the zone at 10:54 and Micheal Haley went straight after Pelech, earning his 11th major of the year for fighting in addition to a roughing minor. The Whale killed that penalty and then received a power play of their own when Christian Thomas drew a hooking minor against blueliner Sean Acolatse. Fast puck movement and perimeter setup helped in breaking down the middle for chances. Ninety-five seconds in the offensive zone demonstrated that the Kolarik-Hrivik-Miller line would be running on all cylinders.

With two and a half to play, Kyle Jean came close on a Blake Parlett feed to the back door. A chance from the point soon after changed directions three or more times on the way to hitting Sateri. The first period would end scoreless; the Whale carrying a 13-6 shot advantage.

Cam Talbot, who made 25 saves on the night, earned four of them in the first 90 seconds of the second period as a Parlett penalty rolled over from the last minute of the first.

The teams traded penalties and scoring chances in the middle portion of the second period but still neither team could find the twine.

Finally, Worcester broke the deadlock with 98 seconds left in the period. James Livingston took a feed from Acolatse at the bench side of the neutral zone and walked in. Seeing Talbot less than perfectly square, snuck a wrister under the glove hand.

The Whale nearly replied a minute later when Tessier received a brilliant outlet pass up the gut. He was hooked on the way in and still got a shot off. Sateri made the save and, sliding backwards, appeared to be completely in the net. The play went for review and was called no goal. Travis Oleksuk was assessed his second minor of the night, this time for hooking at 19:28 of the second.

The third period started with an abbreviated Whale power play, as the second had started for the Sharks.

Mike Brennan came up with two big shot blocks on the PK to start the period; he stayed on for the duration of the kill but undoubtedly needed some ice packs after the game.

Kolarik tallied his team-leading ninth goal of the year to get Connecticut on the board when he received a feed from the point to the half-boards. Kolarik curled the circle and let a wrist shot go. Sateri got a piece of it but the shot forced its way under his stick side arm. Miller and Hrivik assisted. The goal came 1:23 in to the third period and the game was tied at one.

A few quiet minutes went by before Miller struck with one of his own. The breakout, delivered from Parlett, then Hrivik, led Miller in to the zone where he hammered a slapshot from the left circle, once again under the arm of Worcester’s Finnish goalkeeper.

Sateri made numerous timely saves in the later portions of the third period to keep his team alive. A late power play came on a Kris Newbury roughing penalty and Sateri got out of the net with 70 seconds to go, but the Atlantic Division-leading Worcester squad could not get a puck past Talbot again. Sateri finished with 36 saves.

Worcester falls to 12-9-1-2, while the Whale stay afloat in the Northeast with an 11-11-2-0 record overall. Connecticut will host the Albany Devils and the Portland Pirates on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

HARTFORD, December 12, 2012:  Connecticut Whale general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the Whale has signed goaltender Bryan Hince to a Professional Tryout (PTO) agreement from its ECHL affiliate, the Greenville Road Warriors, and that fellow backstop Jason Missiaen has been reassigned from the Whale to Greenville.

CT WhaleHince, a third-year pro out of SUNY-Plattsburgh, has played three games for the Road Warriors this year, going 1-2-0 with ten goals-against on 113 shots for a 3.36 goals-against average and a 91.2% save percentage.  The 6-0, 195-pound Kapukasing, Ontario native registered his first professional shutout in his Road Warrior season debut, a 3-0 win at Trenton November 24 in which Hince made 30 saves.

Since turning pro in 2010-11, the 26-year-old Hince has appeared in 15 ECHL games with the Road Warriors and Idaho Steelheads, with a 12-3-0 record, a 2.91 GAA, a 91.0% save percentage and one shutout.  He has also logged 50 Southern Professional Hockey League games with the Knoxville Ice Bears, going 31-15-0 with a 2.70 GAA and a 91.7% save percentage.

In The Red Zone – December 12

In the Red Zone

Not the Epic Battle We Expected

Going into Monday night’s game I thought it’d be much closer than what the game and the final score indicated.  Houston has been playing very good football for a year and half now and I was expecting a battle.  I should have known better.

Houston seemingly tends to sputter when it meets up with a veteran team who has “been there, done that.”  It happened earlier this season when they were manhandled by the Green Bay Packers and on Monday night the Patriots made them their bitch and did it in front of a national television audience and many NFL pundits who expected the Texans to go into Foxboro and win.

Silly, silly boys.

The New England Patriots are the big bad bully of the NFL and have been for a decade.  When you play them you better be wearing your big pants and be prepared for anything.  Very few teams match up to New England and without rehashing some stuff we all know who they are.  Others can get lucky or catch some breaks on any given Sunday as well.  How would you like to see the three losses this team has replayed NOW.

If it weren’t for a bullshit holding call and missed field goal in Week 2, a field goal I am still not sure went over the upright in Week 3 and some awful late game pass defense in Week 6 this team is unbeaten.  That’s how close it is between 10-3 and 13-0.

Now that the calendar has flipped to December this team is even harder to knock off.  They have won 23 of the last 24 December home games at Gillette Stadium, including 20 in a row.  They last lost at home in December in the year 2002 to the Jets who were coached by Herm Edwards.  That’s ten seasons in which they have not lost a December home game.

Now lets look at the Patriots on the road in December they are 20-4 in the same span.  How many teams can go on the road late in the season with big games on the line and fly home happy?

Last night you saw a veteran been there, done that team absolutely dismantle a team that made the game too big for what it was.  Regardless of the outcome Houston still was going to be sitting as the #1 seed in the AFC.  For some reason the players decided the game was really big for the franchise.  Maybe because it was the Patriots with the history, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.  Sure they could use the game as a measuring stick but if they did it quietly in house and shut out the hype they may have been able to play their game.

They better hope they learn an awful lot from Monday night because now they have to hold off the Indianapolis Colts twice in the last three weeks and then regroup for the playoffs.

Now is the time of year when you see what teams are made of.  In New England we know about our team, in Houston they’re still hoping to find out.

To Boo Or Youuuuk?

To boo or Youuuuk? That is now the question upon us.

Kevin YoukilisOn the one hand, if you Youuuuk, it's going to sound like you're booing anyways. On the other hand, is it warranted?

According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the New York Yankees and Kevin Youkilis have agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million.

The Yanks had a need for Youk at third base with Alex Rodriguez out for 4-6 months with a hip injury.

But that leads to us the question, do we boo Youk when the Yankees make their first visit to Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox on July 19, 2013?

When Wade Boggs left for the Yankees, he was booed. Same with Roger Clemens even though he was forced out of Boston. Even Johnny Damon after winning the 2004 World Series with the Red Sox was booed by the Fenway faithful.

So with Youk willingly signing with the Yankees, based on past precedent, he should be booed.

But given how much he's done for the Red Sox in his career, should we boo?

That's the question I'll leave you with to answer.
