UCONN Football Beats Pittsburgh

If you were one of the UCONN faithful at Saturday afternoon’s football game and left early, you are an idiot. You missed probably the greatest comeback for UCONN football. Led by DJ Hernandez and Donald Brown II, UCONN rallied from a 31-17 deficit to win the game in double overtime 46-45. A gutsy call by Coach Randy Edsall had the Huskies going for a two point conversion down 1 after they had just scored. The Huskies set up in a pass formation and as they snapped the ball, everyone was covered and DJ scrambled, almost getting tackled, into the end zone for the winning two points. Surprisingly, no UCONN fans stormed the field to celebrate with the jubilant Huskies at midfield. The win over Pittsburgh keeps UCONN’s bowl hopes alive still needing to win 2 of their last 3 games @Syracuse, home vs Cincinnati, and @Louisville. Continue reading

Foulke Declines Option

Keith Foulke, the former Red Sox closer, declined his player option for next season making him a free agent. He will receive a $1.5 million dollar buy out.

Foulke declined the option because he wanted to finish his career in a city near his family. He had been troubled by knee problems over the past few seasons and had been replaced as closer by rookie Jonathan Papelbon.

UCONN vs Quinnipiac

Tonight, November 10th, the UCONN Huskies, led by Jeff Adrien’s double double, defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 53-47. It was an ugly game for the Huskies as the team was very “Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde” like scoring 35 pts in the first half and 18 pts in the second half.

UCONN Women’s Early Signing

Lorin Dixon, one of the top women’s high school point guards in the country is supposed to sign her letter of intent to play at UCONN next season. Dixon attends the same high school (Christ of King in NYC) as former Lady Husky, Sue Bird. Dixon will be expected to compete with Renee Montgomery and Ketia Swanier for time at the point next season. UCONN is also expected to receive a letter of intent from Maya Moore, who is the top high school player in the country. Looks like the rich are getting richer here at UCONN.

Ramirez and Big Papi Win Silver Slugger Awards

Today it was announced that Manny Ramirez and David “Big Papi” Ortiz won Silver Slugger Awards for their prowess at the plate.

The Louisville Silver Slugger award is given annually to the best offensive player at each position in each league. Winners are picked by major league managers and coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

For Ramirez, it is his 8th consecutive Silver Slugger and 9th overall. Big Papi won his 3rd consecutive and 3rd overall. Each of them earned a $100, 000 dollar bonus. If they can’t find a way to spend the money, I am sure I can help them out.

Red Sox Win Matsuzaka Bidding??

According to a report by Buster Olney of espn.com, the Red Sox may have won the rights to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka, of the Seibu Lions, and his agent, Scott Boras. It is reported that the Sox may have bid upwards of $40 million dollars just for the right to negotiate. The Seibu Lions have until next Tuesday to announce their intentions.

For those who don’t understand why the Red Sox are bidding for him, I will explain briefly. Most Japanese players who are under contract and want to come to the Major Leagues are usually put up to bid by their team in Japan. Teams will bid on the player. Those bids are given to the Japanese club. The Japanese club usually has a week to decide whether or not they want to accept the highest bid. Once they accept the highest bid, they are then notified of the winning team. The winner of the bid then has 30 days to get the player signed to a contract otherwise he is returned to his team for the upcoming season.

Ultimately, the Red Sox could end up spending about $80 to 90 million dollars for Matsuzaka. He should command a $10 million dollars a year contract and knowing the antics of his agent, Scott Boras, he will probably get at least that a year.
