Red Sox News & Notes – 8/5

Sorry for the late post today and missed recap. With my bags getting back a day late, I missed a day of some medication and slept like crazy. So better late than never.

The Boston Red Sox finally broke the winless streak in Seattle with another strong outing by Daisuke Matsuzaka. Surprisingly, the Red Sox scored more runs (4) than they had in 10 of his last 12 starts (2). Some timely hitting and strong bullpen work finished it off for the Sox as they now look to get out of Seattle today with another win. But before they do, let’s take a look at the headlines and happenings from the Boston area and Seattle media on another warm day in RSN.

Broken Heart

Peggy and John W. HenryRed Sox principal owner John W. Henry has filed for divorce from his wife of 14 years, Peggy Henry.

Henry filed for divorce in Florida over two months ago. Saying they’ve grown apart over recent years. A family friend said she doesn’t like being here and moving their child to Boston for the baseball season. The friend added that Mrs. Henry liked her life in Florida prefers that social scene as all of her friends are there.

The split is said to be very amicable.

A Red Sox spokesperson says that the divorce “will have no effect on Mr. Henry’s ownership of the Red Sox or New England Sports Ventures”.

The Sox were 10-7 at home and 5-5 on the road in July.

Patriots Pieces From Camp

Patroits Word Logo

Randy Moss returned to the practice field Friday but didn’t participate in any contact drills because of an apparent hamstring injury he suffered on Wednesday. He sat out the Thursday’s sessions and was a spectator for the most part yesterday.

One of the stories of camp is a newer slimmed down Vince Wilfork. With the love and a push from his wife, Bianca, Vince has dropped 6 inches from his waist and 7% of his body fat. Wilfork only needed to be reminded he lost his parents to diabetes and high blood pressure. While he still weighs in at 325 pounds Vince looks noticeably leaner and healthier.

Bianca Wilfork has gotten her husband to stop eating two gigantic meals a day and got him to eat six smaller ones. So now his diet consists of fruit, nuts, vegetables, beans, baked chicken and fish.

As always, when it comes to contracts, the Patriots are mum. This time it’s on coach Bill Belichick’s deal.

He and owner Robert Kraft have an agreement that they don’t speak publicly on the coach’s contract but Kraft did have this to say. “I’m happy with what he’s doing and he’s happy with what he’s doing. I think we have a great nucleus of players here and we’re excited about the upcoming season. And we hope we make the playoffs. That’s our objective.”

Reportedly this is the last season of Belichick’s current contract and the coach has hinted he plans on staying beyond this season.

The NFL is limiting news organizations websites to no more than 45 seconds of online video or audio of team personnel from it’s stadiums per day. The NFL is wants to prevent newspapers, TV and Radio stations from diminishing the value of it’s multimedia properties, namely NFL.com and the websites of the 32 NFL teams.

In addition, news sites are barred from running advertisements next to any online NFL content. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said ” The Internet is a new medium with potential revenue sources, we want to carefully manage our audio and video property.”

“News sites are looking at the [NFL] video as a business opportunity,” Aiello added. “I don’t believe it’s about news coverage.” According to the league, the musings of its players, coaches, and owners are the league’s intellectual property.

I think that’s the first time in a while that “NFL” and “intellectual” have been used in the same sentence.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/4

It was a homecoming for Jon Lester last night as he pitched in front of family and friends at Safeco Field last night. Unfortunately, the homecoming didn’t go as well as the Red Sox would have hoped as they lost their 9th straight game in Seattle. Some costly mistakes by Mike Timlin led to the downfall. Moving on, let’s take a look at the headlines from the Boston area and Seattle morning on this hot morning here in New England.
