Red Sox News & Notes – 8/23

As Steve’s headline from last night’s game recap says, the Red Sox left a small village on the bases. 14 runners were left on base by the Red Sox loss last night to the Devil Rays. Dice-K pitched really well last night with one mistake. A fastball left up to B.J. Upton that he hit out for a 2-run homer. That was all the runs the D’Rays could score. As the Red Sox continue not to give Dice-K run support, let’s take a look at the headlines from the Boston and Tampa area media on this Thursday in Red Sox Nation.

Cowboys 30 Ravens 3

Oops. Sorry about that. For some reason when I was looking at the baseball scores tonight, I thought they had put a football score in with the baseball scores.

In all seriousness, I had an idea of what was going on because Anthony was doing our radio show from Camden Yards tonight and was giving us score updates. When the show ended it was the Rangers 24 and the Orioles 3. When the game ended, the Rangers had won the game 30-3.

The 30 runs by the Rangers is a modern day MLB record and is also the American League record. It is also the most runs scored in a game by a team since June 29, 1897 when the Chicago Colts (now as the Cubs) put up a 36 spot on the Louisville Colonels.

The heroes of the game for the Rangers were anyone who played for them. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez were 4-6 with 2 homers and 7 RBIs.

And btw, that was only the first game of a doubleheader. Texas put up 9 more runs in the second game to win that one as well.

Brady Set To Begin Baby Mamma Drama

Brady and Moynahan when he was banging her like a screendoor in a hurricane

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his former girlfriend Bridget Moynahan became parents in Los Angeles today. The baby boy and the mom are doing well according to Moynahan’s publicist, Christina Papadopolous.

No other information on the birth was released.

Moynahan and Brady split up late last year after a three-year relationship. Brady has since moved on to model Gisele Bundchen.

Moynahan, 36, is a former model who has starred in such films as “Coyote Ugly,” “I, Robot” and “The Sum of All Fears.” Her television credits include “Sex and the City” and the ABC series “Six Degrees.”

Let the baby momma drama begin!!!

Sox Leave A Small Village On The Bases, Lose To Rays 2-1

In a game that looked like the Red Sox were in total control, Boston could only manage one run despite an outstanding effort from Daisuke Matsuzaka (13-10) they would lose to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 2-1 at Tropicana Field.

Once again runners left on base and more importantly runners left is scoring position killed several chances Boston had to expand their early lead and even break the game wide open. The Sox would leave 14 runners on base in total, 7 of them in scoring position.

Matsuzaka, who lost for the third time this season to the Rays, was really good tonight. In 6 innings he gave up 2 hits, walked 4 and struck out 8 while allowing only two runs. On most nights that’s good enough for a win but for Daisuke this year it’s almost as if he has to throw a shutout to win because of the lack of run support.

Rays starter Edwin Jackson (4-12) should consider himself a very lucky man. The Sox had their chances in all six innings he pitched but with the failure of the batters, especially Jason Varitek and Alex Cora, to come through he was able to wiggle out of jams all night long.

And wiggle he did until B.J. Upton took him off the hook with a sixth inning two-run homerun into the rightfield seats to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage that the Rays bullpen would make stand up with some help from the Boston batting order.

The Red Sox drew first blood in the game in the third inning when Dustin Pedroia was hit on the left arm by a pitch from Jackson, Kevin Youkilis followed with a double over the leaping Jonny Gomes in rightfield to move Pedroia to third. David Ortiz walked for the second time on the night to load the bases with no outs for Mike Lowell who hit a sacrifice fly to Carl Crawford in leftfield to plate Pedroia for a 1-0 Boston lead. The Sox would be unable to add to it as J.D. Drew popped out to Brendan Harris at 2nd and Varitek grounded out to Joel Guzman at first with Jackson covering to end the inning.

Matsuzaka looked really good through the first three innings only allowing a 1 out third inning single to Josh Wilson while striking out 4 in facing one hitter over the minimum.

Jackson meanwhile struggled through his first four innings giving up a pair of hits, walking both Ortiz and Eric Hinske twice and hit Pedroia but he had only given up the one run because the Sox left 6 runners on base including 3 who were in scoring position.

The Rays finally got a couple runners on against Matsuzaka in the bottom of the fourth by getting a pair of walks but were unable to do anything with them as Matsuzaka got out of his mini-jam.

Boston tried to tack on a run in the fifth inning, with one out Ortiz sliced a double into leftfield, Lowell singled to center but Upton threw out Ortiz at the plate for the second out of the inning. Drew walked to put runners on first and second but Varitek would strike out. In the first five innings the Sox left 4 runners in scoring position and 8 in total on the bases.

Tampa Bay finally got to Matsuzaka in the 6th with one out Carlos Pena walked and Upton followed with his 18th HR of the season into the rightfield seats and it was 2-1 Rays. It was only the second hit Matsuzaka had given up. He would get Harris to pop out, then Gomes would reach on a two-base throwing error by Lowell before Guzman would become Matsuzaka’s 8th strike out victim to end the inning. He threw 111 pitches as he left the game after the inning.

What’s a Slutter?

Papelbon Mohawk

Well if you’re thinking it is your ex-girlfriend who sleeps around, you could be right but this you’re wrong. It is the latest pitch from Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon has found it easier to save 30-games than to invent a pitch but Papelbon has recently done both. Last night he notched his 30th save becoming the first Red Sox reliever to have two 30-save seasons. Last night he also unveiled a new pitch.

“It’s a cross between a slider and a cutter,” insisted Papelbon. He had been trying to throw a cutter, that was taught to him by Curt Schilling but was having difficulty and he incorporated the cutter with a slider and he got the “slutter”.

“It’s not a true slider. It’s not a true cutter.” Papelbon said. “I leave my palm (up), I kind of cut the ball. That’s the angle it comes out (at).”

Jason Varitek and Kyle Synder say it is a slider but Papelbon will have none of that. Why does a dominating closer like Papelbon need another pitch and how in the heck did he invent it.

“I kind of turned the cutter, because it didn’t work, into the slutter,” said Papelbon, who was only too happy to discuss what he called “the biomechanics of Jonathan Papelbon,” which is something they don’t teach at his alma mater, Mississippi State, never mind MIT. “I consider inventing a pitch a lot harder than saving 30 games back to back.”

If he continues to have success with this pitch, it could be lights out every night for teams.

[Hat tip to Texy for the find since I wasn’t home all day. She also has video of it.]

Update: Super Sexy Texy also has the video from today’s (Wednesday) pregame show with an interview with Paps about this pitch.

59-Year Old College Football Player

Sul Ross State University

Mike Flynt had one regret in his life. Not finishing his college football career.

After a few beers one night with friends they got onto the subject of regrets, and Flynt mentioned being kicked off the Sul Ross State University football team before his senior year. One of his friends told him to do something about it.

So Flynt, re-enrolled at Sul Ross State in Austin TX, started practicing with the team and he has made the roster for the Division III football team. His position is yet to be determined by his coach, Steve Wright, who is 8 years younger than Flynt. Flynt in fact has two kids who are older than most of his teammates and his youngest child just entered the University of Tennessee.

Flynt, a former college linebacker, was a long time strength and conditioning coach at Texas A&M, Nebraska and Oregon has spent the last several yeas promoting the Powerbase training system he invented. But now 37-years removed from his last action the 5-foot-1o, 200 pound Flynt is back on the girdiron.

He is expected to go into the books as the oldest player in NCAA Football history.
