Replacing Gil and Gino

Gino CappallettiGil SantosThere’s been more and more call over the last few seasons to replace Gil Santos and Gino Cappelletti in the booth calling games every week on the Patriots Rock Radio Network. While both, especially Santos, were at one time fine announcers they are like watching an aging pitcher who doesn’t have his fastball anymore. Listening to G&G on a fall Sunday afternoon in New England used to be a treat now it’s more like watching Mike Timlin pitch. You love them for all they’ve brought to you but there are more and more signs that the game has passed them by.

They simply don’t have it any longer. They miss plays, miss identify players, down and distance, yard markers and if it came down to it I don’t think either Santos or Cappelletti could identify Pat Patriot. To me the glaring error was last year in Week 17 against the Giants when Brady threw a record setting TD pass to Randy Moss on the bomb. It was Brady’s 50th TD pass, Moss’ 23rd TD catch, both NFL records, and the G&G boys didn’t know who the receiver was until way after the celebration had started. There aren’t many players in the entire NFL who look and play like Moss and that should have been an easy ID.

But I’m not here to bash Santos and Cappelletti, really I’m not, it would be like bashing Timlin I can’t do it. But it is high time that the Kraft family looks at some replacements for both of them in the booth for the 2009 season.

So if you had your choices who would you put in there. To replace Cappelletti as an analyst you can go a few different ways and I hope to God that one of those ways is never, ever named Fred Smerlas, Andy Gresh or Steve DeOssie. Some of more sane choices amongst former Patriots players might be Scott Zolak, Tim Fox, recently retired Troy Brown, Hall of Famer Andre Tippett, Steve Nelson, Craig James or local hero Doug Flutie.

My choice would be Zolak, he is articulate, put together, knows the game, the players and would be a good fit. According to things I have heard the Kraft family thinks very highly of him and his abilities.

Choices for a new play-by-play person to replace Santos are probably more complicated. But as long as Dale Arnold and Jon Meterparel stay well away from the booth I can live with it. Some of the choices here might include WCVB’s Mike Lynch who already does the sideline reports for the preseason games on TV and does the Patriots All-Access broadcasts. I also think former Red Sox announcer and current ESPN football/basketball guy Sean McDonough would be a good choice as well as ESPN’s Joe Tessitore and Brad Nessler. Grabbing an announcer from another NFL team would be possibility three guys who I think do a good job are Josh Lewin in San Diego (he also calls Texas Rangers baseball games), Dave Pasch in Arizona and Bob Wischusen (Boston College grad) from the Jets.

Sean McDonoughBut if I had to pick I’d go with McDonough. To me he is just too good, too local and too logical a choice to at least make a run at.

And it’s not as if McDonough couldn’t still do the college games for ESPN as many of the NFL radio guys also work college games.  In fact Pasch and Wischusen do it as well as other NFL announcers like Dave Lapham and Wayne Larrivee.

So if you had a new Patriots Rock Radio Network dream team who would be your two guys? Feel free to add suggestions to the names in the comments.

North Carolina Embarasses UConn 38-12

Bruce Carter's 3 blocked punts were huge for the Tar Heels in their 38-12 win

The UConn Huskies came into tonight’s game against the North Carolina Tar Heels riding the momentum of last week’s big win in Louisville. The same could be said for the Tar Heels coming in off of a big win over the Miami Hurricanes. So something had to give tonight.

Well what gave was the UConn special teams early on as North Carolina took advantage of 2 blocked punts and rolled to a 38-12 win over the Huskies in front of 59,500 at  Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, NC. The loss for the Huskies drops them to 5-1 while the Tar Heels improve to 4-1.

Statisically speaking, this game was dominated by UConn but as you can tell by the final score of the game, the Tar Heels dominated the scoreboard.

Things looked good for the Huskies early on as they rolled down the field but the UNC defense held strong and forced the Huskies to kick a field goal. UConn’s defense held strong on UNC’s first possession holding them to a field goal.

Then Bruce Carter took over. His first blocked punt gave the Tar Heels ideal field position and they got a touchdown from Ryan Houston. Carter blocked another punt in the end zone that was recovered in the end zone and the Tar Heels never looked back from there.

It was a rough night for Zach Frazer and the UConn Huskies

It was a rough night for Zach Frazer and the UConn Huskies.

The only time Zach Frazer ever looked good was on the first drive. He looked like he did in the Louisville game but then North Carolina’s defense really tightened up. Donald Brown may have rushed for 161 yards tonight but most of them came in the 2nd half when the game had already been decided. Frazer ended up 24-of-44 for 210 yards but the key stat was his 3 interceptions. One of them was returned for a touchdown and another set up a UNC touchdown.

The UNC defense did a great job of shutting down Brown as they really made it hard for him to find the holes. Their defense was definitely quick and I’m sure they were faster than Randy Edsall and the Huskies thought they were.

The Huskies did a great job of keeping Tar Heels superstar Brandon Tate in check as they kicked away from him and held him to 17 yards receiving and 1 rushing yard. He had 1 kickoff return for 20 yards and 1 punt return for 8 yards.

Obviously this disappointing loss for the  Huskies will knock them out of the Top 25 in both polls this week and in my opinion, the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for Edsall’s Huskies.

Scoring:

UConn Huskies 3 0 3 6 12
North Carolina Tar Heels
10 7 14 7 38

1st quarter

CON – Tony Ciaravino 26-yard field goal – UConn 3 North Carolina 0

UNC – Casey Barth 31-yard field goal – UConn 3 North Carolina 3

UNC – Ryan Houston 1-yard run (Barth PAT) – North Carolina 10 UConn 3

2nd quarter

Matt Merletti recovers the blocked punt in the end zone

Matt Merletti recovers the blocked punt in the end zone for the Tar Heels

UNC – Matt Merletti recovers blocked punt in end zone (Barth PAT) – North Carolina 17 UConn 3

3rd quarter

CON – Ciaravino 31-yard field goal – North Carolina 17 UConn 6

UNC – Shaun Draughn 39-yard run (Barth PAT) – North Carolina 24 UConn 6

UNC – Marvin Austin 23-yard interception return (Barth PAT) – North Carolina 31 UConn 6

4th quarter

UNC – Cameron Sexton 14-yard pass to Hakeem Nicks (Barth PAT) – North Carolina 38 UConn 6

CON – Donald Brown 1-yard run (2 pt attempt no good) – North Carolina 38 UConn 12

Offensive Player of the Game:

It’s hard for me to pick Donald Brown because of the final score tonight  and the fact that 93 of his yards came in the 4th quarter with the game out of reach, so I’m going with UNC tailback Shaun Draughn as the offensive player of the game. He had 19 rushes for a career-high 109 yards and 1 touchdown.

Defensive Player of the Game:

UNC’s Bruce Carter had 7 tackles and 3 blocked punts including one that was recovered for a touchdown. Two of his tackles went for 8 yards in losses total. He also was credited with one pass breakup.

Turning Point(s) of the Game:

1. The two blocked punts were huge for the Tar Heels as it really took the wind out of the sails of the Huskies.

2. The interception thrown by Zach Frazer late in the 1st half as the Huskies were rolling down the field. Had they scored, there would have been very little time left and they were set to receive the opening kickoff in the 2nd half.

Beckett Locked And Loaded For Game 3

Josh Beckett is ready for tomorrow night's Game 3

Beseiged by injuries all season and then right before the playoffs, it was thought that the Boston Red Sox would be without the services of their ace Josh Beckett. But after a couple of workouts and a side session, Beckett is ready to roll and that should mean good things for the Red Sox given his track record in October.

In 9 starts and 1 relief appearance in Beckett’s favorite time of year, October baseball, he is 6-2 with a 1.73 ERA. His ERA in 2 League Division series appearances, 1 with Florida and 1 with Boston, is a minuscule .56. In the postseason last year for the Red Sox, Beckett was 4-0 with a 1.33 ERA. And opponents are hitting just .159 against him in the postseason.

So as you can see October is Beckett’s month to shine.

“I like it because the weather’s nice. Like I said, it just comes to opportunity. I’ve been put in a lot of situations during this time of year to be successful. I’ve taken advantage of them, so I really don’t put too much else into it.”

“I think a lot of it has to do with opportunity, [being] put into situations to succeed. You take advantage of them. A lot of it comes down to preparation and being put in that opportunity.”

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want anyone else on the mound but Beckett tomorrow night as the Red Sox look to head to the ALCS for the second straight season.

Boston Red Sox ALDS News & Notes – 10/4

Boston Red Sox vs Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim ALDS

2 down, 9 to go.

What an absolutely heart wrenching game last night!!! First the Boston Red Sox get out to a 4-0 lead the 1st inning and the Daisuke Matsuzaka goes out and gives 1 run back. Then the Red Sox go out and get a run in the 4th only to see Dice-K give another one back. The Angels would chip away at the lead eventually tying it up in the 8th inning only to see J.D. Drew hit a 2-run home run to keep that awfully large elephant on their back in the 9th inning.

The loss for the Angels was their 11th straight to the Red Sox in the postseason dating back to 1986. While the 1986 games may not be a factor in the Angels thinking, you know that the games of 2004, 2007 and now 2008 weigh heavily on their minds. This brings the question, can the Angels ever beat the Red Sox in the postseason.

The Angels dominated the series this season winning 8-of-9 and so far in the postseason they are 0-2 against the mighty Red Sox as the worst president of our lifetime George W. Bush would call them. And now things won’t get any easier for the Angels as they will face the Red Sox ace in Josh Beckett who came through his side session on Thursday with flying colors.

All it takes is one more win and the Red Sox head the ALCS for the second straight season. And by chance if Beckett can’t get it done on Sunday night at Fenway, then Jon Lester is waiting in the wings to take the Red Sox to the promised land.

Before this series even started, there was a chance that J.D. Drew would not have played at all do to his back. Now he’s the hero of Game 2.

“Yeah, absolutely. I thought at some point I was going to have shut it down and just watch the team through the playoffs,” Drew said. “It was nice to be out there and participate. Trying to get everything into playing shape while you’re in the playoffs isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it’s working out and my legs are coming back underneath me and I’m trying to grind out at-bats, play good defense, and see what happens.”

J.D. Drew’s 2-Run Home Run Wins It For The Red Sox

J.D. Drew celebrates after his 2-run homer gave the Red Sox a 7-5 lead in the 9th.

J.D. Drew’s 2-run home run in the the top of the 9th inning off of Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez gave the Boston Red Sox a 7-5 win in front of 45,534 stunned fans at Angel Stadium of Anaheim to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 American League Division Series.

The win for the Red Sox is a Major League record 11th straight win over one team in the playoffs. It is also their 9th straight win in the playoffs.

David Ortiz got things started in the top of the 9th with a double off of K-Rod. Coco Crisp came into pinch-run for Big Papi and K-Rod got Youk to ground out to shortstop leaving Coco at second. K-Rod then hung a changeup to Drew who put it out of the park to give the Red Sox a 7-5 lead.  Jason Bay and Mark Kotsay followed with back-to-back singles but K-Rod got out of the inning by getting Jason Varitek to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

Jonathan Papelbon was back out for his second inning of work in the bottom half of the 9th looking to send the Red Sox back to Boston with a 2-0 lead.

Torii Hunter led off the inning by trying to bunt his way on but a great throw by Kevin Youkilis nailed Hunter at first. Youk then made a great catch on the second out as reached over the photographer’s well to grab a Gary Matthews foul pop up. Papelbon ended the game with a strikeout of Howie Kendrick.

Daisuke Matsuzaka was far from perfect.

Daisuke Matsuzaka was far from perfect tonight as the Angels took advantage of his wildness.

Daisuke Matsuzaka started for the Red Sox and seemed to be in control early on. Then all of the sudden in the 5th inning, he lost command of his pitches. He ended up going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while fanning 5 on 108 pitches. Hideki Okajima worked an inning giving up a run on 2 hits. Justin Masterson went an inning allowing a run on a hit and 2 walks. He also struck out 2. Papelbon was perfect for 2 innings to pick up the win.

Drew and Bay both had great nights at the plate as both of them were 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI. Big Papi had 2 hits and Jacoby Ellsbury had 1 and the other RBI. The only member of the starting nine without a hit for the Red Sox was Dustin Pedroia who went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

Jason Bay connects on a 3-run homer in the 1st inning.

Jason Bay connects on a 3-run homer in the 1st inning.

Angels starter Ervin Santana started out the 1st inning by retiring Ellsbury and Pedroia. Big Papi followed up with a single to extend his ALDS hitting streak to 13 games. Youkthen hit a single and Drew laced a double to right center that scored Big Papi to make it 1-0. Santana then left a pitch out over the plate that Bay absolutely crushed for a 3-run homer to put the Red Sox up 4-0. Kotsay singled but Varitek popped out to end the inning.

Dice-K also got the first two outs of the inning but Mark Teixeira and Vlad Guerrero had back-to-back singles. A Hunter single knocked in Teixeira from second base to cut the Red Sox lead to 2-1.

Both the Red Sox and Angels went quietly in the 2nd inning as well as the Red Sox in the 3rd inning.

Schilling Takes Shot At Curly Haired Boyfriend

Curt SchillingIn a post over at 38 Pitches where Curt Schilling says he thinks the Red Sox can and will win the World Series, there’s a nice little nugget at the end of the post.

Oh and I know I claimed I’d never mention him again but I can’t pass this up. CHB, no one that’s EVER worn a major league uniform has uttered the term ‘cookie fastball’… Where the hell did you hear that? A fastball down the pipe is a cookie, or some of the products Keebler makes are cookies, but there is no such thing as a ‘cookie fastball’ you dork.

You have to love the Big Schill.
