Mel Thomas Heading To Ireland

Mel Thomas - Depth of Field PhotoFormer UConn Huskies women’s basketball player Mel Thomas will be returning to action this weekend when she takes the court for the Bausch and Lomb Waterford Wildcats in the Basketball Ireland’s Womens Superleague.

Thomas her senior season with the Huskies cut short when she blew out her knee against the Syracuse Orange on January 15th with just under 2 minutes to go.  After her surgery, Thomas spent many many months rehabbing her knee to get back to this point of playing competitive basketball again. She was still a huge part of the team as well cheering on her teammates at every game.

Thomas will practice with the Wildcats on Thursday and then will play in her first game on Saturday when they travel to Dublin to take on the Tolka Rovers BC.

We wish you all the best Mel and good luck.

And oh by the way, Mel’s book “Heart of a Husky” should be in bookstores sometime before Christmas.

Patriots Tailgating Tidbits Week 7

Tailgating Patriots fans

The Patriots will look to rebound from an awful beating last Sunday night at the hands of the San Diego Chargers and they have to do it against their own personal nemesis, the Denver Broncos.  The Patriots always have a difficult time with Denver whether it’s on the road or like tonight’s matchup at home in Gillette Stadium.  Bill Belichick in his career is only 2-8 against the Broncos and as the Patriots head coach he is 2-4 plus a playoff loss.  The Patriots haven’t beaten the Broncos in Foxboro since October 24, 1999 when they won, 24-23 as Terry Allen rushed for 106 yards and 2 TD’s.

This is the 600th Monday Night Football Game in NFL history.  The Broncos also played in #400 and #500 both times against the Raiders.

Al Riveron will be tonight’s referee.  It’s his first Patriots game in his first season as a NFL referee.

In case you missed it don’t forget to check out the official Sox & Dawgs Week 7 Broncos-Patriots game preview. It has all the game information you need including odds, rosters for both teams, series history and news and notes on the teams.

Tonight is Andre Tippett Night.  The team has been honoring him all weekend and have had his Hall of Fame bust on display at The Hall at Patriot Place.

Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees spoke to media this week and he doesn’t think the defense has been as bad as it seems.  He was in San Diego for the game, right?

Getting to know…offensive lineman Oliver Ross.

After practice on Saturday the Patriots upgraded three players from doubtful to questionable they were: LB Eric Alexander, WR Kelley Washington and CB Jonathan Wilhite. Washington and Alexander missed the last two games with injuries, while Wilhite was suffering during the week from flu-like symptoms.

Right now it’s possible that both RB Laurence Maroney and RB LaMont Jordan may miss their second consecutive games as they were remained doubtful along with DL Jarvis Green and OL Nick Kaczur.

Denver WR Brandon Stokley may not play Monday night because of a recent concussion. And at least one member of the Denver media doesn’t think the risk is worth it and that he should sit out this week.

Broncos QB Jay Cutler says turnovers have hurt the Denver offense recently.

When it comes to the passing game, the Patriots are coming up short.

In case you missed it, injured Patriots QB Tom Brady issued a statement to the fans this week.

After losing Brady the Patriots are still looking for consistency this season.

Celtics Say Goodbye To Darius Miles

Darius Miles - NBAE/Getty Images PhotoThe Boston Celtics announced today that they had paired their training camp roster down to 15 players when they waived forward Darius Miles.

“Darius was a model citizen during his time here in Boston. He showed that he still has a lot of basketball left in him,” said Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations/General Manger Danny Ainge.

Miles was facing a 10 game suspension at the start of the season for failing a drug test at an unknown time. Miles will still have to serve his suspension if he signs with another NBA club.

He was also coming off of microfracture surgery on his knee. Plus he was the only member of the Celtics without a guaranteed contract.

He played in 6 preseason games for the Green and average 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds.

Boston Red Sox ALCS News & Notes – 10/20

Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays 2008 ALCS

Once again, I’d like to offer up my congratulations to the Tampa Bay Rays for making it to their first World Series.

So does this loss sting for the Boston Red Sox. Of course it does. They set a goal of getting back to the World Series and didn’t quite get there. Over time, the Red Sox had their chances to get there but they fell behind 3-1 in the ALCS to the better team in the Rays. As we all should know, the Red Sox never give up and didn’t as they got themselves back to having a chance of competing for a second straight World Series title.

Does this loss hurt? Of course it does. But I for one am proud of this team. We saw a new crop of youngsters step it up when it mattered most in Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie. We saw the Red Sox battle through adversity all season with the various injuries to Josh Beckett, David Ortiz, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Mike Lowell, Julio “E-6” Lugo and some members of the bullpen. Even with those key losses, we saw others step up their games.

Will it take a while to get over this loss. Of course it will. But when you take a look at things, the future is bright. We have some key good youngsters ready to step up and we should have everyone healthy to start the season. So once you’re done grieving for 2008, let’s look forward to 2009 and seeing the Red Sox get back to the ultimate stage in baseball, the World Series.

Jon Lester would love to take the pitch to Willy Aybar back if he could.

If the Rays thought Boston fans were bad, wait til they get to Philadelphia.

It was a rare taste of failure in the postseason for David Ortiz.

Matt Garza demonstrated some grit as he kept the Red Sox hitters at bay last night.

Was last night the final time we’ll see Jason Varitek in a Red Sox uniform?

You can’t say the Red Sox didn’t go down fighting.

Sadly enough, only televisions crews met the Red Sox at Fenway when they returned home.

Jacoby Ellsbury said the Red Sox played with heart last night.

Dan Roche of WBZ-TV said it was a tough ending to the season.

The Boston Globe scribes have their video roundups of the game.

Here are the postgame transcripts from Terry Francona, Joe Maddon and Matt Garza.

As for us, we’ll still be here in the offseason bringing you the news and other thoughts as the Red Sox now have to prepare for 2009 instead of defending their title on Wednesday night.

For more playoff slices of Boston Red Sox goodness, head over to the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Hartford Courant and Providence Journal websites.

And if you must see what the enemy papers are saying you can check out the Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times websites.

Garza Pitches Rays To World Series

Dustin Pedroia can't bear to watch what's going on.

Matt Garza outdueled Jon Lester and the Tampa Bay Rays bullpen made it hold up as they went to beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 to earn their first ever berth in the World Series. The Rays and Phillies will kick things off on Wednesday night on FOX.

David Price was back on in the 9th inning and walked Jason Bay to start things off. Price rebounded to strike out Mark Kotsay and Jason Varitek. Jed Lowrie pinch-hit for Alex Cora and Price got him to hit a groundball to Akinori Iwamura who stepped on second to start the celebration in front of 40,473 at Tropicana Field.

Jon Lester gave it his all tonight but it just wasn't good enough.

Jon Lester gave it his all tonight but it just wasn't good enough.

Jon Lester was outstanding tonight for the Red Sox and kept pace with Garza. Lester went 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 8. Hideki Okajima struck out 1 in his inning of relief.

Garza gave up 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks while fanning 9 Red Sox hitters in 7+ innings of work. David Price worked the final 1 1/3 innings for the save. Garza picked up ALCS MVP honors for winning 2 of the 4 games for the Rays. Maybe he should be called Big Game Garza since James Shields definitely didn’t live up to that billing.

Dustin Pedroia got the Red Sox out in front early on when he hit a 1-out fastball into the seats in left field.

Lester sent down the first 9 Rays hitters he faced before an Iwamura single to start the 4th inning. He struck out B.J. Upton and got Carlos Peña to ground into a fielder’s choice with Iwamura out at second. Evan Longoria followed with a double that scored Peña all the way from first base to tie the game at 1.

Willy Aybar led off the 6th with a double and stayed there when Dioner Navarro reached on an infield single to short. Rhode Island’s Rocco Baldelli gave the Rays a 2-1 lead as his single scored Aybar from second. After that, Lester settled down and got the 3 outs in the inning.

The Red Sox had a good chance to score in the 7th inning.
