The Line/Prediction

As of Wednesday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports is Patriots -7. The over/under is 43.5 .

My prediction is Patriots 28, Rams, 17.  Give the points and take the over. I am 1-5 against the spread and 4 for 6 on calling the over/under in 2008.

The Patriots are reporting the game as a sell out. It is the 155th consecutive sellout dating back to the 1994 season opener. The record includes preseason, regular season and playoff games.

Tailgating

Here’s a bunch of different tailgating recipes from Tailgaiting America. There’s something there for everyone and every type of meal or snack. I’ve tried some of the recipes and they’re very good and for good measure here is one of my own.

And with tailgating many people enjoy some adult beverages. With that in mind check out Drink Nation for how to make all sorts of great drinks. You can look things up by name, ingredient(s) or by theme.

Whether it’s at the game, a bar or someone’s house moderation is always the key to a great time. Please don’t drink and drive and designate a sober driver. Remember You Drink, You Drive, You Lose.

In Case of Emergency, Break Glass

Or just hit someone into it as you’ll see here when Boston Bruins left wing Milan Lucic crushes Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mike Van Ryn and breaks the glass during the Maple Leafs 3-2 win over the Bruins on Thursday night.

And yes I know we don’t cover hockey here hardly at all but this is a great hit whether you’re a hockey fan or not.

There were four fans who were injured, 2 of which had to go to the hospital for the cuts they suffered.

Rob Lunn Has Some Advice For Us

Rob LunnIf you haven’t checked out UConn Huskies defensive lineman Rob Lunn’s blog, Thoughts From a Fat White Guy, you are missing some great stuff. Yesterday, Lunn offered up some valuable advice for the men in the world.

If your girlfriend ever tells you she is comfortable with you farting in front of her. Approach this situation with caution (extreme caution if you are 285lbs+). Lets chalk it up to me taking one for the “team”. Don’t do it. It will only end badly (“the type of fart that could end a marriage…”)

Ummm either that’s TMI (too much information) or a thank you is in order?????

XL Center To Host Big East Women’s Tournament Through 2011

XL CenterThe Big East Conference announced on Thursday that they have signed a 2-year extension with the XL Center in Hartford, CT keeping the Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament there through 2011.

There had been speculation that it could have been moved to Mohegan Sun but for now it stays in Hartford.

“I’m excited for people at the XL Center. I know how much it means to them,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “I think the people there will do an awful lot to make the building the best place to have a tournament in the country. Obviously, the last couple of years, there have been some improvements, but there need to be a lot more for our fans and for the league.

“I think the time people need to wait in line for concessions and the general appearance of the place, the locker rooms, the meeting rooms, could be improved. The court itself is much better. But there is a lot of stuff behind the scenes that are equally important. When you travel to other arenas around the country you see a big gap between what the XL Center can provide and what other places have. There are many great facilities around the nation that players and fans have grown accustomed to. But its still the best place to hold the tournament.”

Like Geno said, the XL Center isn’t the greatest place in the world but it’s still the best place right now to hold the tournament. As long as UConn is good, the Big East Women’s Tournament will always get decent numbers. And for the Big East, that means good revenue dollars.

Randy Edsall Denies Syracuse Rumors

Randy EdsallOn Wednesday, the New York Times reported that Syracuse had hired a search firm to help them look for a new  coach even though their coach, Greg Robinson, hasn’t been fired yet. Syracuse has denied hiring the firm but in the article it says that they have reached out to UConn head coach Randy Edsall to gauge his interest.

Edsall is a 1980 Syracuse graduate and began his coaching career at Syracuse staying there for 11 seasons. So it’s not surprising that the Orange are expressing interest in him. His agent Gary O’Hagan wouldn’t confirm whether or not Edsall had spoken to anyone.

Well Edsall made it clear today during his press conference that he hasn’t been contacted by anyone.

“I don’t deal in speculation and I just want you to know and everybody to know I haven’t been contacted by any college, any university, the NFL, any person or people regarding and jobs,” Edsall said. “End of story.”

Edsall just signed an extension after the 2007 season that will keep him in Storrs until at least 2013.

I honestly don’t see why Edsall would want to leave and rebuild another program. He’s done a great job here at UConn and as he said last year, there’s still things to accomplish at UConn.

Editor’s note: I didn’t want this to get buried in tomorrow’s game preview.

Breaking News: Morris Out 2-3 Weeks

breaking news

According to a NFL source New England Patriots running back Sammy Morris will miss 2-3 weeks of action with a knee injury he suffered Monday night against Denver.

Running back LaMont Jordan is also expected to miss his 3rd consecutive game with a calf injury on Sunday as well. And with Laurence Maroney now on the injured reserve, and done for the season, that leaves New England with three healthy backs in Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Heath Evans for Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams.

Patriots Bitch Slap ESPN

Tom Brady - Sox & Dawgs file photo

Earlier today starting in the morning Sports Center with Hannah Storm (Ed. Note: MILF) and Josh Elliott a report was ran with ESPN reporter Wendi Nix that the New England Patriots were upset with Tom Brady and his family for not following their wishes and having his ACL surgery done in Boston instead of in California. Nix supposedly got this information from speaking withe Patriots. And the story contains this information:

The Patriots, as an organization, are upset with the situation because they were clear that they wanted Brady’s surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston, sources told ESPN.

Instead, Brady opted to have the surgery in California by a doctor his family preferred, and now there are major problems. Brady was supposed to be back in New England by now, but a timeline for his return remains unclear.

Well now the organization is firing back, once again at ESPN, for shoddy reporting and issued the following statement:

“Today, ESPN cited an unnamed source who supposedly expressed the feelings of the Patriots ‘organization.’ This unsubstantiated report does not represent the team’s views whatsoever. We have supported Tom Brady one hundred percent from day one of this process and will continue to do so. We issued a statement last Saturday expressing our complete organizational support for Tom. That support includes all aspects of the process. Unfortunately, our statement was not mentioned or referenced in ESPN’s report. Today, we reiterate our total support for Tom as he recovers from his injury.”

In the early evening edition of Sports Center, it appears that ESPN and Nix have toned down their original statements.

It’s just another part of the ongoing discourse between tWWL and the Patriots organization.  It goes back to Tom Jackson’s “they hate their coach” comment in 2003, the unfair reporting of the “SpyGate” controversy and the fact that ESPN ran with the discredited Boston Herald walk through story when they themselves had been unable to confirm it.

I like when organizations hand it back to ESPN and call them out.  They think they can do no wrong when in fact it’s just another case of shoddy reporting.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 10/23

During the afternoon yesterday, the Boston Red Sox announced that Luis Alicea wouldn’t be returning as first base/infield coach. For Alicea, it was a big surprise.

“He (Francona) just told me they were going to make changes and I was one of the changes,” said Alicea. “I’ve received about a hundred calls today and everyone’s surprised. I’m surprised.”

“If there was anything else, I don’t have an answer. I had some goals when I arrived here and I think we were able to accomplish all of them.”

“I was proud to wear the Red Sox uniform,” said Alicea, who had been promoted from the Sox minor league system before the 2007 season and had also played second base for the Red Sox during his playing career. “My experiences there will make me a better coach in the future. I was able to go to Japan, win a World Series with a great group of guys. We all worked together. I think the players responded to everything I tried to do with them.”

Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe takes a look at who the Red Sox might go after during the offseason.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald has his Red Sox postseason report card.

Scott Boras outlined why Jason Varitek is still an elite catcher.

It turns out that not only did Josh Beckett play hurt but also Jed Lowrie, who had a sprain and non-displaced fracture in his left wrist.
