Dustin Pedroia Wins AL MVP

He did it folks! He did it!!

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was named American League MVP this afternoon by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Pedroia is just the third person, Cal Ripken and Ryan Howard are the others, to be named MVP and Rookie of the Year. Fred Lynn (1975) and Ichiro Suzuki (2001) won both in the same year.

Pedroia is the first second baseman in Red Sox history to win the award and is the first AL MVP for the Red Sox since Mo Vaughn won it in 1995. He is the 10th AL MVP for Boston since 1931.

He finished second in batting average this season hitting .326, had 17 home runs, 83 RBI and 20 stolen bases. He led the league in runs scored with 118 and had 54 doubles.

This is the third postseason honor for Pedroia as he was awarded a 2008 Gold Glove and won the AL Silver Slugger Award at second base.

Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins finished second in the voting and Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis finished third.

Here is how the writers voted for the AL MVP. Each city’s writers got two votes. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News left Pedroia off his ballot entirely.

Paw Prints The Daily Roundup

The biggest news of the day yesterday for the UConn Huskies was that head football coach Randy Edsall has taken his name out of the running for the Syracuse Orange opening. Steve and I both agree that until someone not named Randy Edsall signs a contract to coach the Orange, that he will still be a candidate whether he wants to be or not.

Chip Malafronte of the New Haven Register, Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant and John Silver of the Journal Inquirer have their thoughts about Randy Edsall and the Orange opening.

Jeff Jacobs of the Hartford Courant says if Randy Edsall left for Syracuse it would be a demotion.

Mike DiMauro of the New London Day has a look at what the message boards are saying about Randy Edsall.

In The Red Zone – 11/18

Hard to believe it’s been five days since the Patriots played on Thursday night losing in overtime to the New York Jets, 34-31.  The game wasn’t without excitement though as Matt Cassel led the Patriots back from deficits of 24-6 and 31-24 to end up tied with just 0:01 left on the game clock when Randy Moss made of most fantastic catches I’ve ever seen occur on a football field.  The only one’s I can think of off the top of my head are David Tyree in last years Super Bowl, Lynn Swann in the Super Bowl and Marvin Harrison’s one hander in Foxboro a few years back.  In his second season here Moss has had some great one’s and hey there maybe even be one from last year that was better but none of them had the pressure of that catch and that’s what makes it his best in a New England uniform.

In case you want to see some highlights of the game from the Jets game here is the video package from Patriots.com

The bug guy, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, made an appearance on Patriots Friday last week after the overtime loss.

Is Tim Graham of ESPN.com writing his columns while he is high?  No Seriously.

“The Joker” says Matt Cassel has shed all doubt and has arrived and that LB Jerod Mayo is putting up some big numbers.  Sit down folks, the rookie from Tennessee led the league in tackles heading into Sunday’s games.

Mike Reiss of the Globe tells us the players were given the weekend off after two games in five days.

The Globe’s Christopher Gasper says the special teams let the team down.

The ProJo’s Mike McDermott says it looks like Thursday night’s performance earned Matt Cassel a boat load of money from some team next season and beyond.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 11/18

AL MVP? Kevin Youkilis or Dustin Pedroia

Is today the day we will be calling either Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis or second baseman Dustin Pedroia MVP of the American League. Unless it leaks out early, we will know who is named the AL MVP at 2 PM. My money is on Pedroia to win it.

Dan Roche of WBZ-TV caught up with Pedroia on the eve of the announcement of the MVP and talked with him about the postseason, the MVP race, Terry Francona, Kevin Youkilis, his wife Kelli and being a member of the Boston Red Sox. By the way, Pedroia thinks everyone else is boring.

[flash http://ianbethune.com/pedroiafinal.FLV w=425 h=300]

Roche also looks at the stats of Youk and Pedroia.

Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal looks at the season Dustin Pedroia had and why he’s the favorite to win the AL MVP.

James Stewart of WEEI.com looks at all the candidates for MVP and figures that Pedroia should win.

Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald also looks the numbers of Pedroia and Youk.

While a decision is unlikely to come down today, we should find out in the next day or two whether or not the Mariners will name Brad Mills or DeMarlo Hale as their new manager. Of course it could be one of the other candidates as well.

Daisuke Matsuzaka attended the Silk Gala by the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence over the weekend.

Here’s a look ahead at the 2009 Red Sox.

With the Yankees acquiring Nick Swisher from the White Sox, the Red Sox probably won’t have to outbid the Yankees for Mark Teixeira.

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com says Daisuke Matsuzaka has been well worth the $103 million the Red Sox spent to get him.

I’ll be back at 2 PM or earlier if it leaks with the news on who won the AL MVP.

Garnett Suspended

Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett was suspended by the NBA for one game for his conduct in Saturday’s game in Milwaukee when he struck Andrew Bogut in the face.  The league changed the fouls on Garnett and Bogut to Flagrant Foul Penalty One for their actions in the fourth quarter. But it appears only Garnett was suspended.  Bogut earned in ejection for the confrontation because it was his second technical of the game.

Garnett will have to sit out Tuesday’s game at home against the New York Knicks.  Last season Garnett, the unabashed emotional leader for the Green, missed 9 games with an abdominal strain and Boston went 7-2 without him.

UConn Takes Care Of Hartford 99-56

The final score may have shown the No. 2 UConn Huskies won 99-56 but this game was tight through the first 24 minutes. After that it was all Huskies as they used a 33-5 run to put away the Hawks in front of 11,849 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

Kemba Walker goes in for 2 of his career-high 21 points - AP PhotoCraig Austrie and Kemba Walker led the way for the Huskies (2-0) with both posting a career-high of 21 points. Walker added 4 assists starting for the injured A.J. Price. Jerome Dyson continued his good play as he added 18 points and Jeff Adrien chipped in with yet another double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds. Donnell Beverly had a good game off the bench as his 9 points sparked the Huskies in the first half.

The Hawks (0-2) were paced by Morgan Sabia’s 15 points. Joe Zeglinski added 15 points, a team-high 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Jaret Von Rosenberg contributed 9 points and a team-high 5 rebounds.

It took both teams a minute or so to get going as the Hawks got out a 2-0 lead on 2 free throws by Michael Turner. The Huskies then used a 12-2 to take a 12-4 lead. Two free throws by Austrie and a Hasheem Thabeet layup increased the Huskies lead to 22-12. The lead got as high as 11 points before the Hawks cut the lead to 5 points at 34-29 with 2:39 to play. The Huskies closed out the half with a 7-3 run to take a 12 point lead into the locker room.

The Hawks used a 12-4 run to start the half to cut the lead to 45-44 with 16:39 to play but that was it for the Hawks as it was all UConn the rest of the way as the Huskies would outscore them 54-12.

Early on the Huskies had trouble with the zone from Hartford but once things started clicking for the Huskies, they looked like the team everyone thought they would be even without Price leading them. Walker showed tonight that he can lead the team with his speed and explosiveness with the ball.

Next up for the Huskies is the LaSalle Explorers in the first round of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Friday night at 6 PM. The game will be televised on My-TV9 here in Connecticut.

Wheatley Placed On IR

breaking news

The New England Patriots have placed rookie CB Terrence Wheatley on the season ending injured reserve with a wrist injury he suffered against Indianapolis.  It was reported last week that Wheatley had surgery on torn ligaments in the wrist.

TE Tyson DeVree was activated from the practice squad to take Wheatley’s roster spot and the team signed rookie LB Darrell Robertson to the practice squad.

DeVree was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent and had been a member of the Patriots’ practice squad since September 17.   He finished his college career at the University of Colorado (2006-07) after transferring from Western Michigan (2003-04) following his sophomore year.

Robertson was originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie free agent following the 2008 NFL Draft and was released by the Cowboys on August 30th.  Shortly thereafter he was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League and saw playing time in two games.
