Pictures From Mel Thomas Book Signing In East Haven

Mel Thomas "Heart of a Husky"Last night, I had the good fortune of heading over to the Irish-American Community Center in East Haven, CT to purchase Mel Thomas’ book “Heart of a Husky” and have it personally autographed. It also gave me and hundreds of other UConn Huskies fans a chance to meet Mel.

From what I could tell, Mel is a very nice person. She was engaging with all of the fans and even stopped to take pictures with people. Unfortunately, the one with me didn’t come out too well. She did tell me I was pretty tall though (I’m 6’4, she’s 5’9″).  I was able to chat with Mel briefly and congratulated her on the success of the book and wished her well in Ireland and towards her goal of playing in the WNBA.

The Irish-American Community Center is a very nice place but it was hard to get pictures. But what pictures I was able to get, I’ll share with you here. Hope you enjoy them.

Georgetown Upsets UConn In Big East Opener

Jeff Adrien, center, hangs his head after a stinging 74-63 to Georgetown Monday night at the XL Center while Jerome Dyson, left, and Kemba Walker stare at the scoreboard - Hartford Courant Photo

Nobody ever expected the No. 2 UConn Huskies to go through this season undefeated. Nobody also expected the Huskies to play like absolute crap in their Big East opener tonight. And one day, they will learn how to beat a team that plays primarily zone against them.

The No 8. Georgetown Hoyas got off to a big lead at the start of the game and were able to wear down the Huskies as they won 74-63 in front of 16,294 at the XL Center in Hartford, CT in the Big East opener for both teams.

The Huskies fall to 11-1 (0-1 Big East) while the Hoyas improve to 10-1 (1-0 Big East).

UConn coach Jim Calhoun calls for timeout late in the second half, but by then the Hoyas had built a double-digit lead in a game they would win by 11 points - Hartford Courant PhotoThe Hoyas got out to a 15-1 lead and then 18-3 as UConn had turned the ball over 5 times and missed their first four shots. It was not pretty as Jim Calhoun had to call two timeouts in the first 5 minutes. UConn was able to start to come back a little when the Hoyas switched from a zone defense to man-to-man. The Huskies got as close as 4 points twice during the first half but went into the locker room trailing 36-27.

Georgetown got a three pointer to start the second and then went without a field goal  for the next 4:54 during which UConn went on a 12-3 run to cut the lead to 3 points. With the score 49-45, the Hoyas put together a 7-0 run and never looked back from there. Every time it looked like UConn had a chance to come back, the Hoyas would make a shot and then forced some turnovers and just like that the lead swelled to 17 and the XL Center faithful started heading to the exits.

DaJuan Summers led the Hoyas with a game-high 18 points. Talented freshman Greg Monroe had 16 points as did Chris Wright. Austin Freeman chipped in with 13 points and added 6 rebounds.

Jim Calhoun had this to say after the game:

I want to congratulate Coach Thompson for coming in here and giving us a lesson on how to play basketball with enthusiasm, execution and energy. We got beat by a solid 20 points. I really want to thank our fans for trying to help bring it back into a game – they seemed to want it more than we did.

The Huskies were led by A.J. Price’s 16 points. Jeff Adrien added 15 points and freshman Kemba Walker’s first taste of Big East basketball saw him net 14 points. Hasheem Thabeet was a non-factor on the offensive end as he had just 4 points but he pulled down 7 boards and had 7 blocked shots.

It was a brutal performance by the Huskies tonight as they just never really got things going tonight. They lacked heart as the crowd seemed more into the game than they did.

The Huskies will need to regroup now as they will take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday night at Gampel Pavilion at 7 PM. I’ll tell you one thing, I wouldn’t want to be at practice for the rest of the week.

Report: Red Sox Tried To Get Hanley Ramirez From Marlins

Hanley Ramirez back with the Red Sox?: No, not at all but according to Tom Verducci and Jon Heyman, the Boston Red Sox asked the Florida Marlins about shortstop Hanley Ramirez. They say the talks have ended after an agreement could not be reached.

The Marlins were said to be most interested in a center fielder, and discussions apparently centered on Boston’s promising youngster Jacoby Ellsbury, talented pitching prospect Clay Buchholz and others in a package for Ramirez, who began in Boston’s organization.

Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 12/29

Boston Red Sox While we wait for the Brad Penny and Josh Bard signings to become official, let’s take a look at what it means for the Boston Red Sox and then look at some other news and happenings.

Personally I like the signing of Penny. If he stays healthy, hopefully he can put up something close to the  numbers to he had in 2007 when he went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA. If he could 10-12 wins and have around a 3.50 ERA I think anyone would take that from. The key in all this is that he needs to stay healthy. He had some shoulder issues last year but hopefully with the program the Red Sox have for shoulders, he’s able to get past all of that.

What I like about the signing of Penny as well is the fact that it makes the Red Sox bullpen stronger as now there will be no talk of Justin Masterson going to the rotation. The back end of the rotation will more than likely be Jonathan Papelbon, Masterson, Ramon Ramirez, Hideki Okajima and Manny Delcarmen. I’ll take that any day of the week.

The Bard signing is making sure they have at least one catcher with some MLB experience. Do I see him as the everyday starter. No, I don’t.  I think the Red Sox will either trade for or sign a catcher that can handle the every day duties. More than likely Bard will get another chance to catch Tim Wakefield this season. Let’s just hope he does better than he did in 2006.

When the new Red Sox spring training site is built in Lee County, it won’t be the first mini-Fenway.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald has a look back at the great 8 of 2008 and a look ahead to 2009 for the Red Sox.

While the Yankees have spent a ton of money this offseason, Theo Epstein has stuck to his game plan.

Jack Connors, who was thought to have interest in buying the New York Times interest in the Red Sox, is not interested in buying the NYT’s share of the Red Sox or the Boston Globe for that matter.

And if you hadn’t heard this already, Mark Teixeira never really wanted to play in Boston.

Happy New Year! Oh By The Way You’re Fired!

Rod Marinelli, Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini - AP & Reuters Photos

The end of the NFL season is upon us now so that means only one thing. It’s firing time for coaches whose teams underperformed or didn’t make the playoffs.

First up on the list is Rod Marinelli. He was fired by the Detroit Lions today after guiding the team to an 0-16 record. You can’t really fault him though because it was actually Matt Millen (already fired) who gave him crap for players to work with. Marinelli was 10-38 in 3 seasons with the Lions.

Second up on the list is former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. He was canned today by the Cleveland Browns after the finished with a 4-12 mark. Crennel was 24-40 in 4 seasons with the Browns.

Third up on the list is another former Patriots defensive coordinator, Eric Mangini. He was promoted to defense coordinator of the Patriots when Crennel left and was there one year before being named head coach of the New York Jets. He was fired today after failing to lead the Jets to the playoffs. Mangini was 23-26 (0-1 playoffs) in 3 seasons.

The Browns have expressed interest in former Steelers head coach and current CBS analyst Bill Cowher but he has said he’s not interested in the position but hasn’t returned out a return to coaching in 2009.

The Browns are also asking the Patriots for permission to speak to Patriots vice president of personnel Scott Pioli about their opening GM position after Phil Savage was fired on Sunday. Pioli can leave the Patriots if he is offered final authority on personnel decisions something he doesn’t have with the Patriots. Bill Belichick handles the final decisions for the Pats.

And in some good coaching news, Mike Singletary had the interim tag removed from his title and is now the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. Singletary took over for Mike Nolan who was canned after 7 games and led the 49ers to a 5-4 record. For that, he was rewarded with a 4 year contract.

Orlovsky Makes Pro Football Hall of Fame….

Detroit Lions fans hold a sign reading "0-16" during the first half of an NFL football game between the Lions and the Green Bay Packers - AP Photo

for all the wrong reasons as the Detroit Lions finished the season at 0-16. They are the first team to finish a season 0-16 and just the second overall in the history of the NFL to be winless. The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished the season 0-14.

Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky (6) walks off the field after the second half of an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers - AP PhotoDan Orlovsky, the former UConn Huskies QB, did everything he could to help the Lions avoid the 0-16 mark as he helped the Lions rally to tie the game in the 3rd quarter and get within 3 points midway through the 4th quarter. His interception late in the game sealed their fate though. Orlovsky was 22/45 for 225 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 INTs.

“It can’t do anything but motivate you,” Orlovsky said. “I don’t ever want to be a part of this again. We haven’t won since, November of ’07, maybe? I don’t even know the last time we won a game.”
