After the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team lost to Stanford last Monday, you almost had to feel bad for whomever they were playing next. Why?
It’s because you knew they were going to bring their “A” game.
Well, that team turned out to be the Creighton Bluejays and they didn’t stand a chance as UConn beat them 96-60 in front of 7,123 at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 2-1 while the Bluejays drop to .500 at 2-2 on the young season.
UConn was led by Breanna Stewart’s double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Kia Nurse made her first career start in place of Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, who missed the game with flu, and had 22 points and four rebounds.
Morgan Tuck also made her first start and had a great all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Gabby Williams added 11 points with Moriah Jefferson adding 10 points and a game-high six assists. Kiah Stokes added 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
The reigning Big East Women’s Player of the Year, Marissa Janning, led Creighton with 15 points. Alexis Akin-Otiko added 12 points while Brianna Rollerson had a team-high five rebounds.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday night when they’ll take on the College of Charleston Cougars in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Ft. Myers, FL.
