In the Red Zone – Belichick’s Wallet Is A Little Bit Lighter

SOX & Dawgs - In the Red Zone

Steve’s on vacation for a bit so I’ll be bringing you the Patriots news for a few days.

If you hadn’t heard by now, there was some sort of scandal with the Patriots and a video cameraman being caught at the Jets game last week. Then you had Bill Belichick’s cryptic apology where he apologized but didn’t. It was more of a Texas two-step around an apology.

Rumors had been the Patriots would probably lose a draft pick or two as punishment and that Belichick would be suspended for some games. Well that was certainly not the case on Thursday when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell handed down the punishment.

Goodell fined Belichick $500,000 and the Patriots organization $250,000. The Pats will also lose their 1st round draft pick if they make the playoffs and their 2nd and 3rd round picks if they don’t. However, the Patriots will not lose a first round draft pick obtained from San Francisco in the trade for Randy Moss from Oakland.

Some excerpts from Goodell’s letter to the Patriots:

“This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,” Goodell said in a letter to the Patriots.

Goodell said he considered suspending Belichick but didn’t “largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension.”

But it said the commissioner believed penalties should be imposed on the club because “Coach Belichick not only serves as the head coach but also has substantial control over all aspects of New England’s football operations. His actions and decisions are properly attributed to the club.”

Belichick also issued a statement in response to the punishment and said this will be the last time he comments about the situation.

I accept full responsibility for the actions that led to tonight’s ruling. Once again, I apologize to the Kraft family and every person directly or indirectly associated with the New England Patriots for the embarrassment, distraction and penalty my mistake caused. I also apologize to Patriots fans and would like to thank them for their support during the past few days and throughout my career.

As the Commissioner acknowledged, our use of sideline video had no impact on the outcome of last week’s game. We have never used sideline video to obtain a competitive advantage while the game was in progress.

Part of my job as head coach is to ensure that our football operations are conducted in compliance of the league rules and all accepted interpretations of them. My interpretation of a rule in the Constitution and Bylaws was incorrect.

With tonight’s resolution, I will not be offering any further comments on this matter. We are moving on with our preparations for Sunday’s game.

So now that’s all said and done, can we get down to the business of kicking the Chargers’ asses on Sunday night.

Cabrera & Trembley Suspended For Their Actions

In two separate incidents, the Orioles’ Daniel Cabrera was suspended 6 games and manager Dave Trembley was suspended 3 games. Both were fined undisclosed amounts as well.

Cabrera was suspended by MLB for throwing behind the head of Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia after being called for a balk. He seemed to be upset with Coco Crisp at the beginning of the inning when Coco tried to bunt his way on. Coco eventually reached base and when he got to third. When Cabrera was getting ready to throw a pitch, he was running back and forth down the third base line. As Cabrera was getting ready to throw a pitch and he stopped and looked at third and was called for the balk.

Cabrera has appealed his suspension and will able to pitch until MLB hears the appeal. Here is the video of that incident courtesy of Texy from Center Field.

Trembley was suspended for his tirade during last night’s Orioles/Angels game. On a close play at second base, Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick received the throw from Orlando Cabrera and was visibly off the bag before he threw to first. The runner at second was called out while Jay Payton beat the throw to first. Trembley went out to argue and was ejected by Paul Emmel. After his ejection, Trembley went over past second base and used his spikes to draw a line where he thought Kendrick was standing. Before he walked back to his dugout, he made a gesture as to eject the umpire from the game and then went back to the dugout.Trembley began to serve his suspension tonight and will be able to manage again on Sunday. All though I’d have to guess he’ll be managing the game with a cellphone. Just pure speculation on my part.

The Curse of Sam Bowie

Sam Bowie/Greg Oden

Back in 1984, the Portland Trail Blazers had their choice of drafting Sam Bowie or Michael Jordan with the second pick of the NBA draft. They decided to draft Bowie with the pick. Bowie played four injury-riddled seasons with the Blazers and was traded after that while we all know what Jordan has done in his illustrious career.

Fast forward to 2007 if you will. The Trail Blazers had the first pick in the NBA draft and had to choose between Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. At the time it was thought that you couldn’t go wrong with either player.

Well my how just a few short months later time has changed. Oden had his summer league session cut short because of a tonsillectomy. Then he was to go undergo knee surgery to repair some cartilage so he could be ready for the rigors of an 82-game NBA season.

After having the surgery, Oden is now out for his rookie campaign. The surgery found torn cartilage and he had microfracture surgery. Microfracture surgery, which stimulates the growth of cartilage, takes anywhere from 8 months to a year to recover from.

So if Durant goes on to have a better career, is this the Curse of Sam Bowie?

Only time will tell.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/13

Sky at Fenway

Big Papi watching his home runI hope Jon Lester thanked David Ortiz and his bullpen last night for saving him. Lester struggled with his command on all his pitches and departed during the 4th inning with his pitch count at 93. He left trailing 4-3 after the Rays put up 4 in the first. Big Papi got them back in the game with a 3-run blast. After Lester left the game, Julian Tavarez came in and kept things close. Had Tavarez not pitched like he did, the end result could have been different. In the 9th, Big Papi hit a towering fly ball down the right field line that was misjudged by Delmon Young and the ball fell into the second row of seats in right to ignite a frenzy at the Fens as the Sox won in dramatic fashion 5-4. The Sox are off today and before the Yanks get to town, let’s take a look at the headlines and happenings from last night from the Boston and Tampa area media.

O’s Skipper Ejects Umpire

His team may have packed it’s collective bags already but there is still a lot of life left in Orioles manager Dave Trembley. Shortly after being ejected, Trembley showed umpire Paul Emmel where he thought the play happened by scratching his spikes in the dirt and then turned around and ejected Emmel before heading back to the dugout.

One of the funnier moments in an otherwise dismal season for the Orioles and it’s fans.[Hat tip to Steve for the tip]

Señor Papi Es El Hombre

On a night that got off on the wrong foot for the Red Sox, David “Big Papi” Ortiz saved the day with a 2-run walk-off home run against Devil Rays closer Al Reyes to give them a 5-4 win. Big Papi’s 10th walk-off home run of his career allowed the Sox to maintain their 5 game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees. He also drove in all 5 runs on the night with 2 home runs.

Jon Lester started for the Olde Towne team and he got shellacked in the 1st inning. Akinori Iwamura led off with a walk and went to second on a Carl Crawford ground out to Kevin Youkilis at first. The uber-hot Carlos Peña brought home the first run of the night with a single. Peña would come around to score on a B.J Upton home run on a pitch left up in the zone by Lester. Delmon Young provided the second out of the inning as he grounded out. Brendan Harris followed that up with a double to right. Jonny Gomes delivered Harris to the plate with a single for a 4-0 Devil Rays lead. Lester seemed a little flustered as he issued a walk to Dioner Navarro. However he got out of the inning with a strikeout of Josh Wilson on his 32nd pitch of the inning.

The Sox had a great chance to get back in the game in the 2nd. After a Youk fly out, J.D. Drew singled. D’Rays starter Edwin Jackson got Jason Varitek to fly out for the second out of the inning. Brandon Moss, in for the Jacoby Ellsbury tonight, hit a double moving Drew to third. Jackson then walked Coco Crisp but got out of the inning as Eric Hinske grounded out to second.

Lester didn’t really have his best stuff tonight and struggled with his command. He left his breaking ball up in the zone and he didn’t have his best changeup. He gave up two singles in the 2nd and a walk and a single in the 3rd.

The local nine got back into the game in their half of the 3rd. Julio Lugo led off with a single and stole second while Dustin Pedroia was at the plate. Jackson ended up walking Pedroia setting the stage for Big Papi. He didn’t disappoint as he hit a 3-run homer to cut the Devil Rays lead to one run. Jackson got Youk to strike out then allowed a double to Drew. He did get out of the inning as he struck out Varitek and Moss.

After getting two outs in the 4th, Lester gave up a single to Young and was taken out of the game after 93 pitches in 3 2/3 innings. Julian “Yo Yo” Tavarez came in and got Harris to ground into a fielder’s choice for the final out. In those 3 2/3 innings, Lester gave up 8 hits, 4 runs, 4 walks and he struck out 5.

The Red Sox got some runners on base in the 5th inning but were unable to do anything with them. The same thing in the 6th inning as Coco reached and stole second.

Yo Yo was a godsend for the Red Sox tonight. His awesome outing tonight kept the Sox in the game. He went 3 innings, just allowing one walk. He gave way to Manny Delcarmen with 2 outs in the 7th. Delcarmen got pinch-hitter Greg Norton to hit a comebacker to him for the third out.

Gary Glover took over for Jackson in the 7th and got a little wild after he got the first two outs of the inning. He walked Drew and Youk but Varitek ended the inning with a ground out.

The Giambino doesnt say much eitherNew England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick issued an apology to the league and his team without really saying what he was apologizing for. After taking a page from Jason Giambi’s playbook here’s what the coach had to say:

“Earlier this week, I spoke with Commissioner Goodell about a videotaping procedure during last Sunday’s game and my interpretation of the rules. At this point, we have not been notified of the league’s ruling. Although it remains a league matter, I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected, most of all ownership, staff and players. Following the league’s decision, I will have further comment on the matter”. – Patriots head coach Bill Belichick

Belichick, he's a sharp dressed manBelichick was asked several times to elaborate on the statement refusing in his common matter of fact monotone. After he was finished discussing the Chargers game he was asked what “his interpretation of the rules” were and he left the room without further comment.

As has been written earlier, this isn’t the Patriots first rodeo with these accusations. And this is far from the first time the NFL has a coach who stole the oppositions signal calls. In the late 1980’s Cleveland Browns head coach Marty Schottenheimer routinely sent a scout to watch the signals the opposing teams used to send in plays. He would then watch game film and match the scouting reports to play calls.

Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards said it is still the norm today to do what Schottenheimer did looking for tips on game films and from highlight shows on TV.

ESPN’s John Clayton has a good article online today about the scandal and what actions could possibly happen and how others in the league will react to it and feel about it and how this affects the Patriots.

UPDATE Wednesday September 12, 10:20 p.m.

Accoring to the New York Daily News an insider close to the situation claims that Jets head coach Eric Mangini is the one the who tipped the league to the taping.

From the Daily News:

“[The Jets] knew they did it,” the Daily News wrote, citing a person with knowledge of the situation, who sent the newspaper an e-mail. “They caught the guy a year ago, but couldn’t do anything about it. When Eric came, he said that’s what they used to do. Bill is going to be [ticked] at Eric. He kissed and told.”

Sunday was the fourth game that Belichick and Mangini have coached against each other since Mangini took over the Jets in 2006.
