Patriots Re-Sign Connolly

Dan Connolly #63 of the New England Patriots waits for Tom Brady's signal in the first half against the Dallas Cowboys on October 16, 2011 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Late Thursday afternoon it was learned that the New England Patriots have re-signed C/G/KR Dan Connolly.

Connolly filled in admirably at center for 13 games (11 starts) this season when C Dan Koppen was placed on the injured reserved.  Connolly also has the longest kick off return in NFL history by an offensive lineman when he returned a kick off 71-yards against Green Bay on December 19, 2010.

Connolly, 29, has been with the Patriots since 2007 when he was signed to the practice squad out of Southeast Missouri State after having previously been signed as an undrafted free agent by Jacksonville.

This could mean the end of Koppen, who is also a free agent, as Connolly was looking for starters money on the market.  Rumor was the Patriots preferred to move forward with Connolly instead of Koppen because he is three years younger.  Until the terms of the contract are released we won’t know how the Patriots view Connolly and if there is still a possible return in the making for Koppen.

In addition the team has announced they have signed DT Marcus Harrison.  Harrison made a brief appearance with the team in 2011.  When I say brief, I mean brief, he was signed on a Friday and cut the next day.

Harrison, formerly played for the Chicago Bears, and attended the University of Arkansas.  The 27-year old was drafted in 2008 in the third round and has played in 17 games in three seasons with Chicago.

New England Inks Fanene

In this handout image provided by the NFL, Jonathan Fanene of the Cincinnati Bengals poses for his 2010 NFL headshot circa 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Jonathan Fanene has left the Queen City for the chance at a title in Foxboro with the New England Patriots.  Fanene’s deal is reportedly for three years and $12 million with a signing bonus of just under $4 million.

Fanene, is 6-foot-4, 290 lbs. and 29 years old and a native of American Somoa.  He had 6.5 sacks in 2011 and 6 sacks in 2010.

He is a legit run-stuffing end who can rush the passer from either inside or outside, and he is versatile and physical.

Reports Indicate Slater to Stay a Patriot

Matthew Slater #18 of the New England Patriots stretches before a game against the Washington Redskins at FedExField on December 11, 2011 in Landover, Maryland.

Slater was the Patriots special teams captain and led the squad in tackles and earned his first Pro Bowl selection.  He also saw some time at wide receiver and is expected to compete for spot as New England’s deep threat option on the outside.

Slater, the son of Football Hall of Fame member Jackie Slater, has played with the Patriots the last four seasons after having played his college ball at UCLA.

Patriots Bring Back White, Koutouvides

The New England Patriots are bringing back their core special teams players from last season as they re-signed LB Tracy White and LB Niko Koutouvides of Plainville CT.

New England Patriots linebacker Niko Koutouvides walks off the field after the Patriots' 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in the NFL Super Bowl XLVI football game, Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, in Indianapolis.White was second on the team last year in special teams tackles behind special teams captain Matthew Slater. White, who is 31 years old, has played with five teams and is entering his third season in New England.  He did contribute toward the end of the season on defense when the injury bug bit the linebacking corps.

Koutouvides was brought in midway through the season to help solidify the special teams when they were having some issues.  He had been with Patriots in training camp after the lockout had ended but didn’t stick with the team at that time.  Apparently he had showed Bill Belichick and his staff enough to think of him when they needed some special teams help.

Patriots Tender Hoyer, Love

Kyle Love #74 of the New England Patriots celebrates after a sack against the Denver Broncos during their AFC Divisional Playoff Game at Gillette Stadium on January 14, 2012 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

On the first day of NFL free agency it is pretty quiet so far along the Foxboro front.  The team did as expected and placed the 2nd round tender on backup quarterback Bryan Hoyer which is worth $1.92 million.  What this means is a team can sign Hoyer to an offer sheet and if New England does not match it the other team only has to surrender a second round pick to the Patriots.

Bill Belichick and staff are gambling that no one will be willing to take that shot on Hoyer who New England really likes.  On the other hand to get a 2nd round pick back would be very good for a player who figures to sign elsewhere next season to pursue a starting job and the team would only get a 3rd round compensatory pick in return in that case.

The Patriots also gave DT Kyle Love his exclusive rights tender and he will now be back for at least another season. An exclusive rights free agent, is a player with two years of less who is not under contract.  If his team makes him an offer at the 3-year veteran minimum salary he has to take it or leave the NFL.  If no offer is made he is a free agent.

There is a high probability that the Patriots will look to give Love a 2-year contract much like they did with Kyle Arrington when he was in this position.  It gives Love a signing bonus and up front money in return for giving up one year of free agency.

There’s also been one unconfirmed rumor that New England is very close to re-signing WR Matthew Slater, their special teams captain and possible deep threat wide receiver.

At of the time of publication the possible signing of Slater has not happened although a few other wide receivers did sign deals last night.  Reggie Wayne went back to a Manning-less Indianapolis, former teammate Pierre Garcon is reportedly Washington bound, Marcus Colston stayed in New Orleans and Vincent Jackson got $55 million over five years from Tampa Bay.

Patriots Needs for 2012

In The Red Zone

The New England Patriots are preparing for the 2012 season already.  The combine is currently underway in Indianapolis, then that is followed by the free agency period starting on March 17.  And it caps with the NFL Draft in April in New York City.

The Patriots need help in some areas, those being wide receiver, pass rusher, linebacker and secondary. I think it’s pretty evident they need a deep threat on the outside.  They need some of what Randy Moss gave them to help open it up more for Wes Welker (if he is still there) and the tight ends.  It also allows Tom Brady to use a weapon he hasn’t been able to unleash as much as he had in the past and that’s the deep ball.

They also need a pass rusher, be it from the line or as a linebacker, they need a guy or group of guys who can terrorize an opponents quarterback on a regular basis.  Andre Carter, who got hurt and finished the season on the IR, and Mark Anderson did a good job this season but they are free agents.  I’d like to see them come back and add a linebacker who can rush.   There’s also the possibility that LB Jermaine Cunningham going into his third season could finally become that player.

In the secondary they do have some help coming from IR in CB Ras-I Dowling who missed most of his rookie season with a hip injury.

I do see them pursuing a few free agents and some of the potential good fits include WR Brandon Lloyd, who played the last half of the season for new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels in St. Louis.  New England will also have significant interest in WR Mike Wallace of Pittsburgh, as long as the Steelers don’t use the franchise tag on him.

Look for them to look at some secondary help in free agency as well.  This could come in the form of CB Cortland Finnegan of Tennessee and Kansas City’s young CB Brandon Carr; both are among the top defenders available.  There may also be some interest in Oakland S Tyvon Branch, who grew up outside of Syracuse, NY and played his college football at UConn.  New England could be of interest to Branch in being closer to family and friends.

With those needs the team also has its own free agents that need to be considered.  Do they attempt to resign these players or do they let them walk?

To continue reading, please click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Here are the definitions of the free agent types.

UFA – unrestricted free agent, players with 4 or more years of service can sign with any team.

RFA – restricted free agent, players with 3 or more years of service who can sign with any team but original team has right to match the offer.

ERFA – exclusive rights free agent, player with two years of less who is not under contract.  If his team makes him an offer at the 3 year veteran minimum salary he has to take it or leave the NFL.  If no offer is made he is a free agent.

The Patriots free agents are:

QB Brian Hoyer – RFA

RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis – UFA

RB Kevin Faulk – UFA

WR Wes Welker  – UFA

WR Deion Branch – UFA

WR Matthew Slater – UFA

C/G Dan Connolly – UFA

C Dan Koppen – UFA

C/G Ryan Wendell – RFA

DE Andre Carter – UFA

DE Eric Moore – UFA

DE Shaun Ellis – UFA

DE Mark Anderson – UFA

DT Gerard Warren – UFA

DT Kyle Love – ERFA

LB Gary Guyton – UFA

LB Tracy White – UFA

CB Antwaun Molden – UFA

S James Ihedigbo – UFA

S Nathan Jones – UFA

S Bret Lockett – ERFA

Out of the free agents this is what I see the team doing.

Welker is tagged as the franchise player and gets the one-year average value salary unless he and the team negotiate a long-term deal before the league deadline.

Faulk is most likely going to retire and will not return.  If he does play in 2012 it’s only in New England.

Green-Ellis, Branch, Connolly, Koppen, Molden, Ihedigbo and Jones I see being re-signed and remaining in Foxboro.

Carter, Anderson and Warren all want to stay I’d imagine the feeling is mutual as long as the price is right.

Slater could be enticed by another team with the prospect of playing wide receiver.  He is pretty valuable to the Patriots as a special teams player but could possibly stay and be given a long look as a deep threat on the outside.

White I see returning to play special teams, where he excels, and fill in as a linebacker.

Moore, Ellis and Guyton I don’t see hanging around.  At least Guyton and Ellis were in the doghouse at some point during the season and will probably be allowed to walk away without an offer.  Moore will most likely seek more playing time elsewhere.

Hoyer will stay as Tom Brady’s back up until he becomes a UFA, then Mallett moves up.

Wendell I don’t see sticking around he can probably play more and get paid more on a rebuilding team.

Love is a guy I really think they give the 3 year veteran offer to, he adds a lot of depth to the defensive line and started a lot this past season.  They may even look to do a longer contract with him and lock him up for say 3 years at suitable money.

Lockett is guy who I think is gone and will not get a ERFA offer from the team.  He has had some off field incidents in the last year or so with his rap music and the whole Kim Kardashian incident, very un-Patriot like.  He’d have been cut long ago if he wasn’t hurt.

Brady Suffers His Largest Loss

Tom Martinez and Tom Brady

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has 41 losses on the football field in his career, but the loss he suffered tonight may be the largest by far.  Tom Martinez, Brady’s personal quarterback guru, passed away today at age 66 after a heart attack suffered during a dialysis session.

Brady recently used his status to help get the information out about how important organ donation is and that his mentor Martinez was in need of a kidney transplant on CBS’ 60 Minutes.

Martinez, who lived in California, was in need of the transplant due to diabetes.  He has been the 2-time NFL MVP’s quarterback coach since his youth football days in the San Mateo area and the pair talked all the time about Brady’s mechanics and what he needed to improve on.

Recently, Brady teamed up with the Canton, MA based “Matching Donors” organization hoping that his high profile status would spark the donation to help his longtime friend.

Don’t forget it’s easy to become an organ donor, when you renew your drivers license just check the organ donation box or register with your states organ donor registry and talk to your family and make sure they know you are an organ donor.

For more information on organ donation go to organdonor.gov.

Update: Brady posted the following statement on his Facebook page.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my coach, mentor and friend. Coach Martinez’s invaluable assistance and support will never be forgotten and will always have a lasting impact on my life. The time we spent together remain some of my fondest memories. His legacy of commitment, toughness and determination will live on forever.”
