Omar Calhoun Named Big East Freshman of the Week

For the second time this season, UConn Huskies freshman guard Omar Calhoun has been named the Big East Freshman of the Week.

Here's the release from UConn:

STORRS (Feb. 18, 2013) — For the second time this season, UConn freshman guard Omar Calhoun (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week.

Calhoun scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Huskies defeat No. 6 Syracuse, 66-58, on Wednesday at the XL Center. Calhoun hit 3-of-5 three-pointers and 4-of-5 free throws.

On Saturday, the 6-5 freshman scored a team-high 16 points and pulled in a team-high six rebounds in UConn’s 70-61 loss to Villanova at the XL Center. In that game, Calhoun was 9-of-9 from the foul line.

Calhoun also won BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors on Dec. 24 after averaging 19.5 points and shooting 14-of-21 in wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and Fordham.

St. John’s freshman JaKarr Sampson and Villanova freshman Ryan Arcidiacono are the only other players to win multiple BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors this season.

For the season, Calhoun, who has started every game for the Huskies, is averaging 11.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Video: UConn Women Prevent Stringer’s 900th Win

UConn coach Geno Auriemma greets Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer before the game Saturday. Since Rutgers is joining the Big Ten after the season, this may be the last time that they will meet.

UConn Huskies women's basketball head coach Geno Auriemma is a Hall of Fame Coach. So was the coach on the other sidelines Saturday in C. Vivian Stringer who was going for her 900th career win on Saturday.

And while Geno isn't at 900 wins yet, his team made sure Stringer didn't get hers quite yet.

Morgan Tuck had a huge game off the bench with 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Huskies in a 65-45 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in front of 5,378 at The RAC on Saturday afternoon.

UConn improves to 24-1 (11-1 Big East) while the Scarlet Knights fall to 14-10 (5-6).

Stefanie Dolson added 14 points for the Huskies with Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis adding 12 points. Moriah Jefferson had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench. Caroline Doty led UConn with five assists.

UConn played the final 35 minutes of this game without Bria Hartley because of an illness she was battling.

Shakena Richardson was the only member of the Scarlet Knights to hit double figures with 10 points. Syessence Davis added eight points and seven rebounds while Monique Oliver had seven points and six rebounds.

Erica Wheeler led Rutgers with seven rebounds.

Rutgers started out the game with a 14-4 run and that forced Auriemma to pull four of his starters from the game with the exception of Dolson. The Huskies then battled back with an 18-4 run of their own to take a 22-18 lead. The Scarlet Knights would keep it close the rest of the way as they trailed by six points at 33-27 at the break.

UConn came out of the gates quickly to start the second half with a 7-0 run to push the lead to lead to double-digits. That would be the end though for Rutgers as they were never able to get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.

I've been saying this over and over.

The Huskies have needed Tuck and Jefferson to step up their games. And lately, they've been doing just that. If Tuck can stay healthy and continue to do what she's been doing, she'll definitely be a key part down the stretch here for the Huskies.

The same goes for Jefferson who has taken her game to another level since Brianna Banks went down with the ACL injury.

UConn will need what they got from them and more their next time out though.

It's a quick turnaround for the Huskies as they'll host the No.1 Baylor Lady Bears on Monday night at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. Tip is scheduled for 9 p.m.

Video: UConn Men Suffer Letdown In 70-61 Loss To Villanova

UConn players R.J. Evans, and Neils Giffey with coaches George Blaney and Kevin Ollie absorb UConn's loss to Villanova 61-70 at the XL Center in Hartford Saturday.

Coming off such an emotional win over Syracuse earlier in the week, you had to hope the UConn Huskies men's basketball team wouldn't suffer a letdown on Saturday afternoon.

Unforunately that as well as a good game plan from the Villanova Wildcats shutting down UConn's guards happened.

Ryan Arcidianco led Villanova with 25 points, including five three-pointers, as they went on to beat UConn 70-61 in front of 15,165 and a nationally-televised audience on ESPN at the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

The Huskies fall to 17-7 (7-5 Big East) while the Wildcats improve to 16-10 (7-6).

Omar Calhoun led UConn with 16 points, including 9-of-9 from the charity stripe and six rebounds. DeAndre Daniels added 13 points while Niels Giffey came off the bench to score 11 points.

Shabazz Napier battled foul trouble in the first half and tight defense from Villanova the whole game and finished with just two points. However, he did have 10 assists. Ryan Boatright was also a victim of the Wildcats defense and had four points.

Joining Arcidianco in double figures was JayVaughn Pinkston who had 14 points and nine rebounds while James Bell had 11 points. Mouphtaou Yarou finished with a double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds.

UConn found themselves down early with Napier in foul trouble as Villanova went on an 11-0 run. UConn followed with a 10-2 run, including two straight threes from lightly used Leon Tolksdorf to take the lead. The Wildcats battled back and kept it close trailing by only three points att the half.

Villanova kept the game within reach early in the second half before going on an 11-0 run to take a 52-45 lead. The Huskies would get as close as two points the rest of the way. The Wildcats would put the game away late with 13-0 run.

Obviously the emotional letdown was only a part of the reason why the Huskies lost. Frankly it was the guard play of Napier and Boatright.

While Napier did distribute the ball well, him and Boatright couldn't get anything done offensively scoring wise. It's also the first time the Huskies have seen man-to-man defense in a while and that played a huge part because the Villanova players were stuck on the duo like a fly on a fly trap.

UConn had relied on them all season and have had others step up. And while Calhoun, Daniels and Giffey did, it wasn't enough for the Huskies.

UConn is back in action in on Thursday when they'll play their final regular season game at the XL Center. They'll host the Cincinnati Bearcats with tip-off being scheduled for 7 p.m.
