UConn G Rob Nichols (31) does a split to make the save the stuff in attempt by Maine F Will Merchant (28) in the third period at the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

From UConn:

STORRS, Conn. – UConn sophomore Rob Nichols (Dallas, Texas) was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after guiding the Huskies to a win and tie this past weekend with the Maine Black Bears.  Nichols picks up his second HEA defensive player award this season.

Nichols helped the Huskies take three of a possible four points in the league standings this weekend.  The sophomore netminder stopped 70 of the 73 shots he saw over the two games.  On Friday night, Nichols turned away 41 Maine shots, matching his career-high for the third time this season as UConn posted a 2-1 overtime win at Maine.  Nichols made 12 saves in each of the first three periods and stopped another five in the overtime.  On Sunday, Nichols came up with 29 saves as the Huskies skated to a 2-2 tie with the Black Bears at home in the XL Center.

On the year, Nichols has seen action in 25 games posting a 2.32 goals against average with a .929 save percentage.  He ranks fourth in Hockey East and 12th in the nation in save percentage.  He owns a pair of shutouts on the season as well.

Nichols and the Huskies will face the No. 13 nationally ranked Providence Friars this week.  UConn will host the Friars on Wednesday night at the XL Center and then travel to Providence on Saturday night.

UConn looks to sweep season series with Cincinnati Thursday night

The defending champion UConn Huskies haven’t had an easy go of it during the 2014-15 season, as they enter a huge Thursday night clash against the Cincinnati Bearcats in search of a quality win. Neither team has stuck inside the nation’s top-25 rankings, but both have at least four wins inside the American Athletic Conference and are still within striking distance of the top of the conference.

Despite neither team really having the luxury of being able to afford another big loss, Cincinnati Bearcats tickets are a conservative $35 on average (just $6 to get in the door). Considering Huskies tickets are usually around $68 on average, it looks like fans from both sides will get a nice discount when the two take the floor in Cincy on Thursday night. Of course, depending on who is able to squeak out the win, these squads could be headed in very different directions.

Fans looking to attend the game can review information on Cincinnati flights into Cincinnati Airport.  Currently, airline tickets can be found for less than $500 round trip. Hipmunk also has availability on cheap hotels in the greater-Cincinnati area, with rates as low as $65 per night, as well as even cheaper Airbnb options.

The University of Connecticut won the national title in men’s basketball last year, yet it seems like so long ago after a somewhat sluggish 11-7 start. The silver lining is that the Huskies have managed to win four of six tries inside their conference, although dropping a third conference game on Thursday to Cincinnati could end up being extremely damaging. The only big-name win the Huskies have to this point is a 63-59 nail biter over Florida, but with the Gators also struggling, UConn is left looking for more validation.

That validation could easily come on Thursday with a win over the Bearcats, which would give the Huskies a 2-0 sweep of the season series and give them much-needed momentum as they try to pick up steam the rest of the way. UConn was able to get past Cincinnati back on January 10th of this year (62-56), thanks to an elite performance from their guards. Ryan Boatright led the way, putting up 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the tight affair. That game originally helped cap a nice run of five wins in six contests – a feeling the Huskies hope to re-ignite during the rematch.

UConn’s Morgan Tuck Tabbed as The American’s Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After helping the No. 2 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team to wins over Temple and USF by a 38.0 point margin, redshirt-sophomore forward Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, Ill.) has been selected as the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.

UConn F Morgan Tuck (3) goes up strong for a layup in the first half against Temple at Gampel Pavilion. On Wednesday against the Owls, Tuck set a new conference career-high, dropping 24 points on 11-of-12 shooting to go along with seven boards and four assists. She followed up the performance with a 15-point, six-rebound effort against the Bulls on Sunday.

Tuck was previously named Player of the Week on Dec. 8 and earns the Huskies’ fourth overall weekly honor of the season.

Over her last 10 games, Tuck is averaging 15.1 points and has scored at least 20 points in four games during the stretch. At 14.8 points per game, the sophomore is UConn’s second leading scorer and is one of seven Husky players shooting over 50.0 from the field.

As a team, UConn has won 15-straight games and is a perfect 6-0 in The American. The Huskies return to action for a league game against UCF on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on SNY with radio coverage on the UConn/IMG Sports Radio Network.
