Afternoon Red Sox Delight – 8/25

Andrew Miller (L), Alexi Ogando (R)

After another rout last night, the Boston Red Sox look to avoid a split of their four-game series in the finale tonight against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

Today’s first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. and will be broadcast in the Red Sox television market on NESN. If you live in the Rangers broadcast area, you can catch the game on Fox Sports Southwest. If you don’t live in either market, you may be in luck as the MLB Network is also scheduled to have coverage of tonight’s game. And if you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2011 Red Sox Radio Network.

Andrew Miller will toe the slab tonight for the Red Sox in his 10th start (12th appearance) of the season. In his previous 11 appearances (nine starts), Miller is 5-1 with a 4.99 ERA. He has not faced the Rangers this season. In fact, he’s only made one career apperance against them and that was back in 2006 when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Alexi Ogando makes his 25th start as he looks to help his team to a split of the four-game set. In his previous 24 starts, Ogando is 12-5 with a 3.30 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox this year. He has made four career appearances against them though. All of those came in 2010 out of the bullpen in which he was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA (1 ER/4.1 IP).

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/25

David Ortiz(notes) #34 of the Boston Red Sox prepares to bat against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on August 24, 2011 in Arlington, Texas.

Coming into last night’s game, Josh Beckett was getting 3.73 runs of support per game from the Boston Red Sox offense. Before he even stepped on the mound in an eventual 13-2 win over the Texas Rangers, Beckett had already gotten four runs from the offense.

It made you wonder, did the offense forget he was was pitching? Or did he have some “words of encouragement” for the boys to get him some run support?

Whatever the case may be, it was nice to see Beckett get some support and do what he does best. Now hopefully the offense can do the same thing on Friday night to get Tim Wakefield his 200th win finally.

On Tuesday night, Jacoby Ellsbury returned the lineup and the offense exploded. Last night, David Ortiz returned to the lineup and well took the first pitch he saw and lined it for a single. The much maligned Carl Crawford was the hero though for the Red Sox offense last night. Well I should say one of many heroes but he was the main catalyst.

Crawsome finished the night 2-for-3 with 5 RBIs. His two hits were a 2-run double and 2-run homer. His other RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the 5th.

For the second straight night, the every member of the starting nine had at least one hit. Ellsbury led the way with three hits including a two-run homer in the 6th inning. Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and RBIs, including his third home run in two days, and Dustin Pedroia added two hits and two RBIs to the cause as well.

Big Papi finished the night with two hits and Darnell McDonald added two hits as well.

One thing of note is that Ryan Lavarnway made his catching debut in the 8th inning last night. It was thought that he might not see anything behind the plate but obviously with such a big lead, it was a perfect time to get a little experience under his belt.

Obviously besides the win, the best part of the night is the fact that the win got the Red Sox back on top in the AL East. Thanks to former Red Sox OF Coco Crisp, the Oakland A’s beat the New York Yankees last night 6-3 in 10 innings. So be sure to buy Coco a beer if you see him out in Boston over the weekend since the A’s are coming to town.

We’ll be back later today with the lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and more for this evening’s game. But for now enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/24

Jacoby Ellsbury(notes) #2 of the Boston Red Sox steals second base against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on August 23, 2011 in Arlington, Texas.

While all of us backseat managers out there sometimes question the decisions that Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona makes, we do listen to what he has to say about anything and everything. One thing he’s been consistent in saying is that as the Red Sox are a more productive team with Jacoby Ellsbury in and at the top of the lineup.

So after missing three games after being hit by a pitch in Friday night’s game in Kansas City, Ellsbury returned to the lineup against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night and announced his presence with authority.

He led off the game with a single and wasted no time with Marco Scutaro at the plate by stealing second base. He would eventually come around to score on an Adrian Gonzalez two-run homer. And in the 5th inning, he made a great running catch which earned him a tip of the cap from the starter John Lackey. Yes, you read that right.

The boost provided from Ellsbury was just part of a nice offensive night for the Red Sox as they beat the heat and the Rangers 11-5. And with that win coupled with a New York Yankees loss to the Oakland A’s, the Red Sox are back in a tie for first in the AL East.

The offense made sure that Lackey had enough run support (secretly I think Josh Beckett was jealous of it). They scored two runs in each of the first innings and added a single run in the 4th. They put the final touches on the outburt in the 8th with four runs.

It’d been a long time since Gonzo had hit a home run, July 30th to be exact. In that time, he saw Ellsbury pass him in home runs. But with two home runs last night, the 2-run johnson in the 1st and a solo shot in the 4th, he now has 20 on the season and is two behind Ellsbury. Oh and he added another hit as well to finish with three hits to increase his AL-leading average to .346.

Every member of the starting nine had at least one hit last night. Besides Gonzo’s three-hit effort, Jed Lowrie, Ryan Lavarnway and Jarrod Saltalamacchia had two hits each.

Once again, for the most part, Lackey was pretty good at the mound. He hit a rough patch in the 3rd inning when he gave three of the runs back. But with the offensive support he had that little bump in the road didn’t hurt him.

With David Ortiz returning to the lineup tonight, the offense gets a little better. Hopefully they can do what they did last night again tonight in the sweltering heat of Texas.

We’ll be back later today with the lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and more for this evening’s game. But for now enjoy the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox News & Notes – 8/23

C.J. Wilson(notes) #36 of the Texas Rangers prepares to pitch against the Boston Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on August 22, 2011 in Arlington, Texas.

Dating back to the 2010 season, Mike Napoli had homered in his last three appearances against the Boston Red Sox. He had one in his final game against them in 2010 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels and then one each in his two games earlier this season with the Texas Rangers.

Well now let’s make it four games in-a-row as his three-run home run against Erik Bedard was the straw that broke the Red Sox’s back in the Rangers 4-0 win on Monday night.

With the New York Yankees off last night, the Red Sox only lose a ½ game in the standings and sit one game behind for the lead in the AL East. The Red Sox do lead the Tampa Bay Rays by 7.5 games in the AL Wild Card standings.

C.J. Wilson has pretty much owned the Red Sox during his career as a reliever and a starter. Monday night was no different.

While they did work some counts and got his pitch count up, they really couldn’t do anything against him.  He allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out four in 6.2 innings. They definitely didn’t take advantage of their rare chances against him either.

After two base runners reached in the 1st with two outs, Wilson got Jed Lowrie to ground into a fielder’s choice. In the 7th after Lowrie singled and Ryan Lavarnway walked with one out, Wilson ended his night by getting Carl Crawford to ground into a fielder’s choice. Koji Uehara made quick work of Jarrod Saltalamacchia by getting him to ground out.

I must say this. I am quite impressed with Lavarnway’s plate discipline. In all four plate appearances, he went to a full count all four times. He didn’t end up with a hit but did walk two times while striking out.

Mike Napoli(notes) #25 of the Texas Rangers celebrates with Manager Ron Washington #38 after scoring a three-run homerun against the Boston Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on August 22, 2011 in Arlington, TexasHonestly, I don’t think Bedard pitched all that badly. He was hurt by a bad call from the umpire in the 3rd and one bad pitch to Napoli with two strikes in the count in the 6th inning.

With a runner on first base in the 3rd, Ian Kinsler lined one to right field where Josh Reddick made the catch or so we thought. The umpire ruled he trapped it. And of course, the next batter in Elvis Andrus lined a single to bring in the first run of the game for the Rangers.

The big blow though came on a 1-2 count though. After Bedard had gotten strike two on a fastball inside and low, he called Salty to the mound and told him what he wanted. What he wanted to throw was a high fastball. Well that was a mistake as Napoli blasted it out of the park. With the way he had been throwing before that, it’s quite possible this game ends 1-0 and not 4-0.

Against good pitching like the Rangers got on Monday night, it might not have mattered whether or not the Red Sox had Jacoby Ellsbury or David Ortiz in the lineup. The good news though is the Red Sox should get Ellsbury back tonight. At this point any little thing like this can only help.
