Red Sox Re-Sign Rich Hill To Minor League Deal

When Rich Hill was non-tendered by the Boston Red Sox earlier this month, I had said that it wouldn’t surprise me if they re-signed him to a minor league deal. And that’s exactly what has happened.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill, right, is assisted by Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia as he leaves the game with a forearm injury after facing just one batter in the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Chicago White Sox, Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Fenway Park, in Boston.John Tomase of the Boston Herald was the first to learn that the Red Sox have re-signed Hill to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

Hill was having a great season with the Red Sox last season before he blew out of his elbow on June 1st and then underwent Tommy John surgery weeks later. He spent the rest of the season rehabbing with the team and was part of the bullpen band during games.

He made nine appearances for the Red Sox last year, throwing eight innings and striking out 12. In his 15 appearances with the Red Sox between 2010 and 2011, Hill has not allowed a run.

Hill had been the best lefty in the Red Sox bullpen after others failed. One could say the loss of Hill hurt the bullpen a little as no lefty was able to match what Hill was able to do.

While it doesn’t appear he’ll be ready for the start of the 2012 season, I would expect that once Hill is healthy, he’ll be back with the big club and hopefully doing what he’s done in the past out of the bullpen.

No Problems For UConn Women in 93-40 Win Over Fairfield

Given that UConn Huskies women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma had to abruptly end practice on Wednesday, you weren’t quite sure how the team would come out of the gates on Thursday night. Well they made sure he’d be happy with how they responded.

The Huskies put this one away early as they went on to an easy 93-40 win over the Fairfield Stags in front of 8,106 at Gampel Pavilion on campus in Storrs, CT.

UConn finishes the 2011 portion of their schedule at 11-1. The Stags fall to 7-4.

UConn's Stefanie Dolson drives to the basket against Fairfield Thursday night at Gampel Pavillion. Dolson scored 22 points. Tiffany Hayes led the way for the Huskies with 23 points and added five rebounds. Stefanie Dolson had perhaps her finest game of the season with 22 points and pulled down four rebounds. Freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Brianna Banks both had 12 points off the bench while Bria Hartley had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Kelly Faris might not have scored any points but she led the Huskies with eight rebounds and nine assists. For good measure, Caroline Doty added seven assists to go along with her seven points.

Fairfield was led by Desiree Pina who had 12 points. Alexys Vazquez added nine points while Brittany MacFarlane chipped in with eight. MacFarlane and Taryn Johnson led the Stags with three rebounds each.

UConn got out of the gates quickly and into the paint as Dolson scored the first eight points of the game. In fact, Dolson scored 16 of the first 19 points UConn scored.

With the Huskies up 25-14, they used a 9-0 run to make sure the Stags would have no chance of coming back.

Very solid performances all around for the Huskies. Coming off the Christmas break and what happened at practice on Wednesday, this is a good sign. The one thing UConn has lacked all season is an identity. Hopefully this is the start of something good for the Huskies as they prepare to jump back into Big East play.

The Huskies will be back in action next Wednesday night when they’ll host the West Virginia Mountaineers at the XL Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast locally here in Connecticut on CPTV.

Notes and musings:

Fairfield Stags @ UConn Huskies 12.29.11 box score

Here are the postgame quotes from UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and Fairfield head coach Joe Frager.

The 2002 National Championship team was inducted into the Huskies of Honor at halftime. Sue Bird, Ashley Battle and Maria Conlon were among those who made it back.

Former Husky Svetlana Abrosimova was also reinducted into the Huskies of Honor. She had previously been honored but wasn’t able to attend the first time.

The starters for the Huskies were Bria Hartley, Tiffany Hayes, Caroline Doty, Kelly Faris and Stefanie Dolson.

UConn shot 59.4% (38-64) from the floor while the Stags shot 33.3% (16-48).

The Huskies had 26 assists on their 38 made baskets.

UConn was 8-of-18 (44.4%) on three pointers. Fairfield was 8-of-26 (30.8%).

The Huskies were 9-of-14 (64.3%) at the charity stripe.

UConn dominated the glass as they outrebounded Fairfield 46-16.

The Huskies had 28 points off of 18 Stags turnovers. Fairfield had 12 points off of 10 UConn turnovers.

UConn outscored Fairfield 58-2 in the paint and 18-0 on the fast break.

The Huskies had 25 second chance points to just two for the Stags.

Kalish Won’t Be Part of RF Mix to Start 2012

Besides possibly needing a couple of starting pitchers, the Boston Red Sox have a glaring need in right field for the 2012 season.

Ryan KalishOne of the players thought to be in the mix was Josh Reddick but he was part of the trade that got the Red Sox Andrew Bailey and Ryan Sweeney from the Oakland A’s. Sweeney essentially replaces Reddick in the competition in right field.

The others are Darnell McDonald and Mike Aviles. Another player thought to be part of the equation was Ryan Kalish who missed most of the 2011 season with a neck injury.

But Red Sox GM Ben Cherington announced on Thursday that Kalish underwent surgery on his shoulder for a torn labrum in November and won’t be ready for the start of the 2012 season.

The Red Sox won’t get much power out of the candidates they have so you can expect Cherington to be exploring the free agent market for outfielders. I wouldn’t think he gets anyone in a trade but the way this offseason is going you never know.

Red Sox Acquire Andrew Bailey, Ryan Sweeney From Athletics

If you thought that Daniel Bard still might be the closer or in the bullpen when the Boston Red Sox acquired Mark Melancon, you probably had a 50% chance of being right. But after the latest acquisition by GM Ben Cherington, I’d say there’s probably a 5-10% chance that Bard is in the bullpen next season.

Andrew Bailey #40 of the Oakland Athletics high-fives a teammate as he celebrates the victory after the game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on September 25, 2011 in Anaheim, California. The Athletics scored four runs in the ninth inning and Bailey earned a save as the Athletics won 6-5.Cherington made another splash on the trade market on Wednesday when he acquired closer Andrew Bailey and OF Ryan Sweeney from the Oakland Athletics for OF Josh Reddick and minor league 1B Miles Head and RHP Raul Alcantara.

Bailey is a former AL Rookie of the Year (2009) but has been plagued by injuries the past two seasons. However when he’s healthy, he can be one of the better closers in the game. He came off the disabled list on May 29th for the A’s, appearing in 42 games. In those 42 games, he was 0-4 with a 3.24 ERA and 24 saves.

Over his three seasons with the A’s, he was 7-10 with a 2.07 ERA and 75 saves. He was also an All-Star in 2009 and 2010.

He’s a low cost option for the Red Sox as he’s eligible for arbitration for the first time in 2012 meaning the Red Sox will control his rights for the next three years.

In 108 games last season, Sweeney hit .265 with one home run and 25 RBIs. He can play all three outfield positions and probably will be in the mix for the starting RF spot unless the Red Sox get someone to fill the position.

Reddick was probably going to compete for the starting RF job but now will get a chance to play everyday in the spacious outfield at Oakland Alameda County Stadium.

Head was a 26th round draft choice of the Red Sox in 2009 and spent the 2011 season with the Greenville Drive and Salem Red Sox. Combined on the season, he hit .299 with 22 home runs, 82 RBIs and four stolen bases.

Alcantera, who is just 19 years old, spent the 2011 season with the GCL Red Sox and Lowell Spinners. In 13 starts between the two teams, he was 1-4 with a 2.20 ERA.

Personally, I like this move as well like I did with the Melancon deal.

For one, if Bailey has to deal with any injuries, Melancon can step in and fill in for him. Secondly, the move allows Bard to fully concentrate on starting during spring training. Should something change with that, the Red Sox would have a pretty solid back end of the bullpen with him, Bailey, Melancon and Alfredo Aceves. Of course with Aceves, it all depends on whether he’s starting as well.

Sure you lose Reddick and his potential but you need a solid bullpen and this trade solidfies it.

Click on the read more button below to read the press release from the Red Sox if you’re on the home page.

The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder Josh Reddick, and minor league right-handed pitcher Raul Alcantara and first baseman Miles Head.

The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

A two-time All-Star, Bailey converted 24 of 26 save opportunities (92.3 percent) for Oakland in 2011, the second-highest success rate among American League closers.  The 27-year-old posted a 3.24 ERA (15 ER/41.2 IP) in 42 relief appearances overall with the A’s last season, compiling 41 strikeouts compared to 12 walks while holding opponents to a .218 average (34-for-156).

Selected by the A’s in the sixth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Bailey has converted 75 of 84 (89.3) save opportunities in three Major League seasons from 2009-11, the highest career percentage for an Oakland hurler and third-highest in the American League in that time (min. 40 chances).  He has posted a 2.07 ERA (40 ER/174.0 IP) and 174 strikeouts while going 7-10 over his 157 Major League appearances and has held opposing batters to a .188 clip (117-for-621).  Bailey was named AL Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA in 2009 when he set an Oakland rookie record with 26 saves.

Sweeney, 26, hit .265 (70-for-264) with 11 doubles, three triples, one home run, 25 RBI, 34 runs scored and 33 walks in 108 games with the Athletics in 2011, appearing at all three outfield positions and designated hitter.  The left-handed hitter batted at a .286 clip (63-for-220) off right-handers last season.  He did not commit an error in 153 total chances in the outfield, his second straight errorless campaign (also 153 chances in 2010).

A second-round selection of the Chicago White Sox in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Sweeney has a career .283 average (428-for-1515) with 83 doubles, 10 triples, 14 home runs, 169 RBI, 202 runs and 139 walks in 472 career Major League games over parts of six seasons with the White Sox (2006-07) and Athletics (2008-11).

The 24-year-old Reddick appeared in 87 games over two stints with the Red Sox last season, batting .280 (71-for-254) with 18 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 28 RBI and 41 runs, and recorded five assists from the outfield.  He also played in 52 games with Triple-A Pawtucket in 2011 and hit .230 (44-for-191) with nine doubles, a triple, 14 home runs, 36 RBI and 37 runs.  Selected by the Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Reddick is 93-for-375 (.248) with 25 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 37 RBI and 51 runs in 143 career Major League games with Boston over parts of the last three seasons.

Alcantara went 1-4 with a 2.20 ERA (16ER/65.1 IP) in 13 starts between the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Red Sox and Short-A Lowell Spinners in 2011.  The 19-year-old was signed by Boston as an international free agent in July of 2009 and is 6-7 with a 2.72 ERA (38 ER/125.2 IP) in 26 minor league games (26 starts).

Head hit .299 (148-for-495) with 37 doubles, 22 homers, and 82 RBI between Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem in 2011.  The Red Sox 26th pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, the right-handed hitter has a .274 career average (206-for-753), with 53 doubles, 23 home runs, 117 RBI and 83 walks in 204 games over three minor league seasons from 2009-11

Hideki Okajima Joins The Evil Empire

A former Boston Red Sox reliever, Hideki Okajima, has gone over to the dark side as he has signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees.

Hideki OkajimaHe was invited to spring training as a non-roster invitee and will compete for a bullpen spot with former Red Sox farmhand Cesar Cabral.

Okajima appeared in seven games for the Red Sox in 2011 before spending the rest of the season in Triple-A with the Pawtucket Red Sox. With the Red Sox last year, he was 1-0 with a 4.32 ERA. In 34 games with the PawSox, he was 8-1 with a 2.29 ERA.

Overall in his career, all with the Red Sox, Okajima was 17-8 with a 3.11 ERA and six saves from 2007-2011.
