Video: Will Middlebrooks Hits Grand Slam For First Career HR

When Kevin Youkilis went on the 15-day DL with a bad back, the Boston Red Sox brought up their top prospect in Will Middlebrooks to play third base while he was out.

After gathering three hits, two of them doubles, in his first two games, Middlebrooks sat out Saturday’s game with a tight hamstring. But on Sunday, he made his return to the lineup and had the biggest moment so far of his young career.

He finally hit his first MLB home run and he did it in style as it was a grand slam against Baltimore Orioles starter Tommy Hunter that tied the game up at 5-5.

Sunday Red Sox Delight – 5/6

Tommy Hunter (L), Clay Buchholz (R)

After being cooked yesterday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox look to salvage the finale of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon at Historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Clay Buchholz looks to turn around his struggles in his sixth start of 2012. Despite his trials this season, Buchholz is 3-1 with a 8.89 ERA in his five starts. He took the loss in his only start against the Orioles in 2011 when he allowed four runs in 6.2 innings of work. Overall in his career, Buchholz has made 10 appearances (nine starts) against the O’s and is 5-3 with a 3.26 ERA.

Tommy Hunter is making his sixth start of the season for the vastly improved Orioles. In his previous five starts, Hunter is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA. He made two starts against the Red Sox in 2011 and picked up two no decisions to go along with a 3.86 ERA. Overall in his career, Hunter has made six starts against the local nine and is 2-1 with a 6.52 ERA. Three of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA.

Cinco de Mayo Red Sox Delight

Cody Ross #7 of the Boston Red Sox reacts to lining into a double play against the Baltimore Orioles during the eighth inning of the game at Fenway Park on May 4, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts.

4-8 at Fenway Park is pretty pathetic if you ask me. And no, I haven’t been to Historic Fenway Park yet this year so you can’t blame me for the Boston Red Sox record at home so far in 2012.

The Red Sox were facing a rookie pitcher again who they had never seen before and for once they did a pretty good job. They were able to get four runs off of Baltimore Orioles starter Wei-Yin Chen but it still wasn’t good enough for a Red Sox victory.

This game came down to the bullpens and last night, the Orioles bullpen was better. Actually, their bullpen has been one of the best in baseball in this young 2012 season.

After Chen allowed five hits over five innings of work, five pitchers out of the Orioles bullpen allowed just three hits and two walks over the next eight innings. On the contrary, six members of the Red Sox bullpen allowed five hits three walks over the final seven innings after Jon Lester gave them six decent innings.. But more importantly, the local nine’s bullpen allowed three runs.

I say decent innings for Lester because he wasn’t at his best nor his worst. His innings were servicable. His problem was that each time the Red Sox gave him the lead, he would give it right back.

After Cody Ross scored on a passed ball in the 2nd, Mark Reynolds tied it up in the 3rd with a solo home run. After the Red Sox got two in the 3rd, the Orioles got them right back in the 4th. Lester did however leave the game with a 4-3 lead. Vicente Padilla made sure Lester’s career mark of 14-0 against the Orioles stayed in tact when he allowed the tying run in the 7th.

While Franklin Morales didn’t pitch all that badly, he was the one in the bullpen who gave up the two runs. But to me, the start of the Red Sox bullpen was their closer Alfredo Aceves.

He ended up going 2.2 innings and allowing two hits while striking out six. At one point, he had struck out five straight guys and ended up with all six strikeouts in his first two innings. He did exactly what a closer is supposed to do at home when entering the game tied. He kept them in it.

But with the Orioles bullpen pitching as well as it did, the Red Sox offense couldn’t get a thing done.

Adrian Gonzalez broke out of his 0-for-17 slump with a three hit effort. Dustin Pedroia added two hits and an RBI. Cody Ross added a hit and a RBI while Darnell McDonald also knocked in a run. Will Middlebrooks and pinch-hitter Ryan Sweeney had the other hits for the Red Sox.

This is definitely a much improved Orioles team from years past. They aren’t the team that will roll over and play dead like they have in the past. This is a team that has the best bullpen in baseball (numbers wise) right now and there offense is getting the timely hits. That’s why they’re sitting closer to first place than the Red Sox are.

With last night’s game going 13 innings, both teams will be tired.

Hopefully, it’s the Orioles who ended up being a little more lethargic than the Red Sox and we see the three-game losing streak come to an end.

Jason Hammel (L), Aaron Cook (R)

After falling last night 6-4 in 13 innings, the Boston Red Sox look to end their three-game losing streak in the middle game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Historic Fenway Park this afternoon.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN 2. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Aaron Cook gets the start in place of Josh Beckett who is having his start skipped because of a sore lat muscle. Cook has spent the beginning of the 2012 season where he was 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in five starts. Cook has never faced the Orioles in his career.

Jason Hammel makes his sixth start of the season and fourth on the road for the surprising Orioles. In his previous five starts, Hammel is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA. He has not faced the Red Sox snce the 2010 season when he was a member of the Colorado Rockies. In that start, he picked up a no decision after allowing four runs in four innings of work. Hammel has made nine career appearances (three starts) against the Red Sox in his career and is 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA. Six of those appearances (one start) have come at the Fens where he is 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA.

Here are today’s lineups:

Baltimore Orioles17-9 Boston Red Sox11-14
1. Endy Chavez LF 1. Nick Punto 3B
2. J.J. Hardy SS 2. Dustin Pedroia 2B
3. Nick Markakis RF 3. David Ortiz DH

Red Sox News & Notes – 5/4

Boston Red Sox's Adrian Gonzalez yells after striking out and leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning against the Oakland Athletics in a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Wednesday, May 2, 2012. At left is Athletics catcher Kurt Suzuki.

The cold, damp weather plus some good pitching in the last two games hasn’t been kind to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park this week. And it’s not expected to change until Sunday at the earliest. The weather that is.

Hopefully the weather along with some good Red Sox pitching cools off the surprising Baltimore Orioles who come to the Fens for a three-game weekend set. Sure it’s early in the season but the Orioles are playing some good baseball right now as they sit at 16-9 and 1.5 games out of first place.

The last time the Red Sox faced the Orioles, the fortunes of the local nine changed. It was the Orioles who eliminated the Red Sox from a playoff spot in the last game of the 2011 season.

So while the players may not say this publicly, you have to think they would love nothing more than getting some revenge by picking up a weekend sweep. The Red Sox definitely could need that right now after dropping two straight games to fall back below .500 at 11-13.

The landscape of the AL East did change a little yesterday after the New York Yankees announced that closer Mariano Rivera would miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL during batting practice. Yes he plays for the Yankees but Rivera has earned the respect of everyone. He’s one of the few Yankees to get an “ovation” at Fenway Park.

But back to the Red Sox.

Right now Adrian Gonzalez is mired in a slump for the ages for him. He’s 0 for his last 17 at the plate. We all know he’s way too good of a hitter for this to happen. You can bet that he spent sometime yesterday on the off day analyzing his swing and I’d say he’ll probably do more of that this afternoon before the game.

The Red Sox do have the right guy on the mound tonight in Jon Lester to turn things around. Lester has owned the Orioles in his career as he is 14-0 with 2.36 ERA in 18 career starts. We need his dominance of them to continue tonight.

As expected, the Red Sox called up Aaron Cook last night. He’ll take the place of Josh Beckett on Saturday. The Red Sox sent down Jose Iglesias to make room for Cook. Iglesias had been called up to provide depth for Kevin Youkilis before he was placed on the DL and Will Middlebrooks came up.

We’ll be back later with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Red Sox Call Up Aaron Cook From Pawtucket

We all knew that the Boston Red Sox were going to call up Aaron Cook from Triple-A Pawtucket. Well now the move is official.

To make room for Cook on the 40-man roster, Carl Crawford was moved to the 60-day DL. Jose Iglesias was optioned to the PawSox to make room for Cook on the 25-man roster.

Here’s the full release from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today selected right-handed pitcher Aaron Cook to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. The club also announced that shortstop Jose Iglesias was optioned to Pawtucket following Wednesday night’s game.

Boston Red SoxTo make room for Cook on the 40-man roster, the club transferred outfielder Carl Crawford to the 60-day disabled list. Cook is scheduled to start against the Orioles on Saturday at Fenway Park.

Cook, 33, began the season with Triple-A Pawtucket after signing with Boston as a minor league free agent on January 11. In five starts for the PawSox, he went 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA (7 ER/33.1 IP), 13 strikeouts, 11 walks and 26 hits allowed.

The right-hander entered today ranked third in the International League in ERA and innings pitched and first among all Triple-A hurlers with two complete games, each 7.0 innings in length. He yielded three or fewer runs over 5.0 innings or more in all five starts, including three outings allowing one run or less. Red Sox News & Notes – 5/3

Boston Red Sox left fielder Cody Ross cannot get to a double off the wall by Oakland Athletics' Yoenis Cespedes during the fourth inning of a baseball game at Fenway Park in Boston, Wednesday, May 2, 2012

The Boston Red Sox returned home from the seven game road trip at 7-1 and all facets of the game were clicking. They did run into some tough pitching over the weekend against the Chicago White Sox.

And after routing the Oakland A’s on Monday night, the Red Sox offense once again ran into some tough pitching that has made their bats feeling like the Fenway Park air the past few nights. Cold.

Tuesday night, it was Jarrod Parker who shut them down. On Wednesday night that task went to Brandon McCarthy.

The Red Sox hadn’t seen McCarthy since 2008 and he’s basically reinvented himself. He had struggled in the past against the local nine and at the Fens but he was masterful last night.

When he did get in trouble, he was able to work out of it.

Daniel Bard didn’t pitch all that badly for the Red Sox last night. Unfortunately for him though, the A’s took advantage of him when he did run into some trouble.

Bard’s stuff was good for the most part. The big difference being is that he didn’t get the swing and misses that we’ve seen from him in his previous outings. His fastball velocity stayed consistent the whole game but it lacked the movement that he’s had in the past. And with the A’s being patient with him, that proved to be the difference.

Adrian Gonzalez is one of the best hitters in baseball, there’s no doubts about that. But right now, Gonzo is in a big funk at the plate. He’s 0 for his last 17 at the plate and was even chasing a few pitches that he normally wouldn’t.

He came up in a big spot in the 8th inning with the bases loaded and chance to put the Red Sox up with a grand slam or at the very least tie the game up. Instead, Ryan Cook ended up striking him out. After the strikeout, Gonzo showed a little frustration with himself, something the normally reserved Gonzalez doesn’t do.

Clayton Mortensen was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket earlier in the day and impressed in his Red Sox debut. After he gave up a leadoff single and then uncorked a wild pitch, he settled down and ended up striking out six over the final three innings. He’ll probably be the odd man out though this weekend when Aaron Cook is called up to start for Josh Beckett who is suffering from stiffness in his lat muscle.

Wednesday night also marked the debut of top prospect Will Middlebrooks who also impressed in his MLB debut.

In his first at-bat, he worked a walk and then promptly stole second. He got his first MLB hit when he beat out an infield single. In his third at-bat, he laced a double the other way. He was finally retired by Cook in the 8th for his MLB strikeout. He was also very sound defensively.

One thing’s for certain, this kid looked like he belonged last night. Hopefully that continues while he fills in for Kevin Youkilis who went on the 15-day DL with back stiffness.

Either way, the future is certainly bright for Middlebrooks.

The Red Sox are off today but we’ll be back in a short while with the pitching matchups for the weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
