UConn F Breanna Stewart (30) focuses in on defending Creighton F Alexis Akin-Otiko (45) at Gampel Pavilion on November 23, 2014.

From UConn:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A day after the UConn women’s basketball team responded to its first loss in 48 games with a 96-60 win over Creighton, junior forward Breanna Stewart (Syracuse, N.Y.) was tabbed as the American Athletic Conference’s Player of the week. In addition, freshman guard Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ontario) earned a spot on the league’s honor roll.

Stewart, the 2013-14 AP Player of the Year, averaged 24.0 points per in the Huskies’ 1-1 week On Nov. 17, the junior notched 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds against then-ranked No. 6 Stanford before collecting 25 points and 10 boards on an incredible 10-of-10 afternoon from the field in UConn’s home opener against Creighton.

Stewart now has two double-double performances in the 2014-15 campaign after posting 14 during her first two seasons combined. Her masterful shooting performance marked the first time a Husky had hit every shot from the field (min. 10 attempts) since Nykesha Sales in 1997. In addition, the forward now boasts 31 career games with at least 20 points.

Nurse was placed on the conference honor roll after delivering a career-best performance against the Bluejays on Sunday. The freshman chipped in 22 points on 6-of-7 shooting and connected on all four of her attempts from beyond the arc. Nurse also dished out a pair of assists and recorded two steals in the Huskies’ convincing win.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Estero, Fla. to participate in the Gulf Coast Showcase. UConn will play the College of Charleston on Friday, Nov. 28 at 8:30 p.m.

UConn Women look to rebound against Creighton and at the Gulf Coast Showcase

The UConn Women’s Basketball team will past their previous defeat at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal as they prepare for their upcoming matchup with the Creighton Bluejays. The Huskies lost in heartbreaking fashion this past Monday evening, falling to Stanford 88-86 in overtime. The loss snapped a 47 game winning streak, dating back to the 2012-13 season.

It was the second time in the past five years that Stanford has ended a UConn unbeaten streak with Stanford ending UConn’s remarkable 90 game win streak back in 2010 at the same Maples Pavilion.

So it will be back to work with UConn facing off against Creighton on Sunday afternoon. Following that game, they will head down to Fort Myers, Florida for the Gulf Coast Showcase Basketball Tournament to face the College of Charleston. The men’s team defeated Charleston on Thursday afternoon in the Puerto Rico Tip-off Tournament so these two schools are getting quite close with one another.

With UConn in tow, attendance numbers for this year’s Gulf Coast Showcase are expected to be higher than ever. UConn is the only true draw for any women’s program in the country, though Tennessee and a few other programs do have a decent following contingent. And with the local favorites Florida Gulf Coast headlining the men’s side of the event, you can expect big crowds when the tourney kicks off Monday.

UConn fans looking for a nice warm destination can find cheap flights to Fort Myers International Airport at Hipmunk. Whether you’re flying out of Logan in Boston, JFK or La Guardia in New York City, or Bradley International in Hartford, you’ll be able to find deals at Hipmunk. You will also be able to find the best Fort Myers hotels or cheap Airbnb deals so make sure to check them out.

Though it is obviously unfortunate the streak ended for UConn, now the team knows they are not invincible and will just be extra motivation to prove that this year’s team is worthy of discussion as one of the better UConn teams of recent past. They’ll be put to the test in Fort Myers so make sure to check them out!

UConn Selected as Co-Host for Regionals of 2016 and 2017 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

From UConn:

Webster Bank Arena, along with the University of Connecticut and Fairfield University, are proud to announce that they will host the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships for regional play in both 2016 and 2017.

logoncaa“We would like to thank the NCAA for honoring Webster Bank Arena with the women’s basketball regional,” said Arena President Howard Saffan. “It is a great reflection on the continued growth of the city of Bridgeport as well as the improvements throughout our venue. We could not have received this honor without our loyal partners at Fairfield University and the University of Connecticut.”

“The news that UConn has been selected to co-host the Regionals of the 2016 and 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport is exciting,” said UConn Senior Associate Director of Athletics/SWA Deb Corum. “This provides another opportunity for the fans in Fairfield County, and across the state, to see high level competition right here at home. The staff at Webster Bank Arena does an excellent job and teams that have played in that facility always enjoy a superlative experience. Our hearfelt thanks go out to the fans who have helped make Connecticut one of the nation’s premier college basketball locations.”

“We’re obviously delighted with the announcement,” said Fairfield Director of Athletics Gene Doris. “We’ve been hosting NCAA events pretty much since the building opened. We’re pleased to be partnering with the University of Connecticut and Webster Bank Arena in hosting this event.”

The city of Bridgeport will see the best women’s basketball has to offer in the Sweet Sixteen and the Elite Eight.

“This is great news,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “In our improving downtown, we’re extremely proud to serve as home to Webster Bank Arena, which is a world-class sports and entertainment facility. It’s playing a key role in our city nearing a renaissance. And, I’m crossing my fingers that my alma mater, UCONN, gets to play – and win – in our backyard.”

Webster Bank Arena has hosted two regionals previously, back in 2006 and in 2013. The 2016 tournament will run from March 25 to 28 and the 2017 regional will run from March 24 to 27.
