Friday Red Sox Travesty – 9/28

Aaron Cook (L), Chris Tillman (R)

After a day off on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox head out on the the road for the final six games of their miserable 2012 season. They’ll kick it off tonight with the first game of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Orioles television market, you can catch the game on MASN. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Aaron Cook toes the rubber for the 18th tim in what most likely will be the final time in a Red Sox uniform this season. In his previous 17 starts, Cook is 4-10 with a 5.13 ERA. His three career starts against the Orioles have come this season in which he is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA. He took the loss in his lone Camden Yards start where he allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.

Chris Tillman makes his 14th start of 2012 for skipper Buck Showalter. In his previous 13 starts, Tillman is 8-2 with a 3.08 ERA. He’s made two starts against the visiting nine from Boston this season and has no record with a 3.38 ERA (4 ER/10.2 IP). Tillman has made four career starts against the Red Sox and is 0-1 with a 4.24 ERA.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/28

With the Boston Red Sox having been out of the playoff races in the AL essentially since the middle of the season, we’ve been waiting for them to play spoiler this late in the season. As we all know, they haven’t been doing a good job of it.

Orioles MagicAnd as they head to Baltimore for a weekend matchup with the Orioles, I think there’s a part of all of us that want the Red Sox to lay down and play dead this weekend. Before you say anything or judge me, you know you’re also secretly hoping the Orioles make the playoffs.

But wouldn’t it be better if they won the division over the New York Yankees. Could you imagine how batshi* crazy and pissed the Yankees fanbase would be if they had to play a one-game playoff.

Anyways, enough of that.

Yesterday during an interview on WEEI, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington made a comment about a possible manager search.

“I’d always rather get the decision right rather than rush it,” Cherington said. “But I think that what we know we need to do is hit the ground running in this offseason. One of the things, as I look back at last offseason, that didn’t go perfectly was simply the amount of time that we spent on the manager search and what that did to the rest of the offseason. I would like to spend less time on it this offseason, that’s for sure.”

Most of the local media alluded to the fact that this meant Bobby Valentine would be canned at the end of the season. My thoughts would be that one way to avoid having to search for a manager is to not fire Valentine. Only Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal shared that sentiment.

I’m pretty sure that if Valentine is back, Red Sox Nation as a whole would not be happy. I can only imagine what would be said.

The fact that all of his coaches are not under contract for next season can go two ways.

Valentine could stay on as skipper and then get the coaches he wants instead of ones he was basically forced to keep. Or, Cherington can fire Valentine and then hire a new manager who would be able to bring in his own guys.

I’m hoping for the latter myself.

We’ll be back later today with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Jason Varitek Joins Red Sox Front Office

Former Boston Red Sox catcher and two-time World Series Champion, Jason Varitek #33, waves to the crowd while being honored on 'Thanks, Tek Day' at Fenway Park on July 21, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts prior to the game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

During his interview with Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy the other day, Jason Varitek alluded that he was close to a job with the Boston Red Sox. Then the local media all had their sources tell them the same thing.

Had the media listened to the interview, they would have known what was happening. But that would be too easy for them.

Anyways, the Red Sox announced on Thursday that Varitek has been named a Special Assistant to General Manager Ben Cherington.

Here’s the release:

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox today named Jason Varitek Special Assistant to the General Manager.  The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

“Jason was one of the most respected players of his era and will be a key voice as we move forward,” said Cherington.  “He will be involved in a number of areas including Major League personnel decisions, evaluations, and mentorship and instruction of young players.  We are fortunate to have him in this role.”

Selected as the 18th full-time captain in Red Sox history on December 24, 2004, Varitek holds the Red Sox record with 1,488 games caught.  He appeared in 1,546 Major League contests over 15 seasons with the club from 1997-2011, the fourth-longest tenured Red Sox ever who never played for another Major League team behind Carl Yastrzemski (23), Ted Williams (19) and Jim Rice (16).  In his career, the switch-hitter batted .256 (1,307-for-5,099) with 306 doubles, 14 triples, 193 home runs, 757 RBI, 614 walks and 664 runs.  A three-time All-Star (2003, 2005 and 2008), Varitek was named the Red Sox Rookie of the Year in 1998 and won the club’s MVP Award in 2003.  He became the first Boston catcher ever to win a Silver Slugger Award when he received the honor in 2005, the same year he was also honored with a Rawlings Gold Glove Award.

Varitek won World Series Championships with Boston in 2004 and 2007 and is the club’s all-time postseason leader in games (63) and at-bats (228).  He also ranks second among Red Sox postseason leaders in runs (37), hits (54), doubles (12) and home runs (tied, 11), and is third in RBI (33).  Varitek is third in all-time postseason starts (58) and games at catcher (62), behind Jorge Posada (106, 119) and Yogi Berra (61, 63).  He was selected as winner of the Jackie Jensen Hustle Award from the Boston Chapter of the BBWAA in 1999 and was the 2006 recipient of the Red Sox Heart and Hustle Award.

Notes from this week’s opponent Buffalo:

Here is video of Buffalo Bulls head coach Jeff Quinn’s press conference.

Jeff Quinn is in his third season in charge of the Buffalo program. His first Buffalo team had a 2-10 record in 2010 and the Bulls were 3-9 in 2011. Quinn had last been the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Cincinnati of the BIG EAST for three years. Before coming to the Bearcats, he was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Central Michigan. He came to CMU in 2004 after coaching for 15 seasons at Grand Valley State, where the team won back-to-back national championships in 2002 and ‘03.

Branden Oliver was showered in preseason accolades this past summer, putting his name on three preseason award watch lists. The junior made The Walter Camp, Maxwell Award, and Doak Walker Award watch lists honors. He was the first Bulls ever to make the Maxwell watch list, and he was the only Mid-American Conference player to make all three lists.

Linebacker Khalil Mack was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award watch lists.

It has been 10 years since Buffalo has returned a punt for a touchdown. The last UB player to return a punt for a touchdown was Andre Forde against Lehigh (83 yards) on Aug. 29, 2002. The Bulls have the longest drought in the FBS of not returning a punt for a touchdown.

Buffalo scored 56 points against Morgan State on Sept. 8 – a Division I-A record for points scored by a UB team. It marked the second time under Jeff Quinn that the Bulls have scored 50+ points in a game. Buffalo scored 51 points against Akron on Nov. 19 of last season.

The Bulls are looking for their second ever win over an AQ BCS opponent. Buffalo won at Rutgers, 34-11, in 2002.

Alex Neutz leads the nation in receiving touchdowns per game (2). He has already set a season high with 6 touchdown receptions. He had four TDs in both 2010 and 2011. He is the first UB player with a touchdown reception in three straight games since Naaman Roosevelt caught a TD catch in seven straight games in 2008.

The Bulls have 14 sacks though three games – the most of any team in the MAC. In addition, 10 of the other MAC teams have played four games.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/27

Members of the "All-Time Fenway Park Team" made up of former and current Boston Red Sox players pose for a photo prior to a baseball game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park in Boston, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012.

Despite all the fanfare and the celebration last night of the All Fenway Park Team, the Boston Red Sox weren’t able to make the fans, themselves and the alumni happy. It’s probably not a surprise to anyone because they’ve basically sucked the proverbial D all season long at home.

Fenway Park used to be a place where the Red Sox would thrive. Now we sit back and watch as the ownership group says the games are sellouts despite the fact there are empty seats everywhere.

The Tampa Bay Rays are still on the outside of a playoff spot and their odds aren’t great. But they took another step in the right direction by beating the local nine 4-2 last night.

The Rays have won seven straight games but remain five games back in the AL East. They are three back in the AL Wild Card standings of the Oakland A’s who are the second wild card team. The Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox’s next opponent, are a 1/2 game ahead of the A’s for the top spot and they are 1.5 games behind the Yankees.

It’ll be an interesting weekend in the AL East.

You expect the Yankees to have an easy time of things with the Toronto Blue Jays over the next four days. The Red Sox are playing the Orioles and the Rays go out of the division to play the Chicago White Sox for the next four days. Once atop the AL Central, the White Sox now trail the Detroit Tigers by a game. So if there was a series to watch in the AL this weekend, it’s this one.

I’d talk more about the Red Sox but frankly they aren’t worth it right now. Sure maybe this is an overreaction to things but you can’t tell me they are. If you can, prove it to me.

The Red Sox are off today but we’ll be back in a bit with the pitching matchups for the weekend. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Final Red Sox Home Travesty – 9/26

Alex Cobb (L), Jon Lester (R)

After falling 5-2 last night, the Boston Red Sox will play their final home game of the 2012 season. Tonight, they’ll look to avoid being swept in the finale of a two-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays at historic Fenway Park.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Rays television market, you can catch the game on Sun Sports. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to it on the Red Sox radio network.

Jon Lester gets the honors for the final home game as he makes his 32nd start of 2012. In his previous 31 starts, Lester is 9-13 with a 4.96 ERA. His lone start against the Rays this season came way back on May 25 when he took the loss after allowing seven runs in four innings of work. Lester has made 21 career starts against the Rays and is 10-7 with a 4.29 ERA. 14 of those starts have come at the Fens where he is 6-6 with a 4.66 ERA.

Alex Cobb makes his 22nd start of 2012 as he looks to keep the Rays close in the AL Wild Card race. In his previous 21 starts, Cobb is 9-9 with a 4.27 ERA. Both of Cobb’s career starts against the Red Sox have come this season in which is he is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA. In his lone Fenway start, he was matched up with Lester on May 25th and got the win after allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings of work.

Red Sox News & Notes – 9/26

Jeff Keppinger #7 of the Tampa Bay Rays watches the ball after hitting a three-run home run in the second inning against the Boston Red Sox during the game on September 25, 2012 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.

Even if you took away the bad second inning from Clay Buchholz last night, it’s highly unlikely that the Boston Red Sox would have beaten the Tampa Bay Rays. David Price was just that good.

The Rays got three in that fateful second inning on their way to a 5-2 win over the local nine to keep their playoff dream alive and well.

With both the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles losing last night, the Rays are 3.5 games of the Orioles and five games behind the Yankees in the AL East. But with the Oakland Athletics winning, the Rays remain three games behind them for the final AL Wild Card spot.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are a 1/2 game ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays for last place in the AL East. Since moving to a five team AL East in 1994, the Red Sox have never finished in the basement.

Buchholz had an easy time of things in the first inning only to walk the first two batters he faced in the second. Then he left a fastball out over the plate that Jeff Keppinger blasted into the Green Monster seats and just like that the Red Sox trailed 3-0.

Price was good last night, no he was great. He ended up striking out 13 Red Sox batters on the night in a complete game effort. He got Mauro Gomez three times and got Pedro Ciriaco, Daniel Nava, Ryan Lavarnway and Jose Iglesias twice. In fact, the only member of the starting nine for the Red Sox not to strike out was Dustin Pedroia.

As great as Price was the Red Sox did have their opportunities. But a baserunning blunder in the second inning shut down a rally.

Cody Ross had led off the inning with a single and then went to third base on a Gomez wall ball single. After a Lavarnway flyout to short right, Danny Valencia hit one in the gap that scored Ross. But Valencia got over zealous with a big wide turn and was gunned down going back to first base. Price left Gomez stranded at third base when Che-Hsuan Lin grounded out.

Baserunning cost the Red Sox again in the third inning when Ciriaco was thrown out for just the second time this season stealing third base. It proved costly because Pedroia doubled Nava over to third. The Red Sox would score when Price balked in Nava. But Price once again escaped any further damage as he got a big strikeout of Ross.

From that point forward, the Red Sox had two batters reach base; a Pedroia single in the 6th and Valencia in the 8th on a throwing error by Ben Zobrist.

Tonight will mark the final home game of the 2012 season for the Red Sox. They’ll honor the All-Fenway Team for the 100th Anniversary before the game. Then after the game they’ll embark on a six-game road trip where they hope to play spoiler with the Orioles and Yankees.

And with tonight being the last home game, we can only hope and pray that this is the last game Bobby Valentine ever manages in a Red Sox uniform at the Fens. If he’s back next year, I’d be shocked.

We’ll be back later today with today’s lineups, batter/pitcher matchups and links from the day. So for now, let’s take at look at the overnight links from the media by clicking on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.
