UConn looking to get hot before conference tournament, a familiar formula

The highs and lows continue for the UConn Huskies, as the Jekyl and Hyde act continues towards their final two games of the regular season.

Connecticut turned their two game winning streak into a three game winning streak by defeating the conference leading SMU Mustangs at home on March 1st. Ryan Boatright scored 23 points and Rodney Purvis had a career-high 28 and the Huskies (17-11, 10-6 American) beat a ranked opponent for the first time this season, upsetting No. 21 SMU 81-73 on Sunday

UConn has won three straight and six of its past eight. The Huskies are in fifth place in the league, a game ahead of Memphis. The top five teams will get first-round byes when the AAC tournament opens in Hartford, Connecticut on March 12.

UConn heads back to campus to host Memphis at Gampel Pavilion before closing the season next Saturday at Temple. The Huskies lost to both teams earlier this season.

According to SeatSmart, the average ticket price for Connecticut tickets vs. Memphis is $23 with a walk-in price of $8. Tickets for their game against Temple have an average price of $43 with a walk-in price of $9.

On Thursday, Boatright will be honored along with Pat Lenehan, Dan Guest and managers Nick Blanco and Colon Oehrle in Senior Night ceremonies before tip off. Boatright, the leading scorer in the AAC at 17.7 points per game, will leave an impressive mark on the program. He has 1,689 points and 479 assists, joining former teammate Shabazz Napier as the only players to reach the top 10 in program history in both categories. Boatright has played 122 games for UConn and was a part of the 2013-14 National Championship team. He moved in front of Wes Bialosuknia (1,673) and into ninth place on UConn’s scoring list, behind Kemba Walker (1,783).

It’s an omen that UConn is playing their best ball heading into the NCAA Tournament, because everyone remembers how well that worked out for them last time.

Most expensive tickets for Red Sox games during Spring Training

Here are the results of the Boston Red Sox the last three seasons: Last place in AL East, World Series champions, Last place in AL East.

They may not be good enough to win a title this year, but they will most likely not finish in last place again, either, after the team revamped their roster in preparation for this upcoming season.

The Red Sox brought in the top two offensive free agents, Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, while restocking their rotation with Justin Masterson, Wade Miley and Rick Porcello. There’s been a lot of turnover, but in just one offseason the Red Sox have gone from pretenders to contenders.

It all begins during the 2015 Spring Training season, which is just around the corner.

The majority of the Red Sox Spring Training games are played at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida. Boston Red Sox tickets are available at ScoreBig.com for all Spring Trainings games. The highest average ticket price for a game at JetBlue Park is against their longtime division rival, the New York Yankees on March 13th, where the average ticket price is $154 with a get-in price of $56.

The next highest average ticket prices includes games against the Philadelphia Phillies on March 22nd and against the St. Louis Cardinals on March 23rd. The average ticket price for the Phillies game is $124 with a get-in price of $18, and the average ticket price for the Cardinals game is $118 with a get-in price of $38.

Lastly, the highest average ticket price for a Boston Red Sox Spring Training game not at JetBlue Park is on March 8th against the New York Mets at Tradition Field. The average ticket price is $102.08 and the get-in price is $45.

The one thing in common with these games that are fetching the highest average ticket prices is that they involve some of the top fan bases in the sport. Red Sox Spring Training games will be heavily attended to as the team tries to gel in preparation for the 2015 regular season.

Huskies need to bring their “A” game to Memphis

During their current stretch of playing the top teams in the AAC, the Connecticut Huskies are faring well and are enjoying a five day break in between games. After beating Tulsa (who was in first place at the time) at home by 25 points on February 12th, the Huskies dropped a road game by 18 points at the first place SMU Mustangs on Valentine’s Day.

The Huskies had a five day break to gear up for their final stretch run. They cannot afford two losses in their final six games. At 14-10 overall with a 7-5 conference record, the Huskies can still pick up quality wins before the AAC tournament. They face Memphis twice, host the conference leading Mustangs at home and end the regular season schedule at Temple.

Connecticut kicks off the final stretch with two games this week. They face the Memphis Tigers on the road on Thursday, February 19th and go back home to play Tulane at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. According to TiqIQ.com, there are fewer than 100 Connecticut Huskies vs Memphis Tigers tickets at the Fedex Forum, with an average ticket price of $58 and a walk-in price of $13. On Sunday, February 22nd, Connecticut vs Tulane tickets are going for $62.28 on average, with a walk-in price of $42.

Our friends at Hipmunk.com can help Connecticut fans watch their basketball team wherever they go with easily searchable flights to Memphis and other fantastic guides on flying from Bradley International or anywhere in the Northeast. For those looking to enjoy some extra time in the area, Hipmunk can also help you reserve hotels in Memphis for as little as $80 per night.

College basketball would be in a better place if the Connecticut Huskies earn the chance to defend their 2014 NCAA Tournament championship. Fans are hoping they have enough in them to climb the standings in the AAC and be in the best position possible for at at-large bid if they cannot win the conference tournament.

UConn-SMU Set For ESPN “Saturday Night College Basketball” in Dallas

If the Connecticut Huskies want a chance to defend their 2014 NCAA tournament championship, they’re going to have to put a run together in the second half of AAC conference play. After losing back-to-back games to Cincinnati and Houston, the Huskies won consecutive games vs East Carolina and Tulane and are currently sixth in the conference with a 6-4 record, three and a half games behind conference leading Tulsa.

There are over 100 UConn Huskies vs. SMU Mustangs tickets remaining, with an average ticket price of $149.30 and a get-in price of $67. Connecticut fans looking to get out of the snow in Storrs, CT can use Hipmunk.com to support their team at Moody Coliseum. Dallas flights are easily accessible from Bradley International Airport and for those wanting to spend the weekend in the Dallas, TX area, Dallas hotels can be arranged as well for as little as $78.

Connecticut can make up ground rather quickly, as they take on the top two teams in the conference in a three day span. After taking on Tulsa on February 12th, the Huskies travel to Dallas, Texas to face the possible first place SMU Mustangs at Moody Coliseum.

After winning eight consecutive conference games, SMU lost to Cincinnati on February 5th but rebounded right away, defeating Tulsa on the road 68-57, putting themselves a half game behind the Golden Hurricane in the standings.

The Valentine’s Day matchup between the Huskies and the Mustangs will feature two of the conference’s best guards in Ryan Boatright and Nic Moore. When Boatright, who is averaging 17.8 points per game with 4.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists, shoots under 40% from the field, the Huskies usually find themselves in trouble. Aside from their two losses against Duke and West Virginia, the Huskies have lost seven of their nine games when Boatright is under 40% from the field.

Moore has the knack of realizing when he has to be a distributor or when he has to be more scoring oriented. In their last four wins, Moore has had two games scoring over 20 points and two games scoring single digits.

Connecticut will have to reverse their fortunes on the road if they want to vault up the AAC standings. They’ve dropped their last three conference road games to Houston, Cincinnati and Tulsa, with a road loss to Stanford mixed in between.

UConn looks to sweep season series with Cincinnati Thursday night

The defending champion UConn Huskies haven’t had an easy go of it during the 2014-15 season, as they enter a huge Thursday night clash against the Cincinnati Bearcats in search of a quality win. Neither team has stuck inside the nation’s top-25 rankings, but both have at least four wins inside the American Athletic Conference and are still within striking distance of the top of the conference.

Despite neither team really having the luxury of being able to afford another big loss, Cincinnati Bearcats tickets are a conservative $35 on average (just $6 to get in the door). Considering Huskies tickets are usually around $68 on average, it looks like fans from both sides will get a nice discount when the two take the floor in Cincy on Thursday night. Of course, depending on who is able to squeak out the win, these squads could be headed in very different directions.

Fans looking to attend the game can review information on Cincinnati flights into Cincinnati Airport.  Currently, airline tickets can be found for less than $500 round trip. Hipmunk also has availability on cheap hotels in the greater-Cincinnati area, with rates as low as $65 per night, as well as even cheaper Airbnb options.

The University of Connecticut won the national title in men’s basketball last year, yet it seems like so long ago after a somewhat sluggish 11-7 start. The silver lining is that the Huskies have managed to win four of six tries inside their conference, although dropping a third conference game on Thursday to Cincinnati could end up being extremely damaging. The only big-name win the Huskies have to this point is a 63-59 nail biter over Florida, but with the Gators also struggling, UConn is left looking for more validation.

That validation could easily come on Thursday with a win over the Bearcats, which would give the Huskies a 2-0 sweep of the season series and give them much-needed momentum as they try to pick up steam the rest of the way. UConn was able to get past Cincinnati back on January 10th of this year (62-56), thanks to an elite performance from their guards. Ryan Boatright led the way, putting up 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the tight affair. That game originally helped cap a nice run of five wins in six contests – a feeling the Huskies hope to re-ignite during the rematch.

UConn Women look to rebound against Creighton and at the Gulf Coast Showcase

The UConn Women’s Basketball team will past their previous defeat at the hands of the Stanford Cardinal as they prepare for their upcoming matchup with the Creighton Bluejays. The Huskies lost in heartbreaking fashion this past Monday evening, falling to Stanford 88-86 in overtime. The loss snapped a 47 game winning streak, dating back to the 2012-13 season.

It was the second time in the past five years that Stanford has ended a UConn unbeaten streak with Stanford ending UConn’s remarkable 90 game win streak back in 2010 at the same Maples Pavilion.

So it will be back to work with UConn facing off against Creighton on Sunday afternoon. Following that game, they will head down to Fort Myers, Florida for the Gulf Coast Showcase Basketball Tournament to face the College of Charleston. The men’s team defeated Charleston on Thursday afternoon in the Puerto Rico Tip-off Tournament so these two schools are getting quite close with one another.

With UConn in tow, attendance numbers for this year’s Gulf Coast Showcase are expected to be higher than ever. UConn is the only true draw for any women’s program in the country, though Tennessee and a few other programs do have a decent following contingent. And with the local favorites Florida Gulf Coast headlining the men’s side of the event, you can expect big crowds when the tourney kicks off Monday.

UConn fans looking for a nice warm destination can find cheap flights to Fort Myers International Airport at Hipmunk. Whether you’re flying out of Logan in Boston, JFK or La Guardia in New York City, or Bradley International in Hartford, you’ll be able to find deals at Hipmunk. You will also be able to find the best Fort Myers hotels or cheap Airbnb deals so make sure to check them out.

Though it is obviously unfortunate the streak ended for UConn, now the team knows they are not invincible and will just be extra motivation to prove that this year’s team is worthy of discussion as one of the better UConn teams of recent past. They’ll be put to the test in Fort Myers so make sure to check them out!

Huskies depart For San Juan

The UConn Huskies will embark on a trip to San Juan to compete in the Puerto Rico tip-off beginning on Thursday. Their first opponent will be the Charleston Cougars of the Colonial Athletic Association. Also competing in the Puerto Rico tipoff include the Boston College Eagles, Dayton Flyers, George Mason Patriots, New Mexico Lobos, Texas A&M Aggies, and West Virginia Mountaineers.

Puerto-Rico-Tip-OffThe Huskies are the favorite to take home the title in Puerto Rico, though they will have to play much better than their showing on Friday evening against Bryant. The Huskies won 66-53, but trailed by six – 34-28 – at the half and needed a big run midway through the second to ultimately win. Ryan Boatright led the team with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, filling up the score sheet for UConn. Center Amida Brimah looked good at times, chipping 12 points, 5 rebounds, as well as 5 blocks.

Missing was Rodney Purvis who was suspended for the first game of the year due to his participation in a summer basketball league. It was yet another sign of the NCAA’s decaying ability to do anything correct, but the transfer had to sit out a game and wait a few more days for his Huskies debut.

Following Puerto Rico, things don’t get much easier for UConn as they will host the 10th ranked Texas Longhorns at Gampel Pavilion. According to Easy Seat, UConn Huskies men’s basketball tickets for the Texas game have an average ticket price of $139 with a get-in price of $59. It’s the most expensive game of the season at Gampel and arguably the biggest non-conference game of the year for UConn. They’ll have very difficult matchups with Duke (neutral site) and Florida (in Gainesville) so this could ultimately be their biggest win on the resume entering conference play. With a conference expected to have very few Final Four contenders, the Huskies will need to do as well as possible in non-conference play to get recognized by the committee this year.

Longhorns the Most Expensive Game for UConn Huskies Tickets

The UConn Men’s Basketball team shocked the world last season, winning the national title against the Kentucky Wildcats. They entered the tournament as a seven seed, probably a higher seed than their body of work dictated, but clearly an indication that the Huskies were expected to bow out early in the tournament.

That was simply not the case and the Shabazz Napier-led Huskies eventually cut down the nets. It will be a different team this season with Napier, DeAndre Daniels, and Niels Giffey all gone and it will also be much more expensive to purchase UConn men’s basketball tickets. Below is a breakdown of the top three most expensive games on the UConn schedule.

1.)    November 30, 2014 vs. Texas Longhorns | Gampel Pavilion | Average Ticket Price = $256.48

According to UConn partner Easy Seat, the most expensive game in Connecticut this year will be when the Longhorns visit Gampel Pavilion the last day of November. The average ticket price is currently just above $250 with the cheapest tickets available starting at $170. Rick Barnes and company have not been in national title talks for quite some time now, but they are still a big draw on the road and the most well-known program visiting the Huskies this season.

2.)    March 1, 2015 vs. SMU Mustangs | XL Center | Average Ticket Price = $240.36

The Huskies lost to the Larry Brown led Mustangs last season 64-55 at SMU. They’ll try to return the favor this season when SMU visits on a Sunday afternoon on the 1st of March. SMU expects to be one of the better teams in the AAC and this will undoubtedly be a hotly-contested game.

3.)    December 31, 2014 vs. Temple Owls | XL Center | Average Ticket Price = $180.71

What better way to ring in the New Year than to catch a UConn Huskies game? They’ll host Temple at 1:00 PM EST on the 31st of December for a Wednesday afternoon matchup. You’ll have plenty of time to do other festivities once the game is finished so make sure to grab your tickets now!

Tickets to Friday night’s UConn and South Florida game start at just $12

This week the Huskies will be on the road to face off against the South Florida Bulls this Friday night on a nationally televised game on ESPN.  Both teams boast 1-2 records with the Huskies losing to BYU 35-10 at home the opening week, defeating Stony Brook 19-16 on September 6th, and then falling to Boise State 38-21 last week.  Meanwhile, South Florida opened their season with a 36-31 victory against the Western Carolina Catamounts, but have since fallen to ACC foes Maryland and North Carolina State 24-17 and 49-17, respectively.

This will be the first road test for the Huskies and the fourth consecutive home game for the Bulls.  Currently, the average price for South Florida vs. UConn football tickets is $38 with a get-in price of $12, according to ticket data provided by Easy Seat. Connecticut fans located down in Florida can find some great bargains on ticket prices so make sure to come out and show your support for the Huskies in enemy territory.

Following this weekend’s road game, the Huskies will return home for a matchup against the Temple Owls.  It will be the only home game until November 1st when the Central Florida Knights come to town.  They will then rotate between road and home games for the remainder of the season, culminating in the home finale on December 6th against SMU.

Tickets for Temple vs. UConn are a little pricier than the road contest at South Florida with the average price currently at $50 on the secondary market and a get-in price of $19. That is the cheapest game remaining on the 2014 UConn football schedule and 36% cheaper than their home average this year which currently stands at $68.

The Huskies will look to get back to .500 this week before their date with Temple on the 27th.  If they can, expect a small uptick in ticket prices, but nothing too drastic.
