UConn/Boise State Broadcast Set For ABC on September 13

Boise State Broncos vs UConn Huskies

ESPN and the American Athletic Conference have announced that the game between the UConn Huskies and Boise State Broncos at Rentschler Field on September 13 will be broadcast regionally on ABC.

For those interested in the game and don’t live in the regional broadcast area, the game will be shown on ESPN2. I’d also venture a guess that it will also be available on WatchESPN as well outside of the ABC broadcast area.

Beth Mowins, Joey Galloway and Paul Carcaterra will have the call.

Special Teams, Defense Bail Out UConn in 19-16 Win Over Stony Brook

UConn PR Deshon Foxx looks for the end zone ahead of him in the third quarter against the Stony Brook Seawolves on September 6, 2014 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

UConn PR #4 Deshon Foxx looks for the end zone ahead of him in the third quarter against the Stony Brook Seawolves on September 6, 2014 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

If it weren’t for the play of the UConn Huskies special teams and defense, Saturday’s game could have possibly been their second straight loss to an FCS school.

Deshon Foxx‘s 72 yard punt return in the third quarter change the momentum of the game and help the Huskies to a 19-16 win over the Stony Brook Seawolves in front of 23,543 fans at a very muggy Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

It’s the first career win for new head coach Bob Diaco as his team improves to 1-1. The Seawolves fall to 0-2.

Offensively UConn wasn’t able to do much as Stony Brook packed the defense in at the line.

Fortunately Foxx bailed them out after Seawolves punter Luke Allen boomed a 61 yard punt over his head. A good bounce went Foxx’s way and he and his blockers did the rest as he found the back of the end zone to put UConn up 19-10.

“Honestly, when it came off their punter’s foot I said to the guy next to me ‘he just outkicked his coverage’,” Diaco said. “That is a nightmare for the special teams coach when the punter hits a ball like that. It becomes a problem because now everything is on different levels.”

“I got a lucky bounce and I noticed I had a lot of space in front of me,” said Foxx. “I was just able to make one guy miss and then there it was.”

The UConn defense, especially the defensive line put constant pressure on Stony Brooks quarterbacks John Kinder and Conor Bednarski. They forced the duo to have to rush their passes or flushed them out of the pocket into short runs for little to no gain.

And while the defense did allow a touchdown that got the Seawolves to within three points, they forced them to use five minutes and 46 seconds of the clock on 14 plays. With two time outs left, Stony Brook was forced to go for the onsides kick but it was recovered by Geremy Davis.

UConn’s offense was then stopped but their defense stepped up again and forced the Seawolves out on downs late in the game to secure the win.

“The team today showed a lot of grit and grind,” said Diaco. “Our brotherhood and culture shined through and they were able to play hard for four quarters. They gave it all they had and finished strong.”

“They were able to withstand adversity early and not wilt and give it the old ‘here we go again’ mentality, which could easily plague a group. So the culture is growing and their lifestyles are strong as they are doing things the right way.”

I Thought

UConn head coach Bob Diaco looks up at a replay during the first quarter against the BYU Cougars on August 29, 2014 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

UConn Football head coach Bob Diaco is hoping for no “I thought” moments against Stony Brook this afternoon.

As the UConn Huskies enter today’s game with the Stony Brook Seawolves, UConn Football head coach Bob Diaco isn’t viewing them as an opponent. Instead, he’s viewing them as a partner in the Huskies getting better.

Each day, Diaco’s goal is to get better than the last one. So on Tuesday, I asked him what he wanted to see this week and he said a better Tuesday practice. You get the point.

With it being game day, one of those improvements he’d like to see is no “I thought” moments.

Watch below as Diaco explains what he means by an “I thought” moment:

Wolf Pack Sign Defenseman Steve Spinell to AHL Contract

HARTFORD, September 5, 2014: Hartford Wolf Pack general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the Wolf Pack has signed defenseman Steve Spinell to an AHL contract.

Hartford Wolf PackSpinell, a 23-year-old, 6-2, 210-pound native of Vernon Hills, IL, is entering his second year of pro hockey. As a rookie last season, Spinell saw action in seven AHL games with the Providence Bruins, going scoreless with two penalty minutes. In 58 games with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays, he scored one goal and added eight assists for nine points, and logged 108 PIM, tops among team defensemen and second-most overall on the club. Spinell also was a +3 and had 70 shots on goal, the second-highest total by a Stingray blueliner. In ECHL postseason action, he was scoreless with a team-high 16 PIM in four games.

Before entering the pro ranks, Spinell spent four seasons at Miami University (Ohio). In 149 career CCHA games, he totaled four goals and 32 assists for 36 points, plus 234 minutes in penalties.

The Wolf Pack will open the home portion of their 2014-15 AHL season Saturday, October 18 at the XL Center, hosting the Portland Pirates at 7:00 PM. To speak with a Wolf Pack representative about season or group tickets, or any of the Wolf Pack’s many ticketing options, call (855) 762-6451.

UConn QB Casey Cochran (12) drops back to pass in the second quarter on August 29, 2014 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT

During his weekly radio show on WTIC 1080-AM with Joe D’Ambrosio, UConn Huskies head coach Bob Diaco said that quarterback Casey Cochran is out for Saturday’s game against the Stony Brook Seawolves.

cochran

Chandler Whitmer will start and most likely get all of the snaps against the Seawolves. Diaco did state that Tim Boyle could play should Whitmer go down with an injury.

That will be an interesting situation to watch as Diaco did say when he announced the starting quarterbacks that he would like to redshirt Boyle this season if at all possible. He also said he wouldn’t hesitate to play him if need be.
