Bloguin Heisman Trophy Poll – Week 8

Bloguin Heisman TrophyEach week a group of Bloguin college football bloggers get together and put our votes in for the top Heisman Trophy candidates. Then after the votes are tabulated by Kevin over at College Football Zealots, the poll is released on Wednesday.

Here are the results for week seven of the 2011 college football season. Be sure to head over Crystal Ball Run for a full look at the results for the week for more insight on the poll.

  1. Andrew Luck (QB-Stanford) – 28 Points, 33.33%, 9 1st Place Votes
  2. Trent Richardson (RB-Alabama) – 22 Points, 26.19%, 2 1st Place Votes
  3. Kellen Moore (QB-Boise St) – 11 Points, 13.10%, 2 1st Place Votes
  4. Robert Griffin III (QB-Baylor)- 6 Points, 7.14%, 1 1st Place Vote
  • Also Receiving Votes: Robert Woods (WR- USC) 3 pts, Ryan Broyles (WR- Oklahoma) 3 pts, David Wilson (RB- Virginia Tech) 2 pts, Russell Wilson (QB- Wisconsin) 2 pts, Sammy Watkins (WR- Clemson) 2 pts, Brandon Weedon (QB- Oklahoma State) 2 pts, Tahj Boyd (QB- Clemson) 2 pts, Case Keenum (QB- Houston) 1 pt.
  • Dropped Out: Tyrann Mathieu (CB- LSU), LaMichael James (RB- Oregon)

In case you were wondering, this is how I voted in this week’s poll:

1. Andrew Luck – Luck stays at the top for me despite just an average night. He was 16-of-21 for 169 yards and two touchdowns. He really didn’t need to much as his offense racked up 446 yards on the ground in a Pac-12 romp over the Washington Huskies.

2.  Kellen Moore – Moore just continues to put up great numbers. In a closer than expected game with the Air Force Falcons, the Broncos QB  was 23-of-29 for 281 yards and three touchdowns.

3. Russell Wilson – You can’t blame Wilson for Saturday night’s loss to Michigan State. But he does drop here in my poll a spot due to the fact he threw two interceptions. He was 14-of-21 for 223 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown as well. His overall body of work keeps him in my top three.

Todman To Join Chargers Practice Squad

Jordan Todman #40 of the San Diego Chargers runs the ball against Orie Lemon #58 of the Dallas Cowboys during a preseason game at Cowboys Stadium on August 21, 2011 in Arlington, Texas.

It looks as though former UConn Huskies running back Jordan Todman has cleared waivers after being waived by the San Diego Chargers on Saturday.

According to NBCSanDiego.com, Todman will be signed to the Chargers practice squad. The move will be made official later in the week.

Todman was sixth round draft choice of the Chargers in the 2011 NFL Draft. He had not seen any action on the gridiron in five games before being waived. He did appear in the preseason for the Chargers as he had 28 rushes for 112 yards and nine receptions for 68 yards.

John Lackey To Undergo Tommy John Surgery; Out for 2012

There’s no secret that I do not like John Lackey one bit. No matter what people who have defended him this offseason about his antics, I just don’t think they have a place in Boston.

ohn Lackey #41 of the Boston Red Sox reacts as manager Terry Francona, not seen, walks to mound to remove Lacey during a game with the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park September 19, 2011 in Boston, Massachusetts.Sure I’d have loved to see Lackey wearing a different uniform next season. But the one thing you never want to wish is an injury upon someone.

Well Lackey will be back with the Red Sox in 2012. He just won’t pitch for them.

Early this morning, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reported that Lackey had visited Dr. Yocum in California about his ailing right elbow. And now during his press conference, new Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington announced that Lackey will have Tommy John surgery. No date for the surgery has been announced yet but it’s likely to come in the next week or so.

Lackey battled elbow problems all season long and it seems as though they were in fact the cause of his awful season. In 28 starts in 2011, Lackey was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA.

Red Sox name Ben Cherington Executive VP/General Manager

Here’s the release making what we’ve known for days official in regards to Ben Cherington being named the new Executive Vice President/General Manager of the Boston Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox today named Ben Cherington the team’s Executive Vice President/General Manager.

Boston Red SoxPresident/CEO Larry Lucchino made the announcement on behalf of the organization.

“Ben Cherington is one of the youngest ‘veterans’ in the game of baseball. He has already worked his way through every aspect of baseball operations, and over the years has gained a well-rounded set of experiences that will help him guide this franchise to its next World Championship. There is no one more prepared to take on the role of General Manager of the Red Sox than Ben,” said Lucchino. “He will hit the ground running, in full stride, and no one will outwork him.”

Cherington, who completed his 14th season in Major League Baseball and his 13th season in the Red Sox organization in 2011, has most recently served as Boston’s Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager since January 2009. In that role, he worked closely with Theo Epstein on all Major League personnel matters, including evaluation and analysis, player acquisition, and contract negotiation.

The 37-year-old Cherington previously held the position of Red Sox Vice President/Player Personnel beginning in January 2006. He oversaw amateur scouting and player development in addition to consulting on all Major League player acquisitions. While in charge of the club’s farm system, the Red Sox developed several players on the current Major League roster including Daniel Bard, Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie. Under his watch, Boston’s 2006 draft was named the best in the Majors by Baseball America.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Cherington acted as Red Sox co-General Manager, along with Jed Hoyer, from December 12, 2005 through January 19, 2006. In that time, the Red Sox completed a trade that brought Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston from the Florida Marlins.

He began his professional baseball career with the Cleveland Indians as an advance scout in 1998 and joined the Red Sox organization in 1999 as a Mid-Atlantic area scout before becoming a baseball operations assistant that May. Cherington has also served as Boston’s coordinator of international scouting, assistant director of player development and director of player development.

During Cherington’s tenure with the organization, the club has received numerous awards, including being named Sporting News’ Team of the Decade following the 2009 season.

A native of Meriden, NH, Cherington pitched for Lebanon (NH) High School and graduated with a degree in English from Amherst College, where he played four years of varsity baseball. He also spent a year as an assistant coach for his alma mater while working towards his Master’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts’ Sport Management Program.

Cherington sits on the advisory board for Good Sports, a Boston-based non-profit that distributes sports equipment to community organizations offering programs to disadvantaged youth, and has run the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon in support of the charity. He has also participated in the Pan-Mass Challenge, which benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the 9K Run to Home Base, which raises funds for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program.

Pitt is first in the Big East and ninth nationally (tied) in red zone efficiency. The Panthers have converted 22-of-24 trips (91.7%) in the red zone (17 touchdowns and five field goals). The two failed attempts were missed field goals.
