NESN Adds Jenny Dell, Matt Stairs To Red Sox Broadcast Team

NESN

As we learned from Chad Finn last week, NESN has added Jenny Dell to their Boston Red Sox broadcast team. NESN has also added Matt Stairs as a studio analyst.

Here’s the press release from NESN announcing the moves:

January 30, 2012 — NESN, New England’s most watched sports network, announced Monday that Jenny Dell will join the network as its Red Sox field reporter and Matt Stairs will join as a Red Sox studio analyst. Dell and Stairs will join NESN’s popular and talented Red Sox broadcast team that includes play-by-play voice Don Orsillo , color commentator Jerry Remy , studio host Tom Caron , and the network’s trio of Hall of Famers Dennis Eckersley, Jim Rice and Peter Gammons , who all serve as studio analysts.

Jenny Dell
Dell comes to NESN from ESPN where she served in several different roles, including on-air reporter. The University of Massachusetts graduate has reported from the last two Super Bowls and delivered AccuScore reports for ESPN.com. She also has experience behind the camera, working since 2008 at several different high profile events and programs for ESPN, including Major League Baseball (MLB), Monday Night Football , National Basketball Association (NBA) and NASCAR coverage. Dell, a Connecticut native, will begin working for NESN in February.

“Jenny is smart, resourceful and displays a professional approach to reporting,” said Sean McGrail , NESN’s President and CEO. “Her ability to connect with viewers makes her the ideal choice to join Don and Jerry as part of our Red Sox coverage this season.”

Matt Stairs
Stairs retired in 2011 after a 19-year MLB career with a record 12 teams, including one year with the Red Sox (1995). He finished with a .262 career batting average while slugging 265 home runs and 899 RBIs. He holds the major league record for pinch-hit home runs in a career with 23. A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, Stairs played for Canada in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. He currently resides in Bangor, Maine, where he serves as an assistant coach for the local high school hockey team.

“Matt brings incredible passion for the game of baseball and a great sense of humor,” said McGrail. “He adds a unique perspective since he has played with or against most of the current major league players, including one year with Adrian Gonzalez in San Diego.”

Red Sox on NESN
On Feb. 19, NESN begins 46 days of live coverage from the Red Sox new Spring Training home JetBlue Park in Ft. Myers, Florida. In addition, this Thursday, Feb. 2, at 10 p.m., NESN will broadcast the Red Sox Town Hall, which is being held on Feb. 1 in Worcester, Mass. NESN’s Tom Caron will host new Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine and Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington for an interactive conversation in front of approximately 800 fans at Worcester Technical High School.  Fans not at the event can submit questions in advance at NESN.com/TownHall or via Twitter by sending a tweet to @NESN and including the hashtag #TownHall.

Tiffany Hayes Named Big East Player of the Week

It should come as no surprise after her performance last week that UConn Huskies women’s basketball senior guard Tiffany Hayes was named Big East Player of the Week.

Here’s the release:

STORRS, Conn. – Senior guard Tiffany Hayes earned her first BIG EAST weekly accolade of her senior season as she was tabbed the BIG EAST Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. This marks the senior’s first Player of the Week nod of her career after bringing home three Freshman of the Week accolades in 2009.

Tiffany Hayes comes down with one of her ten rebounds over South Florida forward Tiffany Conner. Hayes receives the award after a superb week where she tallied back-to-back 30-plus performances in wins over Syracuse and South Florida in a 2-0 week for the Huskies. Hayes has scored 68 points over UConn’s last two games, marking the most points a Husky has scored in back-to-back contests all-time. The record for most points in consecutive games had been held by former All-American Kerry Bascom who scored 65 points in back-to-back contests during the 1990-91 campaign.

Hayes averaged 34.0 points per game but she also averaged 8.5 rebounds per game, and shot 70 percent from the field in a dynamic week.

The Winter Haven, Fla. native scored a career-high 35 points on 11-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-8 from long-range, and grabbed seven rebounds while dishing-out three assists in the victory at Syracuse. Hayes also buried all seven of her attempts from the charity stripe in 31-minutes of action against the Orange. She followed that up with a 33-point, 10-rebound effort in the victory over USF on Saturday. The 33 came on 10-of-15 shooting and the double-double was her second this season. Hayes also made 11 of her 13 attempts from the free throw line, dished-out three assists and posted three steals against the Bulls.

The Huskies return to the court on Monday, Jan. 30, to take on No. 5 Duke at 7 p.m. in Durham, N.C. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

In The Red Zone: Super Bowl Edition – 1/30

NY Giants @ New England Patriots Super Bowl XLVI

With the Super Bowl quickly approaching there’s lots of little nuggets and tidbits of information you may have missed so this is our attempt at trying to keep you informed of the minutia.

Let me know what you think about the rematch, I’m interested in your thoughts I’d love to use some in another post.  You can leave them in the comments of this post, email them to me or tweet them to me.  I look forward to your opinions regardless of what team you root for.

A Hartford, CT animal control officer was one of the winners of the Patriots “Super Bowl for Super People” contest.

Patriots G Donald Brown has a rubber ducky collection and he plans on taking them to Indianapolis.

Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez has played for some famous coaches, Bill Belichick, Urban Meyer and UConn’s Geno Auriemma.

Gifts were all around in the Patriots locker room this weekend before leaving for Indianapolis.  Apparently QB Tom Brady bought each player a pair of the Uggs Boots he endorses, while WR Chad Ochocinco bought 70 pairs of Dr. Dre’s Beats Headphones, valued at $400 each, for all the players and coaches.  That’s $28,000 worth of headphones.

Here is a picture of the Lucas Oil Stadium field with the end zones and logos painted.

Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht lost out on the general managers job with Chicago Bears, who selected Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery.  Emery, a former area scout for the Bears, has worked with former Patriots execs Thomas Dimitroff in Atlanta and Scott Pioli in Kansas City.

They have temporarily changed the name of the street outside of Lucas Oil Stadium to “Patriots Path”.

The Patriots reported that 25,000 fans attended the send off rally on Sunday at Gillette Stadium prior to the team leaving for Indianapolis.

OL Nick McDonald went to the Super Bowl last season with Green Bay and won a ring, this year he gets to go back with the Patriots in search of a second one.

Two flawed teams will be playing in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday in Indy.

Ever wondered how Brady responds from multiple interception games?

James Ihedigbo was meant to be with the Patriots.

Former Patriots safety and now NBC Sports studio analyst Rodney Harrison says the Patriots will need their best game.

Giants WR Mario Manningham can’t wait to face Patriots two way player Julian Edelman.

Where are the 2001 Patriots now?

New England special teamers are primed for the challenge of the Giants at Super Bowl XLVI.

Evidently Patriots T Matt Light gets under the skin of Giants DE Osi Umenyiora.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick turned up the heat in the teams practice facility this week and this is why.

The Twitter feed of the Indianapolis Host Committee is @SuperBowl2012.  It’s a great resource if you’re in town for the game, you can find information there and they even answer your questions.

A relaxed Bill Belichick led the media parade after the Patriots arrived in Indianapolis on Sunday night.

Pro Football Talk says TE Rob Gronkowski will likely play on Sunday but will probably need arthroscopic surgery after the Super Bowl.

New England has set their practice schedule for the week.

The Patriots will face the New York Giants on February 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium in Super Bowl XLVI.  Look for the Sox & Dawgs “In The Red Zone Game Preview” available this Friday.

NCAA Responds To Boatright’s Lawyers Statement

Earlier on Sunday morning, the laywer for Tanesha Boatright, the mother of UConn Huskies freshman point guard Ryan Boatright, released a statement about the NCAA’s release of personal info with their statement.

NCAANow the NCAA has once again responded turning this into a case of he said, she said.

Here’s the lastest statement from the NCAA:

Scott Tompsett’s allegations are not accurate. The NCAA statement regarding Ryan Boatright is factual and in response to numerous public misstatements and the resulting inaccurate reporting by some media. The NCAA acted appropriately to ensure the misleading accounts did not continue. The NCAA did not violate the student-athlete or family’s privacy in anyway, nor did it imply that the benefits were used to influence Ryan Boatright to attend the University of Connecticut.

In fact, both UConn and Boatright should be commended for their cooperation throughout the process to gather information. The school and student-athlete’s dedication to uncover the facts should be viewed as a positive example, not somehow construed negatively. Had Boatright’s mother cooperated fully from the beginning, this matter could have been settled months ago.

I’m fully expecting Tompsett to respond to this again at some point on Sunday.

My problem is that while the NCAA released their statement to the public, Tompsett probably shouldn’t have responded by sending the email to the media. Yes, I understand he wanted to get his side of the story out there.

But this would be better handled privately instead of in the media. And at least for now, that’s not happening.

The Boatright family has been through enough as it is.
