Video: Jon Lester Reacts To Being Named 2012 Opening Day Starter

Earlier on Monday, Boston Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine named Jon Lester as his starter for the opener against the Detroit Tigers on April 5th. It’s the second straight year that Lester has started on Opening Day.

Valentine also announced that Josh Beckett will follow in the next game and barring a rainout, Beckett is in line to start the home opener on April 13th against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Here’s Lester’s reaction to the news:

Red Sox Spring Training Delight – 3/19

Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz delivers against the Tampa Bay Rays during the first inning of a spring training baseball game in Port Charlotte, Fla., Sunday, March 18, 2012.

As we move closer to the start of the 2012 MLB season, pitchers are throwing more pitches in games as they build up their arm strength. But when you’re facing a divisional opponent, you need to show them something a little different than what you might normally do during the regular season.

That’s what Boston Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz did on Sunday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays, a team he’ll probably face 3-5 times this season. Buchholz threw 76 pitches, 58 for strikes in his team’s 8-4 win over the Rays.

We all know Buchholz has a nice changeup in his repertoire but he stayed away from it for the most part on Sunday, using his curve and cutter more. His curveball was probably his best pitch and was as good as I’ve seen it.

The most important thing though is the health of his back. He’s definitely not showing any ill effects from last year’s back injury and that is good news. If he can stay healthy for the entire season, that can only mean good things for the Red Sox pitching staff.

We’re still not any closer to having any idea of who will be the fourth and fifth starters for the Red Sox this season but we do know that Carlos Silva won’t be a part of it. He was released by the Red Sox on Saturday after missing most of the spring with shoulder inflammation.

With Carl Crawford out for the time being, there’s still some competition for the outfield spots. And with Ryan Sweeney nursing an injury, it looks as though Cody Ross could win the starting RF job.  Ross is putting together a nice little spring as he is hitting .455 after going 1-for-2 with a home run on Sunday.

The position battles will be something to watch over the final 2½ weeks of spring training.

Can Jose Iglesias win the starting shortstop position? Who will join Jacoby Ellsbury in the outfield on opening day? Who will be the final two starters in the rotation? Who will be in the bullpen with Andrew Bailey and Mark Melancon?

That’s what we need to be watching for.

But one thing we don’t need to be watching for anymore is who will be the Red Sox starter on Opening Day in Detroit. That honor will go to Jon Lester as Bobby Valentine made the announcement before today’s game. Josh Beckett is in line to start the home opener barring a rainout.

UConn Women’s 2012 NCAA Second Round Pregame Quotes

In preparation for tomorrow’s matchup with the Kansas State Wildcats in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, UConn Huskies players Kelly Faris, Bria Hartley and Stefanie Dolson along with head coach Geno Auriemma met with the media.

2012 NCAA Women's Final FourHere are the quotes courtesy of UConn Athletics:

Kelly Faris, Junior, Guard

On how your routine life changes during tournament time

Life is definitely much busier. We miss class more than usual, we stay in study hall to stay on top of our school work, but mainly the most we miss out of our life routine is school. We try to keep it as normal as possible.

Bria Hartley, Sophomore, Guard

On how you routine life changes during tournament time

Like Kelly said, we are a lot busier. We try to keep up with school work, but we learn to manage. We have free time to get our work done, so when we get on the court we are focused on basketball.

Stefanie Dolson, Sophomore, Center

On preparing for Kansas State

We feel good. We know we have to be focused on ourselves. Mostly we just need to want to stay focused on our game plan.

On having only one day of rest

We feel good, and know exactly what we have to do. We know what we have to do coming into the game. So we must stay focused.

To see what Geno had to say, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

Head Coach Geno Auriemma

Opening Statement:

“There’s not much to say. Those of you that were here yesterday, we talked about trying to build some momentum going into this thing and hopefully we can carry what we did in the second half of yesterday’s game forward and play well tomorrow night against a team that’s a lot different from the one we played yesterday. Hopefully, we can play a good, solid 40 minutes of basketball. This tournament is all about the mindset you bring in and whether you are ready mentally.”

On Finally Playing Kansas State; A Team That Has Been In UConn’s Bracket 5 of the Last 11 Seasons:

“I didn’t realize that was the number of times they have been in our bracket. I’ve known Deb [Kansas State head coach Patterson] a long time. She was one of my assistants on the national team. Each year, they play their style of play. It’s been consistent. The program is built around their defense. They play great defense. They don’t try and do a lot of things. They are very patient. They are always disciplined every year, and they try and force you to play their style by controlling the tempo, and I’m sure tomorrow it will be the same thing.”

On What Are Some Of The Areas He Would Like To See His Team Tighten Up Heading Into Tomorrow Night’s Game:

“I think for us it’s always the same. No matter where or when we play, our defense has been really good for the most part. But we seem to spend a lot of our time at practice or getting ready for games trying to figure out offensively what works best. This just isn’t one of those years where we can count on going out and getting 85 points on a regular basis. We have to work a little bit harder offensively, so I think for tomorrow it’s going to be all about that. We need to make sure we get the right shots at the right times. The deeper you go into the tournament, the less you can afford to have bad possessions. I think we need to make sure we are all in synch on the offensive end because our defense is going to be OK.”

On Why It Seems In The Women’s NCAA Tournament The Higher Seeded Team Usually Wins As Opposed To What Happens In The Men’s NCAA Tournament :

“I think teams are closer now than they have been in the past. I still think you are going to have a difficult time of a 16 beating a 1-seed or a 15-seed beating a 2-seed. That’s still hard. That’s still hard on the men’s side too. What makes it more difficult on the women’s side is that there aren’t any one seeds or two seeds that have a lot of freshman or sophomores in key spots, so you are always playing against an experienced team, although we [UConn] might be an exception. That’s not always the case on the men’s side. On the men’s side, a lot of the top seeds are doing it with young, inexperienced guys that can get knocked off by a team with four of five juniors and seniors. That’s not the case in women’s basketball as kids don’t go anywhere. If you transfer that to the men’s side and all those kids at Kentucky stay, you’re not beating them for a few years, but now they will probably have a new team next year. That’s just going to keep happening on the men’s side, so those upsets will keep happening. On our side you have to beat the best teams with the best players and they are there for three or four years. It makes things very difficult for lower seeds. You can look at the women’s Final Four, and rarely can you say how the hell did that team get there? That doesn’t happen on the men’s side. On the women’s side it seems like every year to get to the Sweet 16, you have to beat one of the best eight teams in the country. And to get the Final Four, you probably have to beat one of the top four teams in the country.”

Connecticut Whale 5, Portland Pirates 4 (SO)

By Brian Ring

Hartford, CT, March 18, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale defeated the Portland Pirates, 5-4 in a shootout, Sunday afternoon at the XL Center in a wild affair. Connecticut twice rallied from behind to defeat the Pirates, with Tommy Grant picking up a pro career-high four points for the Whale (2-2-4).

CT WhaleJonathan Audy-Marchessault also scored twice for the Whale, while Ethan Werek tallied twice for the visiting Pirates.

Combined with Bridgeport’s defeat against the Worcester Sharks, the Whale moved four points ahead of the Sound Tigers in the Northeast Division standings.

“I give the guys full credit,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander. “Three games in three days on a Sunday, but they stuck with it to get the goal with two minutes remaining.”

Andy Miele put the Pirates ahead 1-0 at the 5:40 mark of the first period, capitalizing on hard work in the corner. Mathieu Beaudoin got the puck to Miele, who was knocked down but gathered the puck and shot it over Whale goaltender Cam Talbot (36 saves) for his 13th goal of the season.

The Whale would tie the game just 58 seconds into the second period, when Grant finished off a quality pass from Kelsey Tessier. Tessier found Grant on the doorstep of the Portland cage, and Grant wristed a shot past Portland goaltender Peter Mannino (38 saves).

Audy-Marchessault would put the Whale up, 2-1, under a minute later, as he converted a Grant drop pass at 1:56. His wrist shot snuck through Mannino for Audy-Marchessault’s 21st goal of the season.

Grant would strike again with his second goal, and third point, of the period with 5:01 left to play in the second. Tessier won an offensive zone draw straight to Grant, who fired a shot past Mannino for the 3-1 advantage.

The Pirates would then close to within 3-2, as former Rangers prospect Ethan Werek scored off a rebound from Alexandre Bolduc 5:13 into the third period. Ryan Duncan also assisted on the goal, the sixth of the season for Werek.

Ashton Rome would tie the game for Portland on the power-play at 7:30, with his slapshot from the point eluding the glove of Talbot for the equalizer. Tyler Eckford and Nick Ross both assisted on the goal, Rome’s eighth.

Werek would score again to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead at the 14:06 mark, as he finished off his own rebound after Talbot made several good saves on close-range opportunities. The puck was not cleared, however, and Werek flipped it up and over the pads of Talbot for his second goal of the day.

Audy-Marchessault would send the game to overtime with his second goal of the game with 2:05 remaining, with Grant picking up his fourth point of the night with an assist.

Neither team would mount much attack in overtime, as the game yet again went to the shootout for Connecticut. Brendan Bell and Casey Wellman would both score in the tie-breaker, which, combined with a perfect performance from Talbot on four shots, sent the Whale to a 5-4 win, their second in three games on the weekend.

The same two teams renew acquaintances at the XL Center Friday, in the next action for both clubs (7:00 PM faceoff).

Springfield Falcons 3, Connecticut Whale 0

By Brian Ring

March 17, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale were defeated by the Springfield Falcons, 3-0, Saturday night at the XL Center. Springfield goaltender Mike Clemente, making just his second professional start, recorded his first pro shutout with 27 saves.

CT WhaleNick Drazenovic scored and had an assist to lead the Falcons offense, while the Whale were blanked for the third time this season.

“It was disappointing,” said Whale head coach Ken Gernander, who felt the team did not have enough urgency in the first two periods.

“Not until the third period, but by then we were short-staffed and we’d already given them the lead.”

The first period was scoreless, with special teams playing a large role in a frame that saw large chunks of the game played in transition. The Whale negated three Springfield power-play opportunities, while Clemente helped the visitors to kill off two Connecticut extra-man chances.

Nick Drazenovic gave the Falcons the first lead of the game 7:31 into the second period, converting on the power-play for his eighth goal of the season. Wade MacLeod fed Drazenovic from across the slot, with Drazenovic one-timing the pass past Whale goaltender Chad Johnson (20 saves). Dalton Prout picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

Springfield would make the goal stand up as the game-winner, as they went on to score twice more in the period while continuing to limit quality Whale chances.

The Falcons would make it 2-0 at 14:21 of the second period, when Matt Calvert snapped a shot over the glove of Johnson for his 15th goal of the season, from Brent Regner and Drazenovic.

Maksim Mayorov would send Springfield into the third period with a 3-0 lead, as he sent a wrist shot through the legs of Whale defenseman Wade Redden, and in off of Johnson’s right pad, for his ninth goal three minutes later. The score came unassisted.

That would be all of the scoring for Springfield, who won their second straight game after defeating Portland on Friday night.

The Whale are back in action Sunday afternoon at the XL Center, finishing their three-games-in-three-days slate with afternoon tilt against the Portland Pirates (3:00).

Video: UConn Women Spank Prairie View A&M 83-47 To Advance in NCAA Tourney

The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team came into this 2012 NCAA Tournament as an underdog. When the NCAA Selection Show was held last Monday, there was barely a mention of UConn other than when they were announced as a No. 1 seed.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis of UConn led the Huskies with 21 points angainst Lereahn Washington and Prairie View A&M.So hopefully the Huskies can use that to their advantage on their way to a potential 8th national title. They opened up the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Saturday with the Prairie View A&M Panthers.

The Huskies were able to use the height they have to their advantage and a strong second half defensive effort helped them to a 83-47 win over the Panthers in front of 4,563 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT.

UConn advances to the second round on Monday where they’ll take on the Kansas State Wildcats.

Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis led the way for the Huskies (30-4) with 21 points. Those 21 points tie former Husky and current Cincinnati coach Jamelle Elliott for the most by a freshman making their NCAA Tournament debut. KML also led the Huskies with seven rebounds.

Bria Hartley added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists while Stefanie Dolson scored all 15 of her points in the first half. She also had a little bit of an incident towards the end of the game when she was kneed in her private lady parts. Kelly Faris had a great all around game as usual with six points, six rebounds and a team-high eight assists.

Latia Williams paced the Panthers (17-16) with 20 points. JaQuandria Williams added nine points while Kiara Etienne had eight. Larissa Scott led Prairie View A&M with seven rebounds to go along with her four points.

Video: UConn’s Stefanie Dolson Takes Knee To Her Private Lady Parts

We often see men’s college basketball players get hit or kicked in their private parts, especially when they take a charge. But we rarely ever see a women’s college basketball player get hit in her private area.

Well that’s exactly what happened to UConn Huskies women’s sophomore center Stefanie Dolson on Saturday afternoon in UConn’s 83-47 win over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

Dolson was okay after the incident and was seen laughing with her teammates after it happened.
