Klassen’s Play on the Blueline a Plus for Whale

By Bob Crawford

The stat sheet from Sunday’s 10-2 loss to Springfield was one that the Connecticut Whale coaches probably wanted to burn and never look at again, but there was one positive on the Whale side.

CT WhaleThat was next to the name of defenseman Sam Klassen, who was +1 in the game, the only player on the Whale team who ended the night on the plus side.

It wasn’t like Klassen was nailed to the bench, either.  He played a regular shift, and was not on the ice for any of the Falcons’ 10 goals.

The second-year pro did not take any solace from that stat, though.

“I’m not going to comment much on that,” Klassen said Thursday after the Whale’s practice at Champions Skating Center in Cromwell, CT.  “It was a team loss, and we’ve got to respond from Sunday night.”

And how do the Whale, as a group, go about responding to that ugly defeat, with a rematch against the Falcons looming Friday night in Springfield?

“You learn from that game,” Klassen said, “and you take that feeling, that embarrassing feeling, from Sunday night’s game and you bring it into the week of practices, and you work that much harder and make sure that doesn’t happen again.

“We definitely focused on our systems, D-zone (defensive zone) systems and neutral-zone systems, and just kind of went to the board and did some X’s and O’s, stuff like that, for sure, but what it really comes down to is a matter of making things happen in a game.  We hopefully can take these good practices that we had this week and carry them right into the weekend.”

While the Whale had won four straight games going into Sunday, some danger signs had been evident in the two games immediately preceding the 10-2 meltdown.  In Friday’s 2-1 shootout win in Albany, Connecticut had been outshot 44-16 and needed a great performance in goal from Cam Talbot to get the two points, and in a 6-3 home victory the previous Saturday against Providence, the Whale were outshot by a margin of 40-23.

“Friday night’s game, we were lucky to get those two points,” said Klassen.  “Cam played amazing for us, and he definitely stole the game for us.  And some of those bad habits probably carried into Sunday’s game, and it came back to bite us in the butt there.”

On the other hand, just about all of the bounces that had been going the Whale’s way in the previous two games went against them on Sunday.  The Whale’s goal going into this weekend is not to leave so much up to the bounce of the puck.

“Going into Friday night’s game, we obviously want to be physical,” Klassen said.  “They’ve (Springfield) got some real skilled forwards up front, so the more you can by physical, the better.

“We did a lot of D-zone coverage this week, just focusing on making that first good pass and keeping things simple.  The more simple they are, the easier it is.”

That last sentence seems to sum up Klassen’s approach to the game quite well.  He is a no-frills kind of player, the type of defenseman who you know is playing well when you don’t notice him.  In order to progress, though, beyond where he has been his first two pro seasons, in which he has been back and forth between the Whale and the ECHL, Klassen is seeking to diversify his game somewhat.

“Something that I’m always working on is my shot,” he said.  “Since I’m not a very offensive D-man, it’s something I’m always trying to improve, trying to jump up in the play a little more, try to get involved off the rush once in a while.  But I know my strengths and my weaknesses, so you always try to improve on your weaknesses and stick to your strengths in a game.”

As he looks to do that, Klassen has taken advantage of the tutelage of two different Whale assistant coaches, J.J. Daigneault and Jeff Beukeboom, who were both highly successful defensemen as pro players.  Beukeboom is new to the Whale this year, after Daigneault earned an assistant-coaching job with the Montreal Canadiens this past summer, and Beukeboom has shown an approach that is slightly different, but just as helpful for Klassen’s development.

“J.J.’s approach was very offensive,” Klassen said.  “Jeff maybe not so much, but he’s always encouraging us to jump up in the play and get involved, pinching on the O-zone and getting involved in the play.  So that’s always something that we’re trying to do.”

Juan Nieves Named Red Sox Pitching Coach

New Boston Red Sox skipper John Farrell continues to build his coaching staff as it was announced on Wednesday the team has hired Juan Nieves as their new pitching coach.

Here's the release from the Red Sox:

Boston – The Boston Red Sox today named Juan Nieves as the club’s Major League pitching coach.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington and Manager John Farrell made the announcement.

Boston Red SoxNieves, who was born in Puerto Rico and graduated from Avon Old Farms High School in Connecticut, comes to the Red Sox after 14 seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization.  He has served as the White Sox’ bullpen coach the past five years (2008-2012).

“It became very clear that Juan was not only a talented pitching coach, but one I feel very comfortable with in working with our pitching staff,” said Farrell.  “I have known him for many years, and I have a high level of comfort with his in-game communication.”

Working with long-time pitching coach Don Cooper, he helped tutor a White Sox pitching staff that, over the past five years, posted the sixth-best ERA in the American League (4.08).  The bullpen’s 3.88 ERA ranked fifth.  The pitching staff also set club records in strikeouts each of the past three years.

In 2012, he oversaw a Chicago bullpen that included setup man Nate Jones, who went 8-0 with a 2.39 ERA, and closer Addison Reed, who tied for seventh in the AL with 29 saves.  They were two of eight rookies in the Chicago bullpen (before September).  The Sox’ pitching staff set a franchise mark with 1,246 strikeouts this past season, and the bullpen set a record with 479 strikeouts in 2011.

Before becoming the White Sox’ bullpen coach, Nieves was a pitching coach in Chicago’s system at Rookie-level Tucson (1999-2001), Double-A Birmingham (2002-04), and Triple-A Charlotte (2005-07).

In 2002, he was the pitching coach for the Southern League West Division All-Star Team, and in 2006 he served as the World Team pitching coach in the All-Star Futures Game in Pittsburgh.

Nieves, 47, began his coaching career in the Yankees organization, holding the positions of pitching coach with Rookie-level Tampa (1992), Short-A Oneonta (1993) and Single-A Greensboro (1994, 1996), and pitching coordinator with Double-A Norwich (1995).  He served as the general manager/manager for Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League in 1998-99.

Signed by Milwaukee in 1983, Nieves became the first pitcher in Brewers history and first native of Puerto Rico to throw a no-hitter when he accomplished the feat at age 22 on April 15, 1987 against the Orioles in Baltimore.  The left-hander compiled a 32-25 record with one save, a 4.71 ERA and 352 strikeouts in 94 games (81 starts) with Milwaukee from 1986-88.  He set career-highs with 14 wins, 195.2 innings, and 163 strikeouts in 1987, when he ranked fifth in the American League with an average of 7.5 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched.  He tied for fourth in the AL with three shutouts as a rookie in 1986.

Nieves is in Avon Old Farms High School’s Hall of Fame.  He compiled a career record of 19-1 with a 1.05 ERA in three years at the school from 1980-83 and, in addition to baseball, captained the cross-country and basketball teams.

Easley Promoted To Bills 53-Man Roster

Marcus Easley #81 of the Buffalo Bills carries the ball during the game against the Minnesota Vikings on August 17, 2012 at Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

After spending the 2010 and 2011 seasons on the Buffalo Bills injured reserve, Stratford, CT native and former UConn Huskies wide receiver Marcus Easley will finally get his chance to play in the NFL.

Easley, who was cut before the season and then signed to the Bills practice squad, was promoted from the practice squad on Tuesday to the Bills 53-man roster.

He was a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2010 but missed the 2010 season with a knee injury suffered in the preseason.  He was inactive for the first game of the 2011 season and was then placed on the injured reserve list with a heart ailment.

Easley made three catches for 35 yards during the 2012 preseason before being cut.

Whether he's active or not for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots remains to be seen but it is nice to see Easley finally get his chance.
