A Patriots Post Mortem

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) and teammates walk off the field during the second half of an NFL divisional football playoff game against the New York Jets in Foxborough, Mass., Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011.

Well I guess it’s time to look back on the New England Patriots 2011 season.  A season, which by all accounts, was supposed to be more of a rebuilding year turned into a wonderful regular season that ended once again too early with a disappointing playoff loss.  And a home playoff loss at that.

Back in the preseason I predicted the Patriots for 12-4 with a 7-1 record at home, 5-3 on the road, 5-1 in the division and 9-3 in the conference.  I had them losing to the Jets on the road, which they did.  I also had them taking back to back loses against the Ravens in Foxboro and the Chargers in San Diego.  They actually won those games.  I had their fourth loss in Chicago, which turned out to be a blow out win.  This would have given them the AFC East title in a tie break with the Jets and the #3 AFC seed.  I had them winning in the wildcard card weekend, but losing in the division weekend, right where they bowed out.    So for predictions I thought I did pretty well.

In reality, they finished 14-2 with an 8-0 home record, 6-2 on the road, 5-1 in the division and 10-2 in the conference.  Their only losses were Week 2 at the Jets 28-14 and the disturbing blowout loss at Cleveland in Week 9, 34-14.  They won the division and earned the top AFC seed and got a wildcard weekend bye.  They then lost to the Jets 28-21 in the division round.

As Patriots fans we are all disappointed in how the season ended with what was a pretty poor showing in the playoffs for the second consecutive year.  What we have to realize is that this team, especially on the defensive side of the ball is very young.

Defensively three starters this season were rookies.  CB Devin McCourty, LB Brandon Spikes and LB/DE Jermaine Cunningham.  After that you have many players with only 2 or 3 years in the league like CB Darius Butler, S Brandon Meriweather, LB Jerod Mayo, LB Rob Ninkovich and others.  The defense did a good job growing into the themselves and getting better as the season progressed.  In fact over the last five weeks of the regular season they went from being ranked 22nd in scoring defense to finishing 8th.

To continue reading, click on the read more button below if you’re on the home page.

They had outstanding contributions from Mayo who led the NFL in tackles and McCourty who was second in INTs to Wilfork who was the true big man in the middle.

Special teams wise this team was well, special.  They had eight non-offensive TD’s this season two of them were KORTD’s, there was a punt return TD, a blocked FG returned for a TD and a blocked punt returned for a TD.  S Patrick Chung, WR Matthew Slater and WR Brandon Tate were exciting to watch all season long.

On offense they were record setting.  nine consecutive games with 30 points scored, eight of them in a row without a turnover.  Probable NFL MVP QB Tom Brady had a 9:1 TD to INT ratio and went an NFL record 335 pass attempts without a pick, throwing only four all season.  The team itself had only 10 turnovers all season establishing a new NFL record.  They played better than expected and we got sucked in.

In the end they just weren’t good enough to get deep into the playoffs.  I heard someone say they remind him of the New York Yankees.  They haven’t won in a while but they’re always lurking, always dangerous to make that run.  They always have a good season and are just a few moves away from a great one.  I believe that the next three seasons maybe the greatest you will ever see a New England team have.  They have the best QB. They’re sold at WR although they do need a deep a threat and getting Chad Ochocinco from Cincinnati or drafting A.J. Green (Georgia) would do them a world of good.  They have two solid backs in BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead and hopefully Kevin Faulk is back.  They also have some fantastic young TE’s that are here for a while as well in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Defensively thought, they need a pass rusher badly.  Someone to terrorize opposing QBs off the edge.  They need a James Harrison; they need a Dwight Freeney; a Julius Peppers.  The back end of the defense in the linebacking and secondary is young and solid as is the kicking game.  This team is good.  This team is just a few moves away from being great.   I trust Bill Belichick will make them so.

In The Red Zone

This Week

The Line/Prediction

As of Thursday the line on the game from Yahoo! Sports is Patriots minus 9. The over/under is 45. My prediction is Patriots 34, Jets, 21. Give the points (Patriots) and take the over. I am 9-5-2 against the spread and 12 of 16 on calling the over/under in 2010.

Tickets

The Patriots are reporting the game as a sell out. It is the 181st consecutive sellout dating back to the 1994 season opener. The record includes preseason, regular season and playoff games.

The Patriots are 21-14 overall in the playoffs including 8-5 in AFC Divisional Round.

They have beaten the Jets twice in the playoffs.  In the 1985 Wild Card round they won in New York 26-14 on their way to the franchises first Super Bowl appearance and in the 2006 Wild Card round they won 37-16 in Foxboro.

New England is 11-2 at home in the playoffs.  The only losses were last season to Baltimore and in 1978 to Houston.

The Patriots have won the AFC East 8 times since 2000.

Patriots Staff Notes:

This is the link to head coach Bill Belichick’s Wednesday press conference on the Jets.

Bill Belichick is 16-9 in his career against the Jets. He is 15-8 against them as the head coach in New England and that includes one playoff win in 2006.

Overall in his NFL career Belichick is 162-94 in 15 NFL seasons. He is 126-50 with New England and 36-44 with Cleveland. He is 15-5 in the playoffs, 14-4 as the head coach of the Patriots in the postseason. When you combine the regular season and postseason Belichick is 177-99.

Belichick after a bye week in the playoffs in 4-0, he is 9-2 after a bye week in the regular season.

Patriots Players Notes:

This is Tom Brady’s 11th NFL season, he is 14-4 against the Jets, including 1-0 in the playoffs.

Overall Brady is 111-32 as a starting QB and is 14-4 in the playoffs for an overall record of 125-36. Brady is a 5 time Pro Bowl QB, was NFL MVP in 2007 and won 3 Super Bowls while twice being named the games MVP. He was recently named as the 21st Greatest Player in NFL History by the NFL Network.

He extended his NFL record to 9 consecutive games with 2 TD passes and 0 INTs.

Brady’s 261 TD passes in his career ties him for 10th all-time with former Seattle QB Dave Kreig.

Brady lead the NFL with 36 TD passes and only 4 INTs.

He was just the 6th QB in a 16 game season to have at least 1 TD pass every game.

Brady had gone 11 starts without an INT (335 attempts).  His last one was a end of regulation Hail Mary against the Ravens. This is a regular season record.  Anything he does in playoffs will have no bearing on the record.

Brady was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for December.

Brady is also nominated for the FedEx Air Player of the Year Award.  He is nominated along with San Diego QB Phillip Rivers and Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers.  You can cast your vote until Friday January 28th at 9 p.m.

EPSN’s Trent Dilfer expects Brady “to unleash hell on the Jets” after all the comments.

CB Devin McCourty is one of five finalists for NFL Rookie of the YearIt’s a fan vote, so vote early, vote often!

LB Brandon Spikes returns to play this weekend after a four game league suspension.

NT Vince Wilfork was fined $10,000 for his hit on Dolphins QB Chad Henne in Week 17.

DL Brandon Deadrick has had his suspension lifted by the team.

DL Mike Wright was placed on IR and DL Atiyyah Ellison was released.

The NFL Hall of Fame finalists have been announced and former Patriot and Jet RB Curtis Martin is among them.

Was Wes Welker dissing Rex Ryan in his press conference on Thursday?

What did Joe Theismann call Danny Woodhead?

The Patriots have 2 New England natives on the roster (DL Ron Brace -Worcester MA and TE Aaron Hernandez – Bristol CT) and they have 5 players who played for a college in New England or a Big East member team. They are: DL Ron Brace -BC; CB Darius Butler – UConn; OL Dan Koppen – BC; CB Devin McCourty – Rutgers; OL Quinn Ojinnaka – Syracuse and LB Brandon McGowan – Maine (IR). . DL Vince Wilfork played for Miami when they were a conference member, DL Mike Wright played for Cincinnati and WR Deion Branch played at Louisville but they were in Conference USA at that time.

News from this weeks opponent

Jets Team Notes:

Here is the Jets Roster; Depth Chart and Injury List.

2010 Jets schedule/results

The Jets all time record is 351-413-8 and they are 11-12 in the playoffs, with their last appearance before this season coming after the the 2009.  Last season they lost to Indianapolis 30-17 in the AFC Championship Game. The Jets last appeared in the Super Bowl following the 1968 season and defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7 to win Super Bowl III. At that time it a considered the biggest upset in sports history.

They beat Indianapolis on the road last week in the Wild Card round.

New York has lost 13 of the last 17 meetings against New England including 1 playoff match up.

The Jets are 3-7 all-time at Gillette Stadium. Overall as the road team in the series they are 18-23.

The Jets were plus 9 in turnover differential for the season.  They have given up 14 INTs and 7 fumbles, while picking off opponents 12 times and recovering 18 fumbles.

Based on points per game, the Jets offense finished ranked 14th (22.9) in the league, while the defense was 6th (19.0).

Jets Staff Notes:

Hear what New York head coach Rex Ryan had to say about the game in a conference call with the New England media.

Rex Ryan is 20-12 in his 2nd season as a head coach.  For the second season the Jets are an AFC Wild Card team. He is 3-1 in the playoffs for an overall record of 23-13.

Ryan takes a swipe at Brady.  Then says it’s about him vs. Belichick and “it’s personal”.

Ryan thinks Brady was taunting the Jets sideline in Week 13.

Jets Players Notes:

Mark Sanchez is 18-12 as a starting QB and is 3-1 in the playoffs for an overall record of 21-13.  Sanchez was the Jets 1st round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Southern California.

There is a huge amount of pressure on Sanchez.

The Jets players have been waiting a month and half for this chance.

Former Patriots OL Damien Woody is now on the IR and out for the playoffs.

Jets CB Antonio Cromartie hates Tom Brady he said ever since 2006.

New York hopes RB Shonn Green can come on strong Sunday.

Former UCONN player LB Cody Brown is on the Jets practice squad.

There are 7 other players on the roster from current or former Big East and New England based Universities. CD Darrelle Revis (Pittsburgh); LB Jamaal Westerman (Rutgers); OL Damien Woody (IR – Boston College); DE Mike Devito (Maine), OL Vladimir Ducasse (UMass); S James Ihedigbo (UMass); TE Matthew Mulligan (Maine).

Next Week

If the Patriots beat the Jets they will host the winner of the Baltimore Ravens/Pittsburgh Steelers game in the AFC Championship game at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on Sunday January 23rd at 6:30 p.m. on CBS.

  • Brewers Mgr – Ken Macha – CHECK
  • Reds Mgr – Dusty Baker – won division; got extension
  • Pirates Mgr – John Russell – CHECK
  • Padres Mgr – Bud Black – had his team in it all year; was NL Mgr of the Year
  • Athletics Mgr – Bob Geren – returning after team finished 2nd in AL West

  • Mariners Mgr – Don Wakamatsu – fired during the season
  • Marlins Mgr – Fredi Gonzalez – fired during the season
  • Diamondbacks Mgr – AJ Hinch – fired during season

Some even left under their own power:

  • Cubs Mgr – Lou Piniella – resigned towards seasons end
  • Dodgers Mgr – Joe Torre – decided not to seek a new contract
  • Braves Mgr – Bobby Cox – retired after season
  • Blue Jays Mgr – Cito Gaston – retired after season

Those four guys all won World Series as managers. There are 8 World Series titles there in all:

  • Piniella (Reds 1990)
  • Torre (Yankees 1996;1998;1999 & 2000)
  • Cox (Braves 1995)
  • Gaston (Blue Jays 1992 &1993)

That group accounted for 7 of the titles in the 90’s.  The only one’s they missed on were 1991 (Twins/Kelly); 1994 (Strike – No Series) and 1997 (Marlins/Leyland).

So in recapping the 2010 MLB season I correctly predicted:

  • 1 entire division top to bottom (NL East)
  • Winners of the NL East and NL Wild Card
  • Both Cy Young Winners (Halladay and Hernandez)
  • and the firings of 5 managers and 1 GM

For all you seem heads looking forward to the 2011 season I will be rolling out the Gigantic Sox & Dawgs 2011 MLB Preview before the season starts so make sure to look for it.

Patriots Fry Fish in Finale

Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots celebrates a touchdown by teammate BenJarvis Green-Ellis in the first quarter against the Miami Dolphins on January 2, 2011 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The New England Patriots (14-2) put a wonderful sweet cherry on top of yet another great season for the franchise on Sunday by beating down their AFC East rival the Miami Dolphins (7-9), 38-7 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.  The 14th win of the year marks the fourth time in 11 seasons under Bill Belichick that the team has had at least 14 wins.  Two of the three previous times they went to and won the Super Bowl.  The other time, we don’t speak of.

While the Patriots should be allowed to bask in the memory of their fine season, it was by far a different direction that the Dolphins went in.  In his third season, and after winning the Brady-less AFC East in 2008, CT native and Miami head coach Tony Sparano may actually be taking his talents somewhere other than South Beach in 2011.  After three seasons, the Fish are 25-23 under Sparano with one division title; a playoff loss and not a whole lot more to show.  After a promising 11-5 start he has led the team to back-to-back 7-9 seasons.  But alas, it’s not all his fault as former VP in charge of Football Operations Bill Parcells and General Manager Tim Ireland failed to find in some manner or form to find the franchise’s next quarterback.  For a team who knew how to select Hall of Famer Dan Marino, it’s shocking that they haven’t been able to find someone who could carry his towel since he retired after the 1999 season.

With that said lets take a look at how the Patriots wrapped up their season and headed into a playoff bye week as the top seed in the AFC.

In a game that meant nothing, QB Tom Brady took another step toward locking in his second MFL MVP award by throwing for 2 more TDs while not being intercepted for the 9th consecutive game.  When he left the game, his new NFL record for attempts without an INT were increased to 335. While he was in the game Brady was 10 of 16 for 199 yards with the 2 TDs and no INTs.  He also was not sacked.  Both of Brady’s TD passes went to TE’s one to rookie Rob Gronkowski who got his 10th TD catch of the year a new Patriots rookie record and one to the veteran Alge Crumpler, who afterward gave away the ball to a kid in the stands.

Also mixed in there before Brady was relieved for good in the third quarter was a 1 yard TD run by BenJarvis Green-Ellis giving him a team leading 13 TDs on the season, a 28 yard FG by Shane Graham and a Patriots team record 94 yard punt return by Julian Edelman just mere seconds before halftime.  With the aid of the Edelman return, the 9th non-offensive TD scored this season by the Patriots, the went into the locker room with a comfortable lead of 24-0.

After Brady left with a 31-0 lead in the third, second string QB Brian Hoyer came in and played well for a guy who never sees the field. He was 7 of 13 for 122 yards and threw his first NFL TD pass to rookie WR Brandon Tate who made a sensational diving catch in the end zone for the score.  Hoyer never saw it though as he got planted by a late hit and was spitting Field Turf pellets out of his mouth.

The Dolphins finally managed to get on the board with a late fourth quarter score when QB Tyler Thigpen, who replaced starter Chad Henne, threw a 21 yard TD pass to WR Devon Bess with 2:11 left to play and the game well in hand.

The Patriots did see their games with no turnovers stopped at 8 when RB Danny Woodhead fumbled the ball in the first quarter.  It was Woodhead’s first fumble of the season, the Patriots first turnover since a Hoyer pick in the Cleveland loss and just their 10th giveaway of the year. The Patriots though did get two takeaways.  Rookie CB Devin McCourty grabbed his 7th INT of the year when he stepped in front of a Henne pass on the games opening drive.  And Miami RB Ricky Williams coughed the ball up when DL Eric Moore stripped it and and LB Rob Ninkovich fell on it in the 2nd quarter.

So now the players will get Tuesday off, then return on Wednesday to get ready for their first playoff game.  The NFL announced the game will be on Sunday January 16th at 4:30 p.m. at Gillette Stadium against the lowest remaining AFC seed.  Depending on the outcomes of this weeks up coming Wild Card weekend battles the Patriots could play the (4) Chiefs, (5) Ravens or (6) Jets. They wouldn’t play Indianapolis or Pittsburgh until the AFC title game on Sunday January 23rd.

Interview With Former UConn Star Mel Thomas

Former UConn Huskies guard Mel Thomas (2004-08) has decided to pursue a career in coaching as she works towards a graduate degree in business. Thomas, 24, recently joined the staff of Karl Smesko as the Director of Basketball Operations at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in Fort Myers FL.

Mel ThomasAfter tearing her ACL in her senior season (2007-08) at UConn, Thomas missed out on the 2008 WNBA draft due to the injury. She later recovered well enough to play her first professional season in Ireland as a member of the Bausch and Lomb Waterford Wildcats of the Irish National Basketball League.

After a personally successfully season , Thomas returned home with the hope of playing in the WNBA. After being invited to training camp by the Seattle Storm last year she tore her meniscus in her knee just weeks before reporting and was unable to play once again until the fall. In October of 2009,, Thomas went off to play in Poland for Artego Bydgoszcz in the Polish league, PLKK.

This year after not being signed by a WNBA team and disappointed in her overseas experiences, Thomas has decided to try her hand at coaching and finds herself about to pursue her coaching career and her MBA (Masters of Business Administration) at FGCU starting this fall.

Recently, Sox & Dawgs asked Thomas a few questions about her new position, coaching, playing professionally and about her future. Always there will a smile and willing to answer just about anything Mel took some time from her busy schedule of studying for her GMAT’s (Graduate Management Admission Test), helping out at basketball camps and doing book signings for her book “Heart of a Husky” to answer these for us

They now run just as they were put to Mel and exactly how she answered them.

Sox & Dawgs: With your energy and drive, coaching seems like a natural progression for you but what made you decide to get into at this stage of your career?

Mel Thomas: “I love basketball more than anything, but playing overseas wasn’t the same. The basketball wasn’t as competitive and I missed the camaraderie I experienced with my high school and college teams. I knew I wanted to stay involved in the game, so coaching seemed like the best way to do it. I am really excited to get back into collegiate basketball”.

S&D: How did you hear about the Director of Operations position at FGCU? How long was the hiring process for you?

Mel: “When I returned from Poland, I didn’t know if I wanted to go overseas again. For about two months, I applied for GA (graduate assistant) positions, coaching jobs, and internships in order to see what opportunities were available to me. I went on a visit to FGCU, and they offered me the position. It was a difficult decision because I wasn’t sure that I would rather coach than play, but now I feel that I made the right choice”.

S&D: We know basketball staffs have the Director of Operations position but exactly what are you responsible for before, during and after games and practices?

Mel: As a Director of Basketball Operations, I will be responsible for making travel arrangements (hotels, flights), determining practice times, scheduling games, breaking down practice and game film, etc.

S&D: How long a commitment do you have to FGCU and will it prevent you from playing if you chose to do so?

Mel: “I will be at FGCU for a minimum of 2 years because I will be pursuing an MBA, in addition to the Director of Basketball Operations position. I will have the summers off, so it would be possible to play somewhere during the summer if I wanted to”.

S&D: I think many UConn fans expected to see you play in the WNBA but a couple of injuries set you back the last few seasons. Did you have any opportunities to play in the league this year? If not, were you surprised you didn’t get an opportunity?

Mel: “I was injured my senior year of college, so I didn’t have much of a chance to get drafted. The following year, I was invited to training camp with the Seattle Storm, but I tore my meniscus three weeks before I was supposed to report to camp. This year, I went to a free agent camp at the Final Four in San Antonio. My agent told me there weren’t many available spots in team training camps, so I was hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I didn’t get picked up, but I played really well and did everything I could so I left with my head held high. I clearly haven’t had the best luck, but I’m sure there is something great out there for me”

S&D: You played two seasons overseas, one in Ireland and one in Poland, what were those experiences like on and off the court?

Mel: “The basketball in Europe was very different than here in the States. The basketball wasn’t as competitive and no one took it as seriously, which was very hard for me to deal with. I usually only saw my teammates at practice. Most of them were busy with school, families, or other careers. I was lonely much of the time. On the other hand, I was getting paid to do what I love. I was able to experience other cultures and see the world, and I made lifelong friends.

I also attempted to learn other languages, which was fun. I am so grateful for the opportunity to play overseas and it was a great experience, but it’s not something I see myself doing for the next 10 years”.

S&D: Where do you see yourself professionally in the next 5 or 10 years?

Mel: “I would love to be involved in sports in some aspect. I am interested in coaching, training kids, sports marketing, communications, sports broadcasting, and event planning. I recently met a woman named Glennis Orloff who invented compression shorts that help improve posture and prevent ACL injuries. I am looking to get involved with her company as well (www.aspaeris.com)”.

Thanks everyone for your support!

Thomas, a native of Cincinnati Ohio, was a three year starter and two year team co-captain with Renee Montgomery. She ranks 31st on Uconn’s All-time scoring list with 1,098 points and is in the Top 5 of 3 point field goals made with 224. She was a 2008 CoSIDAWomen’s Basketball Academic All-District I First Team member, 2006 Big East Most Improved Player and Miss Basketball Ohio in her senior year (2004) at Mount Notre Dame High School. She brings a wealth of knowledge, skill and personal drive to her new job and we know the staff and players at FGCU are going to love her as much as her UConn fans do.
