Former UConn Huskies center Hasheem Thabeet left school early for a chance to pursue the millions that a top lottery pick in the NBA gets.
The Memphis Grizzlies took him with the second overall pick in last year’s draft but he hasn’t seen much time on the court this season. He’s averaged 10.3 minutes a game in 50 games with averages of 2.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks.
The good news is Thabeet will get a chance to play a little more. The bad news is that he’s been demoted to the Dakota Wizards of the D-League.
Thabeet is now the highest drafted player to play in the D-League surplanting Martell Webster who was drafted 6th in 2006.
It was definitely the right move at the time for Thabeet to go pro. But I’ll bet given the circumstances if he had to do it all over again, he’d have stayed at UConn.
The other good news is that the winter in Bismarck, North Dakota shouldn’t be a problem for Thabeet seeing how he spent three years in Storrs, CT.
