Pittsburgh Pirates' Freddy Sanchez breaks his bat as he fouls off a pitch during the first inning of a baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, in Milwaukee. (AP Photo/Morry Gash)As Joel Sherman of the New York Post pointed out earlier in the afternoon, the Pittsburgh Pirates were active again as they have sent Freddy Sanchez to the San Francisco Giants. In return, the Giants have sent their #4 prospect Tim Alderson who was playing for the Connecticut Defenders of the Eastern League.

In 13 games with the Defenders, Alderson was 6-1 with a 3.47 ERA.

Sanchez currently has an inflamed knee and proabably won’t be in the lineup until Monday for the Giants. This is third organization for Sanchez as he started out with the Boston Red Sox.

Since it appears that this was a straight-up deal, this is a major coup for the Pirates as they dump salary and get a quality prospect in return.
