My sincere apologies for being late with this today but it’s been a crazy morning and sometimes real life gets in the way.
Clay Buchholz pitched a gem for the Boston Red Sox last night but it wasn’t enough as Texas Rangers starter C.J. Wilson was equal to the task in the Rangers 3-0 win. Despite the loss last night, the Red Sox took the series 2-1 and have the lowly Baltimore Orioles coming into town for a 3-game set this weekend.
Buchholz was probably pitching for his spot in the rotation last night and it showed. He was sharp throughout the first six innings but as he got into the 7th inning, he began to tire and that’s when the problems began for the Red Sox. The Rangers were able to take advantage of that and with a couple of errors by the Red Sox, including one by Buchholz himself, the Rangers plated three runs in the 7th.
It was learned by Sean McAdam of CSN New England that Buchholz won’t lose his rotation spot and Tim Wakefield will be heading to the bullpen after his start on Sunday to make room for Daisuke Matsuzaka in the rotation. What’s not known yet is when Dice-K will make his first start and who he’ll replace on the roster. If I were a betting man, I’d put my money on the two Scott’s, Atchison and Schoeneweis.
I’m sort of surprised by this given the fact Clay still has one more minor league option left. The Red Sox braintrust must have felt that Clay going back to Triple-A probably wouldn’t help his development. I do wonder though if the move has anything to do with the nine stolen base attempts off of the combination of Wake and Victor Martinez the other night.
Wilson did a great job of keeping the Red Sox hitters at bay last night mixing his pitches nicely. The Red Sox could never really get anything going against him.
It was nice though to see the Red Sox wake up against the Rangers at least even though they sit at 6-10. With the Orioles in town and them not playing good ball right now, let’s hope the Red Sox can get a sweep of them and move closer to .500.
One more note, tonight’s Red Sox game will be broadcast on NESN Plus in the Red Sox television market. To see where NESN Plus is located on your cable system, click here.
