According to reviews from Friday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans Kevin Faulk was Kevin Faulk. Gino Cappelletti and Gil Santos on the Patriots Rock Radio Network raved about him and he was very effective on screens and draws.
Rodney Harrison seems to be playing like the old Harrison and that is nothing but good news for the Patriots. He was all over the place reeking havoc with the Titans offense and had a huge hit on Vince Young.
Tom Brady and his receiving corps still look a little out of sorts but knowing the perfectionist Brady is, that will all be worked out before Week 1. Right now I’d love to see him and Matt Cassel cut down on the picks as each was intercepted twice. There were also some protection issues and the QBs were steadily rushed, hurried, hit and sacked.
If you’ve never really experienced Bill Belichick here is the transcript of his post game press conference after the Tennessee game. He is a master at saying nothing or admitting nothing. We know his dad spent time as a coach at Navy but from the way he interacts with the media you’d have thought that Bill was trained to be a prisoner of war.
Titans head coach Jeff Fischer said the rain and the constant on-going rush made things difficult for Young on Friday night. The Patriots sacked the second year quarterback four times and he went six attempts in-a-row without a completion at one point. Young was also stopped twice at the Patriots 1 yard line when he attempted to run.
“I think it was the weather, the surface, people in his face. The approach the Patriots took defensively, which was a unique approach,” Fisher said Saturday.
“They brought people almost every down from different places. They dropped different people out in coverage. We went in this game with a very basic game plan and did not put ourselves in position to try to take advantage of those things.”
We are still yet to see WR Randy Moss and RB Lawrence Maroney play a preseason down. Moss is still battling the hamstring issue and Maroney is still recovering from off season shoulder surgery. I expect both to be ready to go Week 1 at the Jets.
Punter Danny Baugher has been making an impression throughout camp and it led to veteran punter Josh Miller being cut. In last weeks game against Tennessee Baugher hit a 70-yard punt that most likely got him on the team.
In the secondary Randall Gay has been turning heads. After suffering two consecutive season ending injuries and the death of long-time friend Marquis Hill, Gay has been very productive in preseason. He and Hill were roommates in New England in 2004 and teammates at LSU since 2001 they were very close and you can expect Marquis’ memory will be an inspiration for Gay this season.
The Patriots released safety Artrell Hawkins on Saturday. The nine year vet played 19 games in the last two seasons for the Pats. He has also played for Cincinnati and Carolina in addition to his time in Foxboro.
On Saturday the team also announced that veteran quarterback Vinnie Testaverde had signed a one year contract for $800,000. Testaverde, the top pick in the 1987 NFL Draft, returns for his 21st NFL season. With Testaverde’s signing undrafted free agent Matt Gutierrez appears to be the odd man out.
In addition to the Patriots, Testaverde has played for Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Baltimore, New York Jets and Dallas. Last season Testaverde set a NFL record for having thrown at least one TD pass in 20 consecutive seasons when he threw one against Tennessee in the seasons final game.
His best season was with the Baltimore Ravens in their 1996 inaugural season, when he threw for 4,177 yards and had 33 touchdown passes.
Testaverde is No. 6 in NFL history in completions, attempts and passing yards and ranks ninth in touchdown passes.
From other NFL Camps:
From San Diego, which we all know is german for “whale’s vagina”, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was really upset with the Patriots last year after they knocked Dorothy Mantooth out of the playoffs. If you remember one of the Patriots mimicked Merriman’s “light’s out” dance on the Chargers logo at midfield after the game. Well Merriman announced last week that he is putting the “lights out” dance away for now. He say he “wasn’t told by anyone to dial it down” and that he decided to do this on his own. Yea, right. I wonder if he realized how assinine he looked doing it after every play he made. It’s great to get jacked up when you make a big stop but when you make an everyday play get your ass back to the huddle and keep your mouth shut and save the dancing for Emmit Smith.
In Cleveland, former Notre Dame quarterback and a favorite Deadspin target, Brady Quinn made his preseason debut in the 4th quarter. He clearly outplayed the other two QBs on the Browns roster but head coach Romeo Crennel isn’t ready to proclaim him the number one quarterback. Even though he played against the Lions lesser lights, he was playing with what equates to the Browns third team and he went 13 for 20 for 155 yards and 2 TDs. That was all in the final 9:20 of the game.
“I think you’ve got to give the young man credit,” Crennel said. “Their best guys weren’t in there but our best guys weren’t in there either. I’ll look at the tape and we’ll decide. He’s still a young quarterback and he had a limited offense and I believe in time that he’s going to be a good quarterback.
“But the reason he didn’t play more tonight was that he wasn’t ready. I’ve said all along we’ll see what the kid can do and when he gets a better grasp of the offense we’ll ask him to do more.”
Tim Couch, the first player selected in the 1999 NFL Draft, had his comeback attempt with the Jacksonville Jaguars derailed over the weekend when they released him just one month after he signed a two year contract. The former University of Kentucky QB was the top pick by Cleveland and played five years for the Browns. He was in training camp with Green Bay in 2004 but shoulder injuries forced him from the game. He hasn’t played a regular season game in 3 years and now it looks as if he is done in the NFL.
The Broncos have lost defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban for the season with a torn achilles tendon when he was hurt in the game against Dallas on Saturday. The 9-year veteran, a former first round draft pick by Dallas, is in his 3rd year with Denver. He also played one year with Cleveland.
