UConn Beat a Top-10 Team on the Road This Preseason. Beating Purdue Tonight Makes It a Trend.

Purdue is walking into Hartford for a rematch nobody scheduled by accident.

Tonight’s UConn-Purdue exhibition at People’s Bank Arena, tipping off at 7 p.m. ET, is the 2024 National Championship Game all over again, the one UConn won 75-60 in Phoenix. Same two programs, different building, same bragging rights on the line.

UConn’s resume heading in: a 72-52 win over Syracuse to open the preseason, then a trip on the road to take down No. 6 Michigan State, 78-70.

Hurley’s own reaction tells you something.

That’s about as much respect as a head coach gives a preseason win in October.

This is the same UConn program that’s spent the fall getting talked about like it’s still hunting for its post-championship identity. Two exhibitions in, the Huskies have already beaten a power-conference opponent and a top-10 Big Ten roster on the road. That’s not a team hunting for anything. Exhibitions get waved off as meaningless all the time, and most of them are. Beating a ranked team away from home in October is not most exhibitions.

Purdue’s not a layup either. The Boilermakers have blown out both of their own tune-ups this fall, and Matt Painter’s teams tend to find their form by March no matter how October looked. That’s the difference between tonight and a glorified scrimmage.

Beat Purdue tonight and UConn’s gone through a solid Syracuse team, No. 6 Michigan State and the 2024 runner-up, in that order, before Big East play has run a single possession. At that point the “rebuilding its identity” talk around Storrs doesn’t deserve to survive the week.

Exhibition or not.
