What’s up with Vince Young? He says he is committed to football but based on reports coming out of Nashville you’d think he just plain ol’ needs to be committed.
It all seemingly started Sunday during the Titans season opener when he was resoundingly booed after a pick. He actually refused to go back into the game until head coach Jeff Fischer pleaded with him to return.
Once he returned he ended up getting injured spraining his MCL and he will miss between 2 and 4 four weeks of action. But the curious part in all this started later on.
Then on Monday night concern for his mental state led the Titans to notify Nashville police and report Young missing when he abruptly left his house, speeding away from his agent on the interstate at speeds approaching 100 mph to evade him. Friends and family said Young was upset and left the house with a gun.
Young reportedly was at a friends house eating chicken wings and watching the Monday Night Football games. He didn’t say what he thought of Tony Kornheiser or the three Mike’s but I’m always interested in the opinion of a crazy man so needless to say I’m disappointed that was omitted from any reports. I am also disappointed no one told us whether the wings were breaded or naked and how hot he likes them and if he uses bleu cheese or not.
This episode prompted VY’s momma to speak to reporters. And in the name of Allen Iverson and Donovan McNabb’s momma’s this is never, ever a good thing. Momma Felicia Young said her son was “hurting inside and out.” My guess is he ate too many wings and the sauce was too hot, that usually wrecks me for a good day. I feel your pain VY but dab, don’t rub and the burning goes away shortly.
But momma Young continued to flap her gums and told the Tennessean that “he will be fine if people are prayerful and help my baby boy out. He is a young man. He just needs a lot of love and support.”
Personally I see every opposing lineman in the league willing to help Vince out. I’m sure they will offer him plenty words of encouragement from across the line of scrimmage and tell him how much they love his momma. That should have a calming effect on Vince much like it always did for Tony Eason.
Young’s agent has down played any depression or Young’s fragile emotional state saying it’s all been blown out of proportion. But then Friday comes the report that Young talked to his therapist, Sheila Peters, a clinical psychologist and reportedly had thoughts of suicide. She even went as far as reportedly setting up an evaluation for Young at a Nashville psychiatric hospital.
Norm Chow who was Young’s offensive coordinator at Tennessee last season said Young “takes things too personally” and “lets his emotions get to him”. But he added he hopes this is all blown out of proportion. We as football fans do too but you are really left to wonder if Young has the mental make up it takes to be able to play this game.
And now Miami Dolphins running back and fellow Texas alum Ricky Williams is empathizing with Young. My prediction is pretty soon you’ll see Ricky and Vince driving around the country in a beat up old van with smoke pouring out like Cheech and Chong playing pass the bong and trying not to spill the water.
