Hermida’s 3-Run Double Lifts Sox To Win

Boston Red Sox left fielder Jeremy Hermida, right, is congratulated by Adrian Beltre after the Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-3 in a baseball game Wednesday, April 14, 2010 in Minneapolis.(AP Photo/Andy King)

Jeremy Hermida came over to the Boston Red Sox with no idea how much playing time he’d receive during the 2010 season. But with Jacoby Ellsbury on the shelf with bruised ribs, Hermida has been making the most of his time.

Hermida’s 3-run double in the 8th inning was the difference as the Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 6-3 in front of 38,164 at Target Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Sox defeated the Twins 6-3.(AP Photo/Andy King)The Red Sox get back to .500 (4-4) with the win while the Twins fall to 6-3.

John Lackey started this one for the Red Sox and didn’t have the best of outings but he was still good enough to pick up his first win in a Red Sox uniform. He struggled with his curveball as he uncharateristically walked four batters. He allowed two runs on seven hits and those four walks with two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Hideki Okajima walked one in an a 1/3 of an inning while Daniel Bard struggled in his inning. He gave up a run on two hits. Despite walking two, Jonathan Papelbon picked up his third save of the season.

The top three in the Red Sox line up all had two hits as Marco Scutaro, Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez had two hits. Pedroia had two RBIs, one on a double and one on his team-leading fourth home run of the season. Scutaro also added an RBI.

David Ortiz continues to struggle as he struck again two more times but did manage a double.

The Red Sox got out of the gates quickly in the 1st as Scutaro led off with a single and came home on Pedroia’s double which was misplayed by left fielder Delmon Young. Scutaro’s RBI single in the 2nd gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

The Twins tied it up in the 3rd on back-to-back hits by Orlando Hudson and Joe Mauer but Pedroia’s home run in the 5th gave the Red Sox the lead back.

Hermida’s bases clearing double in the 8th pushed the Red Sox lead to 6-2. Bard would allow a solo home run to Michael Cuddyer in the 8th but that would end the scoring for the afternoon at new Target Field.

The Red Sox will look to take the series on Thursday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. when Tim Wakefield and Francisco Liriano square off on the bump.

Late Morning Red Sox Delight – 4/14

John Lackey (L), Kevin Slowey (R) - AP Photos

After enjoying a day off on Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins resume their three-game set at Target Field today.

This afternoon’s game will start at 1:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. The game can be seen in the Twins television market on FOX Sports North. And if you don’t live in either market, today’s game will be broadcast on the MLB Network. If you can’t catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

John Lackey makes his second start of the 2010 season for the Red Sox. In his first start against the Yankees, Lackey allowed three hits in six scoreless innings. As a member of the Angels, he made one start in 2009 against the Twins, picking up the win after allowing two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings. He’s faced 14 times in his career and is 6-5 with a 3.75 ERA. In six career starts at the Metrodome, he was 3-2 with a 4.30 ERA.

Kevin Slowey makes his second start of the season for Ron Gardenhire and the Twins. He picked up the win against the Angels on 4/8 after allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings. He made one start against the Red Sox in 2009, getting a win after allowing two runs in six innings. He’s made two career starts against the Red Sox and is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes – 4/13

Target Field during the National Anthem during the Minnesota Twins home opener against the Boston Red Sox on April 12, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota - Getty Images

The Boston Red Sox were hoping to spoil the Minnesota Twins opening of Target Field on Monday afternoon but instead found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard after Jon Lester struggled.

During early season starts before yesterday, Lester has struggled in his shorts career. He carried a 2-4 record with a 4.94 ERA in March/April starts and yesterday was no better. He allowed four runs on nine hits and three walks but did have five strikeouts.

His main problem though was his command. He was all over the place with his pitches as he was only able to throw 59 of his 107 pitches for strikes. He often found himself pitching from behind and the Twins took advantage of that.

The struggles of David Ortiz continued as he struck out twice although he did have a double and drove in a run. The double he hit should have been caught by Delmon Young as it popped out of his glove after he got turned around trying to catch.

Ortiz is missing pitches that he used to crush out of the ballpark and he’s striking out looking more than he ever has in his career. He made it clear yesterday that his wrist is not bothering him but it makes you wonder if it really is bothering him.

How long Terry Francona decides to stick with Big Papi remains to be seen but with Jeremy Hermida off to a nice start and Mike Lowell on the bench., it could only be a matter of time. We know there’s loyalty there with Big Papi but Tito needs to do something before Big Papi ends up hurting the team, especially with him batting fifth in the lineup.

The Red Sox and Twins are off today and will return back to action on Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. when John Lackey and Kevin Slowey will square off.

Keep reading for today’s links from the local Boston media.
